Fractured my scaphoid (non-displaced waist) 4 weeks in plaster and 5 weeks in a removable brace. Thank God it healed. The scariest part is not knowing if it'll heal or not. Good luck and fast recovery to anyone that's here because they broke theirs.

I did everything I could to heal myself faster and I got cleared to play at exactly 5 weeks from the break. I hope this creates a sense of hope for some of you dealing with this process. I broke my scaphoid in a basketball game after getting fouled and falling on it, I thought I had sprained my wrist but I broke my hand when I went to the orthopedic he gave me pretty bad news that I would miss basketball for 10 weeks (6 weeks in a cast 4 weeks in a splint) tomorrow I get my cast off and he will let me take it off for shooting and dribbling drills. I am a freshman and my team has around 8 players for varsity so this year hurts to miss. But it could be worse at least I am not a senior or older but I still have hope of returning before my splint comes off. Thank you!!

I’m 10 weeks into the recovery process for a schaphoid fracture after a bike accident - I was in a cast for 10 weeks and have “graduated” to a splint for 2 more weeks. Latest X-ray looked good so I’m almost done, but that stupid little bone is a real pain in the butt to deal with. I did a lot of walking in the early stages of my recovery, which maintained my sanity & got the blood flowing & also started stationary bike a week or so ago. Hang in there - it will get better eventually but you need to be patient!

Thanks for the clear explanation. I fell off my bike In early November, went to a clinic the same day, but x-rays showed no damage so the doctor told me not to worry, to rest and apply a compress, and I would be fine. I wasn’t happy with this diagnosis, so after a few repeat visits, went to another clinic. Here, the doctor took X-rays on my hand and top of tibia, along with ultrasound. He thought there may be fractures to both, sonlso ordered an MRI, which happened a few days later. This confirmed the fractures to both the top of the tibia and the scaphoid. I had my hand/arm cast straight away, and a temporary leg cast fitted. I returned to the clinic a few times for continuous x-rays, and just before Christmas was told that the leg was healed sufficiently that I no longer need the leg cast, and could start walking again. However the hand was still not quite ready. Today, early January, I returned to the clinic and had the hand/arm cast removed, and some more X-rays. The tibia and scaphoid are gradually healing, allowing me to return to normal activity, however the doctor recommends I wait a few more weeks/months before getting back into exercising properly. So I will continue to do gentle walking and stretching. I’m really grateful for the expert knowledge of the second doctor, as I could so easily have followed the first doctor’s advice and done nothing, potentially resulting in a slower recovery, or bones that did not heal.

I fractured my scaphoid during a high school football game. Didn’t hurt much at all at first so I played through the rest of the season and did track during the winter. My wrist hurt sometimes during that period but I was generally able to bear it and could get through most of my normal activities. However, I noticed that it progressively got weaker over time. Ultimately I decided to get it checked out after I could no longer support my own weight or lift in the weight room. Turns out that I needed a major bone graph, screw, and plate in order to get it to try and heal since it had been fractured for over 4 months. They took bone from my forearm instead of my pelvis because I was so young. I got the surgery and had to miss my entire lacrosse season that year due to recovery being over 12 weeks. Thank god it healed and I was able to go back to playing sports the following year.

I've had this surgery now, I'll tell you my story and try to answer any questions. I broke my scaphoid after getting knocked off my bicycle. At the ER they took XRays put me in a thumb spica cast and told me to come back in a few weeks. I went to see a private hand specialist who had me do CT scans. The specialist told me I had a crushed fracture and recommended surgery. Due to scheduling conflicts I had the surgery 1 month after the accident. During the surgery they put a screw in and recast my wrist. After 6 weeks I got my cast off. Total cast time was 10 weeks. My wrist had practically zero movement afterwards. I began physical therapy immediately. Now I'm two weeks into the torture.. I mean therapy. Progress is slow but notable. I will try to update in the future.

Broke (crushed, were the surgeon's words) my scaphoid about 3.5 months ago now after a mountain bike crash, had surgery on it a month to the day after breaking it after seeing a couple different surgeons. Mine required 6 pins, 2 small plates and a bone graft from my radius. I spent 4 weeks in a soft splint and then 8 weeks in a hard cast. I'm about a week and a half out from having my cast removed and mobility is generally slow to return. My thumb mobility returned to about 90% within the first week, but I only have about 30 degrees of flexion in either direction from my wrist. My surgeon didn't recommend PT for active folks my age(I'm 30), but I've been stretching and exercising it as it allows.
I'm happy to answer questions if anyone has any about the process. Hope everyone has success with their injuries!

I broke it on the handlebars of my dirtbike by smacking into a big hole I didn’t see going up a hill fairly quickly. Instantly knew it was broken and I didn’t hurt myself in any other way after falling down. Luckily I had a brace at home from breaking my thumb once, so after icing it I put that on and then went to get x rays done a couple days later. Sure enough it’s cracked down the middle. Still have a week before the check up scan, hopefully I won’t need surgery but I’ll see. I keep the immobilizing brace on full time now after taking it off to shower the first week (never bending my wrist obviously). @@mysteretsym Yeah, mine healed up pretty well in 2-3 months. I started getting active in the gym again about a month and a half / 2 months after the break but doing exercises that didn’t strain the bone too much. Pull ups etc, avoiding pressing exercises completely since they directly load the wrist more than hanging from a bar. Now 3 and a half months out it’s great, I do push ups with a closed fist now since it hurts to bend that far back on the wrist but other than that I have basically no issues anymore and I’m back to training MMA and riding bikes etc like normal. My fracture started at the top then split down the middle and came out near the middle on the other side, so it wasn’t in the danger zone fortunately. Anyway it healed pretty quick and well all things considered, I’m 25 and pretty active though so take that into consideration too. I’d say, wait for it to heal and get a scan to prove it’s healing well before you try to get active step my step again, but I wouldn’t wait longer than necessary either, just keep an eye on pain levels and feel it out without taking too much risk. Broke my left scaphoid, ironically on April fools Day 2018. Went to hospital next day, X ray and cast. Nurse told me it was a bad break, cos they could see the gap. Went to the fracture clinic the next week. Consultant decided to cast it for about 10 weeks. Every 2 weeks I'd go back for X ray. Was told every time, that it was healing. My last appointment, in late July, they told me, oh sorry not healing. We will book u in for a CT scan. The CT scan was February 2019. In the meantime I was back in my manual job from August 2018. Which tbh wasn't fun. Had CT scan, confirmed it was a bad break. Had the op then in June 2019. Grafted bone off my hip. Now it's a lot better. Not 100%, bout 90%. So can't complain. Fractured my scaphoid bone around 3 months ago while bmxing. I have gone from a cast to a splint and after recent cat scans it’s been revealed to me that I’m going to need surgery which includes them screwing the bone together and casting it back up. I’ve been reading horror story after horror story and am concerned I’ll never be able to ride or do push-ups again. If anyone has any advice or motivation they can share from their own personal experience I would greatly appreciate it. I’m scared out of my mind right now and can’t stop freaking out please help.

Hey. Sorry to hear the news. I Fractured my scaphoid a year ago today in football and just like the surgeon said in the video I played my whole season on it. I got surgery on it 5 months ago and got a screw put in to bring the bones back together. Currently after 5 months of the surgery I can’t do push ups nor can I lift more then 20 LBS. it’s a hard journey to go through but I’m dedicated to get better. Good luck and don’t be scared.

Fell off the balance beam at gymnastics practice in 2012 and caught myself with my left hand. Clean x-ray the next day so I continued gymnastics and cheerleading and didn’t find out until 2013 that I had a complete fracture of my scaphoid bone. Broke my distal radius and the surgeon installed a volar locking plate and screws. At my 6 week post op, the PA asked if I had reinjured myself and what I did for work. I told him no, and that I was just a student right now. He responds, "I'm sorry but you're going to need another surgery." They missed a scaphoid fracture so I'm being sent back to step 1 of recovery. It's an upsetting set of circumstances to say the least. From my research it seems that these two fractures very rarely happen simultaneously, so I assume they didn't think to look for it. Paired with the fact that it was really hard to see the fracture at first, it makes sense that it was missed. But still, I was upset to hear that they were going to have to cut me open again. And for anyone who is curious, I broke my wrist in a skateboarding accident. My friend and I decided to bomb a massive hill on our boards. Near the end I hit a rock and flew off the board, resulting in a concussion and a broken wrist. Fun times.

At first when I got it looked at they said it was a slight fracture. I was in an elbow cast for 3 weeks. When I went back in to get a X-ray it got worse and separated. Had surgery the next day. After the surgery they gave me a cast for a month. I would go in every month and it just wouldn’t heal fast at all. I fully recovered in 8 months! I had 8 different casts. It was a terrible process

Just had my surgery one week ago. May 2014 I fell from altitude on my wrist. I thought it was no big deal as well and I continued doing my stuff. After few months I noticed it isn't healing and the motion became limited with some pain. Especially problems with push-ups and handstand and I couldn't straighten my right arm as the left one anymore. Due to travels and work I didn't do surgery until now. After more than 5 years artrosis has developed and fortunately there is still blood going through my scaphoid bone. Now they scooped some bone from my underarm and put it in the fracture and fixed with a screw. Doctor says no rugby for me for 6 months :'(. So guys, don't be like me and treat it ASAP.

I fell backwards onto my tailbone and had stuck my hand out backwards to help break the fall. My wrist hurt right away and later that night I went to the hospital, but there was a 20+ hour wait so I went back home and assumed I just had a muscle strain or something. The pain was medium for a week until one night, over a week later, my wrist was in severe pain. Like 9/10, could not move it, pain shooting up my arm, etc. I went back to the hospital, got my wrist x-rayed and turns out I fractured my scaphoid and another bone nearby. Apparently a piece broke off. That was 2 weeks ago now. During the first week I was lifting and delivering heavy boxes every day. I'm sure that didn't help lol. I'm hoping my wrist heals quickly.

  • @cubdukat

How often do these things go to surgery? I started having problems about two weeks ago, and about a week or so ago, I went to have x-rays done, and they didn't show anything to suggest a fracture, but rather a possible cyst. The next day, however, I tripped in my home and ended up breaking my fall with the offending hand. Since then, the pain has gotten worse, and it's quitee painful to use my left hand for most things. If this is a scaphoid fracture, I really want to avoid surgery since I'm really not a fan of it, and I'm still digging myself out of the financial hole that was my rotator cuff surgery three years ago to the date (give or take a couple days).

@@leefmilano9091 Sorry to hear that. Inn my case it's also my dominant hand... Anyway you need to do a X ray or smth else. In my case it was X ray , than CT scan and MRI as well. I got cast on the 10 day, after all these quests with MRI, etc. My doctor said that it's good that we found it earlier. Currently it's week 6 and 2 days. I've made new X ray 3 days ago, just to check how is healing going on and the person who done this, said that everything looks good, but it can be wrong view on X ray so probably I need do the MRI again. (Since first time my fracture was only on MRI. CT and X ray haven't any evidence ) Same time my doctor said do not do anything and keep be in the cast for 6 weeks more. But my hand still hurts. So that's it. I had painkillers pills for first 5 days and that all. IDK is it good or bad. Definitely would say that has so many time only one working hand it's hard, especially for work.

Then when I got home I started to bend my wrist small movements were fine but when I try to bend the wrist as much as I can with my other hand it hurts a lot it supposed to do that? In short: is it bad if it hurts when I bend my wrist when my doctor said it was healed.

How frequent is this injury in a 5 year old that fell from the monkey bars that landed belly down with most weight being caught by palm down hand/wrist. At the time of the fall she was in terrible pain and cried for about 20 minutes, screaming when the hand was moved. She was unable to lift her hand without it uncontrollably shaking and felt clammy and faint. (She did not hit her head) After icing and ibuprofen kicked in she was able to move her wrist but it hurt to do so. Now 2 days later and her wrist still hurts, but is bearable unless she accidentally puts any weight or pressure on it and she cannot pick anything with any weight to it up with that hand (like an ipad). My daughter refuses to get it xrayd because other than some slight bruising and swelling it looks normal and she doesn't want to have to pay the coinsurance. I do not have the legal authority as her grandmother to take her in, but having raised 4 children I do not think her symptoms should be ignored. Last night she woke up after having fallen asleep on that arm and cried because it hurt so bad. I consoled her, gave her more ibuprofen and got her to settle back down. She is needing ibuprofen on a pretty regular basis. Small kids don't start complaining about their pain so much, but their behavior changes and they become irritable when their pain gets worse. You can tell when this is happening after the time the ibuprofen is beginning to wear off. I'm not really sure what to do in this matter. I may just take her to the ER myself to get her looked at and hope they see her. Frustrated!!!! P.S. my daughter and her two children live with me. I have been the one caring for my granddaughter since her fall, her mother cared for her initially, she was the one with her at the park when she fell.

I recently fractured my scaphoid roughly 3 weeks ago and am in a cast. I would highly recommend influencing the guardian to have an X-Ray and be safe, my personal fracture had little to no swelling and no bruising after about 9 and a half hours since the injury. The scaphoid is very important and could result in serious complications in the future, also ibuprofen is not recommended to be given during fractures or breaks considering it reduces swelling and that is quite bad considering in the first few weeks the swelling is needed to help heal. I know this is late but if the problem has not been resolved take my advice into consideration.

I
can’t do pushups, lift my self off the ground (I have to use my left hand but lately that wrist has been hurting too and I don’t know why), I can’t even high five. So I can pretty much kiss basketball good bye. I’m only 15 so I got many years of misery left to live.

I read somewhere that it might be the muscles and stuff around your wrist that’s torn or injured and not the bone, so makes sense the doctors see nothing bc X-rays don’t show muscles (basically not just the bone was fractured, other things around the area were injured, too). I fell off my bike landed on my hand to catch myself went to the hospital 2 days later and they casted it for 3 weeks thinking it was a growth plate fracture then after the 3 weeks I went back they took it off I did an X-ray and they said it was a scaphoid fracture I got a little upset and moved my hand a little rough They said it was healing correctly and in position they casted me again for another 3 weeks now it’s hurts the odd time and feels sore also feels hot hopefully I don’t need surgery. Is it normal to hurt a bit in the cast and feel sore ? Thanks

No one on the web has laid out the full recovery, and everyone talks about retrograde circulation and casting and surgery and most of the stories are when they don't heal.
Give me something that lays out happy path, what PT looks like, docs clearly have a happy path laid out....but nothing about how long for full function.
If I believe you and every other doctor and story, the prognosisfor these are always poor.
I learned more from NIH study analysis than my doctor, you and every other OD has put out there.
Gives us some hope, because at this point, if I hit my fingers after 8 weeks of immobilization and have blinding excruciating pain, it doesn't look goof at all for full function. In fact it looks like the immobilization has done more damage than the bone has...and there is little pain from that at all.

There's no going back to 100% breaking your scaphoid. After 18 years of putting up with it I'm half tempted to see if i can get a cadaver bone or a synthetic bone replacement. Such a bs bone.

    • @kdc3440
      @kdc3440 2 года назад

@@user-dd1bb4tw4r as it turns out, mine has healed without complication. Some function has come back but still have lots of stiffness and ROM isn't back fully yet. My middle finger is almost back to full range of motion with another 10 degrees in the middle joint needed, but the joint under the fingernail is slow to recover....and isn't making huge gains compared to other areDr. My break was 4/30, I was cleared for gentle PT 7/22 and then cleared for normal activities 9/12. I started PT 7/29 and it's October.
If your scaphoid is bad, they can do a bone graft and there are artificial replacements. So you could talk to your dr. They likely won't do anything if you don't have pain, poor function, and/or signs of necrosis.

It will take twice as long to heal without the surgery. Surgery is the best bet if you broke it completely.

Just had a bone graft from radius to scaphoid, been broken for 5 years. What is your opinion on how long a person should be casted?

Hey Andrew. I had a screw placed in my scaphoid almost 7 months ago and I am still seeing a smaller fracture remaining. My surgeon is currently suggesting to have another operation to bone graft from radius to scaphoid as well. I'm curious how your procedure is healing. How is it looking for you currently?
