this is so awesome...i went to my doctors twice..and all he queried was a sprain..thus he didn't think to suggest an xray..6 weeks later i went back because i was still in pain and got an xray to find that my scaphoid is fractured..because its been so long before it was properly diagnosed i might have to have mine surgically fixed instead of relying on a cast/plaster..i wish i saw this video first!!answered all my questions!!!

@@nadranoreen8466, the cast goes on straight away for six weeks. But depends on the injury if it needs surgery.

I broke my scaphoid when I was 15. I told my parents to take me to the doctor, but the didn’t believe me because they thought that it was just a sprain. A year later they took me and we found out that I had a proximal pole scaphoid fracture. I ended up having surgery almost 2 years after my fracture. Now it has been 4 years since my fracture and 2 years since my surgery and I could do my day to day things without any problem, but I feel a lot of pain when I put my hand in forceful positions.Should I get my hand checked out again or is this something that I might have for the rest of my life.

I broke my scaphoid 1 year ago this week. At first I thought it was nothing, but after 12 weeks in a cast it still wasn’t healed! Due to long waiting lists with the pandemic, I only managed to get surgery 2 weeks ago. Now have a few wires sticking out of my wrist, getting those out in 4 weeks but the doc said it went well! Here’s hoping I get some mobility back after this is all over!

I got surgery a month and a half ago, I got a cast for one month. The procedure was an open wrist internal fixation radial autograft. When they took my cast off they put me in a splint that I have to have for one more month before my next appointment. Neither the cast nor the splint locked my thumb. Question; does that affect my healing?

Excuse my questioning beforehand, I just recently had an accident while overseas and suffered an incomplete, nondisplaced, waste scaphoid fracture. I'm greatly concerned as I was not seen by a specialist (orthopedic) and the doctor seem to not place much attention to the angle between my thumb and index fingers. Is there an angle of extension (or hyperextension perhaps) which would maximize vascularization? - Jose

Broke my scaphoid four weeks ago in a motorcycle crash, i've just finished my trade as a plumber and my surgeon says i will be in so much pain from arthritis i will need a bone fusion in 5 to ten years, i think i discolated 5 of the other bones in my wrist. Some wires and screws were put in, is it worth seeing another surgeon? (i live in Australia and had no choice of specialsit as it was an emergenct) as my job is my lively hood.

@dartmouthhitchcock First of all, the video is great! I had this procedure done 9 days ago on my right wrist. I get my stitch out tomorrow. Is it normal to lose some of your range of motion? Can this loss be permanent? The doctor told me no pushups for 6 weeks but looking at the post I will have a much longer recovery. Are there any exercises I can do to gain the strength in my right wrist?

@DartmouthHitchcock So I am still unable to do pushups and my doctor told me that the screw he used was too long. He has suggested that we take the screw out. I am wondering if taking the screw out will make my scaphoid more susceptible to being broke again. I am an avid mountain biker and see falling in my near future.

    @jongsin Hey!
Aw really? sorry to hear about that.
My hand is slowly making progress, it took a while to bend it again Im still not really able to bend it back but Im able to move my thumb and do most of the stuff I could do before I broke it :)
I do physio on it once every 2 weeks. My doc told me that it could take up to 6 months before it will be back to normal as it still feels very bruised and I broke it 4 months ago.

I got a repetitive scaphoid bone fracture actual fracture was 4 years ago and it is a non-Union fracture. Done the CT scan and MRI. The doctor suggested going for bone grafting surgery. I am confused about what should I do as the surgeon comments on it can be like gambling can work or not. Bone grafting surgery how effective or any other replacement scaphoid surgery like as metal hip in hip replacement surgery?

Soumya Priyadarshini I could still kind of write while I had the cast on, but it was difficult. If you broke yours, when you take the cast off, your wrist or wherever will be numb for a few days and it will feel weird to write. I play badminton and you need your wrist for that. It is hard to move your wrist in a cast, which makes it difficult to do daily activities.

Broke mine 3 months ago. Scaphoid isn't fusing back together and ive got the op in about 2 months time, they're taking bone grafts from the pelvis and fusing it with a screw. I'm shitting myself about it, because the pain has reduced significantly over the past 3 weeks and I can now do a closed fist press up, so I'm having second thoughts about the surgery... it's fully broken but there's still a chance that it can heal without the op.... right?

What is the minimm and the maximum time that it takes for a scafoid to be healed?I have my arm put in a cast for about a month and the doctor said to keep it untill 29th os December.I am very afraid of this fraction cause I know that this kind of fraction is dificult to be healed. Will I have to do any physiotherapies o something after the cast removal? Thanks in advance!

Around 7 years ago, based on a digital x-ray, my doctor told me I had scaphoid fracture. I was asked to rotate my wrist in warm/hot water and I did. It healed for most purposes. But once in a while I get pain in my wrist sometimes and it last for a few weeks/months; usually because of sports activity. And everytime it occurs, there is a small bump on the back of my wrist near the middle of wrist. Do you think the fracture is still there? What can I do to heal it completely. Any other comments?

@@nitinkumar7141 it has not reappeared in any significant way for some time. If I feel it, I just do this. 1-2 week of complete rest. After that I do not do anything that would cause pain. That usually does it for me. I might also use the warm water wrist rotation exercise.

    Hi,
I fractured my scaphoid on the 27th of Nov, got a cast on the 8th of dec. Took the cast off on the 21st of january, and today (March 2nd) I still feel pain. It's gotten better from when i initially took the cast off but it still hurts when i bend my wrist. From your experience how long do scaphoid injuries usually take to heal? Is something wrong if it's still not 100% healed after 3 months?
    Thanks

      Hi,
I am in the same exact situation. Had my cast removed after 8 weeks. And have been undergoing physiotherapy for the last 2 months. It still hasn't healed completely and there is pain when I bend it. How long did it take you to heal completely?

The cast is fucking annoying, with a normal cast u don’t have ur thumb casted allowing u to wear jumpers and jackets etc but with it cast you end up stretching ur clothes or just not even being able to wear them
