Hey docs! Thanks for sharing this amazing video, very informative and I love every single detail especially Dr. Weening love your personality 😍 looking forward on your next video 😊
You are very welcome Alida!! Thanks for watching and subscribing
I just came across this video at the right time having started my PT today. Oh yeah, I fell (pulled) down backwards as my granddog was enjoying a sudden exciting moment behind me and my hand was in the leash loop. :( I picked up Vd3/k2 drops yesterday thinking it would help with the healing. Thanks again rockin talkin Docs! Subscribed a while ago. 😊
Thanks so much Shirley! Best of luck with your recovery.
Distal radial fracture intra articular repair one week ago and I’m a pianist any other helpful tricks ❤
had a scaphoid fracture surgery with 2 screws in.. after 4 weeks of cast my fingers r stiff as hell. cant strengthened them. I'm having a wrist brace on for another month.. will definitely do this... starting with my fingers. thank u
You are very welcome coats. Yes fingers can get thick and swollen for sure. Good luck with your physio. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did.
Can i do this 2 weeks after the wrist fracture surgery, i'm finding it difficult to do supination and pronation movement???
I broke both my wrist many years ago. Never been the same since. The cold weather made them hurt, but that went away. I can't lift heavy weights because I will reinjure myself. Sucks! Today, they should have technology and medicines that will make you heal better and faster.😉
Hi JJ. We are not quite there yet. Sorry to hear about your pain. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
Should have, but they don't have.
Wearing a helmet is 100% best advice. But when you fall your natural reaction is to extend your arms to brade for impact

I broke my wrist and the guy on the left in the begging im pretty sure was my doctor who looked at my xrays
I unfortunately had a Galleazzi fracture this summer requiring plates for the open reduction of the radius and pins for the closed reduction of the radioulnar joint.
Cast came off 33 days after surgery. I’m 57 years old.
I’m also a musician playing lots of piano and guitar and pronation is particularly important- was my right hand.
Supination is easy however I can barely pronate the hand beyond the anatomic position without considerable pain in the ulnar area of the rest. Although it’s only been the second day, should I expect this to subside should this be a concern? Because I’m kind of concerned lol.
Thanks
HI anthony. So it can be difficult to regain range of motion. On day 2 don't be too concerned but if it does not improve get seen sooner rather than later. Good luck. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
such goofballs :-)
Hi Tracey. Thanks? Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did.
@@TalkingWithDocs you all are cute :-) I love how humble you are- some orthos I have worked with are not as humble! But in their defense- they are probably stressed to the max too! Doc, doc and doc :-) "I tell them to hold a vase" :-) I love the humor- we need to laugh- that is good for the soul!
Just broke my wrist 2 weeks ago, a plate and 11 screws. Thank you for sharing this video although I’m nervous to move my forearm at all.
How has your recovery been... Same scenario as you..
Just seeing this. It’s been a couple months. How are you doing? You in physical therapy? How is your range of motion and stiffness? I broke mine two months ago too. I’m discouraged in my healing although they say I’m normal in it.
In 2018 I broke my L wrist and also have a plate and many screws. (I fell off of the 4th step on a ladder while painting my garden shed.) i was concerned by how long it took for my fingers to come back on line. My sister started sending me small LEGO sets to help my anxiety and to get me to use my hand more. I’m back to 95% (per Calgary Flames wrist therapist). I do now, however, have a LEGO hobby I didn’t have before the accident which is embarrassing at 65. 😂
Would love to hear how you are all doing? I’m 5 weeks post surgery (1 plate 6 screws) will start OT next week.
I'm recovering from a fractured distal radius (right arm) on Dec. 15, 2023. I didn't need surgery, thank God, but got out of my cast on Jan. 24, 2024. I'm having numbness, pain, and stiffness, so thank you for this video. I lost so much strength in my entire arm too. Ugh.
I'm having the same weakness from the middle finger on up the arm. My wrist feels like jelly 😖 Incidentally I broke my wrist December 2nd of 23
Broke my wrist - radius and ulna. Plate and 9 screws. Can't even get close to any of these things; not even assisted. Typing with one hand. Guess it will take a LONG TIME!
Same here. 9 screws. Dominant right wrist + thumb too 😢
How do you feel after a month?
@@teepee1938 Much better. I’m still in therapy. Everyone is different and it depends on where and how the break is I think it also depends on how knowledgeable the therapists are as well as patient compliance with doing the exercises given. I’m functioning, but still stiff and can’t put weight on my wrist as in doing a plant. Doesn’t even bend there yet. But there’s progress all the time even though slow.
I encourage you to keep doing what you can and don’t give up. These take longer than typical.
@@Meggerz207 are you able to face your palms up? Best i can do is neutral or sideways
@@abhishekshah11 I am almost 100% but it’s also been 4 months. I just had a follow up with my surgeon. He said it can take a year or more to be as normal as possible.
Had surgery YESTERDAY, trying to be ahead of the game with knowledge on what to expect and how to help myself. Thanks for your knowledge 😁
Thank you for the informative video. I was put in a splint two days ago and will likely be in a cast within a week. My fracture appears to be relatively minor, which is nice because I have almost zero pain or discomfort. Unfortunate thing is the fracture is on my dominate hand, so things have been interesting to say the least. Cheers.
You are very welcome. Best of luck in your recovery. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did.
Thank you for the advice I recently fell 30 ft from a tree I was trimming with no helmet and managed to only break my left wrist since I can’t work I can’t afford physical therapy so I definitely appreciate this
I did a beautiful job fracturing my left wrist! Ugh! My birthday is in a few days. I went 35 years without one fracture. I have to go see a doctor about some orthopedics next week! Thanks for going to school to fix us people who are clumsy 😂
I’m in the same boat! Shattered my left wrist while rollerblading at 32! Hope you have a speedy recovery!

How are you doing now? Is your wrist back to 100%? I am 4 weeks following surgery after distal radius fracture. Is there Hope?

I actually just fractured both of my wrists last month falling backwards on a patch of ice, so I’ve been out of commission totally for the last month. Still a few weeks to go, so I’m glad to find this video so I am better prepared for after the casts come off. Thank you!

Hope your bouncing around life again. A colleague of mine senior lady did that and drove all the way home to Long Island, I saw her from a fifth floor window. I called her and she had broken both wrists? The doc told her the steering wheel acted like a splint. God is good!
Ouch. I fractured my dominant hand (right). Thanks to my cousin's advice of moving my fingers and thumb while I had the cast on, I'm able to move perform all exercises to a good degree after cast removal, Despite the swelling and pain. It soon reduces but is painful the first 3 days. Hope you make a speedy and full recovery 🙏
I had the car accident and broke my bone my radius that attaches to the forearm I had surgery with a plate inside I'm still in pain 3 months now
Hi, how are you doing now? Did you get the full range of motion?
Hi from London UK. I broke my wrist Dec 17th 2022. It was a nasty fracture CT showed it going right through the joint. I had to wait 20 days before an ORIF was done, prior to which I suffered extreme pain. Post surgery, extreme pain continued which developed into CRPS and infection. Pregabalin 50mg twice daily with 10mg Oxycodone is managing the nerve pain but there's always breakthrough pain. Unable to so phyaio properly claw hand remains. Unable to make a fist. Another surgery was done 4 weeks ago to remove plate and screws and carpel tunnel decompression. Nerve pain is still through the roof. When I do physio fingers swell, and pain begins.😢😢 Struggling with it now and very scared will lose the use of my hand as I am unable to grip or form a fist. Using anti inflammation meds and oramorph PRN. Taking turmeric, vit c, zinc supplements.
I need a second opinion. Please assist me here. What do I do. I realise my situation is complex.Thank you!
Hi A. Sorry to hear this but it can happen for sure. A second opinion locally is a great idea but it sounds like you are doing everything you need to. Often just time. Best of luck
Hi, how are you doing now?
The “take it on the bucket” head choreography!! Hilarious!!
Hi Bebe. So that was actually not rehearsed. We had a laugh though after we saw it too. Thanks for watching.
Im 14 years old, and I broke my arm (closer to the wrist) playing basketball on Easter Sunday. I got my cast off around May 20th, and my wrist still hurts everytime I try to do something. What should I do?
I have a nonunion fracture. The doctor is removing my cast in a week after six weeks of immobilization. What happens next?
I fractured my wrist a few month's ago, went from splint to cast and now a brace. I've been flexing a lot, range is still struggling especially side to side. Still having pain in wrist, elbow and shoulder same arm.
What if 10 years later and all my doctor always said was "there's nothing we can do. Just manage the pain"
No way, Doctor Weening! You were my fracture specialist for my broken wrist lol
I call 911 I get emergency 000 in Australia - Hmm! I just had a double break cast removed. My wrist is so swollen and hot, like its burning and its painful and stiff. The day

Hello doc,
I had volar barton fracture on my right wrist 2 weeks ago . Orif with plate and screws were used to fix it 2 days after fracture. Cast has been removed and i have been given splint and told to keep moving my fingers . From next week my physio will start .
I have always been active in gym and calisthenics. I wonder if ill ever be able to get back ?
Whats your opinion about it
(My age is 22 btw(
Often you will. Just need time for the bone to heal and then lots of physio
@@TalkingWithDocs thnx doc . Hope is a good thing
Hello, what range of reps should I do these exercises? And should I hold at the end of motion? Thanks
Hi David. 10-15. A hold is always good if possible. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Just wondering if you guys use Toradol (Ketorolac) for acute Fx pain in Canada? A lot of the Ortho guys seem to be against it here in the US. Thoughts? I requested it a few years ago when I broke my mandible (apparently not all of us put our wrists out quick enough to protect our head/face 🤦♀️), and it worked fantastic, without the side effects of a narcotics.
Hi Betty. Yes we do. There are many different NSAIDs. Some physicians are concerned about bony union of fractures and fusions using NSAIDs. There are also the risks to kidney function and stomach upset but they are commonly used with supervision. Good luck and thanks for watching.
How soon after a cast-removal should i start physiotherapy....(fractured wrist) ? Thanks for your video.
Hi pookpookpook88. You are very welcome. We recommend physio as soon as you can so often 1-2 days after the cast is removed. Best of luck to you. Thanks for watching and for subscribing if you did.
Hi, Dr. Zal zal. You were my first surgeon I saw about my arthritis in my legs. I ended up getting 2 knee replacements before I was 50.
Unfortunately now I have broken my left wrist. I’ll try and see if I can send you my xray. I did a full frontal body slam on pavement trying to save my cat. No joke. So I fell and broke my left wrist. My wrist looks like it almost came all the way apart.
Very helpful information. Thank you.
Yes, I did trip over my cat.
thanks for this video.... I did have physio for two weeks(start 2 weeks after wrist fracture surgery, metal plate and screws) , 3 times a week . The last treatment was with hot towels for 15 minutes around my arm and then some more "aggressive" stretches of my wrist, more painful. That weekend after that I could do a lot more and without pain. After the weekend I got another therapist, because of vacation. She put ice on my arm before the exercise and then a few more exercises like in your video, but 3x more painful than before the weekend. After that I had a bluish swollen arm for a few days and I slept badly, it bothered me. I've stopped for a while now, do my exercises. Wait for the other physiotherapist to return in 1 week. Anyway, all in all, this seemed a bit too pushy to me... ?I'm now 4.5 weeks post surgery.
Hi Terry. Every patient and therapist combo is a bit unique. Sometimes some trial and error is involved. Best of luck to you. Thanks for watching and subscribing
@@TalkingWithDocs thank you for your answer!👍
Is there any exercises I can do with my temp cast on. I don't want to be behind when i get this off but i also don't want to damage it more or not have it set right. I have been weight lifting can I continue with leg exercises or will the blood flow to my arm be affected while pumping weights? Thanks Drs
Hi Chantal. Sorry for delay. So you want to avoid getting the cast wet with sweat so sometimes you just need to really take it easy. Lower body stuff is ok with upper body casts and vice versa for lower body casts. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
broke my lt wrist two weeks ago
I fell from a 10 foot ladder, after 5 months im still in recovery, but i have trouble with having strength and doing physical activities. I also have problems with playing sports, i can't do the right formation due to mt back starts to hurts. When i feel my helmet went flying and the ladder feel on my back, what do i need to do, to get back strength. I always feel pain and much more, i have tried to gain muscle mass and weight, but whenever i try to do any exercise my hand cramps up or hurts very bad. What should i do to regain the strenght
I feel like my cast isn't tight enough.... bc I can twist and move all of my wrist and hands... Not all the way, but a pretty good amount.... I've been keeping it moving as I am a mom and have no choice, but I was told movement is good as it bring blood flow.... But I feel when I get my cast off I will already be able to do a lot of this... Is this good or bad? Was my cast supposed to be tighter? My pain finally went away about 4 weeks in and the less pain means I'm doing even more with it. I hope I'm not slowly damaging it more if I should have a tighter cast... It is pretty roomy in here! I could slip it off if I really wanted to...
Yea boiii, broke my scaphoid and had a screw put in🤟 start put this week with pt 3 weeks post surgery
I broke my wrist - shattered - bc i didnt have treads on my nikes lol😂 and fell on mud onto a river rock. OT is over its. been almost 3 mo so this is good.
I broke my wrist in June, still can't bend my fingers its still swollen
I’m thinking a bubble suit would work for me. 😁
I'm 19 years old right now with a Minor fracture on my right wrist. My doctor gave me a wrist and forearm splint. It's been almost 3 weeks now and I'm worried when will I be able to move my wrist properly. I guess the doctor will tell me to remove my splint by next week! But I'm not sure if my arm is ready or not...Please reply !
Hi Gtx. They will do an xray and reassess. Good luck. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
Depending on your specific situation, supination can wait until a little later. First things to recover are range of motion in pronation and in neutral position (thumb facing upwards). There are many more exercises that you can do that you don't see on this video.
So yes there are unlimited exercises you can do. We would tend to disagree though as pronation is almost always close to normal right away. Neutral thumb position is 0 supination which most people have right away. Supination and extension are most commonly the hardest ones to get back. Thanks for watching
@@TalkingWithDocs I think I explained myself poorly. I meant what you said. Pronation and 0 supination are easy even post-op. I fractured my wrist on April 3rd and got operated on April 20th to reduce it with plate+screws and right now I'm 30 days post op and still having trouble with supination and full range of motion up/down and left/right. I guess that's pretty normal at this stageI've already started FKT but I'm not seeing that much progress unfortunately. The stiloid hurts like hell if supination is forced passively. :(
Yea got a screw in my scaphoid last 16th can do all these at a minor level, that’s definitely the worst
@@giovanbattistafichera8439Hi, how are you doing now?
I broke my wrist and required surgery . I now have CRPS. Is there anything that can be done or to help this.? Ps. You two are amazing
Sorry to hear this Sharie. There are some specific treatment plans that include desensitization and physio but it is a complicated problem for sure. Inquire locally and don’t give up! Best of luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Great video thxx
Hurt head with helm / helmet & almost broken neck isn't smart ! But using elbow's to prevent it is better ! Less likely to break ! Strained wrist hurts but heals if you don't have a demanding FAMILY" / life" & can sit for days to heal right ! You'll be better than OKAY"! But rotation & movement is wise !... But don't over due it ! When you know your going to take it easy that day, exercise after resting ! Than rest more !

Helloo doc n doc. I’m 62 yr old grandma & I did a not so graceful FOOSH on ice march 3. Had surgery the 10th. Surgeon never stopped in n said surg went well or nothing. I got plates n screws but I don’t know anything else. The day after surg tho I got a call from drs office and was asked… “are you doin your pronate /supinate exercises ?” I said I was TRYING but could NOT get my arm to turn that far. So here I am… 5 days post op. I still can’t pro or sup. And my thumb dosent move much at all either. I thought you’re sposed to go slow n let bones heal some before doing to much exercises ? When I try to pro/sup now it feels like my wrist bone is jamming up against the splint. Aka… splint is to tight to allow much movement. Or… it just plain hurts like hell. I tried callin docs but had to leave a VM, and they never called me back.
Hi mari. Early on it can be quite painful and the splint can be limiting. Do your best. Likely have a follow up at 2 weeks. All the best. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Good ol’ FOOSH. Thanks for killing time with some humour while I sit in the ER. Not for a wrist fracture, thankfully. It might be the morphine talking now...but that in unison head bob at the beginning 🤔

Hi MomBoys. Be careful and get better. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the vid! I had my arm cast off 3 weeks ago after surgery for an ECU sub-sheath tear 8 weeks ago (an injury from 1.5 years ago when I broke my triquetrum). I wore a thermoplastic splint gradually less and less for the 2 weeks after, and now I’m out of that too. I’m trying but I still can’t pronate or supinate at all really. Is that normal? I’m worried it’s stuck because of scar tissue or something….
We would say that stiffness is common but the longer it exists the higher the chance it would be permanent
Got three weeks to go.
I can still play my🎷😉
Wrist fracture plate and six screws surgery March 25. Two days ago stitches taken out. Was given a removable splint. Is it safe for me to remove the splint and do the exercises that you guys showed on this video.

Hey I am 13 so I hurt my wrist and I took an x ray. The report says there is a possibility of plastic fracture what does this mean?

Dr. Weening... you performed a knee replacement surgery on my father a few years ago. (Keating). I had been searching for information on my Dad's procedures that he had had before knee replacement. And I happened to see this video... And while searching... I just happened to have a cast on (& pins) for a broken wrist! Obviously I hadn't seen your other videos! LOL! I was put in a short cast today, coming off 4 weeks of a long cast, is there any type of exercises I can do at this point?

What kind of anesthetic is used while a broken wrist is re-set, is the patient completely unconscious ?
Hi pookpookpook88. So usually it would be propofol and possibly ketamine. There are many other combinations but they are designed to make you sedated, reduce your pain and often forget. Great question. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did.

What are your preferences for treating Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome, CRPS, post distal radius fracture? Also what are your opinions on Vitamin C administration for the same to diminish symptoms?
Hi Denise. CRPS is a complicated problem with many different strategies to reduce the symptoms. They often include desensitization programs, medications including pain control, NSAIDs and nerve agents. Physio will often play a role. Topicals are often employed as well. The best approach is to get it addressed sooner rather than later and stick with it. Good luck and thanks for watching.
