Honestly, the moment of Hideout Helm that absolutely seals the deal of setting the mood is that this theme keeps playing as you’re selecting your Kong in the Tag Barrel. No more fun and games. No room to screw up. No turning back. If that timer hits zero, you lose and DK Isles get blown to pieces. If there was ever a time to get serious, it’s now. One of my absolute all-time favorite levels in gaming.
the dk64 soundtrack is easily my favourite game soundtrack EVER. this is my favourite song in the game. therefore, its my fave video game track ever. this shouldve been in brawl, dammit! GO DK 64!
I've never felt something as intense as walking into the helm, the laugh, the timer, no more tag barrel music, the distant cries. Also I'm like 8. I can't describe it. Take me back...
As much as K Rool's willing to harm his folower to make sure the blast-o-matic is repaired, the capstone of this, in the pre-Hideout Helm cutscene, where he insists on firing the Blast-O-Matic despite his engineers insisting that it hasn't been properly safety-tested and could blow them all to smithereens, is actually the entirely correct, if extremely reckless, decision to make in that context, as the Kongs are breaking into the Kremlings' base of operations *literally at that very moment.* There is _no more time_ for preparations or fine-tuning. K. Rool's only two options at that point are to proceed straight to endgame regardless of the risks, or to watch his Evil Plan be torn to pieces.
I mean I'd argue he could just as easily choose not to use a superweapon on a defenseless civilian target and the kongs wouldn't need to fuck w his shit but...
My heart was racing when I first got to the Hideout. The timer, the music, the constant mini games, so intense. I did it as fast as I could. Then I did it! Sigh... Now I miss that feeling.
Oh man I remember this level, my older brother and I had a hard time because since there was a time limit we were always under pressure. Plus even if we paused the game, the timer still kept on going. I was young back then and I just couldn't pass this level but my older brother was able to. This was truly a superb game on one of the most amazing consoles that ever existed, the N64! I miss my childhood. :(
I completed DK 64 just now and i gotta say, this track would definitely be my all time favorites in this game. The buildup and tension of this piece really conveys how the life of DK Island is in your hands for the Kongs. Truly makes this a very epic and unforgettable moment!
It is amazing how Rare lured you into collecting blueprints by offering you golden bananas. Near the end of the game, we learn why they were so important! Snide offered the Kongs nice side dishes and provided them the final course near the end. BTW HOW DID SNIDE GET A HOLD OF 40 GOLDEN BANANAS IN THE FIRST PLACE?!
He was one of K.Rool's countless minions before being fired and substituted by an incompetent kremling, so to get revenge he took some of DK's stolen golden bananas with him and offered them back to the Kongs if they collected the Blast-o-Matic's blueprints with K.Rool's Kasplats Basically he became a traitor to the Kremlings after being treated like shit by them
Jungle Japes was Nice. Angry Aztec was a Challenge. Frantic Factory was interesting. Gloomy Galleon was Frustrating. Fungi Forest was Tedious. Crystal Caves was Calm. Creepy Castle was Disturbing. And Hideout Helm is EPIC.
I love this song! The build-up is fantastic. It gets the adrenaline pumping and really makes you feel like you're breaking into an enemy base. It's too bad we don't see too many games like this anymore. I miss Rare. :'(
Exactly. I remember playing this level as a kid and being stressed the hell out. My palms were sweaty af lol. This music was defiantly one of the reasons why. I love how the developers made it where the music didn't change even when you're in a Tag Barrel or get a Power-Up. Showed the seriousness of the situation.
The music, and the time limit, and the K.Rool laugh each 5 or 10 minutes created suspense and gives you a feeling that you are doing this to save your turf before its too late. One of my best experience in gaming. RARE done a great job creating that part of the game.
This song just exudes a feeling of urgency and intensity. I love it! When I was in grade school, me, my brother, and dad all attempted to beat the hideout helm level together...we didn't beat it the first time, but it was loads of fun.
hideout helm scared the crap out of me when i first went there. there was a long period before i went to challange it again, or even listen to the track again. yet i practically remembered the song note by note. why is that? because this track is one of, if not the best, video game tracks i have ever heard! such an epic, epic track. this really would have been good in brawl!
You enter the enemy's base, the final... you see K. Rool going mad, he wants to blow up your island and mashes his buttons like crazy, because you destroyed HIS Island in DKC2. His crew told him that the machine could blow up BOTH islands if he starts it now. K. Rool didn't care. He wanted you dead. He would even suicide just to kill you. K. Rool = Cruel. Rare was godlike....
I remember this. First time I went there, it gave me this feeling to rush or I might lose. To make it harder, I also did the arena before shutting down the machine. With 99 seconds to survive, it's going to be frustrating if you fail :P. Time almost went to zero by the time I finished the last kong to get the last medal. Thanks for uploading it.
I know I'm replying to a 9 year ago comment but I'd say they inflicted very different kinds of stress, and I enjoy both tracks immensely for it. This track screams urgency, action, challenge, and high stakes. Yet, especially during the higher octave portion, it's oddly encouraging, as if it's rooting for you to focus and overcome this challenge. Meanwhile Majora's Mask Final Hours... oh that's a very different beast. Whereas Hideout Helm is intended to ratchet up the tension, Final Hours takes the opposite approach. Whereas everyone is fighting as hard as they can to prevent their destruction in the former, many have already given up in the latter as they simply lack any means to meaningfuly fight. Even you yourself cannot do so for much of the game, all you can do then is to rewind to avoid a cruel fate while leaving the rest around you to suffer. The tolling of the bell, the increasingly frequent quakes, the somber tone all come together to say "you've already lost, please finish what you need to, it is inevitable." Hideout Helm had such thick atmosphere to it; the combination of this song with a timer breathing down your neck...it helped to cement the awesomeness of that stage in my mind
I could just hear this playing if there was a countdown for a nuke counting down for an hour in any state in the US, you would only have one hour to prepare and get the hell out. That's what this song symbolizes I think
The timer at the bottom with the conservative font, the lack of music in the switch barrel, the lack of music when you go into a transformation barrel, all so effective in setting up a tense atmosphere!
The Donkey Kong Country series, Banjo-Kazooie series, Diddy Kong Racing, Golden Eye, and Perfect Dark would all like a word with you. DK 64 being part of the DK series should have been commercially successful on name alone (and I see nothing that says otherwise). Where are you getting this "Rare games are underrated and overlooked" stuff from? Only notable commercial failure I found was Conker's Bad Fur Day (because Nintendo wouldn't promote it).
There are so many good things about this song and level, but i think my favourite is honestly the opening drumbeat. It instantly emulates a heart beat, which this song is 100% about building anxiety, the moment the song starts you heart rate rises, and you know, everything is on the line.
Music really gives life to video games. I video game with no memorable music has a less chance of holding my attention, but DK64 did not disappoint in that area. You totally felt like this was one of your final moments. Pushing for time like crazy!
For this epic game on the N64 this year, I got the Nintendo Coin on Boxing Day, the Rareware Coin MLK jr day, and beat this level and last boss 101% all 3 save files everything collected eon every nook and cranny explored Oscar Day.
And an interesting last boss fight it was too like loving DK Arcade almost got Nintendo Coin first try. Like with Diddy had 7 seconds left before KO and another file 1/4 melon with glove about to hit when KO
The universe doesn't have to explode to end the human existence, our planet alone exploding is enough. Unless we master interstellar travel, or if other being of the same species as us are spread every where somewhere in the universe.
0:03 Horray!! Start of the song 0:07 Now we're adding a beat 0:21 Everybody CLAP!! 0:35 Piano/Keyboard/Xylophone (whatever it is) kicks in 0:55 Alright, now for the scary effects that make it sound awesome 1:05 Drums and Xylophone kick in 1:11 Nerrrrrrrrrr Nerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Nerrrrrrrrrrrr Nerrrrrrrrrrrrr (Dunno what the instrument is called) 1:37 Some scary sound effect (sounds like a horn on a truck) 1:46 The best part of the song starts now!! 2:31 Song starts again. Ilovethissong
I swear, anytime I've played this level, I tense up and feel like the stakes have never been higher in a video game. :O It's all in the song. Grant Kirkhope knew how to heighten the atmosphere of a game to a whole new level.
I remember when I was still a kid. When I was in this place, HELL I was stressed. But when I played recently, I realized that you have PLENTY of time to do it, and there's no rush at all xD
I had spent my entire childhood (6-11) to get to hideout helm and when i got there i told myself "this is the moment, the moment to finally put this to rest and prove that you are no loner a child" it was really emotional....
When a game get that dramatic. You know it's a good game, especially one about monkeys and crocodiles! I'm speechless too about the way this level made me feel. So amazing and awesome. Never played a game that epic.
I did know there was quite a lot of stuff to get, I usually am too lazy to get everything, but now I'm trying to get everything, it's not too bad, it just takes forever.
wow that's great dude. i borrowed it by a friend when i was 10. now seven years later i found it pretty cheap in a retrogame store and bought it. it's in my opinion the second-best game that n64 has to offer.
when i beat this level and found out the music changed to a "calmer" version i started a new file and when i finally got back to it i would just stand there and listen to the music
This song is the scariest of them all. Imagine fighting to deactivate a machine that will destroy your home if you don't act quickly. I enjoyed this level a LOT! The timer was small compared to the Golden Banana games.
I'll add this song to Time Shift, too. Right when the boarding of the dinghy to outsmart the custard flood is rushed and dark ash clouds blacken the Halloween night sky, and later the phantom coo-coo clock blares 13!
Lemme explain what I meant. Zelda is just as long as Donkey Kong. Zelda has a huge overworld, tons of cities, three dungeons, only to surprise you with six more, and two extra dungeons for Ganon and the Mirror of Truth. DK64 only has an overworld, seven levels, Hideout Helm, and the final boss. That's it. With less levels, but larger ones, you truly appreciate the atmosphere. I can draw maps of Jungle Japes, Mumbo's Mountain, or Bob-Omb Battlefield better than the Water Temple.
love that part of the game with the epic music and the time limit at the bottom of the screen it makes you feel like there's a bomb and you have deactivate it before time runs out
@peeses6 actually the time limit is to stop the Blast-O-Matic not get through the whole hideout helm, its possible to do without a blueprint its just EXTREMELY hard and requires you to be PERFECT at the minigame tasks.
i was like 8 when i got here. when i got here i thought" this is the time. This is the time i finally put all that i worked for throughout my childhood to understand and master. I must do this to finally put the game to rest and do what i should have done a long time ago. i had to win..........
Too long? It's not long. It's giving you time to admire the work put into every level. Zelda rushes them by so fast that I've forgotten everything that happens.
Yes! I wasn't the only one who thought this! I was convinced that I would have to restart if I didn't finish in time...so I was very hesitant to start the Hideout Helm. Luckily, I did finish in the time limit anyways (I got like, 37 of the blueprints maybe?) but...yeah. Good times, good times...
Wow, I cannot describe to you the ordeal my older brother and I went through during this tedious level. With the timer counting down, every minute was vital, based on how many blueprints you collected of course. But the worse part was that whenever we wanted to take a break and paused the game, the timer still counted down. It was stressful. It was as if the game implied, "Oh no, you've made it this far, and it's either you're going to do this in one shot or it's game over". We both got nervous.
Ive had the origanl game box and ext pak since 6th grade annd itstill works loverly! DK was one of the most epic and perfect games! I miss that old R.W. though like everyone else does...
Edward Johnson I really enjoyed Click Clock Wood. But I love all of his video game music! But when I went back through playing DK 64 again a couple months ago, I heard this song and immediately wrote down that I need to download it!
i was 9 when i got here when i arrived i said to myself" this is the moment. i have spent my entire childhood to master and progress through the game. It is now time tosee if i really am as good as id hope i am. Its time to finish this" life changing moment............
oh god this stage... i remember getting to it and spending like 10 minutes on one minigame and when the timers got to zero, i shut the game off XD that was when i still owned it though
Oh, no. It's pretty long, but it just never got old for me. I liked playing as different characters and using their abilities to interact with the huge worlds. It's BIG. That's the word. Even today, no 3d platformer has matched DK64 in terms of sheer scope. Even with modern technology, nothing compares to DK64's vast, constantly interactive levels.
Man, I remember when i went to the character barrel and usually i would press z+a and land on top of it. This time i did it and missed and freaked out just cause of the time.
I remember when I was playing DK64 way back, and I had trouble with the 5th boss. I remember there was a guy called Jamie that was playing this level, and I loved the music. I remembered that one dramatic part near the end for a while, then when I did my 101% run for DK64 6 years later I remembered.
When this theme still plays while you’re choosing a kong from the barrel, it’s pure anxiety.
It's literally the scariest thing ever, almost like an invasion of your safe place
And the timer doesnt stop either
Not to mention the double timers you while doing the minigames

Going through this level was hype as hell.
I remember playing this level for the first time with my sister over 10 years ago. It is still the most intense gaming moment of my life.
This theme is even more epic than i remembered

Who needs Final Hours to cause stress when you can have this?
I know I'm replying to a 9 year ago comment but I'd say they inflicted very different kinds of stress, and I enjoy both tracks immensely for it.
This track screams urgency, action, challenge, and high stakes. Yet, especially during the higher octave portion, it's oddly encouraging, as if it's rooting for you to focus and overcome this challenge. While you may have short changed yourself on time if you didn't collect the blueprints, you'd only be hearing this theme if you were already powerful enough to overcome the challenge. If I had to pick an IRL background music for defusing something that could go boom, this would be it. Fitting since that's effectively what you're doing at this point in the game.
The tolling of the bell, the increasingly frequent quakes, the somber tone all come together to say "you've already lost, please finish what you need to, it is inevitable."
TL:DR both are masterpieces in atmosphere
Hideout Helm had such thick atmosphere to it; the combination of this song with a timer breathing down your neck...it helped to cement the awesomeness of that stage in my mind
I could just hear this playing if there was a countdown for a nuke counting down for an hour in any state in the US, you would only have one hour to prepare and get the hell out. That's what this song symbolizes I think
Yeah, like if Putin decided to nuke the earth just cuz
pff putin more likely trump
Well it’s becoming more likely now
The timer at the bottom with the conservative font, the lack of music in the switch barrel, the lack of music when you go into a transformation barrel, all so effective in setting up a tense atmosphere!

@peeses6 actually the time limit is to stop the Blast-O-Matic not get through the whole hideout helm, its possible to do without a blueprint its just EXTREMELY hard and requires you to be PERFECT at the minigame tasks.
They need to remake this game for the 3DS already.
Jason Shipman It's out on the Wii U eShop.
i was like 8 when i got here.
when i got here i thought" this is the time.
The best song by Grant Kirkhope. My brother and I used this epic song from DK 64 2 study 4 school
lol, limited time to study before exam. Now GO!!
Edward Johnson I really enjoyed Click Clock Wood. But I love all of his video game music! But when I went back through playing DK 64 again a couple months ago, I heard this song and immediately wrote down that I need to download it!
i was 9 when i got here
when i arrived i said to myself" this is the moment. i have spent my entire childhood to master and progress through the game. It is now time tosee if i really am as good as id hope i am. Its time to finish this"
life changing moment............
oh god this stage...
i remember getting to it and spending like 10 minutes on one minigame and when the timers got to zero, i shut the game off XD that was when i still owned it though
Ha! Yes. I freakin' LOVE this song. So intense. I had a hard time finding it, too, so thanks for uploading.
I have never passed the game but I spend days watching my brother do it. It was totally worth it!
this soundtrack is one of my favorite. i sometime hear myself trying to humm this... good time
God i love this song.... i was always whistling to this song while i was playing this level XD good times goooooood times.
the memories are coming back so bad its bringing a tear to my eye. god rare why has thou forsaken your people.
Everyone else who played the game: DK 64
JToH players: ToFT and ToWER
There is also the cohad paintball challenge
Well I have everything now, today I'm doing Hideout Helm, will see if I can do it in the ten base minutes.
I think the only platform adventure game on the 64 that comes close to matching its length is Banjo Tooie.
the timer plus the music psyces me out
Suspense and action at the same time! It's so cool! Great job!
Man, I remember when i went to the character barrel and usually i would press z+a and land on top of it. This time i did it and missed and freaked out just cause of the time.
I LOVE Donkey Kong 64 it's the best version of The Donkey Kong Country Series.
I loved this game one of my favorites
When the hurricane is coming…
The way it all builds to fucking 2:00 - 2:31 is glorious. So much tension, even if you got every blueprint and have like an hour to do the level.
I remember when I was playing DK64 way back, and I had trouble with the 5th boss. I remember there was a guy called Jamie that was playing this level, and I loved the music. I remembered that one dramatic part near the end for a while, then when I did my 101% run for DK64 6 years later I remembered.
