My uncle Bobby was the town drunk my entire early life. That’s what he was known for. I heard he started drinking right after his 1st wife died right after child birth. But he stopped drinking on his own 1 day after most of our immediate family went out to Cali to visit one of my aunts for summer vacation. Well while out there he got drunk and got arrested and embarrassed my grandparents. It hurt him so much that he never had another drink. He became the most reliable person in the family after that. Went to church all the time and sung in the choir, who knew he could sing. And he got married again. Thank God the last 20 years of his life was productive. RIP Uncle Bobby.

Alcoholism is really such a sad disease. My Dad is struggling through this right now, and has been for around 20 years. He's recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer of the lungs, liver, lymph nodes, etc, and, at 66 years old, he looks like he's in his 90's. We've been told that he's reaching the end stage now and it will honestly be a blessing when he passes because alcohol excess has really taken it's toll, not only on him, but on us, his family, too

      Tori,
All prayers and good wishes sending your way. I’m so sorry your Father is suffering.
As a daughter in a similar position, this is the part of addiction fallout many don’t understand.
The constant worry and anxiety over our Parents well being.
It causes cptsd in childhood experience. Trauma.
      We are witness’s who care.
I wish you peace. I know you deserve it. X

@@nicoles7800 thank you so much, Nicole. It's the most difficult thing I've ever had to go through, to witness the man I always looked up to falling apart right in front of me and feeling so helpless. So many people disagree that it is a disease. They're of the opinion that he chose to live like this and, to a degree, yes, I guess he did. But what they don't understand is that the debilitating effects of alcoholism take quite some time to manifest. By the time that happens, often it's just too late. It has such a grip on that person, that they're just not strong enough to fight it. It destroys lives. My Dad is not the man I remember from my childhood. Sure, there's still a part of him deep within that I'll always treasure, but my Dad, for the most part, died a long time ago. Thank you for your words and prayers. Sending light and love your way, too, and to everyone else who is struggling in one way or another 💜

So sorry you have gone through this for so long, and still going through this now, with it ending in a sad way. My heart also goes out to your dad for all his regret he has to face from life with no resolution as this disease takes his life. How very sad for him. I hope you, he, and all your family can make the best possible of your time left together and it is only filled with love, with no regrets for you and other family survivors. Prayers to you, your dad, and all your family for all the very best. God bless you all.🙏🏼❤

Something I don't think I would've said or cared about in the throes of everything (Presidency) or during the "Bush girls gone wild College Days." nickiz life It’s taken me more time that I’d like to really accept this bit of advise from my SIL who suffered from the same problem when she told me this: “Acceptance is Stage 5 in Grieving, because you’re grieving a relationship that will NEVER BE WHAT YOU WANT/WANTED” When I said something like “...but if” or “...when she” my SIL would repeat “NEVER, never,never...” No if’s or buts-accept the loss & move on & accept that your acceptance may not be perfect❤️Denial, Anger & Bargaining... one step I’m forgetting 😀...& ACCEPTANCE is the last & most difficult one I finally accepted that I may never get completely over it the way that I wanted to, but I had to accept that my grief wasn’t going to keep me from my Joy, which is non-negotiative (sp?) No one is perfect but I’ll be darned if that disease was going to destroy one more life That’s taking responsibility for our own joy & it’s pretty great from this side! Practice embracing your joy & happiness & thank

I would agree ! If one parent or both parents have a SUD, it can be horrible not only for the individual who has an addiction, but their spouse, and if there is a child or multiple children involved, it can brutal for them ! Because they will always take a "Backseat" to the parents' SUD. Sometimes, depending how deep the addiction is (daily user, recreational etc), the financial priority for the individual who has the SUD becomes the addiction, and not to invest in their children. Moreover, if there is domestic violence involved, that only exacerbates the problems.
Personally, I believe that in order to assist the individual with the SUD, one must get to the core of the issues, and figure out why they self soothe. Last, once the individual is fully committed toward sobriety, is willing to complete the work, then, success (elimination) is definitely possible !! 👍👍
The main goal, is to be satisfied within your own skin, so to speak, without any substances.

It does start often in the pregnancy, e.g. drugs, smoking = high risk of ADHD Too much media consumption is of no help there either, leave it undiagnosed (the kid is just "lively" and society worships their needs beyond what is actually healthy), and any kind of addictionand/or high risk behaviour (e.g., early/unwanted pregnencies) is very very likely. Trauma is the other main cause, and never judge the size of any, one war-combat veteran may be fine, another person may suffer from bullying, they don't make it up, you recognize it simply in the bs they do, while thinking that's okay/normal! Alcohol and gambling used to be the drugs of choice for ages, but the economy came up with more subtle and complex ways to benefit from them - I for one even count the overboarding tourism of late among those! It's not a viscious circle though, there needs to be more awarness in society, but even more so in poltics! This is not just expensive, it destroys relationships and/or communities, the environment (the more we consume, exploit animals...), ultimately it kills. Wanna heel the world, either heel yourself or your neighbour first.

All the fresh light of day disappears for them. It's gone. Maybe 55 years of life disappeared. I was lucky though, midst distorted peer pressure since very young. They would put a glass of alcoholic beverage in front of me, and I would take one swallow or two of it: and my appetite for it always clicked off. It is actually easy. Transparency of talking about it is one thing. Another thing is, that I know from looking at Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Tommy and Chris; that Stevie actually won it. Against the hard speed dope booze tricks that get dumped on innocent. I think that Stevie realized when he Stepped Up, that he was one who never desired to make a sadist parasite act against a person. Knowing that, he could be happy again. Therefore, he is really respected for Stepping Up. A real, good Texan. He was one who, together with his team, got the freedom to be Not Struggling With It.
