    I think A Few Good Men is one of the best motion pictures ever made. The script is tight and flawless, the actors really know what they’re doing and make it feel so real, and it’s compelling from start to finish.

      It's a very good movie, very entertaining but also *very* unrealistic. As a former criminal lawyer I will tell you that Tom Cruise's character could not possibly be *that* good at trial with having zero experience in a trial setting. That's like saying someone who has never played basketball can beat an NBA player. Not going to happen. It's a practice thing. He may be brilliant and talented, and with practice may become the best trial lawyer in the country, but with no practice he will not be even good or average. In law school we were taught, and it's true, that it takes about 10 years of constant trial practice to become competent, not great, competent. As someone who has tried criminal cases I can attest to this fact. Also, there is no way Cruises' character would ask whether Jessup ordered the Code Red, and if Cruise was stupid enough to ask this question, no way Jessup admits it. Never happens, ever in real life.

      Lew Stone Nah, I disagree. The movie had realistic locations, uniforms & characters. And It doesn’t take everyone a long time to be good at their job or get lucky. Also, some soldiers are bold and, just like Tom Cruise’s character, they will sometimes challenge authority. I only wish more of them did.

    I guess that when a role fits your character so well like Col. Jessup played by Jack Nicholson, you just "nail it" every time. Maybe those lines are SO ingrained in his persona that he could almost perfect those scenes in his sleep. What a cast too.

    As a story its basically a John Grisham type of story, run of the mill lawyer comes of age with a the military angle. As a movie with that heavyweight cast of actors it became an entertaining movie.

    What strikes me is that no matter how unlikable the character was there is one undeniable fact, that is that when bullets are flying, no one but guys like this get the job done.

    • @clcortelyou
      @clcortelyou 3 года назад +4

      With all due respect, this is simply not true.
      We do not have to accept the excesses of the world's Col. Jessups as the necessary cost of security. I went to graduate school (seminary) in DC with several Pentagon officers with combat experience who were training for pastoral ministry. They would not have condoned Jessup's fictional acts and they had more than enough courage, conviction, and honor to carry out the mission for which they had volunteered.

      @@clcortelyou The military is a wide range of people but I think that many of the men in leadership (not all)are exactly like this. I have seen young men cry because of things they were ordered to do. It is nice to think that we are all doing what's right but that is not realistic. BTW I served 66 to 68 and I know many that will disagree with you from first hand experience.

      The notion that people whose whole careers are centred around protecting people and trying to make the world a safer place can also be outright bullies or a law unto themselves is preposterous.
      Takes a hell of a person to act calm when bullets are flying without losing their integrity or compassion… that’s what the best military leaders are made of and this film knew it.

    The moral "ambivalence of this movie is what makes it so remarkable. What people don't realize is that both Cruise, as the prosecutor & Nicholson as Jessup are both "good guys" in this story. It's just that Col Jessup, while doing what he thought necessary to maintain the integrity of his command, also had to take full responsibility for his "failures" as a leader.

    • @kutulu1976
      @kutulu1976 10 месяцев назад

      If you think Jessup is a good guy of the movie, you've got a seriously different moral code than I do. He believes in brutalizing and bullying the weaker, and he is a hypocrite about following orders because he disobeyed the code red order.

    I knew Jack Nicolson was something special as an actor when I saw him in "Five Easy Pieces." Nothing short of great. Then "Carnal Knowledge." Watch the scene when he's arguing (yelling/screaming) with Ann Margaret in the bedroom. It's better than his acting in "A Few Good Men" - - in my opinion.

      Indeed, hard to pick a winner between those two, but I give Pacino the slight edge merely because I can look at a small sampling of movies (Godfather/Scarface/Scent of a Woman) and find it hard to believe it's the same guy playing those parts. He pulls them off flawlessly. Especially Tony Montana. A different hairdoo and a little pigment to the skin. I still find it hard to believe that's the same guy that tries to rob a Brooklyn bank.

There was no working through a struggle, dealing with the intimidation, nothing.

      This is the first time Cruise proved he could really act. Before this movie, he did mostly popcorn romcoms and action-fluff movies. This movie showcased his abilities, and yet also allowed him to be damn funny. I remember when this movie came out, and I was really surprised at how good he was in this. I think this performance was THE high point of his career and maybe even should have netted him an Oscar. IMO, he should look for more roles like this one.
