Mike is my grandad, I watch this documentary a few times a year as it has both him and my family in it, it always makes me cry! Wish I got to spend more time with him and get to know him as an adult, I only knew him as a kid and he was the biggest softie with me and my sisters as scary as he seemed on runaround 😂 but I’m so grateful to be able to just watch his stand up or his films whenever I miss him. Thank you for uploading this❤
I'm in the U.S., and only know Mike Reid from EastEnders. He was perfectly cast playing the role of Frank Butcher. He was a natural man. Guys like that don't grow on trees.
My only memory of him was the TV show 'runaround' which I watched every one I could.. Knew nothing about him or his life until watching this video. He will always be one of my favourites.
RIP Mike Reid. Still watching in 2019. Beautiful family. Very sad ending. He really was a proper London geezer. A true gentleman. Loved watching his golf programmes on different golf courses.
He was a lovely man. I have fond memories of him presenting Runaround when i was a schoolboy. I also remember him on Saturday nights telling jokes on The Comedians TV show. He was a legend. RIP Mike.
51 and I Still remember watching Run Around like it was yesterday. Mike was a legend. I remember watching him just as much as a kid as I did any other time though out is career. Good comic and he was brilliant in EastEnders him being the only reason I ever did watch that awful depressing soap. Gone but not forgotten, RIP Mike you left your mark on this nation. 👍🇬🇧
Mike Reid was the Don, a funny man, a comedy legend, and as Frank Butcher he was GOLD, pure GOLD, my favourite soap character EVER, God bless you Mike Reid 👍👍
Very moving, knew almost none of this stuff about Mike except for his TV standup in the early 1970's - the biggest tribute anyone can have is that the people left behind love you very much, and for Mike it's that.
I’ve never heard the story of his kids dying, son’s schizophrenia etc. For Mike to carry on with work and not show his emotions. A very strong man. I loved him as Frank, Eastenders not been the same without him. Miss you lots Mike
I had the pleasure of meeting & getting to know his family as I used to go out with his cousin many years ago. Very warm, welcoming, friendly, genuine people!
He was great Mike Reid. Old school type of guy or geezer as he would say. We don't really find geezers like Mike anymore in the UK. Shame. I think he was a wonderful man and I love his attitude to life. For all his hardships (and he had many) he just got on with it. That's so old school and a good way to be. Life waits for no one so as Mike say's "part of life, shrug your shoulders, wipe your mouth walk away and get on with it - don't let life beat you". Wise words Mike. Thank you!
Biggest compliment you could give him is much his family lived him......and his wife! what a diamond she is. A real London guy and family, not many about anymore..... unfortunately. Now yr lucky to hear the English language spoken let alone a London accent.
I am impressed by this actor who I only new from EastEnders ,but I see now that he could do it all ,rest in peace , greetings from Benjamin from Holland 👋
RUclips algorithm thank you, lots of stuff I didn't know and so glad I watched. Had me welling up at the end. A hard looking exterior but heart of gold
Just got home from work in soho, and my dad who was from islington said " watch this man on this show, his the funnist comic ive seen, he sounds like us", the show obviously was The Comedians, 1971
Liked him as a presenter when I was kid in Runaround ' G..G.. Gooo!' As the years went on I saw him in TV roles and then stand up comic. What a character, you can tell his family is first, and is a real decent funny guy with never a dull moment with a very humerous outlook on life. A real diamond, I bet his family as well as us fans really never stop thinking of him.
Going back about 40 years we had our works Christmas do in Southend, sort of cabaret dinner night with music and comedians and Mike was the star of the show. I was in my late teens and not much of a drinker. They had bottles of Blue Nun wine on our table and I was guzzling it down like water. Anyway I fell asleep at the table during his act and by all accounts he accumulated quite a few laughs at my expense. I never lived it down at work, I was ribbed mercilessly for a long time after. Always loved Mike but didn't get to see too much of him that night haha!
A remarkable talent and a genuinely lovely man. He did great work on Granada TV's The Comedians and on EastEnders, he created a brilliant and original character in Frank Butcher. He left us too soon but his legacy is never forgotten. Thanks for the memories Mike ❤ 😊
Followed much of Mike's career: absolutely wonderful actor and comedian - just wonderful. Was an avid Eastenders fan back then but when Mike left, I just stopped watching it. Today, it's bloody awful!! If only you could come back, Mike - RIP big man!
RIP Mike Reid. He gave us so much joy. While he was on East Enders, he was so entertaining. His wife "Pat" in the show had great chemistry. I miss him.
Proper old school. Don’t make them like that no more. Reminds me of my grandad. Proper man’s man. Love it. Rip big fella. Touched so many hearts and made us all laugh. There isn’t one person on this earth that wouldn’t laugh at his jokes. Proper class. One off. 🫡
You were a cheeky chappie Mike and will never be forgotten and thanks to film you're immortalised Mike you will live on forever... you cheeky bugger... 👍❤ love ya mate
Thanks for posting, an under rated entertainer. Didn't know he was less keen on doing the blue material, he did it so well. Great gravelly cockney voice but his manager is summink else!
Was glued to runaround and thought Mike was fabulous as the host... ❤👍 If he was my teacher at school God would have been fantastic ❤👍 Would never have walk out the gates as often as I did
Legend isn't perhaps enough of a tribute for such a great character. I can't think of anything I didn't enjoy him in; including Runaround in my own youth. I haven't even watched Eastenders since he left either.
I grew up watching Runaround , brilliant programme . I remember thinking the prizes were amazingly good for a kids TV show . In retrospect as an adult , parent & grandparent myself , I can see that Mike Reid was the most wholesome presenter for that kind of show , a decent family man . Poor guy never enjoyed much of a retirement . Only the good die young as they say.
i was gobsmacked that mike sadly died he was a good actor and he was funny as well god rest his soul.as he used to say on tv in the late 70,s/80,s RUNAROUNDNOW.

Saw Mike in the Comedians in the London Palladium in the 60's We stayed in the then posh Strand Hotel and it was the first place as a youngster I saw electric shoe polishers near the Lifts and also automatic ice makers where you could take a wax paper cup and take ice cubes to your room what luxury :) He walked past us as we queued to go into the Theatre and said hello he was a tall imposing man. The show was fantastic
Got to know him as his character on eastenders on reruns here in the states. What an awesome actor he made you feel like you knew him all his life and in away reminded me a bit of my dad who was also named Frank. Love this video. R.I.P. my friend hope to run into you in heaven.

Good bloke. Saw him at Disneyworld in the early '90's "wotcha Frank" and his reply? "Alright my son" made this ex.pat's day. Bless him.
Mike Reid was a natural comedian. Great fun. The sort of laughs we need these days. Thank you 👍👍👍
