Thanks for posting this video. I picked up yesterday from the curb a different version of the Zeppelin (also 30 pin but looks different inside and the metal part on the back of yours is made of plastic on mine - probably an older model ?). Initially I thought it had a firmware issue and spent like an hour trying different things. After seeing your video I got some courage to open it up. Sure enough there were 3 bulged capacitors on the power board. Replaced them and it's working again !

Well done. Vince, when replacing capacitors in power supplies there is another parameter (apart from capacitance and ESR) that you need to consider: maximum ripple current. If you go back to RS Components and look at that Panasonic capacitor you showed on screen, and download its datasheet, and scroll down to the table on page 112 (actually page 2 of the pdf) you'll see that each cap has a specified max ripple current. Ideally the max ripple current of your replacement cap should be at least as high as that of the failed component. However, it may be hard to discover what that was! The actual ripple current in the cap may be about the same as the current draw from that supply line.

I've just picked one myself! You can buy bluetooth adaptors that will fit on the 30pin dock connector, for like 10 pounds on ebay - will let you use it like a modern BT speaker!
Just wanted to say I stumbled on your videos the other night and you've given me the confidence to fiddle with more gadgets and gizmos. Turns out when you're not afraid of voiding a warranty or making it look awful, most things can be fixed. You asked briefly if B&W were as good as Bang and Olufsen, and depending on how serious Bowers and Wilkins gets with their engineering, the answer is absolutely yes. Their biggest claim to fame is that their speakers have been used as monitors at Abbey Road studios for decades, and they have a huge semi-concept speaker that looks like a snail shell and sells for sports car money.
Never seen one of these speakers in my life. Just glimpsed one sitting proudly in my neighbours lounge and am now convinced you live on my street 😂😂😂 love your videos 👌🏻👏🏻
Also, for the fabric: grill cloth is a fairly complex polyester mesh weave and can't really be repaired when it tears. Luckily it's fairly cheap; just don't buy a width sight unseen without making sure it's large enough. FWIW tights fabric is knit, not woven, which is why it runs.
Ah the famous B&W Zeppelin ! It all brings me back to 2008 when I got a 2nd gen iPod Touch as a gift. The mirror finish on the back of the Zeppelin reminds me of this very iPod (That unfortunately ended up destroyed in a house fire along many other stuff). After that I got an iPhone, then other smartphones as time goes by, you know like everyone does nowadays... And I remember seeing the Zeppelin at the stores, even trying it with my iPod Touch. Back in its time it was clearly presented and thought of as "the poshest" iPod/iPhone speaker you could get, in fact it was THE most expensive one at the stores I got to.
Great video Vince! I have a Zeppelin too of which there is an issue with the WiFi module. I am sure that everything else is fine. Because I have another B&W with the same WiFi module. And if I swap the WiFi unit to the Zeppelin it works perfect.
Great fix, Vince! I've had one of these speakers since 2009-ish, but I haven't put sound through it in probably six or seven years. I agree with you though, the mid-range of these is a bit muddy, so the sound is fairly dull to my ears. But I still have it on display because it's so cool looking!
Nice fix, faulty part was proven faulty with testers, even it also looked bad, and only the falty part was replaced, and it fixed the device. I like that :)
Panasonic, Rubycon,Nichicon or Chemi-Con capacitors will be nice to have on hand. These are all top quality caps. There are a few other top quality ones too
I had one of these come in a few years ago. The power supply was different, more complex and fried so I bought a suitable replacement from RS-Components for about £25. Space was tight but it did fit. Job done.
Well done for saving this tech from the scrap heap. Remember seeing these in John Lewis for around £500. Loved the design and sound quality, but was way out of my price range.
I’ve went to school for four years to be an electrician and I’ve done many small appliance repairs, watching your videos makes me confident I can get into small electronics repairs a bit. I’m curious as to what brand your soldering equipment is?
I now have a nice Hakko FX-951 soldering iron and a QUICK 861DE hot Air station BUT before that I used a cheap generic Chinese 3 in 1 solder station for a few years 👍👍
Back 20+ years ago I bought a tool that would check most capacitors in circuit, did not work 100% of the time (because of other components) but on those I would take 1 leg out and re test. Saved me tons of time
Try LCR-T7 tester, which beside testing LCR, also tests Diodes, Zeners, Transistors, MOSFETs, JFETS, ESR. and thanks to Chinese it is cheap, like less than $30. i can’t speak to in-circuit testing, though. Like your previous experience, it should occasionally work.
You can’t rely on capacitance or ESR alone, I’ve had caps test ok that we’re still bad due to leakage when exposed to their working voltage… always just replace them all, I consider electrolytic caps to be consumables. Also don’t forget to replace the two big caps under that long sticker.
What a fix! An absolute bargain you have there. I remember seeing these at 400 and were fairly hardly regarded then. Amazing one cap can totally disable it.
Nice work. Quick tip for the desoldering gun - I've found the gun is far less likely to jam up if you hold the piece you're working on as close to vertical as you can. While the vacuum is pretty decent, keeping the piece horizontal means the gun is having to work against gravity to pull the solder up into the collector. Holding the piece vertically means you can hold the gun horizontally, giving the molten solder a much easier journey. Cleaning out solder stuck in those guns is no fun . . .
Reminds me of a CD player I had back in the day. Audio Innovations Alto. Would love to see one of those on the channel. And yes get rid of the dock on the other one. Be nice to see a bit of modding as well as repair.
Brilliant video, and after watching I bid for one on eBay. B&W make some excellent stuff. Now when I got it out of box all worked fine, then the RED flashing led,so as you deduced probably a capacitor. So thanks to you’re handy work I’ll follow in you footsteps and fix it👍 I’m going to do some tests to,as although there’s probably not enough doom inside,I did repair a JBL Xtrene speaker for a client which used a 7.3v 5000Ah battery inside, my thinking is to fit a port on back for DC to turn it into a portable speaker. Perhaps you might try that to ?? Keep up the good work, always interesting, and knowledgeable 👍👍👍
Was going to say recover the grills but many beat me to it. Use a pillow to support wobbly items during tear down to prevent accidents. And please do the echo mod to the other one.
I still rock my Zeppelin every day....and it is an old 30 pin. Added a new Bluetooth 5.0 adapter, awesome. Got mine for £70 'due to fault' about 9yrs ago on the Bay....turned out it just needed a reset. This Unit range was the What Hi-Fi Best winner for about 5yrs
rip the old material off and use some tights of your choice ;) then clamp them up around the edge with loads of spring clamps then add superglue it will seep through and stick it all down. Done it a few times and looks proper.
This was an awesome repair. I bought a small bluetooth receiver for my iPod Hi-Fi that connects to the 30-pin dock. I can stream music directly from my iPhone without having to worry about cables. It's called a "Andoer Bluetooth A2DP Music Audio 30 Pin Receiver" and was £7.99 on amazon.
Great video - I had this device and it went faulty, B&W replaced it out of warranty for the newer version (not for free, but at a decent discount) for the newer version that didn't have the dock. That also went faulty, and I was given a discount for their Formation Wedge. They are lovely speakers, good sound, but quite unreliable. Interesting to see the fault may have been a few dollar capacitor. The Wedge that I now still use has been performing reliably since I got it. Let's see if reliability has increased over the years :-)
I fixed one a while ago, it was also a bad capacitor. You can remove the docking part, it looks better in my opinion. I added a little bluetooth board to mine (cheap from aliexpress), built inside, and it works great. Just connect it to AUX port pins on the board and take 5V from somewhere. You need to modify AUX port itself because there is detection if a cable is plugged in, this way it will go directly to AUX when it's turned on. Great sounding speaker, one of the best docking speakers ever built, they just don't do quality stuff these days.
I really hate this "they just don't do quality stuff these days" thing. Those speakers were 600 Euros 13 years ago. If you're willing to shell out that kind of money you can also get that kind of quality today. Most people just aren't willing to do that.
@@MyRegardsToTheDodo I agree with you, for the right amount of money you can get quality. But in this class of speakers there is not much incentive for manufacturers to put quality components in, not many people willing to spend more than equivalent JBL for example. No one will put that large cast metal back, large air core inductors for crossover, because it costs money. Even in B&W next model of zeppelin you can notice some cost saving measures, doing digital signal processing, cheaper drivers, etc. There are better sounding speakers in this class today, for less money, but thanks to DSP and other stuff. Zeppelin was from different era when quality of internal components was most important. This is just my opinion.
i use a gen 1 zepplin with a 1080p projector for watching films in the bedroom....truely epic sound...best speakerive bought since my canon alien head ones i own
The massive inductors (0.7 milliHenry) are crossovers for the speakers. Most decent speakers have them. They split off the output of the amp into lower and higher frequencies, to feed to the woofer, midrange, and tweeter. They're usually entirely passive circuits, no transistors or power supply, and are built into the speaker box itself, where it's a standard stereo with separate speakers. You can also get active crossovers. These are powered, and split off the frequencies *before* the power amp. Then you'd have an entire separate amplifier for each tweeter, each woofer, etc, linked directly to their relevant speakers. I'm surprised that isn't the way it was done in this thingy, especially since you could do the crossovering in software on the CPU that's in there, assuming a decent CPU.
remember seeing these for sale in the HMV shop in Canary Wharf, they had it against the wall playing…. Was a party piece in itself,,, and thumping bass a plenty,,, know it was mega expensive, way out of my wage bracket, you’re a clever lucky fella Vince….what a result !!!!!!!
A couple of weeks ago i fixed a dvd/vhs combo for a friend, same thing,it was 5 capacitors i had to change, that was the only problem ! 1 was leaking, the other 4 were bulged like what you had here !
Great video and nice fix. I'd love to see you converting the second one to an echo dot or something. I think it would look better without that outdated iPod holder anyway.

I had some nice stand alone speakers , and they have similar ,driver boards Makes sense too , seen as all the wadding ,to dampen , vibration , even on wire, harnesses !! Looks well quality made !!
Thanks for the video. My zeppelin has been sat faulty (flashing red light) for a couple of years, think it’s time I take it apart and see if it is suffering from the same capacitor fault. I’m not confident enough to carry out the replacement myself, thinking a local electric repair shop might take on this job if I supply them just the board.
Excellent video. Love your enthusiasm. Well done on the repair. Can I have the other one please :) Actually I just found a complete intact one on ebay with stand and the same fault. Just bought it. Looking forward to see if the capacitors need replacing to cure. Keep up the good work and inspiring us

In the near future I'm going to replace the rest of the caps. I will not be using the iPhone Arm/Cradle so if you want it for your other Zeppy let me know, its yours :)

I have gone and done it. As the 1st Zeppy is now working a treat I bought another in a slightly worse state with a solid red light error, not flashing. Going to see if I can fix this. I am also modding the grilles as the cloth on these was horrid. I will be probing the voltages to see if I can insert a 3rd gen echo dot or a chromecast as I use Qobuz. Fun fun fun :)

The two units up top are crossover for the speaker’s frequency for woofer, midrange, tweeters and so on nice simple repair 😊
ANOTHER fine repair you've done!
Thanks JSV, I love it when the testers confirm a fault rather than guessing and assuming 👍👍👍
Picked up one of these at a boot sale for a fiver . Worth the money
The crashing sound at 16:30 absolutely made my day😂😂
I would like to see you putting the Echo Dot in the second one. It's probably easy to find a 5v rail inside, since it already charges the ipod
Panasonic, Rubycon,Nichicon or Chemi-Con capacitors will be nice to have on hand. These are all top quality caps. There are a few other top quality ones too
Long live the blue mat! Nice video Vince.
Got to love it when something like that is such an easy fix 🙌🏻
I had one of these come in a few years ago. The power supply was different, more complex and fried so I bought a suitable replacement from RS-Components for about £25. Space was tight but it did fit. Job done.
Listening to this via my B&W 607 speakers. Low end B&W but better than PC speakers :)
A nice set of speakers there and a nice and easy fix i do appreciate all the hard work and dedication Vince keep up the good work.
Yes, put an echo dot in, it’s the sort of thing I would do, great video, Vince.
I have a peak ESR meter and it’s spot on all the time
Excellent repair- what got me was “ keep it somewhere safe” *breaks glass in the background 😂
What a big speaker. Straight forward fix.
Great fix! I have one of these, it has a beautiful sound and I do like the design as well. Should it ever break, I'll now know how to fix it, cheers!
I can’t believe it!😂 Literally less than 24 hours after posting my comment, I received a faulty Zeppelin😅
Great video Vince, I've been thinking about getting one of these to show off my iPod collection. Now I might get a broken one
Thanks Peter, fingers crossed you'll find one with the same issue 👍👍👍
You can’t rely on capacitance or ESR alone, I’ve had caps test ok that we’re still bad due to leakage when exposed to their working voltage… always just replace them all, I consider electrolytic caps to be consumables. Also don’t forget to replace the two big caps under that long sticker.
What a fix! An absolute bargain you have there. I remember seeing these at 400 and were fairly hardly regarded then. Amazing one cap can totally disable it.
Thanks Paul, yes the video I seen was £400 or €600 back in the 2008. Well worth the £25 for a faulty one 👍
The cotton is stuffed into any gaps to absorb vibration to prevent the build-up of harmonics in the sound which might produce buzz.
Nice fix. Sounds nice coming through my Bose sound bar.
Cleaning out solder stuck in those guns is no fun . . .
That makes sense, cheers Neil 👌
@@Mymatevince Not so good for the camera though.
Incidentally, Could the iPod dock be taken off and it'll still work without modding?
You can’t say B&O in the same breath as Bowers & Wilkins . B&W is far superior 😮
Wow even as a speaker alone it's amazing, and with your knowledge it's an astounding bargain.
Always fancied one of these Vince
Enjoyable video from start to end 👍
Reminds me of a CD player I had back in the day. Audio Innovations Alto. Would love to see one of those on the channel. And yes get rid of the dock on the other one. Be nice to see a bit of modding as well as repair.
Brilliant video, and after watching I bid for one on eBay. B&W make some excellent stuff.
Now when I got it out of box all worked fine, then the RED flashing led,so as you deduced probably a capacitor. So thanks to you’re handy work I’ll follow in you footsteps and fix it👍
I’m going to do some tests to,as although there’s probably not enough doom inside,I did repair a JBL Xtrene speaker for a client which used a 7.3v 5000Ah battery inside, my thinking is to fit a port on back for DC to turn it into a portable speaker. Perhaps you might try that to ??
Keep up the good work, always interesting, and knowledgeable
👍👍👍
Was going to say recover the grills but many beat me to it.
Use a pillow to support wobbly items during tear down to prevent accidents. And please do the echo mod to the other one.
I still rock my Zeppelin every day....and it is an old 30 pin. Added a new Bluetooth 5.0 adapter, awesome. Got mine for £70 'due to fault' about 9yrs ago on the Bay....turned out it just needed a reset. This Unit range was the What Hi-Fi Best winner for about 5yrs
Excellent 👍👍👍
Hi, could you elaborate which Zeppelin you have and how you resetted it? Thanks in advance
rip the old material off and use some tights of your choice ;) then clamp them up around the edge with loads of spring clamps then add superglue it will seep through and stick it all down.
Let's see if reliability has increased over the years :-)
I had my first B&W speakers in the early seventies. They are one of the best manufacturers in the world .😅
The sound quality is very amazing 👏 👌
AMAZING video Vince..... Would LOVE to see the EcoDot build! Thanks for everything you do.
Thanks Daniel 👌
Bowers & Wilkins is a factory upgrade in my top end jag xfs 9 speakers its loud and clear
Yes echo dot it please ..would love to see an update conversation to it 👍 really enjoyed this one too
I never knew that bowers and Wilkins were b&w ! I’ve got two bookshelf type speaks for my denon system and they still sound great
I fixed one a while ago, it was also a bad capacitor.
@@MyRegardsToTheDodo Very well said. You always have and always will be able to buy quality.
This is just my opinion.
i use a gen 1 zepplin with a 1080p projector for watching films in the bedroom....truely epic sound...best speakerive bought since my canon alien head ones i own
nice! I revived an old Bose Ipod/Iphone dock speaker by installing a cheap bluetooth module (plugs right into the "30pin" connector)
So, it's a zeppelin, and it's heavy. Now you know exactly what you're supposed to play on it. Here's a hint... it's lead.
Haha, it has already played Stairway to Heaven, it was one of the first songs played on it. Must have been a subconscious thing 😂
Awful patter…… fair enough though
@@AcornElectron C'mon, that was *GREAT* banter. A-ha!
Led
That’s right, ABBA! Gay Rights!
remember seeing these for sale in the HMV shop in Canary Wharf, they had it against the wall playing…. Was a party piece in itself,,, and thumping bass a plenty,,, know it was mega expensive, way out of my wage bracket, you’re a clever lucky fella Vince….what a result !!!!!!!
Thanks Russ, pricey back then but very reasonable now even for a working one👍👍👍
A couple of weeks ago i fixed a dvd/vhs combo for a friend, same thing,it was 5 capacitors i had to change, that was the only problem ! 1 was leaking, the other 4 were bulged like what you had here !
Well done Mike 👌
@@Mymatevince Cheers fella,us right to repair guys have to stick together !
Great video and nice fix. I'd love to see you converting the second one to an echo dot or something. I think it would look better without that outdated iPod holder anyway.
Yes echo dot in the other would be awesome !! Or the Bluetooth brings it up to today specs also!
Hey up vince ,just seen this , those circuit boards with coils on , are driver boards for speakers ,I believe ..
I had some nice stand alone speakers , and they have similar ,driver boards
Makes sense too , seen as all the wadding ,to dampen , vibration , even on wire, harnesses !!
Excellent work Vince
Thank you Number Six 👌👍👍👍
@@Mymatevince 👋🤚 Be seeing you
Most Xellent my friend. Superb descriptive and visual work. Many Thanx.
B&w are a great brand had a set for 20 years and they still look the part today
The pipes are the reflex ports for each speaker to increase the output of the bass.
Love the design i have seen these on the internet
Excellent video. Love your enthusiasm. Well done on the repair. Can I have the other one please :) Actually I just found a complete intact one on ebay with stand and the same fault. Just bought it. Looking forward to see if the capacitors need replacing to cure. Keep up the good work and inspiring us
Hi Vince. Just an update from me. For the princely sum of 3.35 for x10 Nichicon 2200uf 16v Caps off ebay, I now have a fully working B&W Zeppy! Many thanks again for the video. In the near future I'm going to replace the rest of the caps. I will not be using the iPhone Arm/Cradle so if you want it for your other Zeppy let me know, its yours :)
After digging around the web for a few hours I found who makes the PSU's in these cdn-docs.av-iq.com/dataSheet/Abletec_produktark_ALP0050-series.pdf Also here are the specs for the required Rubycon Caps. Rubycon ZLH 2200 uF 16v
Rubycon XYG 470 uF 16v
Rubycon ZLH 220 uF 35v
Rubycon ZL 1000 uF 35v
I have gone and done it. As the 1st Zeppy is now working a treat I bought another in a slightly worse state with a solid red light error, not flashing. Going to see if I can fix this. I am also modding the grilles as the cloth on these was horrid. I will be probing the voltages to see if I can insert a 3rd gen echo dot or a chromecast as I use Qobuz. Fun fun fun :)
Great Job Vince! I could see the bulging cap around the 12 min mark! It's a common failure on switch mode power supplies especially in TV's. Great repair, and well executed as always :)
Thank you. I've mentioned you in a couple of upcoming videos. Once in a really rare Omega watch video and another in a (you guessed it)...A Dyson fan 😂👌
@@Mymatevince Oh brilliant! Really appreciate that. I just had a good boost of subscribers as my video on reverse engineering the solar inverter password got published on a site called hackaday. You may find it interesting if you haven't seen it. I Really appreciate that Vince. You are a true gentleman! If there's anything I can do for you in the future let me know!
@@BuyitFixit No worries, I just released the Omega watch to my Patrons so it will be on RUclips next weekend. The Dyson fan will probably be live in a few weeks. I haven't seen the solar video yet, I tend to binge watch ever few weeks so I will be sure to catch up with it then. Sorry I never caught your name so apologies just calling you Buy it Fix it 👍👍
@@Mymatevince No problem Vince. It's Mick :)
@@BuyitFixit Cheers Mick 👍👍
The big coils are crossovers vince.
That is a very very well made speaker.
