What’s odd to me is how they show Carrie handling Big’s death. She’s so cool about it. I mean she was more devastated when he left her at the altar in film 1. She was literally depressed when he didn’t wanna marry her. But now that he’s dead she’s like …. “yup, that’s life”. No sense at all. 😅

    • @tamarajay7676
      @tamarajay7676 2 года назад +40

If you listen to Kim's reason, she said she doesn't know what story she could tell now. Meaning the stories they gave her weren't appealing to her or worth her telling. She's also outgrown the role has an artist and wants projects she's passionately about. Maybe if they wrote her a good story she would've returned. Of course there is beef between SJP and Kim but only they know what that's about. I think what happened between them probably keeps Kim away. When Kim was refusing to return I think SJP didn't handle that well n perhaps said some words to kim. At the end of the day... still sucks not having Kim there, she's a huge part of the show. SBj also is acting like Kim isn't that big part of the show in interviews. Samantha was the shit starter who made all the other girls more interesting too. I completely agree with this review.
Forced woke culture instead of a natural storytelling. Its new york how hard can it be to integrate that culture into the show. The original show wasn't perfect but it seemed braver than this political correct BS. Its better to tell stories that are honest to push the limits but they're playing it safe a fitting in to a box. Its surprising to me that they took this long to get a more diverse cast. Anyways im sure the show will be okay like the films. The original was the best.

I don't know, that didn't seem like just a normal outburst for Miranda. I strongly think they're setting up an alcohol problem storyline for her because if you remember on the morning of her first day at Columbia, she stopped by a bar before it was even opened, and at Big's funeral she rushed the bartender to pour her a drink before the service started (and it was during the funeral scene when she raged at Che and her son).

If any character should have been made into a "Karen" it should be Charlotte. Miranda has always been the sharpest and feet grounded. Miranda was willing to move to Brooklyn living there for 20 yrs and never met a black person???. Charlotte would say( nodding with her eyes very big) "Well with all the unrest on the Upper East Side, I signed up for a workshop on Critical Race Theory." " You know during my time at Vasser this was never something we even thought about, and I don't want to look like one of those.. you know, what are the kids calling them? "Karens." Said in that goofy yet lovable Charlotte way. And Miranda and Carrie would side-eye her for being so ridiculous and that would be the joke. Miranda's way of ( you are clueless, and out of touch but I still love you) Then you would hear the voice-over of Carrie.." As Charlotte went off to her workshop on CRT, Miranda blah blah blah" I can see/picture/hear it in my head.

You are 100% right. It's like they're trying to ruin the whole show. I don't believe the whole Miranda storyline. No woman that is a highly educated attorney in New York would act so backward about a black woman professor. There are a lot of black women professors and professionals. It's not uncommon or surprising. They try to add some memories of the past series. But, that just shows how this one is really awful. It seems like the other actresses really don't have much going on acting wise outside of this series. Kim Cattrell really wants to do other acting and be done with SATC. She was so smart to move on and avoid this whole trainwreck.

It seems like the real life characters have taken over the actors...I felt that some of the main characters are not happy people...they are rigid and a little aggressive.
Carrie is more SJP than Carrie Bradshaw...Miranda is more Cynthia Nixon than the Miranda from original series.
We expected to see a well acted television show instead got a strange sense of reality.
I am 55 and often feel like I am in a similar time warp, why? Due to unexpected circumstances, I moved away from the USA to another country 21 years ago so it's very natural to feel things have changed when I go back...not about the pandemic because actually that's the only thing that everyone can relate to no matter where in the world we have been these last 2 years.
I am surprised with the first 2 episodes but will keep watching out of curiosity more so than anything else.
...at 55 the ladies have conformed to societal norms from the 80/90s and surrounded by a new age of our modern life pace with all its nuances of change.
Maybe the characters are trying to show us all the things they have adapted to so we can understand where they are now.
I don't know...but everything changes and life is about adapting.
I can't help but wonder why couldn't they give us a little more of their younger selves?
      In future episodes,
I hope their inner child is allowed to come out and play just a little.
      I don't know, but don't

Instead of killing Big they should have killed this whole idea - they didn't carry it - the plot collapsed into old women trying to be young instead of giving dignity to aging gracefully. Watched both episodes Thurs at noon (huge mistake!) and was totally unprepared and am still absolutely devastated. I ugly-cried through the whole thing. I'm 56 and a widow so I've been Carrie on the couch and I've had my "ride or die" sleeping with me and everything else they're doing with that - but, I will never get over Big dying! I was pissed, too! UGH. Anyway, I could talk about that for hours. Obviously, they are going to reveal Miranda's problem with alcohol, but the awkward foot-in-mouth-thing like she doesn't know what to say is ridiculous. She's the most educated and professional of the women and they're making her out to be an idiot. Hate that. Charlotte is the one most likely to be politically incorrect- I don't get it. The thing with Miranda and Che is probably a lead-in to a future love affair between them. Cynthia Nixon is a lesbian in real life...so, that would be my guess. HATE the Brady crap. Enough. Totally with you - I don't want to see him having sex or hear about his semen. WhyTF is his girlfriend spending the night with him anyway at 17? Ridiculous. So, when did Stanford become the little bitch and Anthony become the sweet one? He was SO rude to Big's secretary -making someone move would've been an Anthony thing. Charlotte is still Charlotte (I adore Harry, too!) -and I love Kristin Davis, but, she needs to back off the fillers and the botox. She doesn't need it, she's precious, and it is distracting. It affects her speech and makes her crying even more annoying to watch. Whew....rant over.

Carrie is even more unlikeable starting with the brunch scene, just rude and short with her friends like she was in the 2nd movie. She just became angry, inpatient, bitter as she got older. Miranda was always my favorite and they've turned her into this idiot who can't keep her mouth shut. I find it hard to believe that Miranda would be ok with her teenage son's gf staying over every night and having loud sex right next door to them. I can’t imagine a more poorly done reboot of an original series that touched so many hearts.
So for six grueling cycles, fans of the original series are told that these girls are all looking for pure, can’t live without love.
So I wonder . . . why then for the past three attempts - the two movies, and now this horrible reboot, have they been trying to eliminate Big and now literally KILL him off the show?
I don’t follow what this show was trying to be AT ALL.
And handling Samantha’s absence seemed mean, petty and selfish on Parker’s part … “she fired me as a friend.” Please.
So now we don’t have probably the two best characters on the show, Big and Samantha.
Then, all of the politics, wokeism, and clear ‘demographic box checking’ made for complete palate disgust - with no comedy, and frankly dark and depressing times.
Then, the handling of men seemed like a mockery. Steve’s hearing loss. Harry touching the walls. The men are portrayed as silly add ons when again, they all served as rocks in the girls’ lives previously.
Brady having sex as a minor next to his parents’ bedroom? I don’t know … is the show touting sex among minors? Again, just a strange, what is the message here?
So with all of the new found messages, what the show clearly lost was its original comedy, emotion, and love.
And just like that, it’s a no for me.

What’s missing here is Carrie’s voice over. Typically the voice overs would ‘explain’ the awkward moments and provide a bit of comic relief. The show has always been full of random happenings - but without the voice overs - it leaves us to create our own commentary in our heads. I think a lot of the awkward moments are hilarious because that’s what life is full of.. awkward interactions and if you know the characters.. their body language, the looks on their face, says it all. And as far as Miranda.. her intro to her class was definitely UNBEARABLE but that type of stuff happens and is an awesome opportunity to talk about issues like that. And, I would say though - it was awesome seeing all the characters.. I grew up with these characters and I really enjoyed watching them grow up so to speak. It was hilarious to me that Steve is going deaf. I love charlottes little family dynamic - LILLY IS A POWERHOUSE and I love how the other daughter is so the opposite of charlotte.. I mean, I felt like I had a family reunion and was able to catch up on their lives. Although it has some cringe moments .. don’t think the show would be right without them. It’s just who they are.. but I will say this - SAMANTHA JONES CHARACTER IS VERY MUCH MISSED .. we need her practical viewpoint to get out of some of the hard core emotional scenes that Carrie is known for. Sam was the one that pulled us all out of that funk 😩🙏🏽 good news is there are more shows to go and the first one is always a little rocky. I’ve got faith in this project and I hope it does great!

Sam was also the sex in Sex and the City title. But since the 2 films and now JLT, it turned out in a flat, lazy drama with not much point about anything really. Of course it wouldn't work. So …I could see that death coming from the ‘get go’…of course. And was annoyed already but then thought, ok….let’s see if SJP can give us some good acting in the death scene. All I did was feel agitation that it took her so long to rush to him on the floor. I’d have been running while dialing 911 and getting in position to do CPR. I felt nothing about the death…just at the bad scene direction and acting. If we have to see death , at least pull my heart strings. 🤷🏻‍♀️. Agree with others though….now what, we have to see grieving for the next episodes ? Just what I wanted in my fashion filled , fun show. 😖. Stupid, and tone deaf and a disappointment. • @cv8499
      @cv8499 2 года назад +11

YES! That's what annoyed me about that scene. Big was clearly still alive, and she didn't even try to call for an ambulance! She just started mourning him like he was already dead. It would have been better if she called for help first, then went to him, telling him to hold on, help was coming, but he tells her they won't get there in time. Carrie screams at him that if he loves her, he'll hold on, asking him, "You love me, right?" to which he answers, "Abso-fucking-lutely"--and then dies in her arms.
And that eulogy was awful too! It sounded like it was about somebody they barely knew. Carrie should have delivered it, and it should have been way more personal. Hell, Carrie was more poetic about him when he was just moving out of NY. ("You can't leave NY. You're the Chrysler Building!") But for his eulogy we get "How very, very sad and how lucky"? How disappointing. Also, that austere chic funeral? Not at all Big's style.

Honestly it does feel like a big downer so far and the parts that aren’t downers just feel awkward and weird. Between Miranda having a drinking problem, Samantha not being friends with the girls anymore, Steve having a hearing problem, us seeing Brady have loud sex next to his parents room, Charlotte putting Miranda on the spot about having grey hair, and Stanford and Anthony fighting, there’s just been so many uncomfortable weird moments. The original SATC had real life moments but was also fun, upbeat, funny and had an element of escapism, this just feels heavy and totally off from what I would imagine- yes the characters are older, but nothing feels bright and exuberant like their personalities usually are… also to open with a main characters death and funeral? Unusual choice. I feel like it would have been a better decision to limit the heaviness- still have it, it’s real life- but my god, to pick up after “all the time” with such dull depressing mundane situations? Very off brand.

Being a dedicated fan back in the day of SATC I was full of anticipation for AJLT. Watching the first 2 chapters I knew this series was doomed from the start when in the first chapter the subject of "where is Samantha" was brought up several times. It reduces the original characters to a baffled trio trying to negotiate a strange new world, as if the only thing ageing has to offer us or women at least is confusion and failure. One would assume that mature women would have left their ditzy girlie days behind but not SJP. At 56 she is the queen of ditzy older but not wiser. Costume design duo Molly Rogers and Danny Santiago only makes matters worse and makes me yearn for the talent of costume guru Patricia Field who was the mastermind for SATC.

YES! Your review is very valid. 💖 I was also a huge fan of the series growing up with these ladies was a moment for alot of us women...the movies were bad though and so far this series is cringey. The forced wokeness (as you said) in this series is for the birds 🙄and Miranda is acting like a crotchety old lady. Why?? I sense she might come out in the show (maybe mirroring her real life) and lighten up more...??? I hope she does something different IMMEDIATELY cuz she is a bore and so unconfident. Unlike how she originally was. And Steve w the hearing aids? Is he 90? 50-60 is not old & decrepit. I also do not want any forced agenda pushed on me either re: the podcast scene dialogue. I am a woman and am comfortable with my title. I am not a cis...whatever the new term is...the podcast character is annoying AF. One light point - I absolutely love Nicole Ari Parker; I think she will bring some freshness & newer designer fashion which is MUCH needed!!!!!!! I hope this series finds it's flow. I truly do. So far a let down...Don't even get me started on BIG's death...😳WTF. Maybe that is also why Kim Cattrall did not want to be involved (apart from her drama w SJP) she must be happy with her decision.

It was getting on my nerves how Charlotte kept blaming herself for Big’s death. She found a way to make that situation about her. Big had a heart attack. He wasn’t shot or hit with something. My point in saying that is whether Carrie was there on not, he still would had a heart attack….on the way to the Hampton’s or even at the Hampton’s. Her presence would not have avoided that. Charlotte is old enough to understand that. I’m sorry but that really irked me.

I really enjoyed your review, even though i really didn’t feel the same way. I keep hearing (some) people, as you did, refer to “forced wokeness”. I don’t really see it that way at all. First, this show is set in NYC, primarily Manhattan, among upper income Manhattanites. Given this fact, it would be nearly impossible to ignore the current political climate, there in particular, and be true to the way this show has always accurately depicted many aspects of city life. So, having that understanding I kind of like how they’re showing that, just like many of us, even the most politically progressive of all the women, Miranda, is finding it super frustrating to navigate this woke climate. To me that is the opposite of pushing wokeness. Its acknowledging how frustrating and difficult the current environment is for almost everyone. I have some complaints too, but look, i love these characters and I’m just happy to see them. As a gay man, I’ve spent many many moons in the streets of New York City & the show seems to be very accurately representing 2021 top 1% NYC, including the differing parenting styles of teens with parents like progressive Miranda and more conservative Charlotte. There are parents like Miranda who allow their child to have sex under their roof, vs. more conservative parents like Charlotte, who try to control even their teenage daughters style of dress. They were both sort of repping the more extreme fringe of either parenting type, but I thought it was an interesting juxtaposition of those parenting choices, just as seeing these 55 year old ladies navigate a very sensitive younger & more “woke” than ever New York city, and finding their place in all of that. I like it and i think its going to get better. I get it, how you feel, sometimes i watch something and feel the need to complain too. In fact, i not only miss the way the show was in the 90s, i MISS the 90s. Things were a lot less crazy, in many ways. The show seems to reflect pretty accurately, that change, without choosing to push any super extreme agenda that i could see. I mean its always going to be left leaning. I just want to encourage you to watch it again when you’re in a good mood. Its not perfect but I really feel strongly that it wasn’t nearly as bad as you make it sound. Did you watch the rest of the season “preview” that plays at the end of the episode 2 credits? If not I suggest you do. It looks like the show will gain comedic momentum and stride, based on those clips.

I think what you see as forced wokeness is simply bad writing. An all white show like SatC can have diverse characters, but it seems contrive and simply forced when it's simply a tool for some kind of street cred that the show does not earn in any way. For example, Brady's gf appears to be Lantinx, but she never speaks. She's simply a female body Brady uses, and Miranda finds annoying. Other than that, she might as well be a blow up doll. I also think Miranda was not just out of character but unrealistic, as her interactions with POC seemed more like she spent 30y being a lawyer in North Dakota, not NYC.

I feel the same way about this new version of my favorite series of all time. The ultra wokeness is unnecessary. Although diversity was missing, they didn’t have to make it look so forced. I can do without the Che character or however you spell her name. Carrie was my original favorite character but through the years Miranda became my favorite n most relatable one. But here in this new version of the series, she’s the complete opposite of what made me fall in love with Miranda’s character. Its cringe listening to her ughhh. They’re also making people in their 50s look like 80 yr old senior citizens. Steve losing his hearing? Really 🤔 Wtf is that all about! Brady is still a minor n is allowed to have sleep overs with his gf n having crazy loud sex but Miranda was appalled bc he was puffing marijuana 😏 Make it make sense 🤦‍♀️ Didn’t like how they made Stanford so bitchy n Anthony the calm rational one. It was sad to see big die but after I found out Chris Noth only agreed to return for one episode, I understand why n can be at peace with that. Carrie was being her selfish self as usual so no surprise there. As well as Charlotte being the cryer she’s always been so no surprise there either. I can appreciate that Samantha was mentioned although it seemed a bit shady how they portrayed her as the uncaring friend when she was the most caring out of all the friends in the original series. I’m going to give this show another shot before I decide if its worth watching. But so far, not impressed.

@@RM-ld4mo Samantha not showing up for the funeral stuck out like a sore thumb. It's an insult to the fans who KNOW that character inside and out, to think they'd ever believe Samantha would act like that.
What's also an insult to the loyal fans and a big F YOU,is that they killed Big. Fans invested 6+yrs into Carrie & Big's rollercoaster relationship.
I really think they should have let things be.
Kim Cattrall was smart to skip this dumpster fire. I can see why she said no to the third movie too, as it's obvious they used a lot of material from the never-made movie in the first episodes.

I don't know. I watched the first two episodes and it seems like SJP has too much control over creative. The series seemed cringy and cheap compared to the original. I mean come on:
    - Charlotte genuinely seems like a 2D stand-in for herself. You would off thought she would have become more mature and wise with age. You would think that her interactions with her kids would on their own show that. They could have done so much with her (show her returning to her career in art or teaching it - fighting ageism after the years), being a strong mom supporting her kids and directing them through life. They could set up for a strong family atmosphere sort-of old sitcoms style. Instead, we see Charlotte more confused and plain childish as ever. I get the musical recital, but her contact with Rose and Lily was cringy at best. Making a fuss over dresses and going with the "moms don't understand young people trope"? Seriously?
    - Miranda doesn't seem like the person to leave a perfectly fine career to just go and study in her fifties. If anything, they could have used Charlotte to show the difficulties of returning to college and starting a new career. Miranda could have been used as an inspiration. She could have started her own law firm and shown the difficulties of running a business as a mother in a competitive environment. They could have made a great scene where an intern saves or is right on one of her cases, showing older generations are not always right.
    - The Carrie storyline seems to make the most sense, but it has its own SJP/Carrie cringyness about it. Maybe it's early in the series, but you would have expected more from this grand love story it was supposed to be for six seasons and two films. Instead, it almost lacked a scene where Carrie remarks on who will pay off her credit cards now. I was literally waiting for it in episode 2. They could have done more to this story or if Noth didn't want to play as much in the series, then they could've at least handled it better.
    - The whole diversification of the show is of poor quality. I mean when Cher introduces herself with a list, it really feels like it has been written by someone badly out of touch. It was a bit stereotypical about Millennials or Gen-Zs, it would have been more interesting to see a discussion around sex, where both generations stated their views on issues like how sex and sexuality have become more public, the existence of revenge porn, nude photos, informed consent and so on. Big masturbating was supposed to be sexy? I guess it could be, but not necessarily for the viewers, and especially in that setting.
    - Additionally, if they wanted to seem more inclusive. Maybe have Brady date an Afro-American woman from school? Or Lily be a lesbian? Show that these are real scenarios in real families. Show friends and coworkers that are of different races, genders, or sexualities. Just the possible scenario I mentioned with Miranda. Why couldn't a black female intern at her company, tell Miranda some important information that changed or should have changed the outcome of her trial. That character could have been later introduced to Charlotte and Carrie at some point and they could have become friends. Hell, we could have even learned that the intern has to look after a younger brother or has a young son of her own and have her bond with Charlotte over being a mom. Or have lost her mother to the pandemic and bond with Carrie over a sense of loss.
    - Even with Samantha. If they knew Kim wasn't returning then I think it would've been better off to kill the character with Covid or breast cancer, than the whole "bad friend" storyline. It doesn't fit the character, she was a strong, independent woman who valued friendship like no one else. Or if they are hoping Kim will change her mind, then why not say that Samantha got a better job and is traveling/promoting a new hotel brand around the world. Make it seem like she is too busy to be in New York with them at this time.
There was so much potential but it was wasted. It seemed like one person in the team writing the script knew what they were doing and three who just wanted to sound hip. No personal hate towards you SJP, but please stay out of the creative. The show seemed very Carrie-centric, while there were plenty of opportunities to make something more of it.
I adored SATC as a teenager; it was my first introduction to the topic of sex and adult life. But this really doesn't compare to it, even Younger did a better job.

Miranda is now an insecure babbling fool with a drinking problem? Come on. Carrie being mean to Charlotte and wanting to get rid of her because she’s too emotional? I’ve only watched the first episode so far. So, this is my initial impression. First episode was a COMPLETE disappointment. If we look at the track record of the show. The storyline seems to be getting worse and worse. As the 2nd movie was trash. Perhaps the spark just isn’t there anymore. I love the original show. I do feel like it holds up today. They were fun and an escape. Like a night out with girls. That I enjoyed. This new chapter, robs the characters of their dignity by stating the obvious over and over again. I couldn’t help but wonder…what message are you trying to give about age? How they did Steve. Like really? He’s not even that old! Any current topics of the times they tripped over. It was awful! I also felt like they had the women do things that were out of character. Things Samantha would have done. Her absence is blaring. She was the comedy, the voice, and the most interesting. Without her…are they just old hags? Thats what the writers seem to think.

First of all, instead of being annoyed, he should be grateful that so many people embraced a character he played. He should take it as a compliment to his acting that the public has such affection for a character he brought to life on screen. It's very difficult in Hollywood to make it and/or do something that leaves such a lasting impression on the viewing audience.

I could go re-watch the old show and go into a safe happy place in a world where things aren’t so great right now. In one episode, HBO managed to not just kill a beloved character but to ruin the rest of the show because now it will be in my head that he dies in this stupid unspeakable way that makes no sense. Is it just me or why did she wait like five minutes and not call 911. I would do more for my dog. Anyway, if HBO thinks that iTunes in to watch death and destruction and sadness mixed in with fake wokeNess and Out of place weird inclusivity nods that make no sense in the show, HBO is sadly mistaken.
