I Bought And Restored An ABANDONED Porsche 911 In 4 Days!!

- I went and scooped up a 1999 Porsche 911 C2 that had been sitting in a Brooklyn Parking garage for 2 years for $5000 bucks! I spent the better part of a week completely reviving this 996 and turning it into a killer street ride that works as good as factory!

Ballsy move buying a 911 with a broken gearbox, but it looks like you got a bargain. Loving the channel so far.
Easy swap when you have a lift and $1500 is pretty reasonable.
these cars are shooting up in price .. was a no brainer buy when he got it
You could have said the same thing 10 years ago & it still would have been a killer deal. Especially for someone clearly capable enough to fix & enjoy it. Nothing ballsy at all.
Tony's enthusiasm for this car is like a happy little kid ... it's infectious & inspirational! The filming reminds me of home movies with Dad :D It's great.
no fancy video tricks, just straight footage of what is really going on. plus 30 minutes of content. love it!
This is a really cool way to start the channel. If you ever need parts for a german car, I'd recommend fcp euro, I've had good experiences with pelican parts too but I personally prefer fcp and I'd strongly recommend them. Keep up the great work on your channel and I'm excited to see what you do next.
Have always liked the 911 as well, but have settled for several poor man 944s
Would be pretty cool to see a VGG video on some of the European stuff!
I can imagine the hilarity of Derek's commentary as he works on a Poorsha.
Yeah man i'd like to see ya get a hold of a naturally weight reduced Porsche and scooch er down 996.911 miles LOL.
you owe it to yourself to find a ratty as hell 911 and resurrect it Derek....or stop being so g/d cheap and buy a decent one, you've got the dough so stop pretending you dont,lol...
Do you like them because they are only 9.11% reliable?
Great video. I love seeing the little fixes process. Nothing was more rewarding for me than when I replaced the rear hatch/ front hood struts for my IROC Z. They were super cheap too like $10 each.X3 and work incredibly well now, going on 3 years.
Hey Tony, if you ever need stuff 3D printed (I have plastic and resin printers), I'm on the other side of King of Prussia from you it sounds like. I'm a mechanical engineer and could occasionally have some free time to design stuff pro-bono to support the channel. Looking forward to see your future projects!
Very cool, I appreciate it! Planning on getting a basic printer this year and start messing around, maybe you can give some pointers! -TA
@@StayTunedTA For sure man, I'd recommenced getting a Prusa MK3S as your first printer, kits are $750. it's more expensive than the Ender 3 (usually the recommended budget printer), but it'll save you so much time and headaches from the inevitable troubleshooting you'd have to do.
My dude. I'm stoked for this. Want to see you 🚀. Also this is scratching my itch while OG motortrend is on hiatus.
You need audio. shotgun mic on the camera or a lav mic. Literally $20 on Amazon, it'll record to your phone. sync it in post and we'll be able to hear you in the car.
wireless lav.
Tony knows the formula for RUclips success
Repairing a supercar.
Got to normalize the audio post production, on good surround speakers the wind noise and wine from the tig is much louder than you talking. Though the tig welding sounded like it was in my house.
Thanks you for saying this. Haha. Watching it on a television, I’m constantly turning it up then down then up then down.
Good and constructive feedback 👍 There's a lot of noise from the camera being moved / the operator moving their hands too, which would be a solid quality improvement to get rid of somehow.
Audio needs a lot of work
same , it is the ground on the tig ,
I picked up a 04 911-996 Carrera 4 convertible with 32000 miles for dirt cheap! Only had to replace tires and a belt pulley everything else was like new!The best and most fun car I have ever owned and I have had a shit load of cars! Get one soon before all the RUclipsrs drive up the price even more! And don’t worry about the IMS bearing issue! It was only a problem with 1% of these cars yet everyone has locked on to that BS!
Been waiting for content from TA for awhile. The cut & dry these are the facts of how it's done, it's just this easy.
BTW, I'm not an old Dentist, but I am an old 69 year old retired Army SGT that loves Porsches!! HooAh !!
Awesome job Tony .. glad you started the channel!!
Always wondered what went on in your garage when passing by. We got some cool bikes and cars when you're ready to do a "meet the neighbors" segment.
Welcome to the club! The right way to close the frunk is by pushing down on the crest. If you really wanna be picky the Porsche crest on the center caps needs to point towards the valve stems.
Good to see see you have your own channel now Tony, Two great used parts for Porsche, Autobahn used Porsche parts in San Diego and LA Dismantler they have great prices on 996 parts. I wanna see more 996 videos
Loving the vids TA keep em coming.
BTW my dogs hated the high pitch sound of the welder 🤣
Tony appeasing us commoners with the Craftsman screwdrivers.
You go Tony ! Another paisano here into Porsches, muscle cars and just about anything you work on. Looking forward to more videos
Right on! Lots of stuff coming soon!-TA
and nothing's more expensive than a cheap Porsche (I'm actually qualified to say this) but I'm really looking forward to this!!!
I would extend this theory to a cheap diesel Jeep and a cheap Mini Cooper. Also qualified to say so.
@@adrianll8289 Mini cooper.... Just ask that wacky pair over at Bad Obsession Motorsports about how expensive a mini can be for just a little freshening up.
And a bracket. Or two.
Good to see "The Tig" !
I remember him helping you out with a Dodge diesel build on HRG
I can only hope to get as lucky as you did when I go out looking for my 911!!! Congratulations and great story!!!
Found this through @thesmokingtire really enjoy your excitement!
Awesome stuff brother, I must say ( where’s the merch),I’m in Louisiana and have been watching you since you first aired!! You $ Lucky was a great team, almost any kind of knowledge was @ your finger tips 👍. Keep up the good stuff!!!!
Yo Tony! Grew up and still live in Bucks County. Subscribed as soon as I came across this. I have a 12 second '69 Riviera. Bought a '98 Riviera in August. It was in "pretty good" shape. But there were quite a few "little things" that needed attention. It is basically as new now except for the crappy paint used in America in the 80's and 90's. Like you said, it's the little things that set an old car off. There is basically nothing wrong with it. Love the 3800 Supercharged Buick engine! BTW... fix the driver's mirror motor. LOL I really enjoy all of your shows. Keep up the good work!
jethro "lord bov" is a legend. home he comes to your channel and reviews one of your builds
Great stuff. The 996 is not the prettiest of 911's but it is a great drive. Glad to see you have it sorted and are enjoying it.
Tony can always check this one web site I've heard of for Porsche parts. www.porschepartsbyjeff.com/ ;)
I think the 996 is perfect.
Best looking? Meh. I like the 993 more. But I don’t fall into the camp of 996 haters. I think they’re amazing cars, glad they aren’t overpriced like the rest of them.
Two fish are sitting in tank, one say's to the other, 'Hey, You know how to drive this thing?' Greeting's from the UK!
tony's slowly begun the journey to turn into Lucky... next up, JORTS and New Balance!
This going to be a great channel.
love it so far, well except for the sound which I know you will get fixed.
Looking great so far. Definitely look into leveling your audio out. Sometimes you're hard to hear, sometimes the car drowns out your talking, and sometimes you have a welder running at 10,000% level, blowingnyour viewers ears out.
I look forward to seeing more!
We will get it sorted!-TA
another BANGER!
Thanks dude! And thanks for all the help!-TA
Collab pls!
no thanks
So glad you have a channel now! I've been building a pro touring 68 firebird for 3 years now that has a 3 link based off of the one in your cuda. Turbo LS 6 speed manual flavor! Just hoping I did as good a job as you guys did on HR garage. Loving the vids so far man, keep up the hard/good work!!
Funny to see Tony working on a 996! And you're going down the same rabbit hole as the rest of us. You buy it cheap, you fall in love, then you start fixing and improving things. Before you know it, it's not cheap anymore. At least you have some wiggle room with a $5k entry price.
Great video, great channel! My armchair advice/wishlist: 1) better lighting on what's being worked on. (Maybe it was just the black car!) 2) When shooting a mechanic always keep his hands in frame. Maybe just a little wider shot. This may be limited by the size of the shop.
long time fan , love you got a channel now. some advice as a viewer, dont rush threw so much . gives us a bit more of the meat and potatoes amd trim the fat like example the buddy that was welding the segment onlly needed 10 seconds. all and all great stufff!
Tony, great video!! I couldn't agree with you more about the 996! I am living through my own "issues" with a 2001 I bought. I recognize the roads you were driving, must be local to me as well!!!
OK I am a N/A car guy only "Chevy" mainly but you are teaching me that there are other cool modern hot rods out there that even I wouldn't look at one unless I saw this show..Thanks Tony even kids can teach us old guys!
Nothing wrong with working for what you want. Nice job Tony. Keep up the good work....PA PROUD
Always find myself putting in the hours, instead of the dollars, I like it! -TA
Bro ! U killed on this little black pearl ! It came out so tough! For the record make sure you check all coolant hoses very thoroughly. Tendency to crack all bad! Either way , great content ,kinda the way I do things ,no fear just it!
Dude, digging the channel. Can’t wait to see what’s up next. Best of luck!
Welcome aboard! We've got a pretty wide variety of good stuff coming, and collabs with other familiar faces!-TA
I've been hunting these and first gen boxsters as bargains for a while. Very cool, keep the videos coming!
Ha ha, I haven't seen this dude since Roadkill went PPV. Great video !
That Tesla lady story brought back so many memories.
When I had my boxster I was on a date, placing something in the front truck. My date asked me the same question. I told her well the engines in the back. So I opened the rear truck and said "what it should be here! Somebody must have stole my engine".
She panicked called her brother that's a police officer, we both had an amazing laugh on the phone 🤣
Love it, one of my favorite hosts on motor trend. I started watching road kill on RUclips when it was free and bought a subscription, but it is nice seeing you and finnegan back on RUclips making content for everyone to enjoy when episodes aren’t being put out on MT. Thanks tony -kal from MN
That is a freaking bargain right there dude! Congrats on the channel name too dude, "Stay Tuned" genius!
this is like haggard garage but with an actually skilled and eloquent, but frugal mechanic. keep slaying tone
Great to see hot rod stuff happening close to home, seeing roads and issues I recognize.
Valley Forge! This is right down the street from me. I also just picked up a 996 and these cars are incredible. Get one while you still can.
Would have like to see some of that detailing B-roll. You know that guy spent some time correcting that car.
Tony: “no, I broke it.”
We’ve heard that before ...
Loving the new channel. I’ve watched loads of Hot Rod Garage and love the fun factor and enthusiasm. Lovin this channel even more as it’s started with a 98 996 C2 like mine. I bought mine for £12k and have almost got it to 100%. Amazing cars. Good tyres and a suspension bushing and top mount refresh make a real difference. Looking forward to seeing more work on it. I also fitted a billet aluminium gear shift upgrade kit which makes the shift even firmer.
Awesome! I love these 996's they are incredible for the value!-TA
Hey - new channel! nice car Tony - had a triple black 99 for a few years. (have a 2000 aerokit car now) Yours looks great on the 997 wheels. The little hardtop mount covers are a ripoff, but will finish it off nicely.
well done my man a great little find and you did a great job mate...it looks brilliant that last shot it looks showroom fresh
Awesome job on bringing this bad boy back, great channel, keep it going Tony!!!
@4:15 I run and hike at Valley Forge Park. We do love our covered bridges in PA!! Lol. Great deal on the Porsche and I’m also dreaming about ownership someday so I’ve been looking at the 996’s too.
well done. it's satisfying to see everything fit in perfectly / especially after hours of hard work :) bro you make dreams reality lol
Good Job! I have done a lot of stuff on my 911, 997 C2 S, love my car just like you love yours.
Awesome channel
Let's get all the motortrend guys back on RUclips!!
Man a killer score...I love 911 wanted too buy one some day myself
I'm glad you are going to work on more than just Mopar stuff.
Great videos...no bull, just direct good info. I have the exact same car...loved Porsche so much I got a 997 also about 3 months later. I'm a fan...can I ask where you got the headlights and how much? Thanks
I inherited my FIL's '99 C2 project that had been parked for about 10 years. He took it apart to do the IMS bearing and then got sidetracked...a lot, and then died. The family offered the car to me knowing that I was the only chance it had of coming back to life, plus nobody wanted it since it couldn't even be towed away without a fair bit of work. I put in a new IMS, RMS, and AOS and have been driving it for several months, as well as fixing little odds & ends. Reverse was very difficult, and the rest of the shifting was hard. I repaired the sloppy factory shifter and adjusted the cables and she shifts like new again.
Tony, Look into Potomac German Auto Parts off Lime Kiln Road in Frederick, MD, a 2.5 hour drive from Philly. I'm a Benz guy but it is my go-to place for used parts. I've bought a full set of 17 inch Benz wheels for $600, pristine, a complete soft top plus mechanism for my '06 CLK 350 ragtop for less than a grand. I therefor was able to replace my top and rear window which was missing all but three of the defogger lines and had problems with the rubber molding for less that two grand when I'd been quoted five grand for the whole thing. We also got a replacement passenger door there for the CLK when a house guest backed into it in our driveway.
As a Pa native, I love the small and/or covered bridges. But, also equally as impatient when waiting in the line of traffic.
Valley Forge I think
Nice Porsche Tony. ‘Basic concept unchanged’ since 1963.
OMGooness, the 996 is actually my favorite 911! Good stuff Tony :)
I went from “these cars are lame, but I can afford one” to “this is the greatest triumph of human engineering” in like 3 weeks!
Tony, you are a madman! Drift it! Or at least call up Finnegan and get some NOS on that piece!
Has anyone done the world's first 8-second 1/4 mile Porsche?
...that'd be dope.
Awesome ingenuity !! on that top!
Great Episode! I bought a 95 Bmw M3 with no steering. Owner thought it had a broken column and had it apart. I put it back together and replaced the steering shaft (broken), fixed the cooling system (Bmw E36 always need done). New rims and tires and buff paint, all in $4,000. For a great ride!!!! NO FEAR
Very nice! I would jump at that chance! Plan is to sell this thing after a year and move onto the next project but it will be hard!-TA
996 is a top 5 car for me and my fav Porsche. Thanks for this.
Looking good. Mount another gopro to shoot behind you thru the windscreen while driving. Good edit job. Some shakey camera stuff that i bet is worked out in two more videos. Be sure to watch the video back a week after to see what you think.
Following, just bought a 996 Carrera 2 myself that also needs a bunch of work. Great content
I love those faulkin tires..
Good that you had the IMS bearing fixed.
I’ve been waiting for this channel. Thank you
Those are my absolute favourite Porsche alloys... love them
Still amazes me to see you on roads I drive everyday. Great video, keep it up man.
Yeah, I was surprised when I recognized the intersections of 252 and 202.
@@t34msp4m I walked into the spring city wawa one day and say tony there. Blew my mind. Lol. It seemed like after that he started really telling people he was from pa.
Did your boy fall asleep in the passenger seat a few times? Lol
I noticed that too haha
BTW, mine is a Basalt Black on Black Leather.. Absolutely Gorgeous Cabriolet.. Love that top down in the South.. Fun in the Sun in Georgia!!
Good informative video. I was hoping you were going to show the factory maintenance for lubricating the convertible top. Showing how to and the correct or best lubricants that are available would be awesome. I hope that’s something you could do. Thanks in advance.
Nice simple episode. It is the little things that count! Car looks great, and sounds pretty good, maybe just needs a little aftermarket exhaust?
That's the plan! Next episode, Hooker actually makes headers and exhaust now, and it looks killer. Stay Tuned! -TA
@@StayTunedTA awesome!
Keep up the videos, I am a muscle car guy, but everyone I know that is a "driver" ends up in a 911. Buy "driver" I mean a road course guy. I think they get tired of being beat on the small courses so the try one then they are hooked.
I liked this video and I probably build parts of that roof.I worked for a "Firma" that made these for Porsche in Starnberg,Munchen,Germany and I have to tell you.The standerds are extremely high..
That bridge in Valley Forge is a pain to drive by when there is tons of traffic. Gets annoying. Great video on the car tho! I personally like that body style as a top 3
Great video. Funny this came up. I am nominally a muscle car and 4x4 guy and was looking at Cayman S on line earlier as a potential next car purchase..
0:19 Exactly why we can't have nice things. Thank you for saying it.
Well done video. I really enjoy this type of thing. From a sound aspect, I really appreciate the job done here as Finnegan is sometimes just way too quiet to hear.
Nice work sir keep it up. Happy 2021 BROTHER
Take it down to the Freedom Factory and drift it with Cleetus and Taylor Ray. It would be epic!
enjoying the channel so far keep up the good work hey from southern California.>>> God BLESS
Super cool to see more of your content! Sick work, keep it up.
I own a 06 Carrera S(997) and we did a LS3 swap in it from Chavis Performance Engineering in MD. They have a plug and play harness for the 996/7 cars along with engine mounts and trans adapters. Its lighter than the stock 996/7 motor and sits 1" further forward for better weight distribution. Im based in NJ and he's in MD I am guessing you are in the PA area. That would be a awesome swap from your car. Throw on a GT2 front and rear bumpers with a ducktail thats a sick vert bro. Congrats on the car looks fun
I sold a '80 911 SC w/ sick AC here in the South. I bought a '99 911 996 Gen.1 w/ awesome A/C w/ 50K on the clock. Also w/ a new LN ceramic IMS W/Water pump,/AOS/Clutch/TO Bearing/ wired in Shifter / PSE and more. Good for 100K miles w/ no worries.. Grab a 996 while you can.
Hey Tony absolutely stoked brother for your channel I just found it but Finnegan is saying tuned up from his channel That's how I found you LOL you gotta give him a call in say stay tuned not tune up Hey brother you know I'm a subscriber can't wait till you hit a million subs peace.
Pro Tip: FCP Euro is a guy's best friend.
As a Volvo VR owner, I agree.
Literally the best
'Legit'
What a deal, you must be living right. You probably could get those blue inserts for free from a friendly electrician. We used to use them for attaching straps for conduit on brick after hammer drilling a hole and running in a screw. . I’ve also seen them used on drywall. A few cents a piece.
Lovely car and nice work bringing it up to scratch! Enjoy
Zip ties and bubble gum she will be as good as new! I love the Tony attitude! Keep the original content rolling guys!
