  • This weekend, Democracy Now! co-host Juan González gives the opening plenary at American University's one-day conference, "Burying 200 Years of the U.S. Monroe Doctrine," marking 200 years since the Monroe Doctrine, the foreign policy directive from President James Monroe that effectively declared all of Latin America a U.S. sphere of influence. For the past two centuries, the Monroe Doctrine has been repeatedly used to justify scores of invasions, interventions and CIA regime changes in the Americas. On today's show, we speak to two other conference guests, CodePink's Medea Benjamin and The Red Nation's Nick Estes, about the Monroe Doctrine's long and brutal legacy within U.S. imperialism.

I've also heard from at least one US "investing workers" (usually children of well-connected rich people) whose job it was (12 to 25 years ago) to go to Venezuela and invest in the Venezuelan stockmarket AGAINST their stocks to artificially bring them down since it's "not illegal" (and if they do go down due to fears, then you make money). I'm guessing it was to hurt whatever Presidents/Congress in Venezuela that the USA minority rich people did not like. It's pretty evil but "cannot be punished" and could only eventually be punished internationally if caught and processed which mean it can NOT be made illegal by Venezuela alone (or anyone for now, not even the UN has that power).

France was integrated by traitors in the UE and NATO, even in 2005, we wanted to keep away, and the citizen voted against further integration. Our corrupts managers, made then, another vote, alone, just keeping the people away from deciding again. And then they incorporated us again in NATO. That is not a democracy, check the news nowadays to see the state of French democracy.
Russia is one of our oldest ally, like Scotland, how come we're following The USA in their madness ?
Idem with Serbia, Lebanon, Iran, all of these countries were friendly toward us, and yet we fought them ? Why, we attacked the victims and aided the persecutor ? Against our own interest, we ended up attacking friendly nations, we were closely tied with !
When a nation commits a large scale suicide in a so short period, do you really think it's because it's independent ?
Who cleaned up the past of former Nazi's high rank officials, promoted them in NATO, or EU or funded some universities, so they can promote a rebranded national socialism ?
      The USA...
Where our leaders like to study ? USA's universities, for instance Georgetown and the likes.
USA is just as corrupt as France, the state of democracy nearly the same, but who's financing this mess, who spread war, to plague other countries ?

It was with much appreciation for our southern neighbors (I’m married to a first generation Mexican-American) that I ask these questions - admittedly with minimal understanding of inappropriate US invasions into the countries south of the border:
    1) If the US is to be blamed for prior military involvement justified by the Monroe Doctrine, is the US still being blamed for the issues currently effecting these countries?
    2) If that be the case, then is it the US policies that are responsible for the large numbers of migrants coming to America? 3) All that said, shouldn’t the leaders of the troubled countries where many immigrants are coming from be held accountable and made to be responsible for making their own country desirable to its own citizens? Shouldn’t these leaders address drug cartels, armed militia committing atrocities against their own people?
    4) Is the US supposed to not only admit blame for past military injustices carried out with countries to the south, but then indefinitely shoulder the burden of all the citizens who are now fleeing these same countries? When does US responsibility end and the governmental responsibility in the countries south of the border begin?
    5) Are the countries south of the US, just seeing the migration of their citizens as a way to take back what was truly unjust, destructive colonial ideologies perpetrated since the 16th century (mind you, the US was not involved at that time but it was Spain)? Shouldn’t the modern nation of Spain be held responsible alongside the US?
    6) Weren’t US sanctions levied within the past 10-15 yrs against some of these countries directly enacted to urge these countries to deal with the internal struggles of their nations and the drug trade?
As noted, I am unlearned and appreciate DemocracyNow for airing these kinds of informative videos. I just would like to know more if anyone would care to enlighten me and answer my questions. Thank you:)

      Basicly. *YES*
US action and control of the south isnt just MOMENT
But a Constant abuse and struggle.
You can see it most in the 80',whe EVERY DICTATORSHIP the US finance Give up, BUT WITH CONDITIONS, conditions that SHACKLE Each country to the US as their Employee and slave
They would MAINLY traxe on Dollars, US companies get ABSURD Tax cuts, EVERYTHING is privitize, Investogation and judge of ANYONE involve will be prohibited, so not only keep this countries poor, with bad goverment, but also exploit its resources trought privitize companies (China explot this, but withouth Mayor concecions, just tax cuts, thus why most douth countriea "like" China)
And when that was ENOUGH a direct cue will happend, you cann see it with Venezuela, When it tried to become a REAL competent Petro Export (a treath to Dolar power) they sabotage the economy and even try to INVADE it trought private companies or other Corrupt goverment Like Argeninian MACRI (Search Panter plan, an invation trough colombia, backed by the US).
Then you have other like directly bribing politicians like Previous Colombian president, Half of the Actual Peruan congess, Previous Argentinian President, Bolsonaro is in fuckig florida drinkig smoothies for F is sake as Lula was free for is discorver the judge coluded with the prosecurion and THE CIA, to get him in jail, Lula's wife even died Days After a Police Raid in her house, all in bogus and fake charges, coordianted by US intelligence.
And then there is DIRECT military intervention WITHOUTH admtance, Like how the "war on drugs" was more a "Conquest on drugs" as is know most of the present cartel ahve deal with the CIA ans US politicans like the clintons, and in exchange they keep the zone dangerous and tye migrant waves that the US REJECT YET ILLEGAL INMIGRANTS ARE THE MAIN SOURCE OF LABOR.
heck you have trump using ilegals in his hotels, 2 got sht down for that.
Recently was discorverr CONCENTRATION Camps for LEGAL inmigrants, where they where basicly slaves, Legalize slaves, In gorgia.
The intervention NEVER STOP, just become more quiet.

@Marek Cracovia Part of the Monroe Doctrine was the belief in Manifest Destiny, which held that the U.S. should have control of all of North America. This belief was behind the war of 1812 and the Alaska purchase, as well as the U.S. belief that they had the right to interfere in any political situation in Latin America that was not in their best interest. It also stated that Europe could not interfere in Latin American political stances. They also influenced Canadian political decisions from that day to this. They are presently contesting Canada's sovreignty in the North.

    • @karenburrows9184
      @karenburrows9184 Год назад +1

@Marek Cracovia In June of 1812, the U.S. declared war on Great Britain, and the first action in the war was a British attack on an U.S. fort. I know this story well, because I am Canadian, and I was taught the history. And yes, the British navy was stationed at ports under British dominion in the Caribbean and attacked and occupied New Orleans to weaken trade supply routes. There doesn't seem to be any historical evidence that the U.S. favoured British immigration over any other European nation. So I don't really see your point as it pertains to the Monroe Doctrine and manifest destiny.

The Monroe doctrine was supposed to allow us to keep relationships close and warm and friendly while seeing no unwanted influence in the hemisphere that would threaten us! It was allways yhere to be a reason to maintain relationships not destroy them!

      Good points!
Let's be reminded that private property does not exist in US, CAN, UK, AUS, NZ and other countries
      Who are the culprits?
Are they the indigenous people, their tribal and territorial competition, cultures, ...?
      Is it Catholics, Protestants, others?
When did Catholic church alter the recognition of indigenous peoples to having souls, being humans and forbided slavery?
Is it greed, power, dominance, gold, lands, resources, and perpetual revenues, who were the players, planners, beneficiaries?
      Why?
It's a Big topic spanning recent 500 years, and from recorded to immemorial human history.
For an easier, tangible grasp of bit of history by broad to narrower facts:
I.e, Ask the North American First Nations people's and treaties from 1600 to present and especially after 1763 and 1776. The lands swindled in various ways and means from indigenous/ FNP East to West. Labelled as chartered lands or 'purchases' then granted to Dutch, English, French, 'colonies' A,B,C,D,E,etc. Later each divided into areas, plots of land 'sold' / 'homestead' to new settlers. Those lands were levied by taxes, annually, of late quarterly plus interest / usury, and fees.
Essentially all a form of chattel serfdom and slavery. Resulting in burdens to owners and renters no matter type of property
Governments through to local state, provincial, county, parish, city and town can seize private property and evict owner, renters. The latter is a basic cause of landless, house-less / homelessness. Thus sanctuary of place is as precarious as it was and is for indigenous peoples.
Obviously, besides debts do to mortgages, equity loans, reverse mortgages, credit-cards, car loans, gambling, poor choices.
As Major General Smedley D Butler, USMC spoke on, and 1935 wrote "War is a Racket".
It holds true, Internationally and Domestically; both are based on Private Profits but Socialised Losses. Only difference are the nomenclature and uniforms of the hit-men & women.
It's a BIG CLUB, but you, me and 97% of humanity ain't in it. Paraphrased from George Carlin

We know by now the brutality of Christianity. It has caused more harm than all wars combined.
We are comparing a period of time to the present which is misleading. Our history, right and wrong, was of a time when attempts were being made to form a new nation. We were and are now not perfect. Nation building is not an east task. And self interest is paramount though always just. But as any nation, we can and must admit our mistakes and attempt to correct past malfeasance.
Native Americans had their land stolen, slavery plagued America, racism, anti-cultural prejudice of immigrants, all these thing are our heritage.
As long as there is a will there is a possibility to correct and change course. And change is imperative for growth. Other nations have much longer histories. Our is only 247 short years. We must admit mistakes and make changes or fail and be witness to our own demise. Manifest destiny is over. Multi-lateral sovereignty is the future.
There is one planet to be shared by all. The Moon and Mars or any other solar body will not save us. Here and now is our opportunity to make choices we ALL can live with.

Have no problem with the monroe document. But if you declare your self Don of the Ameticas then lift up the Ameicas and not EUROPE. Open all Boarders of the americas like Europa. Form an American Union and build up this region. Or take Monroe Document and flush it down the toilet.

Damn you missing the point. What you just described in your post the Monroe doctrine was written to prevent all that . Preventing the empowerment of these poor countries in central , south America and the Caribbean.. do you know the Monroe doctrine was written because of the Haitian revolution. To prevent other poor countries in central and south America and the Caribbean from rising up against the white oppressors . It's an oppressive document.
