This is a nice big band, I love it! Looks to be around twice the size of ours, and I'm assuming you have ~200 people. Keep up the great work! - Friendly Neighborhood Tenor Drummer.
The mallet work is crazy I am the best mallet player in my Middle school band, but I can't imagine how much work they put into this song since I can barely hold 2 in one hand with control over them. Great Job!!
Ok, I'm not a drum major myself, but can we all just agree that drum majors all have guts. Like, their guts are freakish. Those stands are scary asf. Do NOT lock your knees. Oh, GOD! Especially the lead drum major! Bro has a set of stairs that turns😭😭
I panic every time I see them at the top of a ladder with nothing but a thin rail on the front. Nothing to stop them going straight back if they move a little bit more. It’s nerve racking.
Dear god... My eldest sister was a drum major in high school (She just got accepted into college with a music program :D) and she freaked me the heck out when she was up there.@@Thornmarching
question ive always wanted to know, how does the drum major learn the counts and learn the time signatures for the show, do they have a specific page or just take a certain instruments sheet music and learn the counts?
Drum Major of a small band of about 40 people here. Most of the time i just listen for the people who consistently play good to know where I’m at in the music. I usually learn the melody of the song, and go from there based on what my Director tells me.
Drum majors usually have access to their own score, where they can see the time signature changes and dynamics so they can apply it to their conducting
Time signatures you have to score for and you have to memorize. Count structure you kinda just listen for. I just made a sheet with every hold, move, and count and what measure it was on. It was very helpful
Question for my audition: how do you focus when both of your hands are doing something different? For example if your doing a downbeat, strike, or crescendo with one hand, how do you continue to use your other hand so normally? It throws me off every time
there’s an exercise where you do one shaped with your left hand while snapping and one with your right hand while snapping, it takes practice. my best friend is a drum major of this band along side the boy in this video.
Another exercise I used to help with that is to just begin conducting a usual 4/4 time and then let you left hand drop out. Then when you feel comfortable raise your left hand up as if you are crescendoing for four beats then lower it to decrescendo for four beats. Do this over and over again and eventually go to two beats cresc and two beats decrescendo.
Yes I agree, I was one of the tenors. We definitely started a habit of rushing because the bass entrance at the beginning was always late, so we decided to keep rushing and couldn't stop😭😭
Most likely for if something is wrong with someone's instrument out on the field they can run up and get a backup instrument and continue on without a problem.
It's because we have a Pride and Spirit group. The spirit group doesn't go to competitions, so they are usually working on other music or practicing their drill.
For BOA we made school history by making it to the finals for the first time! Our UIL journey this year ended at Area due to a few things outside of our control, and some within it, but we have learned a lot and plan to take State by storm next year!

There are band kids in my school who run cross country, on the baseball team, on the field hockey team, take multiple AP courses, so I guarantee that they have more of a life than you. The stereotypes for band kids are far from being accurate, and so I believe that you should have no shame for being a band kid, Mr. Jordan Plange, and that you saying you are a kid in band shows that you seek attention and want to be recognized as being special or different. OR, maybe you go to a very woke school where everyone is liberal, and the band kids are even weirder. We have a few people in our band who are a bit out there, but we go to a school where most people are very conservative and 40% of the school are rednecks, which is also a stereotype, but they are also just normal people who are usually genuine, nice people. What they like is just influenced by their surroundings and the people around them as they grew up, and going to a school that is surrounded by cornfields and longhorns will make you country. I'm very sorry if you feel like you need to disassociate yourself from the rest of your band, because being in band isn't something you should need to be ashamed of. If there are some weird people in your band, you shouldn't need to worry about being grouped in with them if you make a good positive image for yourself. You also need to embrace what you have in common with your band mates, maybe if you got to know them, they won't seem so bad. From experience, NOBODY CARES that you are in band. Well, at least they won't think less of you. When they see you busting out your chops on that football field during halftime, they're gonna be bragging about you to their friends in the student section. I don't know what grade you are in, but if you are a underclassman in high school, you'll learn to embrace it. If you are an upperclassman, you are probably just annoyed by underclassman because they're still immature, but I GARAUNTEE that that's how upperclassmen thought of you when you were an underclassman. And if you are in middle school, then you haven't even true band. Nothing makes you bond more than sharing blood, sweat in tears during band camp, the whole day, every day, for two weeks at least🤣. And if you are in college, I REALLY don't know what your issue is because from what I've seen, colleges love their marching bands because of all the hype.
