  • In this video I will show how to fix the slipping OEM 25% LSD unit from BMW typ188 rear diff, by changing the friction disks inside the unit. The procedure is same for smaller typ168 and larger typ210 rear diffs.

    Very good video.
    How to check if the LSD plates are used without disassembling the diff ?

    • @pazi88
      @pazi88  7 лет назад +8

      You can try lifting one rear wheel of the ground, support the one in ground that it can't rotate, no handbrake, neutral gear and try to rotate the wheel which is on the air from the driveshaft nut using torque wrench. Go up in torque and you should be able to rotate the wheel without the torque wrench clicking at about 60 to 80 Nm. If it rotates without the torque wrench clicking at less than 60 Nm the plates are probably too worn.

    • @pazi88

      It's pretty normal that those bolts get stripped. Normally like half of them are so stuck that I strip the torx socket. I then just hammer in suitable size XZN bit and use that to open the bolts.

    You had to repair the compression ring. I see even on the video, that the surface was damaged. When you have so badly damaged friction disk it is definitely because of a bad ring surface.

    • @pazi88
      @pazi88  6 лет назад

      Again. Only coloring and minor wear that doesn't feel on finger. So it's fine. I'm well aware that if the surface is damaged, it needs resurfacing. But in this case the friction disks only were worn. But yeah I could have explained more in detail what needs to be checked.

    • @pazi88

      Rofl Copter3000 No you don't because this doesn't change anything related to those. Just remember to put all back in the same way it was. For example the side bearing cover shims affect the backlash so you can't mix those.

    i have a 188 LSD in the same condition, is it ok to put in new friction plates when the old surface is worn out, should it be resurfaced before reassembly?

    • @pazi88
      @pazi88  7 лет назад +1

      danny perez It would be better to resurface it, but it's not mandatory if the surface isn't totally destroyed. It needs special tools that we and most other people won't have. And normally the wear on the part that you don't change is just minimal scratches. The friction disk is made from softer material which is meant to wear instead of the other surface. It's like same case when you change the regular clutch. You change the clutch disk and the pressure assembly. But leave the surface on flywheel untouched in normal case. Of course if there is some metal chunks that are embeded to the surface of the diff you could carefully try to drind those away.

    So its ok to install new plates dry?

    • @pazi88
      @pazi88  7 лет назад

      Raimo Haljas Yes. Those will be lubricated when you fill up the diff with oil.

    • @rhalyas
      @rhalyas 7 лет назад

      Even then i would say its difficult for the oil to move on those plates, when they are under pressure.
      Is-nt it like building an engine completely dry and without any pre-lubrication oil.

    • @pazi88
      @pazi88  7 лет назад +2

      Raimo Haljas But those parts don't start moving immediately when you start moving the car, like engine parts will. And when you start driving the oil will splash all over the LSD unit lubricating it. Also the oil has tendency to creep upwards on surfaces so the whole unit doesn't even need to be covered in oil to get it lubricated. But ok. It doesn't hurt to lubricate those while installing but it's not mandatory.
