      Hi mate, really tough to say until I have the car on the road. I've got a 4.27 on the car which I'm planning to start with. But I'm 99% sure it will be ridiculously short and unbearable on the motorway.
      I'm expecting to want something in the 3's. Probably a 3.39 or similar.
      There's more than likely a way to calculate the engine speed with a gear ratio and final drive combo, but I'm gonna run what I've got at first and see what happens.

    It'll feel like a little rocket ship with the 4.27 FD! From previous experience I would recommend ditching the vibration dampener that's bolted to the guibo on the 'box output shaft. For me (e36) it ended up fouling the selector rod for the shifter and just generally made working in that area and fitting the shifter parts a nightmare because of how big and bulky it is. I also noticed no increase in vibration after removing it so don't really know why it's there? Would make sense on a diesel I suppose but the M52 is silky smooth.

    • @SPANNERRASH
      @SPANNERRASH  Год назад +1

      Yeah we will see how it behaves, probably a bit too aggressive but I'm not sure yet! 😆 Interesting what you say about the vibration dampener, I will make a judgement on that when I come to fit the prop shaft. I wonder what your flywheel looked like before you had it machined, and if it is really necessary to do. I have just taken the M20B27 out of my 87 325E and removed the transmission and there is no difference between the clearance on the back of the M20 vs M52. My car has the dual mass flywheel, and the crankshaft mating surface sticks out a few mm beyond the rest of the flywheel. Also, the back side of mine is already totally flush with the outer teeth, just like yours does in the video. I wonder if this is the difference between the early single mass vs the late model dual mass as I have in my car.

    • @SPANNERRASH
      @SPANNERRASH  9 месяцев назад

      In the video there was more clearance than I expected after machining, some people do say that you can use a spacer instead to get enough clearance. Without either machining or a spacer though, the flywheel would clash with the engine I'm quite sure.
      Interesting what you say about late model 325e with dual mass flywheel. To be honest I've never seen one of these, I didn't know that dual mass type existed.
      I'd be very hard to say without comparing them side by side.

      @SnowBlazeKongen Coupe Touring and sedan with same engines have the same driveshafts since they have the same wheelbase. Just the bearing carrier in the middle is different between facelift and prefacelift, but you can swap those pretty easy (a new one is cheap and not a bad idea anyway I guess). The distance of the boltholes is 1cm different 14 and 13cm if I recall correctly.
      Original E30 transmission brackets with bushings fit E36/E39 transmissions (except some very rare early ones... Sportboxes and so on)
      @SPANNERRASH
      According to the parts catalogue it's a S5G 250G TAJT. Pretty same as E36 with an ratio of 1:1 in 5. gear (hence the longer diff as most E30 have 0.81) came in an '97 523i.
      I've heard rumors about different flanges on compact and E30 diffs but never had a missmatch so far. The flanges for the axles just pop out, no messing around with bearings. I've changed the ones from the original 318i in the 323ti diff to check for different distance and I could not find a difference.

    What clutch release bearing did u got? Some people say get the e30 323i bearing.. It's taller... And u need that because u have an m20 lightened flywheel.
    Others say.. Just the m20 325i release bearing is good enough.
    Ps :I got an 318is gearbox like u*
    And also I notice U don't have a bearing at the m20 flywheel.. Shouldn't there be one innit?

      Awesome the '84 E30 sounds like an awesome project, I actually really like the pre-facelift look. Also if you were in the UK your car would be about to be MOT and Tax exempt as a classic.
      I used the standard M20 release bearing and there are no issues from that perspective since I did that.
      There shouldn't be a bearing in the flywheel itself, but there is one in the crank hub on the engine which the nose of the gearbox slots into. You will need to change this (to 12mm I think, but measure the gearbox to confirm).
      Mine was already changed to one which fits the 318is gearbox because the M52 engine had been used in an E30 swap. I forgot to clarify that in the vid!

      @@brintacornflakes7573 I am using a standard Sachs E30 325i clutch kit paired with the M20 flywheel.
      The pedal feels right to me, in a natural place in the middle. Some people have said you need a different release bearing but I'm not feeling compelled to try to change mine, it seems good.

    Some time ago we tried the superglue clutch aligment with the cheapest glue on an E60 V8. Worked too well, the car started moving with the pressed out clutch in first gear. We removed the gearbox in the end cause we think we made a mistake. Had to scrape the disk from the pressure plate. If I dont see with my 2 eyes I wouldn't believe it.😀😀
    I planed to use a 6 speed box from an e90 316i on my 318IS E36 so i can use a 4.xx diff with moderate rpm.
    Keep up the good work!

      Haha nice! So it really does work with the super glue. I will have to give that a try next time. Shame it didnt work out with the gearbox for you. Cheers! 😀

    Looking very nice! Good to see you're using the 318is gearbox, i guess i have the same in my car. I havtn checked yet. That makes it somewhat interesting to maybe do the m52b28 swap in the future. I wonder if the gearbox will be strong enough!

    • @SPANNERRASH
      @SPANNERRASH  Год назад +1

      Yeah it's a tried-and-tested method so I'm hoping the gearbox is strong enough. To be honest I've never heard of someone blowing a Getrag 240 box up with an NA M50 or M52 swap so it should be safe.
      I'll be sure to put some good gearbox oil in though and monitor it. 😁
      The ZF box would have been better durability, but it also complicates things in other ways.
