Been looking at your vids for a few days now and honestly, I am really impressed. I have raised my family off off the money that I have made in music. I have been an artist, a manager, a tour manager, a production manager, an engineer,, a marketing director and a lot things in between... literally putting kids through college right now from music. I was skeptical coming in looking at your vids, but maaaan, you are legit and thorough and on top of that your presentation is calming even when your content challenges beliefs. I have to give you your respect. Keep doing your thing man. You are going to help a lot of people.
Great content as always. I released 3 albums so far this year (1 a month for Jan, Feb and March). I have a grand total of 134 listens lol. I was happy to have that many because I literally am starting from ground zero with no fans. My idea was to build content so that when people did catch on they would have plenty to listen too. Your advice about singles makes sense and reminds me of the strategy Russ used. I think I’m going to switch to singles and try to realer one single a week starting next month. Can’t wait for the rest of this series.
Peace! This is Atiba (57 year young female Music Producer) from Plainfield NJ (home of Parliament & Funkadelic). I appreciate you for building with US about these matters. I originally was determined to come out with an EP first! Thanks soo much! I see the wisdom in putting out a single first then another one, etc to build my fan base 💯👊🏾🔥
Im the drummer in a band and we released our first album last year and it did decent for a bunch of high schoolers, a dropout and 27 year old with a labor jobs first album. This isnt programed midi instruments i networked and looked diligently for real musicians and i found a group of some of the most talented musicians ive ever met. luckily we are friends with other local bands so we had help in promoting it. When we released it we played about 5 shows locally, some of which were pretty decent in size. But we went into a hibernation in writing againg once summer ended. This 2nd album is quality and we have taken it so seriously the guitarist and i who were seniors have since graduated and i work during the day. The vocalist is a senior but got accepted to a small percent exceptnce rate school and is leaving after summer. The album is just about done and these songs are going to be looved. We poured our souls into it. We are going to make a movie to go with it the one who owns the studio has always made videos and been an editor but hes doing research to make the film. The whole album fits together and makes a few different little stories we are going to make like a big music video for all of it. The single is going to come out with the music video and will be used to promote the album. We know the person who runs our local music venue and we basically have the place for our debuting show when we want. We can have the set and time all or mostly for ourselves if we want. That way ticket sales arent divided between other bands who didnt bring as much people. Also a member knows musicians in nearbye states that may let us open for one of their bigger shows. I hope we can launch off with the release of this album and i hope we can play live consistently without losing momentum on growth in fans/popularity. I really want to keep playing shows as we go into writing our next album as well so we dont go into another hibernation. But thats a lot of work and balancing that im not sure the whole bands willing to do. The album is done for my parts drums have been written and i layed them doen on all tracks. Now is a few more solos to fill and some vocals to add and its to he finished mixing. But then the movie then release. I hope we can do all of this and have a tour before the summer ends because that's when the singer is leaving. I hope deep down we start growing rapidly and finding success with this, and hopefully itd drive the singer to stick with it.
The best way to promote a full project is to find ways to make it digestible. Even 2 years later, singles are an important part of that strategy. In the TikTok era, you're lucky if someone pays attention to you for 30 seconds. Let alone 35-60 minutes for an album. That said, there ARE ways to entice people to go on a longer journey with you. Maybe you could try making a short film with the album as a soundtrack. Or encourage fans to make videos with different songs, that can be playlisted altogether later. There are ways, but it'll take creativity, and a willingness to break the album down into parts that can be reassembled later.

Mixtapes are like albums in terms of promotion methods.

Thanks for your videos! How important do you think it is to have a manager early on?
Video is titled “How to promote an album”... then video host goes on to tell me to put out singles…. This is not what I came here for…
