Staggeringly supreme playing. Never seen him play before but have his CDs in my collection. It's not easy for pupils to play like that or anywhere near as well without extreme musicality - and a clock-speed in his mind that would beat the fastest bird! Martin is like Peterson on the keyboard it's other planet stuff. Thanks for posting it - enlightening skill and I wouldn't dare to try playing like that it would cause manic depression :-(

The pinky anchor is a reference to MT's association with the country music guitar legends especially the one and only Chester "Chet" Atkins. It actually gives one an advantage when playing an amplified electric guitar because no tension is needed to sound the strings. It also prevents one from having to check the position of the picking hand. Banjos also employ this technique with great results. Stay positive and keep learning.

Never understood the need to anchor the hand with the pinky on the pick guard. Maybe it's my classical training...

The pinky anchor is frowned upon in Classical playing. I went to a Manuel Barrueco performance and during the Q&A he was called-out for it. He essentially apologized and admitted the bad habit. The pinky isn't used much in Classical, but it's valuable in Jazz and especially valuable in Brazilian Classical and Brazilian Jazz. (I'm a wanabe Brazilian.)
Also look at Martin's awkward form at 4:04. Doesn't his neck hurt after a short while? The way that he's straining to see his guitar. My Classical teacher made sure that I had good form. Later, I switched to a Jazz teacher to learn beyond triads and get music theory.
      His playing is incredible!

Great playing but a bad "lesson". 98% of guitar players can't play at the highly advanced level of Martin Taylor. Martin is playing way too many notes and making this tune way too complex for most players. This might be OK for a recording or a concert, but not for teaching the song. If you are an intermediate player or even advanced----- listen to the Hank Garland version to learn the basic tune. Hank plays it simply but beautifully. Hank was a far better guitar player than Martin Taylor or most guitarist will ever be, and a much better teacher of jazz guitar.

Haha, check out his own playing at his channel, thats some soulful stuff to dig into ;) (might need some EQ (or IQ?) when playing that "blues". Felixrockss: check out which pentatonic that works best with key your in when you´re playing. It helps alot :)

What a great player and technician and yet very sensitive. He's among the top guitarists and God knows there are many guitpickers on the scene! What is fascinating with the guitar is there is no other instrument that can render so many different styles of music and with different tunings to boot!!
