I love the way you play in such a restrained way, avoiding the temptation to 'shred', which you no doubt could, and instead just pay homage to the beautiful sounds of the tune.
This song has a lot going on for shredding. lol. Perhaps, in balancing the melody with the moving harmony, it requires "shredding "in a totally different manner.
Beautiful tasteful jazz harmonies and very skillful playing. What more can I say? Lovely tone from the strings, no squeaks from the fingers. I wonder how many thousand hours of practice it takes to get that proficient? Super tune mixed with tasty harmony - it ticks all the boxes. Thanks for posting such a treat.
I so admire your playing, ideas, etc., and that you do it on an off the shelf Ibanez (not the fancy GB model either) or a Collings, or a Benedetto. There's a lesson in and of itself. I know you have expensive guitars, but when you turn up here and play KILLER stuff on a 'regular,' 'AFFORDABLE guitar it warms me.
I've loved this song since (as a sugar cubes fan), I rushed out to the Bjork's "Debut". I didn't know it was a jazz standard at the time. Anyhow, like a few others, I'd love to see a lesson or a transcription. Thanks for the lovely version in any case.
@@BenHawkinsvids yeh. I listened to that one just now for the first time. It’s also quite good. I didn’t find it easy to track down sheet music for any version but there were some ideas out there for that one. In the end I found a Hal Leonard “chord melody standards” or something. In the mail from the US to Karratha, Australia. I guess I’ll see it just after Christmas!
Nice and great as always Chris (also the night has thousand eyes). If you plan to release a book, I'll be the first to buy...I already have the songs that are on sheetmusic.
@@ChrisWhitemanGuitar Me too! I would very much like a book (hardcopy) of your arrangement of "Like Someone In Love". I haven't had good luck with music digital downloads. I see other arrangements of songs by you on SheetMusicPlus, but not "Like Someone In Love". This song is special because it's not easy to find guitar chord melody for it.
Thanks sasaamaster, This one is not written down. If you are interested, I have some other arrangements that can be found here: www.chriswhitemanmusic.com/chord-melody2/
Loving your videos. Such great tone. Really like the chromatic basslines you carry, and your christmas tunes are so smooth. Any recommendations for books to work through to build chops on chord melody?
Thanks Mathew, the Joe Pass Chord Solos are great, www.sheetmusicplus.com/title/chord-solos-sheet-music/3510555?aff_id=557903 they don't have tab, only standard notation. George Van Eps has some great books too.
Great playing. Love your stuff. The high string tone on this recording is thinner than some of your other recordings. Was that on purpose or a product of amp use, mic choice, etc? I personally like the richer tone on some of your other recordings better, but I could see trying for this to separate melody more.
Thanks, it was not intentional. I routinely experiment with different amps, setttings, mics, etc. I'm not sure what i was using for this video, but I agree with you. I prefer a richer tone as well.
hey man, Do you hold on to all your guitars or do you rotate them out? When helps you decide which one to play at any given time and what guitar of your would you take to a desert island if you could only take one? Thanks!
I have been holding most of them, unless I need to sell to acquire something else. i sold my Gibson L5 to buy my Borys B120. That would be the one i take to a desert island
Very nice playing and I like your arrangement. I am working it out now, and have it in E-flat. Wondering if you moved it to C to advantage of some open strings, etc. If so, how many different keys do you try before you find one that works best for you?
thanks T R. I originally learned this tune from a Bud Powell recording many years ago. He plays it in C, which I believe is the original key. Lots of people play it in Eb too. I will adjust keys if it lays better on the guitar or gives me some open strings that I like. I tried it in Eb too, but liked C better. So to answer your question, I only tried 2 different keys.
I had the same question and thought if there are so many remarks and questions there must be at least one who asks for the key. Et voilá ! Here it is. You play it in Cmaj. I do not know what the original key is. The Real Book says it is in E flat but indeed playing it in this key, the high G is a problem in Chord melody especially when you ( and I too) use an archtop guitar. The neck is not long enough to play this tone in a comfortable chord . Playing it in a lower register it does not sound good. I will give it a try in Cmajor too. Best regards from the Netherlands
4 years later and this is still the most beautiful version of this song I’ve heard
Very kind, thank you!
