Best resource for info on this cartridge out there has to be this video, thanks! I've had this for a couple years and really didn't use it just because of the severe lack of info, no one ever properly explained save management on it either.
I made a fix patch to allow Pilot Wings to work with a Mario Kart cartridge in the copier. If that's something you want just let me know. It works perfectly without any glitches.
You have a very EASY to understand and a VERY SIMPLE, and yet CLEAN tutorial/narrative of Gaming. Love your NARRATIVE; you don't pick on anyone; you're just HONEST to the FLOOR!!!!
The DSP 1 chip has different revisions, hence why it does not work when you cross Pilot Wings and Mario Kart, exactly as it wouldn't work if you swapped the chips in both cartridges. There are 2 games I believe that use the same revision DSP 1 as Mario Kart does. For games that do not work because of security check, try and get a hacked rom, they have to get rid of security checks in order to hack I believe. I can run any game that does not have an enhancement chip on my Super UFO.
For anybody who's backed up saves from the UFO to an SRM file, restored them to the cart, and started the game only to discover their saves aren't there... I discovered that for some games, the UFO overwrites the first 8 bytes of SRM files it backs up with UFO%UFOZ characters (the '%' actually represents a non-printable character in this case, to be precise). It seems some games ignore these changed bytes when restoring, but at least for ActRaiser, the SRM file will appear to restore successfully to the cart, but when you play the game, your save won't actually be there. Fortunately, if you use a hex editor to compare the SRM file from the UFO to one generated by an emulator for the game's ROM, and overwrite those first 8 bytes in the UFO SRM file with the first 8 from the one from the emulator, ActRaiser can again read the save file and all your data will be there (i.e. the 8 bytes don't corrupt the actual save data, it seems). I haven't discovered any other games yet that won't read a restored save if those bytes are present, but I imagine the same procedure would work for others.
Despite the fact that it will never replace my Super Everdrive as a flashcart, I found that the Super UFO 8's features still made it a worthwhile purchase. The Super UFO Pro 8 has ensured that my Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy III saves from over 20 years ago will never disappear. When I replaced the batteries in my carts several years ago, I had to temporarily wire a second battery in parallel so that the SRAM would not lose power. It was a pretty scary process, and the success rate was not 100%. RIP Secret of Mana & Breath of Fire II saves. Thanks to the Super UFO 8, I won't have to deal with such risks next time I have to replace the batteries. I was also able to copy my SNES Chrono Trigger saves to the Super Famicom cartridge. It actually worked fine, except the characters' names were all gibberish. A quick visit to the Nu in Laruba village fixed that. It also acts as a handy adapter for playing SNES games on the Super Famicom. If you look at the prices of SNES/SFC converters on ebay, you will find that they'll set you back the price of a Super UFO Pro 8.
Next time you attempt the battery swap; Just plug it into the console and boot it up with no case on. You can hot swap the battery while the game is running without losing anything. Thats the easiest way. I have a junk snes mobo (doesn't display audio/video) and bottom case that I use for this purpose. It just lives on my desk lol
You're right about the Super famicom the SNES cart adapter too. Somehow you gotta be able to get a cheap chinese one for a couple bucks but you're going to have to get it from a seedier supplier than ebay or amazon
71dembones I have no experience on electronics repairs. Every battery that I swapped so far was on my own stuff. For that reason I aways waited the battery die before changing. On your repairs how do you determine that a battery is going to die? Multimeter works well for that?
As I have understand it, dumping your own ROMs is technically the only "legal" way to do it. Would be cool to have a review of the options to do so. Like the mentioned Retrode, or the Kazzo cartridge "INL Retro" Dumper, CopyNES. Creating ISO backups, or access ROMS from VC etc... anyways, nice video as always :-D
Great video as always guys! Even if I'm not really interested in the subject of a video, I always love hearing what Coury and Try have to say. I'd say you two are the most criminally underrated gaming channel on RUclips.
If there ever is something like a Super UFO Pro 9, let's hope it just lets us apply patches directly like you would on the Retron5 or Retro Freak or something. My Cyber Gadget Retro Freak arrived yesterday and it's very simple. Put the IPS file in a folder labeled "Patch", stick it in the console, insert the game cartridge and after it's finished dumping the ROM just go into the settings and enable the patch. One cool trick I discovered was that while the Retro Freak backs up the game ROM to SD card, if gives you the option to play either the ROM on the cartridge or SD card.
The reason why SA-1 games can't be dumped on the Super UFO is because they have copy protection on them. It is illegal to bypass this protection sadly so Super UFO doesn't support bypassing it neither does the Retrode. But most SNES games don't have this protection on them happily so it isn't much of an issue. S-DD1 games like Star Ocean also have this copy protection too.
Thank you SO MUCH for explaining the limitations of this device. I find it pretty remarkable that it took this long to find any decent information about it!
+SikSlayer [Try4ce] We have begun to work on Saturn RGB, but expect a few other episodes before it hits! Those system specific episodes really take some time.
If you get file type error, it's because the rom size must be increased a little until it reaches a size that matches a real cartridge size. In other words, you can't run a trimmed rom on the Super UFO.
Wow. Once again you guys put out something absolutely amazing, and you've made my decision making process a lot easier when it comes to SNES/SFC translations.
I got this cart when it first came out. I just wanted a cheep ever drive like cart but damn the functions on this cart I did not know of when I first obtained this is just incredible
I have been telling people for years, this cart isn't bad! It's just needing a little fiddling. Thank you for helping grow the SUPER UFO Pro 8 Community!
Nice overview, very thorough! This would be great as a cheap general utility flash cart, but the one-game saving and 8-character filenames are dealbreakers for me. The ROM dumping features are cool though!
Thank you so much for this video. I've been wanting to play some SFC games for a long while now and this is a great way to do it. I followed your instructions here and everything is working great. Much appreciated!
I bought one of these many years back now, for the price it does a good job. I eventually went to the sd2snes, but the superufo8 is good for those on a strict budget. Some really useful info on how to use this two, loads of stuff I had no idea about! Especially with the dumping of ROMS using this device. Many thanks for that!
I had problems with games that have anti-piracy devices. Megaman X for example, if you get the dash boot, the boot disappears in the other stages and sometimes goes back to the introductory stage
Wish this video was around a few months ago when I got back into retro hard-ware gaming and bought the Super UFO intitally before returning it and getting a Everdrive. It was a neat flashcart, but as they said it very poorly documented and a lot of the messages I seen out there tried to say it was a knockoff that was best return. Very happy with my SD2SNES I have, but UFO wasn't a bad flashcart too. Glad to see Try likes this a lot.
Great review. Maybe I have been too hard on the Super UFO through the years. It does appear to have few nice tricks up its sleeve. It seems like more of a tool suite than a Super EverDrive/SD2SNES competitor though.
+SmokeMonster [Try4ce] Heh, I did come across a post of yours from some years back (pre-SD2SNES, I believe), so I did wonder what you might think if you saw this video! It does indeed fail (price aside) if you look at it strictly as an alternative to Super EverDrive/SD2SNES, but it certainly has its uses if you approach it with the right mindset. It's certainly a flawed device, but I find myself strangely charmed by it.
Yes, your review definitely changed how I feel about it. Now that I'm thinking of it as a $60 lock-on cart/hardware tool suite, it really seems like a great value with a lot of useful applications. I'd pay $60 for just the cart save-transfer feature alone, so everything else it does would be a bonus. I'll have to track one down, and start backing up all of my carts' old saves :)
I see lots of potential in this type of thing. I'd love to see an updated version of this with better support, new features, and some more general ironing out. Thanks for sharing info on this strange new device!
I remember when growing up one of my friends' dads had one of those Super Nintendo floppy disk ROM dumpers and we thought it was the most amazing thing in the world to have an entire library of SNES games on floppy disks!
FYI to everyone! I'm running translation patches on my japanese Dragon Quest III, Tales of Phantasia, and Star Ocean cartridges on my Retro Freak console. While it is more expensive than a Retron 5, I think it is still a great option none the less if you want to play these games with translation patches.
How did you managed to run Dragon Quest III? What happens to me is that the file always ends up surpassing the 32mbits limit after translating it and does not start up.
regarding the dsp1 chip cross game compatability. mariokart used hirom version of dsp1, pilotwings used lorom. I made a list a while ago if you're interested. most dsp1 games used hirom, if you check out some of the japanese only DSP games you will have the most success using a copy of mariokart. for example I purchased a super air diver cart for my super famicom to be able to play super mariokart on it, since this was the cheapest japanese dsp1 game i could find. I do have a 1chip PAL snes with the original mariokart, but the scanlines on 240p compared to 276p are much nicer and the screen on the pvm is filled out more. If you like megaman there's a fun hack floating around called megaman x Hardtype. Brutal but fun hack based on X where your lifecounter is replaced by a death counter. have fun trying to get through the introduction stage ;). I soon will try the x3 zero hack wich seems interesting aswell.
Probably the best informative video on this device. The UFO was originally seen as a competitor to the Super Everdrives and SD2SNES but I think it's actually a different tool. I still have both. Anybody else notice the price of the UFO went up to at least double these past few months?! It used to be about $45!!!
Is there a list that shows which games are (or aren't, which would probably be shorter) compatible with the SUFO8? I'd be very interested in playing Tengai Makyou Zero in English when it becomes available - but it has a special chip for data decompression. I'd be curious to see if that cart works with the SUFO8. However, the eventual ROM+patch size might also be incompatible... Sorry if this question was answered in the comments already!
+ericbazinga [Try4ce] That is what the SD2SNES does. In theory it is hoped it will one day be configured to support Super FX and SA-1, but it has not yet happened.
+ericbazinga [Try4ce] I assume it's mainly because of how complex they are to reverse engineer, but I have no idea, I am not too up to date on that scene.
Well, damn! Your video about Everdrives made me finally decide that Everdrives weren’t for me, and this video just convinced me that the UFO 8 *is!* Mine’s on my way and I can’t wait!
Oh wow, i wasn't expecting Super Ufo Pro 8 to be covered by you guys, considering there are better (and much more expensive) options as far as flashcarts go. I have one and it served me well, haven't delved into all it can do yet, this video will be very helpful!
For sure! I'm a big fan of flashcarts for many reasons, your in-depth coverage of them helps me decide which ones to pick, I'm still missing a 64 and a turbografx one. I'd love to see the TG16/PC Engine options covered someday, keep it up!
+Technique San [Try4ce] 64 Drive will be coming in a future episode. I've heard about some PCE options lately that have me interested. That's what I'd like to look into next if I can.
Very nice video and all the work you have done on this :) Now a understand how my own Super UFO Pro 8 works. I did give me problems before and a stop using it. But that will change and a will use it properly again :) Thank you!
Another cool thing I used to do with "unlimited SRAM" saving was to save tons of animations and pictures for Mario paint and my Super Mario Kart ghost races. I Still have race replies of myself playing from 1992. :)
You can extract a DSP-1 chip from a donor cart and place it in the Super Everdrive. As long as you have the right version, that is. Mario Kart and Pilotwings works like a charm.
An episode I'd like to see from you is one (or multiple if needed) about clone consoles. Like the Retron line of consoles, the Retro Duo/Trio ones, Super Nico Fami, Pound Challenger, GamerzTek line of consoles etc. I know, you are all about RGB master class and so on, but those mods or FPGA clones are really expensive, so a 'budget clones' episode could really be interesting for viewers on a budget.
Around 3:44 you mention the Super UFO won't boot up with an NTSC cart on top. Did you mean in general or if you're trying to run a PAL ROM? I was hoping I could use this to back up saves on all my battery-backed games, which are all North American NTSC.
+PersistentNitrogen [Try4ce] I'm borrowing a PAL console, which did not boot up when I had an NTSC cart on top of the UFO. It would boot with no cart, or PAL carts. I'm not sure if there might be a workaround, but yeah, unfortunately that does make it seem difficult to back up NTSC ROMs through a PAL console. You can play the ROMs if they were already on the card though.
Thanks. Actually I think I was unclear - I have an North American NTSC SNES and NTSC games, and just wanted to make sure the Super UFO would be able to boot with the cart attached.
Ok thanks, and thanks for doing a video on this tool! The save backup feature is HUGE. I haven't had any carts' batteries go bad yet, but in anticipation of that day, I've been looking for a long time for a way to be able to replace the battery WITHOUT permanently losing the saves on the cart. If this device can read/write saves, I think that's how I do it - backup -> replace battery -> restore. Now to find some options for NES, GB, and GBA...
There is a guy by the name of Dr Abrasive who developed a USB loader for the Sega Saturn. He said he would make it available to buy but I haven't heard anything about it for a while. You should get in touch with him.
Neat! If I still had a SNES I'd love one. Software preservation is neat. I do have a copy of SF Tetris on my desk I bought for a friend. Would be super neat to try dumping it.
This video convinced me to purchase this cart instead of an everdrive. Good to know that there are more people that wants to have the original SFC cart but play a translated rom. I do this because of games that weren't released over in south america or are just too expensive like MMX2 or Chrono trigger(man, 15 bucks CIB against 150-200)
I have one of these and think they may be a way,not tested yet, it's just an idea. I have been looking into the eprom side of the SNES and noticed some people using software to alter the pin layout of the ROMs and I gathered in theory if I had Mario kart and pilot wings for example, program both ROMs to use Mario karts pin layout, in theory may be able to allow pilot wings with Mario kart in the super UFO, I think that's the only thing stopping 1 game for all the special chips out their, ROMs are programmed to use different pins
I have been inspired to purchase this, this is exactly what i needed, a utility that can rip and act as a flash cart. now if only there was one for nes
Dumping NES carts involves knowing the mappers, and there are detailed lists out there. You would need a CopyNES or the Analogue NT Mini which has a copynes implementation as well.
As verified by a different user on RUclips, you can also use Japanese X3 to play US X2. It works with both. I was told that this is because there was an update to the Cx4 between the Japanese and US release of X2. This makes me wonder if the US X2 can play X3.
+Emmett Turner [Try4ce] I demonstrated Japanese X3 playing US X2 and it did not work for me. Maybe a ROM hack would make it possible, but it did not work normally.
You're right. It was the comments section on this video where I read that: LxBkiKkM40Q It doesn't seem that the person knows what he/she is talking about. Also, Guntz on NintendoAge confirmed that you could play Megaman X3 with Rockman X3. I suspect that disabling the ROM chip on either will allow them to boot the other, much like using different boot carts on an N64 backup unit. I yanked the ROM chip from WCW vs nWo Revenge so that I could use it as a 6102 SRAM boot cartridge.
Thanks a lot for explaining the UFO SRAM Tool, previous to this video I was using Ucon64 to pad out the emulator SRM files for the UFO by "ucon64.exe --pad -ufos ROMNAME.SRM" which was a longer process. Good to know there is an easier method now. Thanks heaps mate.
Wow, I have completely blown off flash carts for purist reasons butI'm liking the sound of this already. I almost got a Retron 5 for the english patches to original japanese carts but this seems much better
Agreed. For me, I can finally play Mega man X2 and X3 in English, on original Snes hardware, and without breaking bank(Just need to wait for my import copies).
Are there any other alternatives other than the UFO and the Retron 5 that allows the use of the carts for the IPS language patching files? Looking for the most compatibility and it looks like the Retron 5 is the way to go.
+TheDolanar [Try4ce] We're definitely going to look at others for other systems, but of course the RetroN 5 would be cheaper than others for all your systems. Just depends on what you want to do with it if the extra money and effort makes a difference to you.
Could you guys dump the firmware of Super UFO Pro 8? I need FW 9.0 because FW 9.2A seems to have problems. It's important. I can't find FW 9.0 anywhere
I can confirm that Wii VC to emulator compatible save STATES at least are compatible. I was in the middle of Mario LotSS on Wii until it's video out got messed up so now I'm continuing from where I left off in HD on my Nvidia SHIELD TV!
The thing about headers is that a few system emulators still require them. The NES and Lynx will not run on my Raspberry Pi without headered ROMs, for example. Since you are running on actual hardware, of course you wouldn't need headers. But on an emulator, you may still need them depending on your emulator. But for the best dumps of unheadered ROMs for carts you don't own, the best source for them are the No-Intro sets. They are easy enough to get your hands on with a simple Google search and no torrenting is required, which is nice due to Comcast's fuckery.
Yes! you can use the japanese carts to play english roms! I think this flashcart might be worth a pickup as it could play some of the expensive games with special chips for less $$$.
6:28 - You know you can get to the Super Game Boy 1 borders on the SGB2, right? Just select the to the black border and press L L L L R. You'll hear a chime and now when you go back into the menu, the original borders will be there.

This is definitely on my list of things to get for my collection now. Thank you so much for this informative vid! All of your videos are awesome!
I remember when growing up one of my friends' dads had one of those Super Nintendo floppy disk ROM dumpers and we thought it was the most amazing thing in the world to have an entire library of SNES games on floppy disks!
Yessss new MLIG makes everything better.
This. I guess I'm late to the party here but I should have gotten one of these when I first heard of the thing.
If those SNES cartridges were any cleaner they'd look like CGI. ;)
Nice job!
What if a SNES flashcart used an FPGA chip (a chip that mimics other chips) to replicate whatever special chips are necessary?
+ericbazinga [Try4ce] That is what the SD2SNES does. In theory it is hoped it will one day be configured to support Super FX and SA-1, but it has not yet happened.
My Life in Gaming Why is that? Lack of documentation on how those chips work, or just nobody available to program it?
+ericbazinga [Try4ce] I assume it's mainly because of how complex they are to reverse engineer, but I have no idea, I am not too up to date on that scene.
The implementation of each chip needs to fit on the FPGA as well.
why not use software emulation then?
Well, damn! Your video about Everdrives made me finally decide that Everdrives weren’t for me, and this video just convinced me that the UFO 8 *is!*
Mine’s on my way and I can’t wait!
Oh wow, i wasn't expecting Super Ufo Pro 8 to be covered by you guys, considering there are better (and much more expensive) options as far as flashcarts go. I have one and it served me well, haven't delved into all it can do yet, this video will be very helpful!
+Technique San [Try4ce] I just think it's interesting. We have wanted to do videos on several "EverDrive Alternatives."
When is the MLIG blu ray coming out? :)
Awesome video guys. I'm not as heavy into the SNES as other consoles, but this sounds like it's a must own for me.
I'd love to see an episode covering that professional looking VCR under Try's TV.
Tombi on a PSP... that was something like two seconds in the intro, but it was great.
One of the best PS1 games for sure.
Nothings better than watching good dumps while I'm having a bad dump.
You guys are champs for tackling this kind of stuff.
i already own a SD2SNES but this was very interesting. can't wait for you to cover more flashcarts!
Very nice video and all the work you have done on this :) Now a understand how my own Super UFO Pro 8 works. I did give me problems before and a stop using it. But that will change and a will use it properly again :) Thank you!
Loved the episode! My interest is piqued at only $60...
+PersistentNitrogen [Try4ce] Oh OK gotcha. I'm still not positive, but I feel like it would.
Neat! I really like the sram transfer to original carts ... I already have the SD2SNES, but this would be cool to backup my saves
Just ordered one. It serves another purpose for me. play snes games on a super famicom
Where did you find it plz?
Glad you guys aren't sucked into the everdrive cult and can appreciate other flashcart, unlike a few other channels
man! this intro music is so great!!!
The point of the cart on top is so you can play romhacks. All my special chip rom hacks work fine but you need to expand the roms to a larger size.
There is a guy by the name of Dr Abrasive who developed a USB loader for the Sega Saturn. He said he would make it available to buy but I haven't heard anything about it for a while. You should get in touch with him.
artemio is the fucking master
Abel Velasco vine buscado este comentario jajaja
Abel Velasco Exacto!
Neat! If I still had a SNES I'd love one. Software preservation is neat. I do have a copy of SF Tetris on my desk I bought for a friend. Would be super neat to try dumping it.
4:14 Perhaps you should add a notation to this part that Super FX and SA-1 became possible on the SD2SNES in 2018.
RUclips got rid of annotations years ago sadly
And it can now emulate the S-DD1.
Someone knows how to deal with the Dragon Quest III problem? After translating it, it always ends up bigger than 32mbits and it doesn't work.
Great production value, as always!
This video convinced me to purchase this cart instead of an everdrive. Good to know that there are more people that wants to have the original SFC cart but play a translated rom. I do this because of games that weren't released over in south america or are just too expensive like MMX2 or Chrono trigger(man, 15 bucks CIB against 150-200)
Fan translations are often much better though.
I was able to play Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island with the cart on top, but I couldn't get it to cross to get Doom to work. :[
Okay, judging from the background in Try's parts of the videos, I think it's time for a new set-up tour. I need that beautiful crt action.
Artemio Urbina interesting, where can I get one of these?
The copynes: www.retrousb.com/product_info.php?products_id=36
The Analogue Nt MIni: www.analogue.co/pages/nt-mini
thanks
Even with the save dumping feature you'll have easier and better results with the retron 5 which does way more systems.
You can dump gameboy games with a n64 flashcart and a transfer pak. Also you can transfer to and from the cartridge save files.
+Chowder908 [Try4ce] Good to know! I will be testing out some more of the functions for the 64 Drive soon.
***** you need a special homebrew rom tho. I think it's called libgbpak.
I think the different cheat codes formats(game genie, xterminator, codebreaker, etc...) are at GSHI.org.
Great video guys! Might pick this one up!
excellent video as always.
and I love the animation and sounds ❤️👍
I think this flashcart might be worth a pickup as it could play some of the expensive games with special chips for less $$$.
would be nice to find one at MSRP. currently only ebay has a few at a huge markup.
