Very informative on the PC ENGINE. I know literally nothing about the system and may start collecting for it someday so this is nice to hear although I will have to watch this video several times because I don't know anything about files and such. It's a good thing that you made the instructions in this episode so crystal clear. Thank you.

I wish the other flash carts put time into making their menus look that good. I know it's secondary to functionality, but it's really nice when you compare it to a plain black screen with white text.
Omg I've learned so much with your channel. Yes it was very costly but so worth it. lol I have a n64 ultra hdmi kit on the way. But most interesting is that I have all my systems now modify and all RGB modified like snes, turbo duo rx and my nes by kevtris and the win mod. Watching your channel has changed my gaming collection to a whole new level. I've got the framemeister and the hydra 8 selecter. Omg your channel seems to be a god sent on retro gaming makeovers. But!!! I just purchased a Atari jaguar and I'd love to see how to get the best video for it and the 3do and I think I'm completely done. Thank you guys so much!!! I love when people come over and don't know what the framemeister is and when then know even what a scary cable is. I always say my life in gaming" change my life".!!
I absolutely love my Mega SD. I was an SNES kid, but my brother and I bought a Genesis model 2 after a summer of yard work to save money. We never had many games for it, maybe 4 total, but it expanded what we could rent from Blockbuster. Then our genesis sat in a box in our parents' house for about 20 years. Then, last summer (2019) I asked my brother if I could have it and he was fine with it, so I took it to my house, bough some component cables from HD Retrovision, and got a Mega SD. It won't be long before I put in more time on that old model 2 than I did as a kid. I have never owned a PC engine. I've never even played a real one. I had one friend as a kid who briefly owned a TurboGrafx 16, but promptly sold it to buy an SNES when that came out. I was well in my 30s the first time I ever played a PC Engine game, and that was on my Japanese Retro Freak clone console that will play PC Engine games off real Hu Cards or an SD Card and output 720p over HDMI. It's compatible with real controllers too, but I don't own any. The glaring flaw with the Retro Freak's PC Engine emulation is that there is absolutely no way to play any CD based games (though it does play the, what? 5? 6? SuperGrafx games). While you can get a full Sega Genesis experience without any of the Sega CD games, the CD titles for the PC Engine are where that console really shined. Arguably, most of the best PC Engine games were on CDs. I can emulate them on my PC, but I'd prefer real hardware. After buying my Mega SD, and enjoying the Sega CD for the first time, I learned about the Super SD System 3. Again, I don't own a PC Engine, but I've seen for sale on Japanese auction sites going for around $60. If I'm going to pay $300 for a Super SD System 3, an extra $60 for a PC Engine is a no brainer. And you're arguably getting a lot more with the Super SD System 3 than with the Mega SD since the CD games are the main draw of the PC Engine library. And that it will work with the HD Retrovision component cables I already bought for my Genesis (and use with my Saturn) makes this a purchase I'm seriously considering making. At the moment of writing this, Terraonion is sold out of Super SD System 3s, but I hope this is temporary. Maybe they are making a new batch that solves those audio and loading issues mentioned in this video.
It's probably a safe bet that the Sega/Mega CD is Terraonion's next project. I really hope so, anyway. I love my SSDS3 and it can only get better as time goes on.
I emphatically disagree. It's a unique product made by a tiny outfit and *far* cheaper to buy than the equivalent hardware it replicates - and that's before you spend the time / money on necessary mods and recapping it all. It's still a bargain even if current versions may need a little tinkering to get their audio and RGB video optimal - and don't forget that it is a high end product made for a long dead vintage console. Multinational electronics corporations would never in a trillion years green light production of a device like this, a device made for a group of enthusiasts who fully understand that its production will never yield large economies of scale for the manufacturer as well as being a fundamentally risky endevour.
Very cool! This is definitely a nice upgrade for the Turbo, even with the kinks still needing ironing out. Looks like it was a bit of a rushed launch that they're thankfully working to make good on.
Ah after I RGB modded, region switch modded, recapped, and jailbar fixxed my Turbo Duo to do everything (coupled with an Krikkz Everdrive for those $$$ Hu cards). If I saw this ahead of time Id be so much more excited. Still...I have an American TG16 that I would like to try this on just for. Voultar put together a quick chip solution to help fix some issues with this and test, so in the near future I will put it through the ringers. Still, excellent video guys as usual and TerraOnion, you're a genius!
YES! I would love one for my genesis. There's a lot of sega cd games i would love to play. but the OG hardware is far too expensive. Also, too many of the cd drives have hardware issues. Dead motors, dead optical readers, dead components.
That's probably difficult considering the sega cd also had chips inside of it to help with things like scaling and rotation. In comparison, the PC Engine cd is literally just a cd rom drive.

This is actually really cool. I really like that Coury is really informative about the topic and keeping his personal opinion out of it. Try (in the game boy episode) was really annoying about the revo k101. Saying the screen wasn’t high quality. I bet he just didn’t like t cause it wasn’t the original
They do... GDEmu and USB-GDRom. I went USB-GDROM. Also removed one of the regulators on the power supply (found it on a reddit forum) and it reduced the extra heat that would have been voltage for the GD motor.
If they could make it 100% solid state, then it would last forever. Imagine it just keeping cool without fans, woaah. I also have the USB-GDROM and it's awesome; the guy who makes it is, however, not so awesome.
Thank you for that last line!! I hope TerraOnion watches this great feature you guys put together, and decide to take that last request on themselves. :)
That part where he had to find out there was an audio problem not by hearing it, but by viewing a waveform really had me shaking my head. Not for me, but def a cool product.
Having one for the Sega CD would be amazing. I've been wanting to get a Sega CD for my Genesis, but most listings on eBay always are sold with a Genesis attatched. Even if they are sold as just the CD Unit, they go for a lot. And ripping the ROMs off of a CD isn't too hard. Although getting the BIOS legally is difficult.
This will be a nice addition to my Phoebe-equipped Saturn and USB-GDROM-equipped Dreamcast. Definitely echo the sentiment at the end of the video - must-have for Sega CD! The video problems I can work around. I already have the C-sync Genesis 2 cable from Retro Access, and then my VA4 Genesis 2 came with another one. So I have the spare just sitting around.
This’ll make having a PC Engine worthwhile. I am thinking about buying a PC Engine (not TurboGrafx-16!) and investing into a Super SD System because I want to be able to play everything I’ve ever wanted.
Had to order one. Hopefully they can fix that audio issue via firmware update. Looking forward to using this with one of my PC engines and it will keep me from killing my cdrom drive over time. Were getting some very cool stuff lately to help our retro consoles last another 20-30 years or more.
That would be awesome, but think of how much it could cost. I love the FPGA approach for preserving old consoles and games, but I am worried about how pricey some systems can get. Look at the Nt mini.
The Nt Mini's price is mostly due to its fancy aluminum case, not the FPGA. The Super Nt @ $189 USD is a more realistic benchmark for what an FPGA Genesis might cost. CD support is still a huge question mark with any FPGA Genesis remake, though.
[Coury] Thats what I'm doing as well. There was a bit of speculation going around at first that noise issue manifested differently on different consoles. I did a side by side comparison between a PC Engine, TG-16 and SuperGrafx, and while the noise was the same, I felt that the SuperGrafx was a touch sharper.
My Life in Gaming Maybe I got lucky with my SuperGrafx. Lol. Seriously though, I have zero issues with mine. Bought it about a year ago and it’s in flawless condition. Maybe previous owner got it recapped? Not sure but boy am I glad I bought it. Paid $250 shipped so not too shabby. Thanks for replying, love the videos. Keep up the great work guys!!!
Glad to have it ! Indeed ... (i have 1st board on the case , but i don't mind because lord Voultar have a solution for improve the video quality on RGB signal of this beauty) . Peace !
It would be so cute to have a tiny model 1 style Sega CD device like this that fit onto the model 2 Genesis. As far as I've read the CD attachment is more than a standard add on, like it is for PCE or Jaguar. It seems it is almost an entire console to itself.
Great information and video as usual. This device is cool but PC Engine / SuprGrafx CD ROM emulation is so good across the board (as far as my experience goes - including arcade card games like Saphire) that i'm perfectly happy with that, even on cheap android based devices with HDMI out it works like a dream and there's none of those video noise issues. This is only the view of someone who's not desperate to own PC Engine hardware of course.
Take my like... That's an amazing device... Can you answer some questions? 1. The Hu-Card with Populous is a special game because it have aditional RAM into its Hu-Card. Some emulators and flash carts don't support this game because the lack of support of the aditional RAM used in this game. The Super SD System 3 offer proper support to play Populous flawless, or it shows issues too? 2. Can you upload your .BUP files with your saves, as shown at 12:08? I want to check the save format of the Super SD System 3...
I'm surprised your Cosmo Fantasy was that slow. I used that game to adjust my laser, and didn't experience that much delay unless it wasn't calibrated correctly. Granted, the SSDS3 can be argued to be a worthwhile investment so you don't have to adjust lasers, but I think it's time for a replacement. Good news, they're still available new, and cheap!
I really like what this foreshadows for the future of retro gaming preservation, but I can't swallow that price when it's as much as an authentic Turbo Duo.
didnt know there was still so many issues. hopefully all can be ironed out with firmware updates. I may way awhile more before getting this addon for the reasons stated in this video.
I had one of these on my to-buy list for my TG16 as I'm getting everything set up, but decided to go with a recapped RGB modded Duo with an Everdrive instead. Meant I had to go buy CDRs for the first time in years, though.
There’s a new Revision B model out that fixes some audio and video issues but also introduces sync problems that make it incompatible with hd retrovision and composite video. Any plans to do an update review of the new model?
I recently bought one of these mod units for my TurboGrafx-16. After several tests and fidgeting around, I just couldn't get it to work. On the outside, everything seemed fine. The console turned on with no issue, and the light on the side of the SSDS3 was working. Upon further inspection, however, it seems the SSDS3, when inserted, bends some of the contacts in the console's expansion port. Whether this is because the pins are flat out not making it into the contacts of the SSDS3, or these pins are supposed to bend is unknown to me. After carefully straightening the pins in the expansion port with a flat head, and numerous attempts, the most I could ever get out of the mod unit was a blank white screen. Considering how few people actually own the SSDS3, I wouldn't be surprised if my problem is unique. Is there something I'm missing here? Could my micro SD card have anything to do with this problem? Is the SSDS3 incompatible with the TurboGrafx-16? I'm really at a loss here, and I especially want to enjoy this unit. Hopefully you guys, or someone out there can see this and help me out. Thanks.
Have the issues been fixed in the latest revision? I've seen a couple of Reddit threads and message forum threads but none are up to date to November 2019 on the issues. It's really not something I can justify dropping three bills on if it's not super clear.
Have they fixed the sound issues with CD games yet? Also, are you guys planning on doing a full RGB video on the PC Engine? There's so many different models that it gets overwhelming.
[Try4ce] My PC Engine Interface Unit mod uses a bigger DIN. I don't know if your SCART is the right size or wiring for it. It's possible, but I don't know.
1. I am actually thinking spending some cash on this. How is the RGB. im hearing some lacking quality. is that correct? I dought Ill even care. They really should of made it a hdmi adapter and it upscales. IDK really i got a framemeister. This thing seems to be the one im going for since it plays the cd games better and better loading times and plays the regular games so no need for a everdrive. any side effect if the system is already rgb modded for the turbo graphics? Do i still need a regan mod? 2. I been reading there coming out more devices that plays the games. one that plays the cd games from the hue card slot somehow. I may see how that roles out. 3. I am hearing that the turbo graphics or pc engine don't need recapping right. I don't have the know how in soldering or know anyone who will do it for a reasonable price.. but the duo does need all this stuff done to it like recap and other mod work. 4. I was told by a couple of guys to get a fully modded duo. IDK. i kinda don't want to collect. and ripping the cd games i hear is a pain and ill still need a everdrive. 5. Can someone help me out and answer my questions.
A year old video, so maybe I won't get a reply. Anyway, according to Stone Age Gamer, the SSDS3's buzzing noise issue is a problem caused by running it through a Framemeister with RGB cables, not a flaw in the product. Can anyone with experience confirm? I don't have a Framemeister (I'll be using a Retro Tink 2X). I see a lot of people complaining about this buzzing noise on CD games, but if it really is a Framemeister issue and not an issue with the SSDS3, I'll get one right away.
Bang for you're buck if you don't want to collect for a pce.Since it's all in one and you can use a pce,coregrafx,TG16 with it.Heck for myself thinking of selling off a console to buy a SSDS3.
True, by the time you get like, a handful of PCE games you've already spent more than the cash you'd need to get one of these... Also, it supports the Arcade Card so that's even better!
Another awesome video - thanks! So, are we all calling it 'Vintage Gaming' now? I guess 'retro gaming' did have kind of a trashy feel to it, 'vintage' kind of classes it up! ;) Regarding the SSS 3 - had my eye on this one for a while, but I'm going to wait for it to land at Stoneage Gamer first. I did that with the NeoSD and had no regrets. It's easier than trying to deal with all of the bank transfer issues Terra Onion has being overseas, and for some reason they don't want to offer a PayPal option to ease the stress for customers. In this particular case waiting was even more beneficial, as they still seem to be ironing out some fairly impactful hardware and firmware issues...
[Coury] Yeah, I kinda made a conscious decision to start referring it to "vintage" instead of "retro" because I felt it was more accurate. Retro is more about new stuff made to look old, and vintage is classy old stuff.
Coury - Fair enough. The way I see it, if you guys decide you want to tweak the name of the scene/hobby, so be it. You've earned that type of clout! Maybe I got lucky with my SuperGrafx.
Which emulators for Windows?
I like it how the composite lead has a load of dust on the connector. lol.
Interesting stuff!
That's an interesting audio problem. It looks like there's too much gain, resulting in clipping.
one year later, your prayers for a sega cd solution were answered!
I want to check the save format of the Super SD System 3...
maybe they will 'pay' attention to you if you ask this question in a superchat on one of their live streams where they dance for cash ;)
> Can someone get on making something like this for the Sega CD?
YES PLEASE!
Great episode guys!
TerraOnion should really implement ALL of Voultar's recommendations. They'd have a much better product if they did.
I really like what this foreshadows for the future of retro gaming preservation, but I can't swallow that price when it's as much as an authentic Turbo Duo.
5:48 Soldering Aaron
didnt know there was still so many issues. hopefully all can be ironed out with firmware updates. I may way awhile more before getting this addon for the reasons stated in this video.
2:34 No extra external power adapters, works on the console's power - sega 32x and CD are triggered.
But the CDX only nods approvingly.
7:45 I've been dying to figure out what that song is, I've heard it in several videos you guys have made.
[Coury] Its from Gradius 2 on the PCE CD-ROM
@@mylifeingaming Thanks dude, you're awesome!
Wow! DIdn't know this existed. Very cool.
I kept noticing a Saturn RAM cart beside your SuperGrafx and it kept throwing me off lol
GRACIAS POR LOS VIDEOS .. SON LO MAXIMOOOO
I had one of these on my to-buy list for my TG16 as I'm getting everything set up, but decided to go with a recapped RGB modded Duo with an Everdrive instead. Meant I had to go buy CDRs for the first time in years, though.
Dustin Carter I’m currently using the same setup with a Framemeister and don’t see enough reasons to move to using an SSD instead.
I am a simple man, I see new video I watch.
What a time to be alive!
I ordered mine after watching a livestream Voultar did. Yeah, I feel in love with it. They are still making v2s so my order is delayed :(
Excellent video. Bravo.
I'm leaning towards waiting for an all FPGA solution.
The jailbars (without mod), and audio noise through CDROM games would probably bug me.
You can build a MiSTer FPGA for that price. It does all that plus a huge amount of other systems.
Thanks 🙏 really enjoyed!
I love your intro music.
There’s a new Revision B model out that fixes some audio and video issues but also introduces sync problems that make it incompatible with hd retrovision and composite video. Any plans to do an update review of the new model?
[Coury] Yep, expect an updated video that will cover the new revision as well as the mods to the old revision to bring them in line with each other.
@@mylifeingaming When are you going to do that video on the new revision?
What's the song starting at 3:44 ?

Damn, send me a unit...
The thing goes for $300.
Thanks.
I hope they fix some of those issues regarding the CD games' hiss. It can be kind of grating after a while.
Have the issues been fixed in the latest revision? I've seen a couple of Reddit threads and message forum threads but none are up to date to November 2019 on the issues. It's really not something I can justify dropping three bills on if it's not super clear.
Yep. All the issues are now fixed.
Would you guys be interested in a dolphin Dev kit or doing a review on it? I have one I found a while back at a Farmers market
[Coury} that could be pretty cool! shoot us an email at mylifeinvideogames@gmail.com to work something out!
Are you guys thinking of an original xbox video? Theres some interesting options available for it now, even dedicated HDMI cables.
WHAT... ARE THOSE ULTRA-COOL LOOKING SPACESHIP SHOOTER GAMES AT 6:05 AND 6:25 ?!?!
1st one is Blazing Lasers, 2nd is Rtype
Did that audio ever get fixed for CD games??
[Try4ce] Yeah a lot of changes have been made.
Analogue MUST incorporate a similar FPGA CD2SD for their Mega NT. You guys know them and Horton, make it happen!!!
MLiG did it again, now I’m going to be hunting down a SuperGrafx, thanks guys lol.
I'm definitely not sensitive to video quality issues. I can't see a single one of the issues you addressed here. I guess I'm lucky?
I can definitely tell the difference in audio though
Have they fixed the sound issues with CD games yet?
Also, are you guys planning on doing a full RGB video on the PC Engine? There's so many different models that it gets overwhelming.
[Try4ce] Yep, we are planning one! Not positive when it will release, but it's fairly high in the queue.
The cd audio issue is fixed
Looks promising but I will have to wait for most of those issues to be resolved before I decide to get one in place of my current setup.
I have a modded TG16. Is there any way to use my normal SCART cable and pull audio from the super system sd 3 for CD games?
From 15:58 to 16:02 is like watching Vinesauce corruptions, lol
I want this!
Thanks again for all of the excellent and informative videos. I've spent countless hours of free entertainment in front of the computer thanks to the hard work you guys have poured in over the years...
