Now it appears that you will have to stop and change to a low speed train to access those cities negating the whole effect. Given that people don't travel anything like as much post covid the money should be spent on reconnecting towns and regions with railways that the beeching cuts destroyed.

Yes HS2 is a railway from nowhere to nowhere. No HS1 connection to and from the continent, no connection to central London, no levelling up, no freeing up capacity elsewhere, no so-called high speed - the branch off the delta junction into Birmingham will, if ever it is completed, be horribly unpleasant because of steep gradients on a bend in tunnel. Many matters unresolved - risk of bird strikes near Calvert, damage to the ecosystem by severing of a watercourse north-west of Greatworth and elsewhere, difficult conditions at Culworth, Wormleighton and Southam. The railway was conceived as a giant train set by an indulgent government to tinker around with; and this monstrosity is the fruit of their ill-conceived grandiosity

It was pure vanity project from the political class from the start. I think partly done to try and appear "green"(that old agenda) and also politicians love a big infrastructure project. First off - the type of high speed rail that was proposed was completely ill suited to Britain's geography - it's not like Spain, France or Japan where their systems were having to travel much longer distances and compete with air travel; the titling trains on the West Coast line showed that was about optimum for the UK. Another thing is that the money of would been better spent upgrading the regular network, and reinstating some old railway lines - as there are a lot of big towns around the country with no railway station(e. g. Chipping Norton, Oswestry, etc.)

360 kph 223 mph the running speed for HS2 would substantially lower the times between Euston London and Manchester. The better passenger train time for the journey is 2 hours 20 minutes. HSR as proposed should bring that down to under 1 hour 20 minutes or an hour less. The advertised time is 1 hour 11 minutes. Just running HS2 between Euston and Birmingham may save 1/2 hour. A capacity increase is needed for this route and it doesn't fit into the existing railway. As simply a capacity increase HS2 would make the marginal cost increase in capacity astronomical compared to other railways. HS2 may untangle all the major foreseen capacity bottlenecks on the route.
Most towns along HSR would not have access to major airports and for them HSR opens up fast travel. If extended to Glasgow the total distance would still only be about 420 miles well within the 500 mile range HSR can compete well with flying and likely about 2-1/2 hours travel time. All though the travel time for HSR is good and makes the trips viable the cost may prohibit most people from using it frequently.
A recent RUclips rail fan from the USA was trying to find out how much the French TGV ticket for 2nd class is being subsidized and his calculation was a US $50 for the ticket was paying for about $100 ticket if were traveling USA Amtrak. This was on the TGV which in class is closer to Amtrak's Acela that would be even more expensive than $100. Most people don't realize just how substantial the government support is for not just building HSR, but running HSR. HSR uses a lot of electricity. Most of the early adopters of HSR, such as Japan and France were planning on running it off of cheap nuclear electric power. When just running one full throttle locomotive of 11,000 hp that use 8.09 MW of electricity if it were 100% efficient which it is not. Most HSR trains have two locomotives running at about 1/2 throttle after accelerating up to speed.

So HS2 ends at Euston, with no connection to the Channel Train at King’s Cross.

So why does HS2 require connection to the Channel Tunnel trains at London St Pancras International ( Not Kings Cross), the people who will be travelling on HS2 will just want to go to London not Europe

The speed requirements in the design proposal triggered the straightening of the route and the total out of control finances. If it was an extra line using the normal high speed line parameters, it could have been rerouted around population centres and areas of natural beauty without all the tunnelling and embankments?

In the days of Steam (pre 1968) the former Great Central Railway was largely engineered for 100mph running across the bulk of it's length, and had a centralised Freight Yard in a place called Woodford Halse in the middle of the country. If the clowns in govt hadn't ripped that up you wouldn't have the need for HS2 to exist.
The need for speed between has been the selling point but everyone in the railway industry knows that in reality its the capacity of the system that was needed as both the West Coast and East Coast mainlines are in terms of services packed full. Trying to run freight up the trunk of the country is largely abandoned during the daytime and it does the major mileage overnight. In reality we have far to many passenger trains scheduled which cost far too much to travel on anyway. The entire railway network as it stands needs a major rethink in the post covid age and when we have gigabit fibre optic communications now a domestic product.
