Levelling up - a joke. Getting to Brum from London 20mins. faster - zero effect to anyone
Worse than that. Getting from 3 miles out Central Brum to the outskirts of London 15 minutes faster than you could get from Euston (zone 1) to new street (central Brum).
what about the tens of thousand of working class people working on the project on really good wages i take it your middle class and don't care about taking jobs from us working class you muggy little ****
Well actually it is 40 mins faster a positive effect for us Brummies
@@peterwilliamallen1063is it really?
@@gaddyfree1085 Yes it will be, at the moment from Birmingham New Street to London Euston it is approximately 90 mins some times120 mins, but when HS2 opens the average time from Birmingham Curzon Street to London Euston will be 50 mins each way a saving of 40 mins in each direction as per HS2 ltd
I'm pretty sure that HS2 will be completed at the cost of around £220 Billion for the UK Tax Pauper, then the political class will then limited the speed of the trains to 20mph via dictate. (not enough Grid Electricity to run the thing and to power the eVs in Londonistan for the Sovereign class)
That’s a good point. Faster trains but 20mph cars!! You couldn’t make this shit up.
I agree.
The lady on here has a need for speed so hopefully she's against these 20mph non debatable or debated crap.
Add to that as one person mentioned the environmental damage, ancient woodlands gone for ever, disgraceful. What is wrong with this country ? Does no one care anymore ?
Many of us care but the government do what they want. It's all decided long before it goes to public consultation. All these thing's are.
They have all lined their own pockets along the way.
Our country has become a laughing stock, we can't do anything right.
We can do many things right, we lead the world in financial services and London is probably the greatest capital city of the western world, civil engineering is old hat and it just takes brave people, like Rishi, to see the problem and kill it. HS2 is a labour waste of money, finally put to bed by the conservatives, because they actually have a spine, unlike SIR Kir Starmer.
Try living in Canada. We are F .... . 😢

All the technology and equipment that we have today and we always balls things up. The Victorians would be laughing at us.
The Irish navies built the railways & Its Infrastructure Not the Victorians!
@@Rockthecasbah3535 The Victorian period was from 1837-1901. The railway boom in Britain started in 1840 and continued for many years.
So they were built by the Victorians. They may have been Irish, English or even Chinese but collectively ALL Victorians. It’s an era-nothing to do with your place of birth :-)
My last project manager felt it was nothing more than a job creation scheme.
Civil servant money laundering scheme
The money on HS2 has been incredibly good. I met some Indian labourers who were putting up heras fencing for £200 a day. Would have been a minimum wage job on any other project.
Levelling up? The HS2 line cuts straight through Stoke on Trent, one of the most deprived and depressed cities in the UK ...and doesnt stop. I can understand it not stopping at every town and village, but it should at least stop at any major city it slices in half. I agree with Peter, it's a political vanity project and a waste of public funds.
Where I live on the Leicestershire/Warwickshire border, they have absolutely ruined the countryside, it is unrecognizable now , and animals have been displaced, it is so horrible what is happening, I have to wait at temporary traffic lights for 10 minutes twice a day, along with I guess a thousand more, and this HS2 is to save 20 minutes for some Banker type person traveling from London to Manchester, but I doubt it will ever get to Manchester, it is a total waste of time and money, the money should have been used on the NHS to save lives, and we should have reinstated some old lines that the idiot Beaching stopped in the 60s, he was another arse hole like we have now in power.
My taxes pay for that train line but I could never afford a ticket to ride on it.
HS2 was conceived pre covid as an elitist high speed line between major cities. Now it appears that you will have to stop and change to a low speed train to access those cities negating the whole effect. Given that people don't travel anything like as much post covid the money should be spent on reconnecting towns and regions with railways that the beeching cuts destroyed.
Apparently it was Ernest Marples who pushed for transport by road that ruined the railways now look where we are 20 mph Wales for a start
Im just a humble carpenter, if i turned up at your house to tell you to hang a door was £60 then when its finished £240, how long before ive no work?
Exactly! Your bang on sir!! There are a number of people making a hell of a lot of money out of the taxpayer. How can this continue to spiral out of monetary control ?
I worked out that the journey time between Liverpool and central London (via changing at Old Oak Common) is likely to be longer on HS2 than at present.
I agree it's very expensive and most of the people in this country won't use it
Most of the people in this country will be priced out of using it, with such a lot of money needed to be clawed back it can only be a premium Railway, if it ever gets finished.
Hs2 was part if the EU transport network. High speed might be useless for the UK but its essential for travel within the EU superstate
The average joe is not going to be able to afford to ride on this train, it will be a business mans toy.
If the Government doesn't complete the London to Birmingham leg, it will end up as a giant fly tipping site.
I understand the need to finish the Birmingham section … business people if the want to go to Manchester get on another plane …..planes don’t go to Birmingham by the time they have taken off it’s time to land !…. I can understand the merits of Peter Hitchins case
the Americans build their first transcontinental railroad of 1900 miles in six years so why has HS2 taken longer for 100 miles?
Blazing Saddles- Work Song
It was a complete disaster short sighted & criminal to close & rip up the Great Central Railway & Its mega Stations In Leicester Nottingham Sheffield & Manchester that could of been the HS2 of the day at a fraction of coast!
Typical London News Paper Editor, first HS2 is not going from no where to no where it is going from Birmingham City Center to London Euston at speeds of 225 mph and was built because the existing WCML is totally grid locked since privatisation and has been upgraded twice now and still the speed is only 125 MPH the speed that HST trains of 50 years ago did,the only way to do this with out years of upheaval and closures is build a new Railway HS2 and ground work is still going on North Of Birmingham where a new Bridge was f recently installed under the WCML to take it over the HS2 line
Ah yes, HS2, the enduring legacy of George Osborne's "Northern Powerhouse".
Can I remind everyone - that the Chinese offered to build HS2 cheaper and in time and the powers that be - decided to go with British companies - second rate country
It’s called Belt and Road initiative. Generally more democratic, politically stable, and economically developed countries have avoided the initiative.
I agree with Hitchens…
Especially with the Labour Party destroying grammar schools.
(Grammar schools were destroyed because John Prescott’s teenage girlfriend was a grammar school girl, and she took the mickey out of his spelling and grammar. So Prescott wanted to destroy the grammar school system.)
Amazing.
R
two jags had a girlfriend? Did he know that??
It was always going to Birmingham and stop it's the second city
Maybe if they’d started up north with proper railway lines we’d be in a lot better place. Unfortunately no government gets it right. They should ask the pros and that’s Japan. It just seems that they keep giving out load of cash to bottomless projects. Levelling up is a understatement. More like flatlining the whole economy.
The political parties BOTH SIDES are responsible for this - this is why we don't or can't stomach our political leaders. This country is being put out to pasture
Its a railway that only has a station at either end, it brings nothing to the hundreds of miles of countryside they destroy in between. i live near m25 and if i wanted to go to birmingham, its an hour in the car or get to acton to get on a train, not gonna happen, might be great for goods though idk.
As HS2 is no longer going into central London and central Birmingham it should be cancelled immediately. Divert the monies to the North East and South West.
Yes HS2 is a railway from nowhere to nowhere. No HS1 connection to and from the continent, no connection to central London, no levelling up, no freeing up capacity elsewhere, no so-called high speed - the branch off the delta junction into Birmingham will, if ever it is completed, be horribly unpleasant because of steep gradients on a bend in tunnel. Many matters unresolved - risk of bird strikes near Calvert, damage to the ecosystem by severing of a watercourse north-west of Greatworth and elsewhere, difficult conditions at Culworth, Wormleighton and Southam. The railway was conceived as a giant train set by an indulgent government to tinker around with; and this monstrosity is the fruit of their ill-conceived grandiosity
The ticket on high speed train, will be so expensive that you just have the money to take the bus.
Had HS2 been even remotely about "leveling up" then the first phase would have been built from Birmingham northwards. The whole project is a huge, pointless vanity project waste of tax money. Edit 'cause I couldn't remember the correct phrase.
Its a tunnel system Heading toward the lake district...wonder why?
We're in the Weimar period.
Large government projects always go over time and over budget, because there's no motivation to do it any quicker.. in fact there's plenty of motivation to keep it strung out as long as possible. The 'bottomless' public purse has been slapped onto the end of it, so the companies doing the work can take their sweet time while draining this big fat source of money, OUR MONEY!. They get PAID to take their time! Similarly to how money is wasted in the NHS
Scrap it!
We are useless, our glory days are well behind us, the sooner that is accepted the better, I've just travelled along a road which had temp traffic lights on for most of last summer, the sign declaring how long they would be there was changed as work overran, eventually a temporary surface was laid, then a permanent surface was laid, 3 or 4 sets of temporary lights have appeared and gone since then, earlier this week more lights as the road has been dug up again. The waste and incompetence in this country is epic, the only thing we excel at.
Its got to be finished You can't abandone a gapping line or building site In the open countryside from London to Birmingham! Its an embarrassment!
HS2 will go the same way as Concorde. It will only be used by the rich and famous until it loses its appeal. A total waste of money.
Soory to burst your bubble, but HS2 will be used by every one as it's train services will replace those running on the WCML at the moment
Well said Peter, this is another financial racket for the people involved ! Our rail system is a mess run by the unions.
The only thing HS2 will do is widen the commuter area for rich city bankers who want a country getaway. Improve the infrastructure the north if you want us to be a "powerhouse"
Joan Sims from the carry on films
Cameron and Osborne muppets
It was a Johnson vanity project. It is not needed, we can't afford it. If it ever gets completed, which is in serious doubt, it will be years late and billions over budget. Ordinary people won't be able to afford to use it. Scrap it now.
The easiest way to launder money is to fix something that isn't broken
I suggest people who say I don’t know where the money goes should go to Digbeth in Birmingham. The area being developed is vast and the tracks have to go in and around canals and roads.
3:00. A railway system fit for the 21st Century, which will probably be finished in time for the 22nd.
HS2 a totally corrupt idea
The people, socialism & environmentalism are strong , its neoliberal capitalism that is not.
Love to the people
Capitalism, the monarchy, the ruling class, the Tories……all need to be consigned to the dustbin of history
It was pure vanity project from the political class from the start. I think partly done to try and appear "green"(that old agenda) and also politicians love a big infrastructure project. First off - the type of high speed rail that was proposed was completely ill suited to Britain's geography - it's not like Spain, France or Japan where their systems were having to travel much longer distances and compete with air travel; the titling trains on the West Coast line showed that was about optimum for the UK. Another thing is that the money of would been better spent upgrading the regular network, and reinstating some old railway lines - as there are a lot of big towns around the country with no railway station(e. g. Chipping Norton, Oswestry, etc.)
The only way hs2 would of EVER levelled up, is if you had started in the NORTH and head South.
Then at least you would of had a rail network in the north, to match the south
And that’s just one of the reasons how I knew the Tories and their “levelling up” slogan was total bull💩!
And it according to Londoners is starting in the North by construction work starting in Birmingham, to Londoners anything North of Watford is North.
Expand the freight capacity for Chinese imports-madness
it's about freight, not commuter travel.
The whole thing is a joke leveling up theres places in the real north have not got a moterway yet and never will
Cancel HS2 as it will only run from old Oak Common to Birmingham - not from Euston. The 12 minutes this will 'save' is lost in changing from Euston to Old oak Common. INSANE.
It is an EU project. This programme is starving local and metro services in the provinces which could have systems comparable to London.
It will be running to Euston mate, OOC has not the capacity to terminate trains, and the local metro services are the rule of the respective metro mayor.
Now all the tory landoeners are paid off
Holy s...t, how much - a complete and utter waste of time costing an absolute fortune!
Branch lines! Yes Mr Hitchens - Branch lines!
peters spot on again
360 kph 223 mph the running speed for HS2 would substantially lower the times between Euston London and Manchester. The better passenger train time for the journey is 2 hours 20 minutes. HSR as proposed should bring that down to under 1 hour 20 minutes or an hour less. The advertised time is 1 hour 11 minutes. Just running HS2 between Euston and Birmingham may save 1/2 hour. A capacity increase is needed for this route and it doesn't fit into the existing railway. As simply a capacity increase HS2 would make the marginal cost increase in capacity astronomical compared to other railways. HS2 may untangle all the major foreseen capacity bottlenecks on the route.
Most towns along HSR would not have access to major airports and for them HSR opens up fast travel. If extended to Glasgow the total distance would still only be about 420 miles well within the 500 mile range HSR can compete well with flying and likely about 2-1/2 hours travel time. All though the travel time for HSR is good and makes the trips viable the cost may prohibit most people from using it frequently.
A recent RUclips rail fan from the USA was trying to find out how much the French TGV ticket for 2nd class is being subsidized and his calculation was a US $50 for the ticket was paying for about $100 ticket if were traveling USA Amtrak. This was on the TGV which in class is closer to Amtrak's Acela that would be even more expensive than $100. Most people don't realize just how substantial the government support is for not just building HSR, but running HSR. HSR uses a lot of electricity. Most of the early adopters of HSR, such as Japan and France were planning on running it off of cheap nuclear electric power. When just running one full throttle locomotive of 11,000 hp that use 8.09 MW of electricity if it were 100% efficient which it is not. Most HSR trains have two locomotives running at about 1/2 throttle after accelerating up to speed.
Alright Sir Humphery
It’s a pure vanity project
Can the UK use Brexit energy to get this finished & help make Britain great again?

So HS2 ends at Euston, with no connection to the Channel Train at King’s Cross.
Stupid, stupid, stupid.
R
So why does HS2 require connection to the Channel Tunnel trains at London St Pancras International ( Not Kings Cross), the people who will be travelling on HS2 will just want to go to London not Europe
The speed requirements in the design proposal triggered the straightening of the route and the total out of control finances. If it was an extra line using the normal high speed line parameters, it could have been rerouted around population centres and areas of natural beauty without all the tunnelling and embankments?
They should of built a motorway straight through Wales to the coast its annoying travelling the stupid twisty a roads for hours on end

@@Jonnybravo6742 What's your railway qualification then, Keith? Just wondered.

In the days of Steam (pre 1968) the former Great Central Railway was largely engineered for 100mph running across the bulk of it's length, and had a centralised Freight Yard in a place called Woodford Halse in the middle of the country. If the clowns in govt hadn't ripped that up you wouldn't have the need for HS2 to exist.
The need for speed between has been the selling point but everyone in the railway industry knows that in reality its the capacity of the system that was needed as both the West Coast and East Coast mainlines are in terms of services packed full. Trying to run freight up the trunk of the country is largely abandoned during the daytime and it does the major mileage overnight. In reality we have far to many passenger trains scheduled which cost far too much to travel on anyway. The entire railway network as it stands needs a major rethink in the post covid age and when we have gigabit fibre optic communications now a domestic product.
