Since your title here is Wild discus ... Remember the ph tends to be crucial with the wild bs the hybrids so if your a newbie, keep a eye on things every few hours and I mean everything. You don't need to continually test the water but monitor the fish. If getting them shipped to you what temp is the bag water, check it and acclimate as George does. Easier to start with hybrids than wild but they are all amazing. Wish you well.
Always enjoy seeing his fish, discus or not. He's very right about stability as the ph is concerned. and yes wild discus are another matter requiring more strict adherence to the rule. Ten gallons per discus is a general rule of thumb but if many other community fish you might consider cutting back on one to that rule. I also suggest staying away from live bloodworm and offering a variety of food. If this man has grandchildren they probably fall asleep in his lap watching fish or being read to. Theres something about his voice that will put you to sleep after a full meal, ha, ha!
@@aquaticconceptsbringingwaterto Congrats grandpa! It's crazy times were in, protect that child to the best of your ability, sometimes out kids won't listen , that applied to me as well. Thanks for the great information. I have been keeping fish for a few years now but want to take the step to a more challenging and beautiful fish. Have started the research and collecting the equipment to set up my first Discus aquarium. By becoming a member of your channel hope to accumulate that knowledge.
This aquarium is goals! Love the simple but oh so lovely aquascape feature in the center. I’m researching everything about Discus to plan for a large tank next year and this video was super helpful.
I am sorry that happened! You can always message me if you need help. Give me your Facebook contact info. And I will get some info. Out to you as needed.
Hi, great 👍 video. You said you would be able to give a beef heart recipe. Please 🙏 if that possible would be very appreciated regards Bruce Lyck, Australia
HOw about the flow in the tank? I have malawi cilids now and they need a good flow in the tank. How about the discus? Do,s fluval fx6 2x in a 2 meter tank have to mutch flow for the discus?
They are doing ok. I have about 30 left from the 80 that hatched. This is a practice for me but they are getting larger and just starting to eat on their own. I will do a new video this week for you to see.
Your videos are really informative, thanks for taking the time to create them. Have you ever kept Platy's with Discus? I have a 75 gallon that has a bunch of platy's, sterbi corrie and a couple of SAE. I am thinking about converting this to a Discus tank and wondering if some of the platy's could work as dither fish? I also have a 135 gallon custom tank that is setup as a south american tank. What brand of air pump do you use? Thanks again.
My concern is that they are central American and South Mexico natives and the temps may be to high for them. I don't have a good answer for that. I use Aquatop Pumps. Love how quiet they are.
@@aquaticconceptsbringingwaterto Thanks for the info. I would rather rehome the platy's but my wife likes them and I really didn't want to setup another tank.
What is the best lighting for this setup that helps highlight the fish colors and for the anubius/java fern without excessive algae and recommendation on best heater to maintain these temps?
Simple good quality white and blue light. No complicated spectrum needed. You just need to find lights that look good with a built-in timer for convenience. Good luck!
Believe it or not a simple light system with white and blue lights only I find best. I like the look and have little or no algae issues because I try to use low light plants. As far as heaters try and go on Amazon and use their best medium priced digital for the size of your tank. You get what you pay for.
Thankyou for the video. I am new to your channel and hooked. Your information regarding discus is going to help me keep the best tank possible. I am letting my tank cycle about another month…maybe more. How do you feel about a couple of large sponge filters and a Tidal 110 for my 90 gallon? My back isn’t the greatest and pulling a canister out a couple times a week might be too much. Also, would a h.o.b filter create too much water current for these wide bodied slow moving fish? 18:44
Congratulations! I am glad to hear you are taking the time to “Season your tank” you probably know what I am going to say about the canister… it is the best filtration you can get especially if it has a built in UV. Run your Temp. At 86 degrees F• no less. This keeps many parasites and diseases to a minimum. Try not to feed live worms etc. this creates very bad habits and a tremendous amount of stress on both you and the fish. Buy your fish knowing what they are eating already and try to offer more variety of foods slowly for healthy fish. Beef Heart pellets are my favorite offer them early on in small amounts as they are very messy. I would make your flow as slow as you can “without losing filtration” thus the importance of a Canister if you can. When the time comes I have a new service that you can read about in my last video that may help you. Sponge is the best in my opinion as well as a new crushed volcanic rock media that is becoming more popular. If not make sure you have a large surface are of pores ceramic. Good luck!
You do not need to clean your canister more than once every few months. You should be able to get someone to pull it out for you? Oase is very quiet and you can get a built-in UV. I am under the belief that if you do less with bothering your fish you will have fewer problems. Thanks for the (Thank you $) it helps me help you a great deal.
If you mean 3 inch yes but only for a short few months. They will out grow that rather quickly. Or if you keep them in that size tank it needs to be a 50 tall and daily water changes. Some may end up stunted?
Cycle 4-6 weeks. Using test kit to verify nitrogen cycle has completed. You can put 10-12 Discus plus your community fish. Doing daily water changes of 50% the first month and then 30% daily from then on.
I would recommend a group of 5-7 to start out with at 3-3.5” all the same size and a 65 gallon tank. I have never seen great results with just two fish unless they are a breeding pair and that is a completely different conversation.
If one does not like bare bottom tank look, how about putting a neutral/natural looking tile on the bottom? It might look more attractive than bare bottom but also be easy to clean like bare bottom.
@@aquaticconceptsbringingwaterto does that mean u don’t know since u hearted but didn’t answer? 😊. I left timestanp for u in previous comment. 2:45 upper left hand corner. What kind of discus is that?

Thanks George. You mention a seasoned tank. Could it be a new tank with cycled media from another filter and a cycled sponge filter?
Yes for sure. I am a big fan of instant cycle by moving Media around.

Java Fern and Various Anubius Varieties

These are Kessel Lights
Is ok to start off with 2 ive seen people recommend group?

Can i use water that has run through a home water softener to change water in a discus tank?

Can I use bio substrate to set up a new tank?
Fluval Stratum is a great biosubstrate. I use that all the time.
What type of stone is that? Is it ph neutral?
Mountain Stone and yes pH neutral!
I am restarting a discus tank. Can I have 3 to four 2 to 3 inch discus in a 36 gallon tank?
For about 6 months only!
Thank you very much for the information. Excellent videos!!!@@aquaticconceptsbringingwaterto
Can I raise discus fish in a 45L tank?
Not recommended.
What kind of rocks are those? Are your plants glued to the rocks?
The Rock is Seryiu Stone and yes I use a Aquarium safe super glue sold in pet stores.
What kind of flake do they prefer
I use Seachem NutriDiet Discus Flakes
Are the tetras and algae eaters an active threat to any Discus eggs?
Yes! Never breed in a community tank if you are trying to breed quality fish. Either the community fish will eat or the parents if they feel a threat.
@@aquaticconceptsbringingwaterto Even the parents? I had hoped that they would guard the eggs (some some wild discus videos in the Amazon)
If one does not like bare bottom tank look, how about putting a neutral/natural looking tile on the bottom? It might look more attractive than bare bottom but also be easy to clean like bare bottom.
You can try anything. Just make sure the tile does not have additives that would harm your fish.
