  • Often known as the “king of aquarium fish,” Discus Fish earn this title through their gorgeous colors, patterns, and variations. Strains of them are highly sought after, Some costing new owners hundreds of dollars or more for a single fish. #discusfish #discusfishlover #aquariumfish #fishtank #neontetra #blackneontetra #discus #jbjaquariums #aquascape #plantedaquarium #seachem #fluval #spiderwood #aquariumbuild
    Even though this species of fish is so beautiful, they are not as commonly found in the hobby as other fish. This is likely because there is another connotation about Discus being one of the most difficult freshwater fish to keep. While discus fish care may require more attention than other aquarium fish, the thought of owning discus should not intimidate experienced aquarists. If they are kept in conditions where there is routine maintenance, owning this species of tropical South American Fish should not be considered “Intimidating or difficult” I hope you will watch this two-part series on Discus Fish Which covers Tank Design, Water Conditions, Feeding and General Care. i succesfully keeping discus for 2 years and that is my highest achievement in fishkeeping and aquascape, what i think is the key, make your tank big less problem you will have and make it will make it super stable, add a heck load of plants, and the bigger pump the better, any filter media will do, but for ease reason i use mostly sponge filter

    Discuses have no particular environment other than the tank itself. Where they are located is adaptable to your situation. Discus can adapt to almost any environment as long as that environment has consistent elements of traffic, noise and your interaction with your fish. Maintenance, Water changes and feeding are all important activities that build trust. If you are netting your fish and scaring them more than necessary, each time you approach the tank your fish will be suspect about why. If you make the experience a good one you build trust. Plan long term for your fish so that they can continue throughout their life cycle to experience the same environment and not disrupt their life experiences and patterns. This is True with all Tropical fish but some more than others. Discus fish are in that category where great care in planning a safe and stable environment yields the best results. They are not that fragile, they just need your trust. Good Luck!

      Thank you! The equipment has certainly changed over that period of time, but the basics have not. Clean water wins the day always as well as good nutrition that is both balanced and high in protein. Design your tank however you see it fitting into your life style, but making sure you have access to the complete tank is important to keep things clean. Plan ahead so the work does not deter you from keeping these beautiful fish. If you need any help just message me.

    Great content with beaut discus. You are quite correct when you say that discus are a hard fish too keep, this could not be further from the truth, as you say there is nothing to be scared of or intimidated by, as long as you do the work with water changes etc, discus are harder fish than some people like to admit. Once you start breeding them now this is one amazing experience to see the eggs hatch and a new generation been born life is indeed beautiful ❤️

    Thanks so much! Planning on setting up my first discus tank over the next few months. I have a well seasoned 66 gallon rimless that is very similar to this tank. I need to change the substrate as it is currently a heavily planted tank with aqua soil. I’m curious do you recommend white backgrounds? I currently have a black background but was considering changing it. Thank! I’ve subscribed and have watched a number of your videos.

    • @aquaticconceptsbringingwaterto
      @aquaticconceptsbringingwaterto  Год назад +1

      First thank you for both watching and subscribing. I appreciate that. A well seasoned tank is going to be the most important part of all this as your fish are dealing with stable water parameters. Also the background does not matter as much as you might think. It truly is a personal preference unless you are breeding in which case you want the three walls other than the front of your tank to be either light blue or white. Good luck and again thank you. Keep watching as I have some really great videos planned for the next several months. Like ad many as you cat and good luck with the new tank.

    I’d like to set up a 150 discus gallon tank, but I don’t even know where to start? I can afford the best equipment so I’m willing to pay for the best. Is there a list of equipment? How does one get the good bacteria to start growing in the tank if the tank is empty after being set up? Any suggestions where to start? I am in no rush so am willing to wait for it to cycle for months. I’ve set up freshwater/saltwater tanks in the early 1980s. However I see there are more advanced equipment now. I wish I could find a resource to all this. I’d like to put 7-8 larger (4.5-5”)discus (from same dealer) at the same time from the start to minimize bullying issues. I’d like Cardinal and rummy nosed tetras in the tank along with pleco(s).
    When I bring up setting up discus fish tank to local pet shops, they try to persuade me to not do it. I’m willing to do the frequent water changes as I know that’s vital for these fish.

If we listened to people who do not try things we would still be sitting around fire and grunting. Get out and make your dream tank and ask me for help if you need it. Glad to help.

Ones that need Substrate to get nutrients such as Crypts, swords etc. and others that draw their nutrition directly from the waste in the water such as Java Ferns and Anudias to name a few. You can research all these on line and build a tank best suited for the type of plants you like and then decide what is best for your situation.
