New smaller Sony Digital Paper is out for pre-order: amzn.to/2s5962G
And new firmware coming 5/30 which addresses some of the shortcomings I talked about in the video.

Mike, thanks for this excellent review. I have an iPad Pro on which I have placed the Paperlike screen protector. That gives the screen some resistance and makes writing really good. However, as a PhD student, I work a lot with PDFs and I have only one good eye. It is vital to me to have minimal glare to prevent eye strain. Have you tried the Paperlike on an iPad and would you say the Sony tablet prevents eye strain? Does it have a back light like the iPad? Thanks.

      Hi Birdie,
Thanks! I have never tried the Paperlike screen protector but I've seen some reviews and everyone seems to like it. I think Paperlike was designed primarily to improve the writing experience, but won't help much with glare inherent in the display technology in iPads indoors. Outdoors though it could help, but using iPads outdoors never worked well for me. You immediately lose contrast and brightness, which adds to eye strain.
E-Ink is far superior in reducing eye strain compared to backlit color screens and no stick-on screen protector or application will match e-ink's paper-like display.
Unfortunately, Sony does not have any backlighting so you'll need an external light source.

no pinch zoom? what a huge disappointment. the previous model did have that (DPT-S1).
I don't understand why their software always regresses. even there is no option to jump to a specific page. you have to use the top slider to get near the desired page. no exact page jump. wtf?!!

They just released a new unit, smaller ( amzn.to/2s5962G ) and new firmware coming out 5/30 which addresses some of those issues.

No Linux may be a dealbreaker. I would think that many academics who read technical papers also run Linux as primary OS. So, virtual box it is?

Agreed. So disappointed there isn’t a way to load content on this without a computer. One can hope Sony makes a new firmware or device that can appeal to those who believe computers the way we think of them is becoming more obsolete as we rely more on cell phones and more mobile devices with the same mobility some of us were hoping to achieve with this otherwise light, mobile product.

Sony is pleased to announce a firmware update for your DPT-RP1, as well as a new mobile application for Android™ and iOS. The Sony Digital Paper Mobile Application will allow you to transfer files to and from the Digital Paper anywhere, anytime, without the need of a computer. The free app will be available in June from both Google Play and the Apple App Store.
New features and functions made possible by the DPT-RP1 firmware update include:
    • Screen Capture/Display Output Mode-connect via PC or Mac to a projector and display the contents on the Digital Paper screen, including real-time handwriting and mark-up, to a larger audience
    • Interactive PDF and Smart Forms-populate forms using drop-down menus, check boxes and radio buttons for easy, structured data capture
    • Page Jump-enter a page number and go directly to that specific page
    • Pan and Zoom-move the display area after a page or portion of the page has been enlarged
    • Automatic Page Rotation-pages from a document, book or article will automatically rotate as needed to optimize the reading experience
    • Page Thumbnails Mode-view 16 pages of a document, book or article at one time
The firmware update will be available to all owners of DPT-RP1 starting on May 30, 2018.

Hi John, no I have not. What do you think about the reMarkable tablet?

      Mike Mu
I actually bought one but recently returned it. Very nice drawing experience but was not happy with build quality and battery life. I'm tempted to get the Sony but concerned about drawing and note taking functionality. Are you still happy with your Sony?

      Hi John,
I don't draw much, so you might want to take this like a grain of salt.
The Sony is good for note taking, not so much for sketching - this is because it doesn't have pressure sensitivity (like reMarkable). Its either the pen writes, or it doesn't. The width of the line does not change with the pressure you place on the tip, nor can it measure your angle of your 'brush' so to speak.
The build quality of the Sony is what I'd call 'fragile'. Definitely not something I'd be using without care, and I wouldn't hand it to my nieces and nephews (who are 4 and 6) to play with. They'd rip it apart its so thin!
Its not because Sony didn't care, I think they really wanted to make it as light, and thin as possible and they a fantastic job at it. My iPad Pro feels a lot more sturdy.
If sketching is more important to you, skip the Sony. Note taking is fine.
      -Mike

No complaints about latency. Its obviously not going to be comparable to the current generation iPad Pros. I think I have some example shots in the video, so you can judge for yourself.
The fact that you care so much about this means you are probably super sensitive to it, and it might bother you.

    • @MikeMu

Thanks. Yup, I was going to say that you can see the example. I'd normally be bothered by it, but its acceptable to me. I don't do precision drawing or writing on the Sony, just notes - and its OK for that.
I think when Remarkable v2 is out, I'll give it a try.
