I'm not even an audiophile but I really appreciate how you approach this sort of stuff. It's great to see such enthusiastic support for localised companies (I'm not even American, but I mean made in house kinda shit). I'm so tired of big brands- and even some small companies- shipping everything off to places like China for exploited labour just to save themselves some money. Especially when those savings are rarely passed to the consumer. I'm always down for supporting companies like Grado, where they seem to be making smart money saving decisions to help keep their costs reasonable. Wish I could get a pair of these, honestly, they remind me of old 1930s microphones. Look vintage as fuck.
Too bad they’re almost impossible to get now since this video, like I see them go for a grand sometimes on eBay, it’s like vinyl where once something that was once ‘cheap’ is now heavily sought out by people
@@thedoctor8527 I'd say that's a good thing for the company though. It means they're producing a good product that people want. Sucks that limited stock means their items are harder to come by, but they can only make what they're capable of. I still think it's the better option than exploiting workers in other countries. Maybe the increased buyers means they might be able to expand a little and produce more stock in the future. I've just seen a bunch of grados on amazon not far above stock price, so they don't seem too badly priced still.
"You can tell it's hand made, you can tell that someone's crimped these" *points to injection moulded plastic over-moulding on the cable, the least hand-makeable thing in the universe*
You know at 2008 when i went to college i need a “mobile” headphone and bought an iGrado (i think it’s 49$) without knowing what is GRADO. Best decision of my life.
Yea, they look super cheap, but they sound SOO good. I bought igrado 1.5 years ago for about $30. Some kind of discounted old stock since they are discontinued. Immediately bought 2 spare pairs after testing them. Still using the very first pair. I also used 2500 grit sandpaper on them to make them matte :D
I had those for my birthday around that time. They sounded amazing for the price, but the cable was too weak for me so it ended up breaking after around 6 months. Feels bad man
@@chethammer really hope its going to stay that way forever because I'm the kind of guy who breaks everything he owns and I bought the Hemp... love them so muvh I want to keep them forever
From memory the IGrados are Chinese.. They experimented with making headphones not based on their normal design in China but I don't know how many they do like that now.. Their normal ones are made in the US with differences in cables, materials, wiring etc.. Making the difference between models... But the same basic design apllys to all..
I just bought a pair of sr80e’s and when I saw this my stomach dropped. I thought he was going to say something that would make me regret my purchase. I couldn’t have been more pleasantly surprised.
This comment kinda scared me, like how does this guy know my name? And how does he know that Aussie Audiophiles are the best audiophiles? Then I read your user name, and my confusion died down.
They're really pricey to buy online if you're not in the US but if you can find a local retailer it will be fine. Made the mistake to buy them online immediatly after the video for 259$ CA including shipping while some local stores have them for 100$. I fucking love them tho. I'm surprised how contreversial Grado is in audiophile forums
@ there was a website called gradocanada that listed all the local retailers. I can't seems to find the equivalent for mexico but maybe your google algorythm will have more luck than me. It also seems that their online seller, 4ourears, has a mexican version so maybe buying online in mexico is not that bad ? You should still check it out.
Got the 80s for Christmas and holy crap I’m hearing sounds I’ve never heard in songs I’ve heard a million times. Lemon Jelly never sounded so sparkly! Dankpods - thank you for your well put together and hilarious videos. One of the main highlights of my year has been the discovery of your brilliant channel. Roll on 2021 for even more awesome content
If I just hadn't purchased a pair of MDR-7506s I'd probably look at a pair of the Grados as well. I had a rep from one of the best car care products tell me they never advertise their products because the quality speaks for itself and I definitely get that vibe from Grado.
I've learned to expect opposites with this channel, start with how bad something is and you were surprised with how good they were, start with glowing expectations and the rest of the video is laughing at how terrible they preformed
ngl, I bought my SR80e coz I remember watching a videos where you said that they're like 80% of the sound quality of the SR325e (which you said you use most often for casual listening), but for a lot less money, and I wanted a good pair of open backs to listen to FLACs and watch movies. I fucking love em to bits now and they're the only expensive purchase I haven't grown to regret. So you can imagine the pikachu shock face I pulled when I saw the SR60e (which aren't too different from the 80s) in the thumbnail and the part of the title said "worst headphones ever". I was ready to create a petition to nuke Australia for harbouring the man that made me a grados fan boy and then spat on my face for becoming one. Thankfully, you were just professing your love for em, so Australia lives to fight another day.
Honestly from this vids title and the Hemphones, I was expecting him to shat on Grado headsets and would have hated this channel from then on. I've come to love Grado headsets after buying SR325is 8 years ago before they transitioned everything to an E on their wiring (was I or IS). Now with my own pair of hemphones after looking at reviews, I fell in love with Grado designs all over again. I'd like to get my hands on higher end sets like the PS500e or one of their reference series GS1000 (or one of the lower models for pricing). That said, I know Senheisser, AKG, etc makes really good headphones, I'm just enjoying what Grado has created thus far.
@@roberthiggins4186 I think the guy's too entertaining to hate to be honest, so I wouldn't have actually held it against him. I just thought that if he had actually made a video shitting on Grados, It would have been super out of character, but I still would have expected a reasonable explanation since he's generally really positive and optimistic about headphones (even mediocre ones - not to say he doesn't label them as mediocre in the end) and explains his conclusion pretty well. My only gripe with the Grados is the foam. Yeah, I get it shapes the sound and gets the speakers close to your ears without too much obstruction, but I really wish I could use the grados without needing a break after 2 hours of so of enduring that itchy feeling the foam gives my ears. I heard the foam gets more comfortable with use, is that true?
@@Rayaxe Quick question, I'm interested in them being my first better quality headphones and I'm a total noob. Do you use any DAC with em or could you tell me if you should?
@@WilczukPL Sorry for the late reply - what Liam said. You can use them without a DAC or AMP. I often use them on my phones with a USB C to 3.5mm Jack adaptor.
My "go-to" headphones since about 1989 have been Sony MDR-V6. I have had many other headphones as well, but something about the way the MDR-V6's sound appeal to me. I have noticed things in older recordings that I have not heard with other headphones, such as tape warble that happened during the live recording that ended up on the original vinyl press and subsequent CD's. Other sounds from the studio sessions herd that the artist probably didn't want in the recording as well. I actually enjoy hearing those mistakes. I decided to pick up a pair of the Grado SR60e and have been using them for about a week. I think this may be my new "go-to" headphones. I hear those same "mistakes" with the Grado's where other headphones boost the base or have other electronics that mask what the true recoding has. The only negative I have with the Grado so far is the foam earpad and the sharp edge of the headphone on the part of the headphone near the earpad. I wish the earpad was a little softer perhaps a different material over the foam. It is getting harder to hear the "pure" sounds since I have been getting older. I have listed to music thru headphones for so many years louder than I should have and it has taken a toll on my hearing.
Change the pads to G or L pads they immediately change the sound and make it immediately sound better, but because the drivers are further from your ear, you definitely need an amp to give them the same sound output(will also increase the quality further)
I joined the bandwagon, just tried them out, love'em!! They seem comfortable at the mo, and the bass is fine by me (not head shaking, but defined). Got them secondhand from a guy that said they were uncomfortable, I didn't ask if he'd looked for replacement pads or tried bending the headband slightly :s
@@cj123485 it was the video where he was talking about beginner audiophile gear I’ll find it real quick. Found it! It is “Make your phone sound amazing!” It’s my favorite video tbh. He teaches you about DACS and some headphones at different price points. I bought some sr60s because of that video
SR80s were my first not-shitty headphones that I bought, since I genuinely wasn’t sure if I would be able to really hear a difference (my eardrums have been damaged) and they weren’t hideously expensive. Oh, I heard a difference, they were amazing. That began my odyssey into nice audio equipment.
I got the SR80x for my birthday and they've not only reinvigorated my love of music, but they've made me realise my hearing loss isn't as bad as I thought it was. I couldn't ask for more honestly.
Finally got a pair after watching this video (the SR80's) and this video almost doesn't do them justice. It's amazing how much detail you can hear. Every instrument, every breath, every movement of the fingers along the frets, YOU CAN HEAR IT ALL. It's honestly transformed the way I listen to music and I dont think I can go back.
You’ve turned me into an audiophile, I originally want to save up for Meza 90 classic, but GOD I want experience the grado’s so I caved and got the SR 80 as I think that’d be the highest I’d get money wise. (for a reference point for about 2 years have been using dry “gaming” headphones(literally no bass, or high end), and some Bose wireless headphones (the wires for it takes a balance output and I can’t find a good pair of the wires for the life of me)) Also I LOVE your channel, I always eagerly wait for the next week to roll around for what you have in store for the next vid and I’ve repeatedly watched all your videos till the end several times! Can’t wait to see what audio related thing you do next man!
i just watched this review and my first thought was 'these sound great for gaming.' just get an antlion mod mic and boom, best 'gaming headset' ever. they would live up the the classic 'competitive edge' all these daft gaming headset companies say.
I got my HyperX Cloud 2's for gaming, and the Grado's for music listening. I'm just down right amazed by the value these two headphones represents. The Grado's are only for home use, but I work a lot from home - so they are ideal for use while I work. So much Detail! I love Symphonic and Powermetal, not to mention orchestral music - anything John Williams has made, is audio gold with these.
Hey mate, so unfortunately soundstaging is more or less a strictly stereo experience. But with the bad news out of the way, any set of headphones driven by a mono device, be it a phone, computer, or DAC can still sound beautiful. The high-ends and sound signature on these bad boys would still be just as sparkly.
Grados are also insanely easy to mod and customize to your liking. I've been running a pair of custom SR80s with macassar ebony cans handmade by a headfi forum member and a cable I braided myself for years, repairing them whenever I need to, and I *love* the sound. I have more than a few pairs of headphones (my second favourite being my AKG K7XXs) but I still keep plugging my Grados into my tube amp (or my phone). I have a box of spare SR80 parts from a friend whose SR80s died and didn't want to repair them, so I'mma build another set at some point haha.
My wife and I got each other the 80's and a headphone splitter for Xmas and I can't wait to watch things together, it genuinely has helped us become even closer, thank you Dank
I just got a pair of SR60's recently because of this review, and damn, they're pretty amazing. What really surprised me isn't that Alive 2007 feels so lively or that Gorillaz sound slappier than usual, but that 16-bit music just sounds so amazingly crisp. It almost feels I'm experiencing Chrono Trigger's soundtrack for the first time again.
Having modded my 10 year old SR80s, I can say that the worst part of their design is that plastic button with the model number on. Just taking that off and replacing it with an open grid just ever so slightly takes off the tinnyness and the worst of the harshness on the high end, I think that chunk of plastic makes a slight echo at those frequencies and making the back completely open cleans it up. That or that it's I swapped the outer cans with 3D printed parts, they seem slightly less resonant than the OG plastic so maybe.
Nah a lot of audiophiles dont like grados headphones, they have an outdated sound, wayyy too overpriced for their high end models and dont sound as good as other headphones on the market, but everyones ear is different.
I just picked up my SR60x'es and I am totally blown away by the stage (I FOUND THE BONGO MAN, MATE!). I went to an audio salon and compared between to 80's and 60's, and honestly, for my personal taste the 60's were a better pick. Currently I just refuse to take them off as I am rediscovering music by knowing where every musician stands. Big thank you for this video, I wouldn't have known where to start without it. The value for the price ratio is absolutely off the charts with these
the instant you said that the high ends sound exposed i instantly got interested, i would love to hear what dci shows sound like; especially the older shows with the soprano g bugles
I just stumbled back to this video. I brought a set of SR80x's a year ago purely based on this video. My word are they amazing. They weigh nothing so they are the most comfortable cans I've ever had, especially after putting on some large foam over-ear pads from ebay. I even have a set of SR60x's on the way for the office to replace the crappy Dell headset I was prescribed. Even bringing in my 80's from home I get so many questions because they look so damn cool. I don't think I would have ever heard of Grado if it weren't for this video, all I can say is thank you. I love these things -written from my Grado SR80x's
I found my Dad’s adc sound shaper MK 2 and watching this when you said about watching movies I knew what you were going to say. Tinkering with the eq in real time on video games in real time and getting that “sparkly sound” is unreal you still get the punch from the bass get the mids then you get this clear vocals, clear steps little noises that you didn’t know existed. So I’m defiantly going to get a pair
In cas should didn’t already know, Grado makes wireless headphones too. They have earbuds and “the only open back Bluetooth headphones on the market” which cost less almost 2/3 the price of the 325s. Just thought that would be a good vid
Old style headphones still work well. My friend's set from the 80s still work without any issues. I also had a Grado and it didn't deteriorate in function after 2 decades. My only issue is the earpads are terrible, extremely uncomfortable. I had to replace them with something with more padding a few times over the years. But that's about it.
There's nothing more fun to watch than someone talking passionately about what they love, like I got so excited watching this video and I'm not even passionate about audio quality! Love the content dude
It's pretty weird but I actually kinda love when you show the sound of the Hu-Duh Six-Hunge-0s. They are so easy on the ears and balanced and everything else you show is never as good to me at least. I know it's just through my earbuds (which are also Senns btw
I've daily driven AKG K240s since 2017, and I have also been very tempted to buy the HD 600s because of their referee status. Maybe some day, I would need to revamp my whole setup for them.
I went to a local hi-fi place out in my area to see if they had a nice buncha headphones that I could try out, and man they had a bunch of wild stuff. They had two pairs of Audezes and it was like seeing a celebrity. Those things sounded wild. Of course, they were unbelievably out of my price range. I puttered around with some other high ends, just spoiling myself. They also had a couple lower-end pairs including those funny little underdogs, the Grados. They had the SR60X ones and I really wanted to give them a shot, and I really loved em when I did. On top of that they had a price tag that I wouldn't sweat if I bought them then and there, and so I did. Turns out the demo pair were the last ones they had in the building so the guy helping me chopped off a quarter of the price, so I was just walking on air. Just wanted to say thanks for opening the door to audio in an approachable way, being reintroduced to all my favorite music is such a wonderful experience.
I have the older SR60 model, I used them on an iPod Nano (first gen!) through to today. The thing that's especially great is 1. you can buy new headphone pads if they wear out, off the damn shelf at the dealers that sell these 2. THEY DON'T CRUSH MY GLASSES INTO MY SKULL
I ordered a set of these after this video. Right ear was indeed a bit low on bass. Left ear lacked it altogether. Like, absolutely no sound below 300 Hz. But if you only listen to the right ear they sound glorious. The best headphone I've ever used. Waiting for a replacement pair to come.
I got the 80’s, put them on a friend’s head, and now he has the 80’s.

"you'll need to take this with So many grains of salt you'll get sodium poisoning" is going to be my new jab in online arguments. Thanks Danks!

By old mate Senn
I come from the future with good news. Grado has the new SR60x (about $20 more) in stock. Have a look!
@@heavyhauler426 Thank you, kind time traveller.
@@heavyhauler426 I got the sr125x
The bastards are out of stock, now I want to get them even more.
I just got a used good condition S80 and it's only $40 more than the S60s so i was like yeah gimme
Buy headphones off eBay man they’re so cheap. A little alcohol wipe down, maybe some new ear pads, and you’d never know they’re 10 years old.

Feels bad man
@@Nettacki I think if you send them back Grado will repair the cable. If you still have them.
"What do you like to watch Hayden?"
"An exciteable australian who loves noise."
Haha
This comment kinda scared me, like how does this guy know my name? And how does he know that Aussie Audiophiles are the best audiophiles? Then I read your user name, and my confusion died down.
Thank you for opening my eyes to these headphones! You have opened my world to audiophile music and my love for iPods as well. Sincerely, thank you!
And..... that's the price and the stock of Grado SR60 just rised insanely.
@@magusperde365 Thanks for the review of it.
@@magusperde365 where did you find your retailer? I'm from Mexico and bc of this video I also want to buy them lol
Are they publicly traded? I thought they were a private family business.
“Babe wake up, Dank Pods uploaded again”
Got the 80s for Christmas and holy crap I’m hearing sounds I’ve never heard in songs I’ve heard a million times. Lemon Jelly never sounded so sparkly! DankPods: the worst best headphones
Me: *visible confusion*
If I just hadn't purchased a pair of MDR-7506s I'd probably look at a pair of the Grados as well. I had a rep from one of the best car care products tell me they never advertise their products because the quality speaks for itself and I definitely get that vibe from Grado.
I love how he can speak with his hands and de random zooms
*Grado after this video*
**STONKS**
@@WilczukPL saying that they are 32Ω they should be able to run well out of anything with a 3.5mm jack
I got the SR80e's after you mentioned these a while ago, mainly for watching films late at night. Very happy!
What video did he mention those? I'd love to watch them.
@@cj123485 it was the video where he was talking about beginner audiophile gear I’ll find it real quick. Found it! It is “Make your phone sound amazing!” It’s my favorite video tbh. He teaches you about DACS and some headphones at different price points. I bought some sr60s because of that video

What's the sound signature of the sr80e
DankPods uploads twice at a time so that we have a review to listen to with each ear.
I think one of the reasons Grados sound so good is because of that heightened treble. It really helps sell the older audiophiles!
I swear i've heard that bit about "sparkly" before
Dankpods: double uploads
Everyone: impossible.
SR80s were my first not-shitty headphones that I bought, since I genuinely wasn’t sure if I would be able to really hear a difference (my eardrums have been damaged) and they weren’t hideously expensive.
Oh, I heard a difference, they were amazing. That began my odyssey into nice audio equipment.
first 'highend' always special, better to pick wisely really
I really appreciate that you play the drum set, and that you play the ultimate form of drumming....jazz
3 whole vids today? Damn, I am blessed
I got the SR80x for my birthday and they've not only reinvigorated my love of music, but they've made me realise my hearing loss isn't as bad as I thought it was. I couldn't ask for more honestly.
You've made me so curious to get these! Also thank you for the Frank clips I love you Frank!
Finally got a pair after watching this video (the SR80's) and this video almost doesn't do them justice. It's amazing how much detail you can hear. Every instrument, every breath, every movement of the fingers along the frets, YOU CAN HEAR IT ALL. It's honestly transformed the way I listen to music and I dont think I can go back.
welcome, yeah they are and yeah you cant
My older brother just got me some 80s for Christmas and they kick ASS. My other set's a set of ATH-m50x, and they don't suck, but these blow 'em away.
You’ve turned me into an audiophile, I originally want to save up for Meza 90 classic, but GOD I want experience the grado’s so I caved and got the SR 80 as I think that’d be the highest I’d get money wise. (for a reference point for about 2 years have been using dry “gaming” headphones(literally no bass, or high end), and some Bose wireless headphones (the wires for it takes a balance output and I can’t find a good pair of the wires for the life of me))
Also I LOVE your channel, I always eagerly wait for the next week to roll around for what you have in store for the next vid and I’ve repeatedly watched all your videos till the end several times!

"The Great Alps of Audio" *sings amazing song*
omg why is that so funny
Mate. Are they any good for someone (me) with one ear? Can they be “mono’d” ? What is the best way to do this? Love your channel.
Most phones have a mono setting in the acessability options
Windows also has an option for mono audio
When he was describing the really bad low end headphones , I thought he was talking about raycons
I love how he puts the asterisks, but you can really tell the difference
My wife and I got each other the 80's and a headphone splitter for Xmas and I can't wait to watch things together, it genuinely has helped us become even closer, thank you Dank
This is adorable
I just got a pair of SR60's recently because of this review, and damn, they're pretty amazing.
What really surprised me isn't that Alive 2007 feels so lively or that Gorillaz sound slappier than usual, but that 16-bit music just sounds so amazingly crisp. It almost feels I'm experiencing Chrono Trigger's soundtrack for the first time again.
literally your videos are what I'm using for breaks in my study. Love ya dude!
ha literally doing that rn too

Having modded my 10 year old SR80s, I can say that the worst part of their design is that plastic button with the model number on. Just taking that off and replacing it with an open grid just ever so slightly takes off the tinnyness and the worst of the harshness on the high end, I think that chunk of plastic makes a slight echo at those frequencies and making the back completely open cleans it up. That or that it's I swapped the outer cans with 3D printed parts, they seem slightly less resonant than the OG plastic so maybe.
you're the only person i've ever heard of who bought grado sr60s thinking they'd be bad; their audio quality is legendary in the audiophile community!
I really do question if he's actually an audiophile.
Well he did recommend them in his budget audiophile vid
Nah a lot of audiophiles dont like grados headphones, they have an outdated sound, wayyy too overpriced for their high end models and dont sound as good as other headphones on the market, but everyones ear is different.
He has transcended past the normal level of audio.
@@mnunez10 He's not a complete nutjob, so no, not a real audiophile.

I just picked up my SR60x'es and I am totally blown away by the stage (I FOUND THE BONGO MAN, MATE!). I went to an audio salon and compared between to 80's and 60's, and honestly, for my personal taste the 60's were a better pick. I love these things

The Grados are infamous for extra-bass moddability. Seems like a perfect video followup!

Old style headphones still work well. My friend's set from the 80s still work without any issues. I also had a Grado and it didn't deteriorate in function after 2 decades.
I was not expecting that price tag. Pretty cool!
Two videos in one minute? Nice man nice.

I have the older SR60 model, I used them on an iPod Nano (first gen!) through to today. The thing that's especially great is
1. you can buy new headphone pads if they wear out, off the damn shelf at the dealers that sell these
2. THEY DON'T CRUSH MY GLASSES INTO MY SKULL
“and this was recorded by me; an idiot”😂
Bought the 80s about 5 years ago, still love them, nice to see Grado getting the love!
I come for the funny jokes and stay for the frank at the end
