Thanks!
In this video, I use VLC 3.0.8 and an Alpha SubStation (.ass) subtitle file but it also works with SubRip or .srt subtitles.
You also need the video and respective subtitle file(s).

It's not every day that you come across tutorials on RUclips as well explained as this one. Very well spoken, clear and straight to the point. You have a gift for this, mister. Thank you very much!

No annoying or loud background music-check, clear and reasonable volume voice-check, clear instructions-check, and soothing calm voice-extra check
Thank you for the tutorial
Thx for the nice video David. It doesn’t work for me and I’m hoping you could help. I have the newest version of VLC. There is no “Convert/Save”. There is “Convert/Stream”, but when I use it, it doesn’t give you an option of adding subtitles. Could you please tell me how I can get it to work. There is a tab on the top that I can add subtitles. But it just adds it while I’m viewing it in VLC. It will not let you permanently burn the subtitles into the mp4 file. What can I do in order to burn the subtitles into an mp4 file? Thank you in advance for any insight.
You have a very calm and soothing voice, you should start an ASMR channel. .
Thank you for your kind words, Eeshan.
I'll think about it. :-)
hahaha yess
Well I just watched this, and found myself thinking, how pleasant to have a video with such a calm, unrushed and clear speaker. So I'll add my vote to that idea!

ThumbsUp also for the seductive ASMR inductive :) "s" at the end of some words!
He'd be 'mongst the too very a few ASMR bring-about_creators of content with real meaning.
Nope he should not because triggered insaan can make video on him
If VLC doesn't work for you, kindly use HandBrake. Here's how it works.

I followed this tutorial and it worked after hours of frustrating failure. Thank you very much my man; I owe you!
You're welcome.
You can also use Handbrake as an alternative to VLC and you have more control of the video dimensions and quality.
Here's how it works.

Thanks!
Perfectly explained, not at all over complicated and easy to follow. Thank you so much for this video.
We do not have these type of simple tutorials any more. Now people speak about their life at the begining, then they sponsor and advertise stuff and at last the come to the topic where they forget the main content of the video. Loved your video
I went through 3 other tutorials (text articles) and nothing seemed to work. With this tutorial, on the first try, BOOM! It worked. Thank You! If only every other tutorial was this well explained, life would be such a wonderful place.
You're welcome!
Thanks A Ton Buddy!!
Your speaking style is so calm and Catchy!
keep up the good work! :)
one of the best, the most straight, enough spoken words and exactly what I needed! Thank you
Thank you so much! Finally, after hours and hours of looking for this info a very clear and useful explanation! Got my video subtitled with srt file!
thank you so so much for this tutorial! i've downloaded a movie and wanted to watch it on the tv using usb and this video helped me a lot to add the subtitles :))
Glad I could help!
Excellent video: calm voice, right to the point, and carefully explained. Thank you.
You're welcome, Dan. Happy to share.
He has talent to ASMR!
THANK YOU for this simple, straightforward and informative video. Spent 3 hours trying to upload a video on Canva with translated subtitles but got nowhere until I chanced upon your video. You are a lifesaver! 🙏
Berhasil x?
Short, straight to the point, results. My kind of video tutorial.
Finally! I watched 5 videos before this one, and none of them worked. But yours works a treat! My subtitle file was SRT and your method works perfectly. Thank you for a succinct and well-presented solution to my problem! I have liked and subscribed!
You're welcome and thank you for your kind words.
I'm so happy that you got the solution to your problem.
You can also look at Handbrake. It does a good job as well.

All the best.
Thanks!
mine didn't work though, it is also srt. What did i do wrong?
@@miriamawinaba7931 it didn't work for me too:(
@@David_Mbugua If you still read these comments, I did what you said and subtitles appeared but the audio did not. Would you by any know what I may have done wrong? Thank you for your time.
Thank you sooo much this is the perfect tutorial, no rumbling, explains everything step by step, AMAZING
Thanks David for this simple lesson. I tried other methods that people put up on RUclips. It didn't work. One even said I could the video and the.srt in one folder. It didn't work. I had to convert my .vtt file to .srt file and that didn't turn out well. Until I saw your channel and followed your instructions. I'm able to watch movies now with subtitles. I will give 5 Star 🤩.
I was looking for a way to save my subs to video and you helped me! Thanks a lot, David and May God bless you.
Glad I could help!
THANK YOU SO SO SO MUCH!!!! i almost died trying to do this following others’ tutorial. But I made it only because of yours one!!!! THANK YOU FOR REAL
You're welcome. Happy to help.
You almost died🤣. Me too
Thank you, David. A helpful, clear, and detailed tutorial like always. You are very competent and insightful. Thank you for sharing your insights and knowledge with the community.
Thank you for the video. I did it with Hebrew, and there was no problem. The subtitles was placed in the right direction.
thank you so much! i've waited long for a spanish movie merging the subs thru this video and it worked! even on tv without internet connection! thank u so much.. keep working on this kind of stuffs, its very informative!!!
You're welcome. 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
David. You are a legend. This worked perfectly in VLC 3.0.11. Thank you so much!
You're welcome. Happy to help.
Thank you. Recently startsd translating series and I learned everything from your videos. These videos are amazing! Thank you 🙇
Precise, Concise, and Straightforward. Splendid
Really appreciate the tutorial and the side note addressing problems with only few languages 🙏🙏 keep it up
Bruhhhh THANK YOU! I did this file 3 times and not once did it add the subtitles hardcoded or optional. It's because even though I added it, I didn't check the wrench icon and subtitles to verify it did add it, which by default it didn't. So you showing that was all I needed. Thanks!!!
Happy to help. Thanks!
Thanks David...so far so good. Simple instructions,
It looks like my conversion will take some time....I will edit.
I just found your video after longtime looking for someone to help me, and i think i started also loving you from your voice and face😂🤣 thanks for the video it helped me.
Unfortunately, when using Mac, it doesn't have an option to provide a subtitle file to add to the movie. Any tips from anyone?
Didn't work for me, I don't know why, but subtitles didn't embed into the video. so sad.
Thank you so much for this video! It helped me very a lot! May God Almighty poor out his blessing to you!
This was really straightforward and helpful. Thank you so much:
Glad it was helpful!
Just what i needed, well explained and to the point, thank you very much!
Thank you!! Finally it worked but I had to try several times, by choosing different options on the Convert - Settings tabs. Because first there was no audio on the video, then there was no image. In case someone else had the same problem, the right way to go is to have a tick on "Audio", in the Audio Codec tab (but not on "keep audio original track") and have a tick on "Video", in the Video Codec tab (but not on "keep the video original track").
🙏🙏
Thank you. For me, it required me to check both audio and keep original audio track. I guess every video is different, but your comment led me to success so thank you!
Thanks man! I have used VLC to convert FLAC files to mp3, but didn't know about this. Now I can load in forced srt English subtitles (for different language scenes) into video. Cool. 👌
Beautiful voice and great, straight to the point tutorial. Thanks a lot and keep it up!
Straight forward and very helpful. You're a star. Thank you.
You're welcome.
Thank you so much, David! It worked! I'm so very appreciated for your help!
Hi, glad that it worked for you! I have the newest version of VLC. There is no “Convert/Save”. There is “Convert/Stream”, but when I use it, it doesn’t give you an option of adding subtitles. Could you please tell me how it worked for you. I tried many times but just cannot figure how it would work to burn the subtitles into a video. Thank you in advance for any insight.
In your video demonstration, you used the wrench icon to select settings for Encapsulation, Video codec, Audio codec, and Subtitles. You did not select “keep original video track”. Does that cause the converted file to not have video? That’s what happened to me. I followed your steps for a H265 mpeg file, but it didn’t work for me. Is there something else that I should do? Thank you.
thanks man, saved me after hours of looking for a solution to this problem
Many thanks for this very clear and useful tutorial. Public act of generosity! Greetings from Asia
Finally something that works! A thousand thanks. Be victorious!
You're welcome!
Thank you! I done it all under 5 minutes! I googled *How to let subtitle stick on laptop movie* and I got this video recommended. Google and RUclips and you are a lifesaver!
I almost exit during the converting part😅 Thank goodness I read the text on the tab. It's said *Converting File* and saw the number moving. Currently, 7 minutes out of 1hr.. :') now I've to wait
Hi, I'm wondering if you still reply to these but if you could, can you help me with why adding the subtitles, the video just doesn't play or it's lacking sound when played in VLC?
Thank very much for the straightforward , valuable and clear information.
You are welcome!
Thanks. I had a bit of trouble. First few were fine but no sound, finally figured in the settings were subtitles is tick to tick to keep the original mp3 then it worked.
Thanks David...this was what I needed.
You're welcome.
Hello David
Thank you for the video as it helped tremendously, but I was wondering if you could assist me in figuring out why my videos no longer have audio after adding the srt files?
Hi, have a question here. This method indeed work however when I play the convert video for some reason it start with blank image for like 9-10 seconds then the video go back to normal. During the blank image, the audio can be listen perfectly fine, just no image for like 9-10 seconds
Super cool and clear guide. Thank you so much!
You're welcome. :)
Thank you very much David, this was great and very helpful!
You're welcome, Brandon. Happy to help.

I want to say thankyou, it worked for me, great advice
Perhaps the best tutorial on RUclips. Subs!
can i ask ? how to download the ASS or alpha substation subtitle file into the PC the one that you use to add subtitle in the MOVIES ?
Thank you so much! you give very clear instructions.
You are doing a great job David. Thanks a lot.
You're welcome. Thanks!
I followed your video step by step, but when I play back my video, no subtitles are showing still, only option to add subs is available
brother i have germany movies and i want subtitls be in germany language too.
so is this way work too on this situation?.
Thanks a lot, your explanation was very clear and precise, this video has been really helpful.
only issue is when i transferred the video to my external hard drive and played it on my TV, it didn't show the subs, can this be fixed?
Gave it a go and it worked a treat
You sir are a legend
OMG Thanks man, so simple, but i didn't know about this tool on vlc.
Happy to share and thank you for watching.
Thanks! That worked a treat!
You might want to mention that you also need to select 'retain audio', otherwise you end up with a silent video. But, then, some people might want that, i guess.
Where to find it
@@emanjamal8695 I think he's refering to ''keep the original track'' on audio section. I saw other youtubers click that audio box too. If not you will end up getting silent video.
Damn it he did not say it I end up silent video -.-"
Very well explained at a workable pace Thank You for sharing your knowledge
Awesome! Thank you! VLC is so cool, I don't mind waiting if I can avoid installing software for one off task
Thank you so much, but it takes too much time since my video is 1080 hd and 50 minutes. What should I do?
is this a hard sub? I mean you can upload it on youtube as mp4 and its subbed there?
This results in a hard sub. The subs will always be there. Thanks!
Amazingly helpful, thank you
Your a legend for explaining it so well
Thank you, this was really clear and useful!
I guess I'll find out about this before any reply here is given... But if the subs are encoded into the .mkv, (and selectable but not visible by default) you still need to find a separate sub file to hard encode it into the video right...?
Hi. My video is an mkv with embedded subtitles but my TV does not display the subtitles, I want to convert that mkv to mp4 with the subtitles burned in like at the bottom of the screen so that it can show in my TV. I don't have the subtitle since it is embedded in mkv so what do I do?
These are great tutorials David and your presentation is excellent. However, I have followed the instructions twice (several hours each time) with both an .ass file and a .srt file. But when I play back the result the subtitles do not show. What am I doing wrong?
bro you are a champ. thank you. 'been struggling with this for two days. thank you thank you thank you
Worked like a charm! Thank you!
You're welcome!
wow, thank you so much!!! You have solved so much of my problems you can't imagined. Thank you!
Awesome. Thank you so much! This was a perfectly executed tutorial.
You're welcome. Happy to share.
when i open it in an windwos media player ex. i don't hyave sound/ i can only bhear sound in vlc. can someone help me?
Thank you so much this was so helpful and easy to follow 💖
Very excellent informative video. Thank you very much, I always forget how much VLC can do other stuff as well.
Hi David, do you know why the subtitles are shown upside down when it's been converted even though in the playview it's correct? Best
I watched several tutorials, but nothing seemed to work! Clear and easy to understand, thanks a lot! I only have a small problem. I wan to edit my video using DaVinci Resolve, but once I move it onto the media pool and then onto the timeline the audio doesn't seem to work. If I use the original video the audio works. Why does that happen?
How to a change or customize my srt settings after i add an srt file - like change the position , text size ETC ?
Unfortunately after embedding subtitle, when i tried to play the mp4 video on a Sony bravia tv from a usb, the video disappeared. But there was audio. Any suggestions would be great. Thks.
Bro you just saved my day, hope you are doing great, good luck!
Never knew you could do this. I am going to do this without trying to go search for one that has a limited funtion for the free/trail version.
That's really helpful, thanks 🙏🏻
May I ask how to bake in the subtitles without causing the quality of the videos or movies?
As I have found myself with baked-in subtitles video, but have low quality, such as 1080p downscale to 360p even though the properties of the files say 1080p
Question. What if my srt file is a little out of sync. In the viewer, I can go to synchronization an delay the subtitles by about 5 seconds, and they align with the audio perfectly. Can I do that with the convert option, or do I need to do something else?
Hi ... I have downloaded the file with subtitles .. but the film video is only on playlist .. how can I save the file on desktop or any seperate file
thank you, brother. leveled up my movie experiences like this
Great Tutorial! Thank you so so much. Straight-forward and to the point
Thanks.
You might also want to try using Handbrake. Here's how it works.

Thanks.
How about video codec and audio codec? What codec do I put in?
Because I tried everything.....video and subtitle were okay but the audio I cannot hear... Please help me.
Not working with VLC version 3.0.8, followed all steps and still no subtitle on result.
I think they seem to change the options on different releases for this requirement.
I am following the same instruction but in the end the video I am getting is without the footage and subtitle only sound is coming. Please suggest what to do?
Hello, it doesn't seem to work on mine I don't know what the problem is I followed the instructions on the vid do I need to download something b4 it works?
Thank you man, this video is very understandable and helpful. Once again Thank you so much :)
nice, easy to follow tutorial. Thanks!
