My name is Matthew and I live in a van. I lost my job due to "cut backs" from the pandemic of 2020 and decided to seriously restructure my life. I am also a single dad who needed to find a solution that would allow me to remain in my daughter's life and plan for her future. After tons of research into #vanlife, I knew it was for me.
From March 2021 until October 2021 I spent my days building out my Chevrolet Express 2500, which came to be known as "Lucky" and as of October 18, 2021 I have been living in Lucky full time.
The build was done with almost no experience on my end and I used the one incredible tool I had at my disposal - the internet - to learn what I needed to build Lucky into a very comfortable tiny home.
I have always had a bit of a passion for being in front of the camera and really enjoy capturing the world around us. This really played into how I was feeling after almost a year of working from home when I "commuted" from the bedroom to the couch. I was starting to feel extremely unhealthy, unmotivated and despondent. I HATED that, and that's not a word I like to throw around. This new lifestyle gives me opportunities I just didn't have before and I am so excited to be able to share it all with you.
I truly believe we all have the capabilities to turn our lives around, should we choose to do so - and if I can inspire you to shoot for something better then I have done a decent job and that will keep me going.
There is more to life than the consume, consume, spend, spend lifestyle I feel we have all been conditioned to follow and I just want to do the best I can for myself first and foremost. Our time is limited and I do not want to waste another second on a lifestyle that doesn't bring me joy!

At 17:00 one of your Converse and Lindsey picked up the other one on the drive in...or am I thinking of a different episode. I'll remind you where the mattress patches are at and nice knife on the back seat...sort of looks like the one on my door 👀 Boys and their power toys...lol. And the upside down PULL was awesome at 39:07...and that is a perfect example why New Denver is one of my fav BC towns...so "We do things our way". And in my teens to 20's, even early 30's it would of been on like Donkey Kong jumping from a cliff into a lake. Great video Matthew...and it brings to light even our daily routines are as interesting or life-sucking as we view them. The present truly is a gift 🤗

A yoga mat would work to cover the seat hardware and protect the air mattress and would roll up into a compact roll.

Actually, BC doesn’t have limited days for the dump. It depends on municipalities or districts to determine when they are open. Where I live the dump is open from 8-4:30 6 days a week. Also, BC does have a higher cost of living but there is a big difference between shopping in small town hardware stores vs large cities. Groceries in small towns also bad. But if you think it’s bad, try further North in any province or a remote place like Haida Gwaii. Just a lot of generalizations about BC that aren’t necessarily 100% the case. 😊

Prince Rupert is pricey, but Haida Gwaii ... They have an even bigger delivery distance, a 6-hour ferry from Rupert.
I miss having access to the orange store. It is 8-hours away in a good weather day. Miss that place ... Probably a good thing.
@@katherinespong8139 So true about Haida Gwaii. Went there back in the 1990 and $20 bought a loaf of bread, eggs and, some milk. It was a jaw-dropping moment.
@@VanlifePLUS I hear ya however, the title is a flash in the eye whereas the spoken words over the course of 45-60 minutes is where the attention lies and, when you say “In BC ….” , well I hope you see the point 😊 Having lived in BC for my whole life, from North to South coast and travelled all points in between, there are stores, towns and areas you shop and others you don’t shop. Katherine (also commenting here) is bang on about shopping in Haida Gwaii. If you truly want to be shocked by prices… go there.😳 We always buy EVERYTHING before a visit there because even a $4 Dollar Store bug zapper will set you back $30. Anyway, love the channel and the videos even if I’m “in BC” 😂😉

Hi Mat lay some stiff cardboard over the seat hinges and you may well save some nasty leaks in the air mattress. Have a good trip over the rock pile to Calgary . Tom in the Maritines at the NB-NS border

IDK if I want to shell out that much more for specialized lenses... I get a tinted set of glasses and a clear set & swap out for day/night views
Transitions are cheaper for me because the Rx is so expensive so one pair is my reality, and changing out the glasses would drive me mad ... Or, I'd either lose one pair or SIT on them!

My suggestion for preventing liquids in plastic bottles from tipping over and leaking. Store them in a sturdy upright plastic container. I'll email you a photo of the one I use.

It’s so interesting to me that you didn’t make up the bed before you left. I know you mentioned room for your things but then mentioned several small items that could easily fit. Sometimes when I watch you I think you just really enjoy the rituals of packing/unpacking setups etc. Which is perfectly reasonable if so and if not then it’s just my perception.

Driving with the seats down in the back forces the drivers seat forward as well and is a bit more uncomfortable for the distance I had to go. Shorter drives are bareable

That is a very neat dump. Are there bears that frequent it looking for food? Here we have bears and other wildlife including turkey vultures, wolves and eagles.

I wonder if they make external spouts for your rotopax. Doubly so ones that can seal up properly, so you never have to worry about getting fuel all over yourself.
When i car camp i use an electric blanket plugged into my jackery. Works great
No Deisl heater in da jeep either....
You could put a gas heater in Lucky and cut down on the types of fuel you need. *just a thought

In the long run it might be cheaper to donate the blanket and get one that would cost less to wash.

It's crazy how expensive all such stuff has become in Canada and beyond.
Lol, I can go to my local Walmart in the state that I live in buy 6 items, and it'll cost me $45. Canada is not the only place that's suffering.
From inflation and price hikes. But just like in Canada, it depends on what state you're in and what city is going to determine how expensive groceries are. Also where you shop.😅 Heck it now costs $15 for a big Mac meal at McDonald's where I live. No more fast food for me.😂

I like to add a pound of sweet peppers and a can of Rotel crushed tomato's to my taco filling. Oh. And a sweet onion. So good.

When you gonna go all in and buy some wood/plywood? I was also thinking that the electrical could be put on 1/2 inch (OSB) Oh Sh!t Board(particle/Fiber) and get actual plywood/leuan wood 5/8-3/4 for the bed, but you could go for a smaller sized board with enough braces. Thick wood/less braces, thinner wood/more braces.
Wood glue works just as good with a few fasteners without having to take chunks out when disassembling.
