I came here because I remembered a piece of music that I thought Tom would get a kick out of trying, and was going to suggest it... Instead I read the description and got a kick in the pants. :/ This is just really unfair. It seems like it's always the most talented people this sort of thing happens to.
I hope tom not only recovers from the accident being able to walk talk and everything a human does, but also still play like this! I know that if I had spent this much time being good at something in my life, and had this much passion for it, there wouldn't be much joy in living if I lost that ability.
3:33 what even is that left hand?!? I couldn't even play the wrong notes that fast! Tom, it may be that you never see this comment, but you are incredible and nothing will ever change that. My heart goes out to you and everyone close to you, and I wish with every fibre of my being that you are able to get back to being fit and healthy as soon as possible. Anything else is a bonus. Much love from the UK
i'm sure when he's back up to speed he'll be happy you kept showing us videos of him. here's hoping for a full recovery, a guy this brilliant and talented absolutely has to.
I've been following the updates on Caring Bridge. I'm glad to hear Tom is making progress. I wanted to thank Jeff for posting the updates. I can't imagine how difficult this process has been for his family. I also wanted to thank you, Keeper1st (whose name I don't actually know), for reminding us how awesome Tom is. I'm hoping that some day I'll be able to hear Tom play live.
My name is Ron O'Dell. There are videos of some of my compositions played here on RUclips. I'm not a performer myself, though, as evidenced by the few videos of me fumbling through a piece here and there.
Thanks for publishing this Keeper. I was unable to make it to the WCRF this year, and was shocked to hear the terrible news about Tom just this evening. So glad you were able to capture so many of his performances. Hope he's able to play them again.
@@tucker6072 because “Connor” and “Matias” are bots hawking some kind of crap all over the internet. Please join me in reporting both comments to RUclips as unwanted commercial spam.
I'm so glad to hear he's starting to communicate! All my love to Tom and his family, of course. On a separate note, I admittedly laughed at 0:16. "Whaaaaat?"
Oh my God, I only discovered this guy today by watching his Yoshi's Island Athletic theme from 2008. I decided to check his newer videos to see what he is up to now, only to find out the news from the description... I pray that he has a full recovery soon :(
One of the things that struck me when I first listened to Tom was how he casually puts intervals above octave everywhere, like at 0:56 or 1:14. Before it I only used to hear it in the culmination of a piece, it was always a highlight for me. It's more evident in some of your other videos, but I someway decided to comment on it after listening to this play. I like it very much, it's on my to-do list now.
Yeah, playing tenths in the left hand is a hallmark of ragtime, novelty and stride piano playing. Check out this video where Frederick Hodges demonstrates the sostenuto pedal by specifically holding those upper notes to great effect: ruclips.net/video/s1cVBPqQpgg/видео.html
Only tenths? Or are bigger intervals just very rare? Interesting effect indeed, though I personally prefer hearing it with the right pedal instead, it makes the background have more depth and these upper notes can make a little melody as well. Check out the second verse in my latest video if you'd like an example of what I mean.
Well, tenths are generally as much as most people can span, and they provide chord tones assuming the bass note is the tonic or the third of the chord.
Yeah, jumps from one note to another in these even bigger intervals aren't comfortable but they're sometimes a necessity if you want to have a melody in left hand and the bass line to make sense.
The description was really shocking to me, because I didn't know that Tom had such an accident. I am very glad that he is seemingly recovering well. I wish all the best. :)
When I read this description it made me incredibly sad ! I have been watching these videos ever since the Mario Athletic Theme and throughout all this time its safe to say that Tom Brier has become my hero and piano inspiration. If you can, let him know that he is an incredible individual and that the whole channel is rooting for him !!! Get Well Soon Tom
Amen, brother. Tom has inspired me to learn the piano. I have been playing for 2 years now. I never would have tried the piano if I hadn't found this channel.
I pray for a full recovery, I had not realized this was even going on, I often watch Tom play throughout the years when I wanted to be amazed. lots of love from the UK!!!!
Oh man, I had no idea he'd been injured. That's terrible. I've been watching these videos for awhile, and he's such an incredible musician. I hope he makes a full recovery.
I always come back to this video and every time I’m amazed b the left hand movement, unsure if you’ll read this but I hope he’s on his way for better health
I'm hoping he gets well soon, I never saw someone with that much talent! Best wishes from the other side of the great pool (probably the other side of the planet as well)
I never heard of thr accident that took place up until now. It certainly explains the difference in the newer videos compared to the older ones. I've read the recent blog posts and I'm just happy to hear you have an expressive Tom!
This man is far too pure to be in such a state, I'm so happy to hear that there's progress, my thoughts go out to him and his family! GET WELL SOON TOM!
Hi Ron. I’ve been informed about what has happened to Tom thanks to this video…I’m shocked and I feel very sorry for him! I’m checking the updates on CaringBridge and I’m very glad Tom’s is coscient and steadily improving, making progresses day after day! If you happen to visit him, please send him my regards and best wishes for a fast and complete healing! By the way your arrangement of this “Cooking Mama Theme” is a very fine and infectious one and thanks for posting the score of it! Tom’s renditions and ad lib’s are wonderful! I hope he’ll be able to play again soon.
I was elated when I saw the video, but a disappointed at the description, but now I'm hopeful! I hope Tom makes a full recovery. His fans are really pulling for him!
Hoping for a full recovery for this remarkably talented man who has brought joy to so many people and, with friends, has widened my musical horizons with the non-gaming music too.
Oh man, I saw this and was hoping against hope that he had already made a recovery and was back to playing. All the best wishes in the world, Tom. Please make a full recovery!
I love coming across another Tom tune (his composition or others'). Understood why you didn't want to post videos earlier but glad to hear you have more. His rehab is coming along slow but steady and we're all pulling for him. Thanks so much.
Thanks for the videos and updates on Tom. I like to think by watching and enjoying these videos and thinking of Tom we are sending positive vibes his way for a full recovery.
I'm glad to hear that Tom's doing well! I have been following his brother's page, and it's a tragedy what happened to him. I swear, the worst things happen to the best people.
This is great news! Thank you so much for sharing. He's one of my favorite piano players of all time. Got me into this whole youtubing creating content thing so that's awesome! Fantastic!
I really do admire Tom for what joy he's been able to share with the world. I am so glad to hear that he is getting better. I hope he will be able to recover fully.
I hope Tom is doing better. It has been 9 months or so. This man is such an inspiration and it's so sad reading something like that happened to genius like him. Thank you Keeper for you hard work!
It has been just over a year since his accident. He is learning to speak again, and in physical therapy to try to restore more movement in his arms, hands and legs. Apparently he was able to take about six steps in a frame recently.
"Great! Even better than Mama!"
I use this for cooking
should be "wow! even better than mama!"
"It's ok! Mama rill help you!"
"Don't worry! There's always next time!" "Come'mon! You can do it!"
More like Mama knew that she was beat, so she packed her knives and left in awe and euphoria.
I was so happy when I saw the video pop up, but then I read the description...
well he is gettting better it seems

Good news: As of yesterday he's speaking! Just a few words here and there, but he is talking.
HighWideandHandsome what happened to tom? Did he get in a car crash or broke his spine or something?
Oh my god, I hope Tom gets well soon.

Absolutely incredible!
the left hand looks even better in this video because it's one of the few recorded in 1080p HD 60 frames per second, a rarity for tom videos
Watching his hands jump back-forth and precisely hit each key is amazing.
he was a sight reading machine

Every video since the accident has been bittersweet. Honestly I just hope he will be able to play piano again someday.
Sadly, that day will likely never come. The negligence showed to him by his family so they could gain more money out of it likely played a part

Nothing but the utmost respect for Tom. Get well soon, man, I only want you to have the chance to do what you love after giving us so much already.

True, in slower pieces like you linked to. For the faster speed of ragtime it's not so easy to do more than tenths, of course.
What a trip down memory lane. I haven’t played a Cooking Mama game in years.
Totally forgot the tune but instantly recognised it as soon as i heard it. Love to tom and hope he recovers well
