I believe ketchup was introduced to the Philippines during one of the wars, when the Americans left there were no tomatoes so they made it from bananas.
Tomatoes were introduced by the Spanish to the Islands but yes WWII caused a shortage which led to the invention of Banana ketchup as substitute since there’s an abundance of bananas. Bananas can grow in the wild while tomatoes needs farmers to thrive.
We grew up in San Diego then retired to Missouri. Yes, it's way cheaper, but there's no Seafood City. I miss that store so much!! Especially the hot bakery, and the hot deli which are absolutely outstanding!
I just moved out of San Diego, left last year to move to KS. You have to go through 4 asian stores and still not get what I need. Now, the closest is the one in TX:(
it's popularly said to have originated in World War II, when American soldiers brought tomato ketchup to the Philippines. Since tomatoes were hard to find at the time but bananas were plentiful, Filipino locals adapted it to a banana version.
The banana flour is actually the flower that is on the banana tree. The green or raw jackfruit is the one where u can cook it and it is like a meat substitiute. The ripe sweet one you eat it like a fruit just the yellow parts so good!
Those bananas you bought are for cooking. They are better when the are ripe. They can be boiled with or without the peel , or fried. I like them peeled and sliced then wrapped in egg roll wrappers and fried ( turon)😋
Sweet plantains is considered an everyday snack and very common. Can be cooked into a variety of different things. Not just turon. There is maruya (tagalog name not to be confused with the bisaya maruya), bananacue, ginangang (grilled), fritters (pinaypay because it is shaped like a fan), and boiled.
Thank you for sharing this. I miss Seafood City, my one stop shop for everything. I used to live in San Diego and always within reach to one. Now im in Kansas and even after going through 4 asian markets, i cant even get all ingredients i need.
Taro is added as vegetable for sinigang...to make it soupy and creamy; we do plant melon or cantaloupe, jicama or singkamas both endemic in the Philippines both can be both eaten with Bagoong or shrimp paste just like ripe mangoes...while banana blossoms is added to other dishes that calls for it. Purefoods is the brand we use for Sopas and Pinoy Spaghetti...
Hope you guys will also try making Turon. It’s sliced ripe bananas wrapped in lumpia wrapper with brown sugar and then deep fried. Great for snacks and dessert. 😊
Asians have similar taste pallettes and uses similar or the same ingredients so it just makes sense that asian stores will have different asian countries products.
16:00 The reason why banana ketchup exists is due to a tomato shortage back in the commonwealth era (pre ww2 american colony philippines) and they supplemented bananas which was more abundant than tomatoes back then.
Ketchup predates tomatoes and was originally Chinese. Banana sauce comes in spicy which I prefer, it is still pretty mild. I use as a dip for pot stickers and such though I might prefer sweet chili sauce. Banana sauce is good on omirice or eggs though, better than ketchup.
I find this so interesting, we have absolutely nothing like this where I’m from. If I remember rightly didn’t you or Judy used to make some really good Lumpia. I have to check to see if I can find a Lumpia recipe here on your channel?
I told my nephew to be patient like a circle because of your family. Side note, I know you said you had to cut your trip short, but were you able to find the kind of noodles that Mama used for pancit palabpk at Seafood City?
Some of the jarred fruits you’re showing are also used for pinoy fruit salad, so not all of those are for halo halo, don’t forget the beans! It’s condensed milk for halo halo. Also the ube ice cream and leche flan topping, so yummy to eat rn during this heat wave!
Now where outside of San Diego are there enough Filipinos to have a big ole grocery store like this!!? I’m always curious . At home my high school was majority Filipino. I’m always pleased to find Filipino communities when I travel outside of home. Feels more like home .
After war, there are shortage of tomatoes, farmers couldnt farm and since Philippines has bunch of bananas that grows everywhere, and probably to mimic the color of tomatoes they dye it red. It has been like that since then
You get zero Manners/No Inconsideration for others when shopping at ANY "International Markets" LOL People want to have a damn "Conversations" while the lines are long, or you got the ones running back to get something they forgot! Or like the one Benji mentioned "Breaking a $100" while cashiers is ringing you up. LOL 🤦🏾♀️😂😂 Like dude can we pay attention to one thing? 😒😂😂 Or you got the cashiers on the phone talking with someone while ringing you're shite up. 😂😂 It's so Interesting when you're at these Markets! 😂😂 But i Love it! 😁😂❤
This is mama’s store ❤ missed her grocery vids. So organic, no editing needed.
Your littles are always very chill in the grocery store & seem to be content at looking around & of course a snack. Love Bella

Maria Orosa invented the banana ketchup during the 2nd world war, there's not a lot of stories about her but there's a street that's named after her
We use shrimp paste in both ripe and green mangoes especially when we make ensalada, a mango salad with red onion and tomatoes
Those mangoes are from Mexico, with thicker skin and has an after taste. Mangoes grown in the Philippines have thinner skin and no after taste at all.

Is Seafood City in National City?
@@InspiredByEbonyLove There’s one in Mira Mesa.

No bagoong (fermented shrimp) is for the mango na hilaw (unripe) only to complement the sourness
I agree, Minced garlic in water has a chemical taste. I switched to minced garlic in olive oil. Badia and Walmart's Great Value brand sells it.
Mince and freeze is my current style. No chopping for a month

The area near the entrance of Seafood City in Toronto is Diabetes Center. That section has thousands of pounds of sugary Pastries and Desserts.

Asians have similar taste pallettes and uses similar or the same ingredients so it just makes sense that asian stores will have different asian countries products.
My wife is Filipino and loves this store. We drive over 5 hours from Idaho to stock up on Filipino supplies there at least twice a year!
I got the costco kewpie one time, never again. I get the pamana brand vinegar and soy sauce from seafood city here in chicago.

Condensed milk? Umm evaporated milk mostly…
Evaporated milk for halo halo. In halo halo places, they would have sugar on your table so you can adjust the sweetness.
I hope you can try cooking tofu sisig
Banana Blossoms may also be used as meat substitute. You can make patties with it. Tastes just like meat. For real

Keso is the filipino word for cheese too. Just different spelling than the spanish queso.
Lots of Spanish words in Tagalog dialect huh?
5:55 benji i believe thats a wrong photo of a banana blossom

Why do you pronounce syrup sarap?
It’s this new invention called AN ACCENT .
Sarap is the word for “delicious” in Tagalog.
Oregon needs a Jollybee! 😁
