Thank you! I also have a 15 Best Songs of New Order post up over on my blog that you may enjoy: brethelm.blogspot.com/2012/04/everythings-gone-green-21-best-songs-of.html
1. Technique - loved your comment on Run - best track is the outro, 'Dream Attack' 2. PC&L (swaps with #3) - Your Silent Face (aka KW1) is the best thing on a great album 3. Music Complete (swaps with #2) - try the extended album if you can. 4. Low-Life - also, Sunrise for *that bass* 5. Brotherhood - they played All Day Long at MIF17 gigs, hardly a dry eye - an old classic album track 6. Movement - finding their feet, understandably 7. Sirens - surprise shout out for the daftly titled "Dracula's Castle" 8. Republic - Troubled times, troubled session 9. Get Ready - apart from Crystal, the spirit doesn't break through
Great vid and surprised not to see too much New Order content like this on RUclips. My favourite albums (favourite song) 1. Power Corruption & Lies (Leave Me Alone) 2. Brotherhood (All Day Long) 3. Music Complete (Nothing But a Fool) 4. Movement (Senses) 5. Waiting for the Sirens' Call (title track) 6. Technique (Run) 7. Low-Life (Perfect Kiss) 8. Get Ready (60 Miles an Hour) 9. Lost Sirens (I'll Stay With You) 10. Republic (World) All Day Long is my overall favourite song by New Order.
Enjoyed your countdown. New Order are a tricky beast to rank. Mine would probably be 1) Technique Perfect summation of their 80s rule. Very cohesive. Amazing tunes. 2) PC&L The emergence of the NO sound. Love the DIY feel, and a sense of new frontiers. 3) Lowlife Crazy here-goes-nothing synth pop brilliance. 4) Brotherhood Nice balance between rocking songs and synth stuff. Love the minimal artwork. 5) Get Ready Great semi comeback. Killer tunes. Noisier guitars due to abscence of Gillian? 6) Movement OK so I need to revisit this I think. I feel it might climb given more chance. 7) Republic Regret is stone cold classic. But some sterile production and underwritten songs dominate the 2nd half 8) WFTSC Again probably need to give this more time - I do love the title track 9) Music Complete Fine, but without Hook feels - ironically - incomplete
I really like " Get Ready ". I think it's a very good Comeback album, just when it looked like New Order had disappeared for good. But their debut album will always be my favorite. Would However like to acquire their second one.
Wow. I absolutely cannot believe that there is someone who would rank the albums almost the exact same way that I do. I think literally the only changes I'd make would be swapping 8 and 6. I NEVER meet people who like Movement as much as I do.
Wow Bret, I would have to give you a capital A for your New order knowledge. Geez, you really know their music. You made a strong point when talking about 'Movement'. They were still feeling themselves out as to who does what in the band. My favorite track is the opener too. 'Dreams Never End'. Well alright, we both agree on their best album. "Technique' got played a lot when I bought it. I actually bought the UK release because Newbury Comics sold it first. > I only got to see New Order live once in the 80's. One of the backup bands that night in 1987 at the Great Woods Amphitheater was none other than Gene Loves Jezebel. The other was a band you may know called Echo and The Bunnymen. Not a bad triple bill at all. Why don't they have shows like this one anymore? Excellent post Bret. I love when you do these ranking videos!~ Rob/Boston
Paneeks1960 Rob, thanks for all of the kind words. I remember you mentioning that tour - I think it was the same one that came through here at a venue called Compton Terrace. How great it would be if those 3 bands hit the road together again. :)
Bret awesome dude my #1 is Technique #2 Power Corruption Lies my all time fave songs Touch by the Hands of God and State of the Nation Bret your ranking was on the money I have to spin some New Order this weekend great video.
Great video Bret!. Been waiting for this ranking video for a while. :) For the most part, I agree. I would have put Republic up a little higher on the list, but all of these albums are great!
Technique is, to me, the best album I've ever heard. The mighty outro triplet of Mr Disco, Vanishing Point and Dream Attack is unstoppable. The definitive box set series of these albums are being put together with such love and attention to detail that I cannot recommend them highly enough.
Fantastic video Bret. I was a huge New Order fan and was fortunate enough to see them many times in the UK in the mid 80s. I still have every album, 7" and 12" they released up until Brotherhood - after that I thought they went a bit too "poppy" for me and I moved onto what I perceived to be "cooler" bands at the time. (Probably Metallica or something!) As a result of this I missed out on all their later albums and I'm ashamed to say I haven't even heard Technique.
Woah! This is a really difficult one Bret! I'm always drawn to Lowlife. I think I'm going to have to re review all of these myself to come up with my own decision. The UK version of Lowlife has some great artwork . It's actually covered with quite fragile "tracing" paper
StaffsOwl Hey John. I remember you showing your copy of Low-life several fortnights ago. I never come across one of those - very cool. Looking forward to seeing your ranked list. Please post it here when you've got it done.
Thanks Brett for your insight to New Order. Yes Ceremony is just Killer.....I enjoy all the 80 albums..... JD an NO had such a vast difference in sound with many songs, as we can hear. I want to know how did NO transition to this "NEW" dance/syntho pop sound in such a short timeframe Was it Gillian's Synth? Who was the driving force? .... Bernard Edward Sumner guitar is brilliant and influenced the heck out of me. Peter does have a book I need to get Unknown Pleasures: Inside Joy Division.....thanks Steve
Great video, Technique then Low Life for me. Republic I think gets unfairly panned and is pretty under-rated, Sumner is quite close to his A-game lyrically on that album.
I think Technique is pretty good, but I'm surprised that people are ranking it so high. I'd probably put it as 5th, with either Power Corruption and Lies or Substance (if you want to count it) as my favourite. I also think Get Ready is underrated, and probably the best album of the 2000s-2010, though Music Complete is nice too
Movement. It is a monumental album, very ambitious, very unique. The Him is a powerful highlight on that album. Crashing bass and drums. Perhaps the album needs a remaster.
Man that is real close to where I would rank my favorites. I'm with you on Republic, but it's tough to rank the album so low when one of my favorite NO songs, Regret, is on there. If substance where considered a 'studio album' that would be #1 for me. 8) Get Ready 7) Waiting for the Sirens Call 6) Republic 5) Low Life 4) Movement 3) Brotherhood 2) Power Corruption & Lies 1) Technique
hi Bret, another good showing. i just saw hooky and the light in a small room at Hobart, Tasmania on sunday night. how's that for tassie oak! brilliant show - 3 hours with hooky supporting the new order show as joy division. i have some good video maybe i should upload if it's cool to do so. i find it hard to go past movement because it's as close as one can get to the spirit of joy division, especially with Martin at the desk. otherwise i would have to go with technique, fave tracks being guilty partner and mr. disco, strangely enough. i read technique is hooky's favourite NO album too. good to see ya. cheers, W
***** Hey Warren! Man, I've yet to see Hooky live - I've only caught his DJ set here, but he's never brought the band to PHX. Tassie Oak! Ha! Would like to see your footage whenever you get the time to upload. Thanks for stopping by - hope all is well. - Bret
It's hard to be excited by Brotherhood. I would call it a very consistent album, very technique and a little opaque. I kinda like it but it took me a while to get into it.
Hi Bret All good as always Interesting list - Substance I've got and the last 3 studio albums As with a few people, singles better in my mind but will look out a couple of collectors editions of Technique and a couple of the earlier albums Cool
paul elliott Thanks Paul. I think you'd really dig their debut, Movement. That deluxe edition I talked about it in the video has some great bonus tracks. Cheers. - Bret
1. Technique 2. Brotherhood 3. Low-life 4. Power, Corruption & Lies 5. Music Complete 6. Movement 7. Get Ready 8. Waiting for the Sirens’ Call 9. Republic 10. Lost Sirens
I agree about Republic. That album could have and would have been my favorite if it didn't fall off the cliff after the first three amazing tracks. Spooky (4th track) was good, but it was all downhill from there outside of Special
Great video, I had a question about Movement...What's the story behind the cream-colored cover you have there? All the copies I see online have a light blue cover on Movement. Curious about that variation! I only own P, C & L, and the Ceremony and Temptation singles, so I'm a pretty new collector to New Order. I may have to get Technique next based on your strong recommendation.

Hi Bret, awesome video and list! I realised how many New Order albums i actually miss in my collection! I remember when "Republic" came, i was very doubtful about it, since they dropped the synthesizers, but when i heard it i really liked it. Sometimes you shouldn't listen just with your feelings but with your ears as well. ;) You seems to have a lot of knowledge, can you answer me: I have a New Order-song that i have huge childhood memories from, it's "Subculture" from "Low life". But it is in a album remix on "Low life" and i have only found it on one other album, the collection "1987". But it is completely erased from all other compelations, like it never existed. Is there a special reason for "Subculture" almost being banned by the band?
JörgenS Thanks for tuning in to the video, Jorgen. Their is a remix of 'Subculture' that is included on the second CD of the 2008 Collector's Edition of Low-life that I mentioned in the video - it's the John Robie remix. I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for.
Worst track on Lowlife. Awful 7, not enough effort in making and weak all round music. Rubbish aswell.. Ceremony, Temptation and Thieves like us are much more advanced and more imaginative in creating a record. They had massive charts success with Blue Monday and Regret. The Perfect kiss and Bizzare love triangle did extremely well, but I don't think they really cared much about having a number 1, hit single. World and Krafty were terrible choices for singles. They had fine time and round & round, that would get more attention at the clubs than played on the radio stations! Temptation is probably one of my favourite live songs ( & Bernard's). That is brilliant and joyful for the melody and sound. Dream Attack and Age of consent are ace songs for the bass riffs and keyboards. The Village is a wonderful song for the rhythms and guitar. Confusion was a real gem of 12' Radio stations never liked playing because of their time. New order now only seem to play singles and the best Records from Joy Division. As it is and when it was 🎸🎹🥁👍
Thank you! I also have a 15 Best Songs of New Order list that I put up back in 2012: brethelm.blogspot.com/2012/04/everythings-gone-green-21-best-songs-of.html
***not counting music complete because I havent listened to it much*** Get Ready Waiting For The Sirens Call Republic Power Corruption & Lies Brotherhood Movement Low-life Technique
personal top 3 is Technique, Brotherhood & Get Ready I feel like GR in particular is often wildly overlooked, it seemed the opposite when it was first released but by this point I just think it's just such a strong set of songs brought together with some of the best production work on any of their albums. Low-Life & PCL come close, & I'm definitely one of the people who finds Republic underrated, but man I love those 3.
I ranked the same albums before you could influence me and there's little difference. WftSC got higher ranking with me due to the amount of replay value I seemed to get out of it. Fav song: Everything's Gone Green. Saw this track done live in 1987 with a false start of that heavy sequencer coming from matronly Gillian doing something with a CD drawer in a tall rack of stuff. Movement was an album I loved to myself b/c most of my friends in the 80's didn't know that one. Doubts Even Here was so moody. Tracks of the first side had visible patterns on the vinyl. Isn't it interesting Hook is touring what's largely considered the best and worst albums right now? 1. Power corruption & lies 2. Technique 3. Movement 4. Waiting for the Siren's Call 5. Brotherhood 6. Low-Life 7. Get Ready 8. Republic
Not too bad of a list. My ranking: 1) Movement 2) Low-Life 3) Power, Corruption, and Lies 4) Brotherhood 5) Get Ready 6) Technique 7) Waitin For the Sirens Call 8) Republic
NO albums are hard to rank (they are a "singles band" ultimately), but here we go: 10) Lost Sirens 9) Waiting for the Sirens Call 8) Get Ready 7) Republic 6) Music Complete 5) Brotherhood 4) Low Life 3) Movement 2) Power, Corruption and Lies 1) Technique
William Frederick William, I watched a live video of 'Your Silent Face' the other night here on YT - it was from a 2005 show in Glasgow (I think) - I definitely recommend it, if you haven't already seen it. Scrolling throw the lists that you and others have shared, it appears that we all have #8 - 6 in common! I'm waiting to see if someone will put Republic as #1. Thanks!
Bret Helm's Life On This Planet Blog Bret, it's frightening how humans can compose such musical splendor. Really. That song climbs my spirit to unthinkable, empyrean, and metaphysical heights. If I could only...
Great list. Personally I was never *really* into New Order. I mean, I like them well enough and I have all their albums and such. I'm pretty sure I have the original 12in with the floppy disk sleeve for Blue Monday stuffed away somewhere in my collection. But I rarely listen to an entire album. Select songs are usually on my phone but that's about it. I'm totally into Joy Division but for whatever reason New Order never really did it for me.
Technique was sort of the culmination of everything they had done up to that point. It's was New Order's zenith, and unfortunately, when you're at the very top there's only one way to go from there.
as a long time NO fan ( from joy division days) music complete : sounds like an electronic/barney album but badged as 'new order' waiting for a sirens call : was drivel except krafty get ready was patchy... a good single and a couple of tunes worth re listening.. but had some you'd always skip. republic - 3 singles were okay the rest were more like an electronic album/barney album but badged ' new order' .. not much bass playing on this album Technique: was pretty good .. opening single was a bit boring though... vanishing point is excellent mind you. Brotherhood: quite a mix of styles in this one.. pretty good low life: wiki is wrong perfect kiss was NOT on the album when released.. the album was excellent Power, Corruption & Lies; SUPERB .. a masterpiece movement : a hybrid of post joy division and the new band finding their feet - perfection
Would be Technique for me. But All The Way is too much of a rip off of The Cure Just Like Heaven that it goes to number 2. Although maybe The Cure first ripped that riff from Wire- Ex Lion Tamer. Yes I know The Cure ripped NO first.
Love that you ranked Movement so high. It's my all-time favourite album and one which I don't think receives enough praise.
Thank you! I also have a 15 Best Songs of New Order post up over on my blog that you may enjoy: brethelm.blogspot.com/2012/04/everythings-gone-green-21-best-songs-of.html
Technique is one of the greatest albums of all time
1. Technique - loved your comment on Run - best track is the outro, 'Dream Attack'
2. PC&L (swaps with #3) - Your Silent Face (aka KW1) is the best thing on a great album
3. Music Complete (swaps with #2) - try the extended album if you can.
4. Low-Life - also, Sunrise for *that bass*
5. Brotherhood - they played All Day Long at MIF17 gigs, hardly a dry eye - an old classic album track
6. Movement - finding their feet, understandably
7. Sirens - surprise shout out for the daftly titled "Dracula's Castle"

My favourite albums (favourite song)

Technique is #1 for me too!
Verve Starsail :)
Great video man. I enjoyed your insights into each album
Thank you!
Enjoyed your countdown. New Order are a tricky beast to rank. Mine would probably be
1) Technique
Perfect summation of their 80s rule. Very cohesive. Amazing tunes.
2) PC&L
The emergence of the NO sound. Love the DIY feel, and a sense of new frontiers.
3) Lowlife
Crazy here-goes-nothing synth pop brilliance.
4) Brotherhood
Nice balance between rocking songs and synth stuff. Love the minimal artwork.
5) Get Ready
Great semi comeback. Killer tunes. Noisier guitars due to abscence of Gillian?
6) Movement
OK so I need to revisit this I think. I feel it might climb given more chance.
7) Republic
Regret is stone cold classic. But some sterile production and underwritten songs dominate the 2nd half
8) WFTSC
Again probably need to give this more time - I do love the title track
9) Music Complete
Fine, but without Hook feels - ironically - incomplete
Thanks for sharing your list. Enjoyed reading your comments. - Bret
Thanks Brett, I love Their Singles.I will check out the albums now. Thanks for the post.

Incredible band.
hey Bret, nice job on the ranking. Power Corruption and Lies is my #1, hands down. That album always did it for me. Take care
James Laubhan Thanks James!

It's hard to be excited by Brotherhood. I would call it a very consistent album, very technique and a little opaque. I kinda like it but it took me a while to get into it.
Awesome video!

5) Brotherhood
And an Honourable Mention to ‘Substance’
I agree about Republic. That album could have and would have been my favorite if it didn't fall off the cliff after the first three amazing tracks. Spooky (4th track) was good, but it was all downhill from there outside of Special
Everyone Everywhere is a fine song.
They played it at Reading Festival 93'
1)Lowlife
2) Power, corruption & lies
3) Get Ready
5) Republic
I really like "Times Change". Republic would be a very well-received album except that it's judged by New Order standards.
Great video, I had a question about Movement...What's the story behind the cream-colored cover you have there? All the copies I see online have a light blue cover on Movement.
Wow, Movement high!
Technique was sort of the culmination of everything they had done up to that point. It's was New Order's zenith, and unfortunately, when you're at the very top there's only one way to go from there.
Not much point in this simply because a huge part of their catalogue just doesn’t appear on albums.
Great non-album singles aside, the point was to rank the actual studio albums.
Rate frank Sinatra please!
Noted!
Technique
Brotherhood
Low-Life
PC&L
Movement
Guess I think they got better with each album up until Technique. Haven’t listened enough to the rest.
as a long time NO fan ( from joy division days)
music complete : sounds like an electronic/barney album but badged as 'new order'
waiting for a sirens call : was drivel except krafty
get ready was patchy... a good single and a couple of tunes worth re listening.. but had some you'd always skip.
republic - 3 singles were okay the rest were more like an electronic album/barney album but badged ' new order' .. not much bass playing on this album
Technique: was pretty good .. opening single was a bit boring though... vanishing point is excellent mind you.
Brotherhood: quite a mix of styles in this one.. pretty good
low life: wiki is wrong perfect kiss was NOT on the album when released.. the album was excellent
Power, Corruption & Lies; SUPERB .. a masterpiece
movement : a hybrid of post joy division and the new band finding their feet - perfection
Technique contains only enjoyable tracks. I find Mr Disco strangely catchy. Guilty Partner might be the only weaker track but it's still nice.
Low Life best album hands down

regularburns Right on, thanks for the list!
Would be Technique for me. But All The Way is too much of a rip off of The Cure Just Like Heaven that it goes to number 2.
Although maybe The Cure first ripped that riff from Wire- Ex Lion Tamer.
Yes I know The Cure ripped NO first.
