- Let's learn about Balti people, their history and culture at the last village of India near LOC called Turtuk!!
Turtuk is a remote and picturesque village located in the Leh district of Ladakh, India. It's situated close to the Line of Control (LoC), which separates India and Pakistan in the region. Turtuk is a relatively lesser-known destination in Ladakh, but it has been gaining popularity among tourists in recent years due to its natural beauty, unique culture, and the opportunity to explore a less-traveled part of the region. Turtuk is situated in the Nubra Valley, which is known for its scenic landscapes and is one of the most beautiful valleys in Ladakh. It's located approximately 205 kilometers from Leh, the capital of Ladakh.
Turtuk is primarily inhabited by Balti people who have a distinct culture and language. The culture here is quite different from the rest of Ladakh due to historical ties with Baltistan, which is now part of Pakistan-administered Gilgit-Baltistan. The Balti culture, with its unique architecture, cuisine, and traditions, is prevalent in Turtuk. The village is known for its traditional Balti-style houses made of stone and wood. The architecture of these houses is quite distinctive and reflects the cultural heritage of the region.
Turtuk is famous for its apricot orchards. The village is often referred to as the "Apricot Capital of India." The lush orchards, with their pink and white blossoms in spring, offer a stunning backdrop to the village. Balti cuisine is a highlight of Turtuk. Visitors can savor traditional dishes such as "Kishir and buckwheat based dishes. The apricots of Turtuk are known for their sweetness and are used in various culinary preparations.
Turtuk offers breathtaking views of the Karakoram Range and the Shyok River. The landscape is dotted with terraced fields, monasteries, and picturesque villages. The village has a historical mosque, royal house, and other sites that offer insights into its past and heritage.
Turtuk is an excellent destination for travellers looking to explore a less-visited part of Ladakh, experience a unique culture, and enjoy the stunning natural beauty of the Nubra Valley. However, due to its proximity to the Line of Control, it's essential to check for travel advisories and permits before visiting Turtuk, as certain areas near the LoC may have restricted access.

Good morning ma'am.As a telecom engineer, I was in Nubra valley. Was in CP ,Turtuk for setting up communication area.Year 1987. That time few people lived. Now it's so beautiful. Thanks govt of India for taking care of locals of Turtuk. Jai hind
Happy to read your encouraging comment sir...
The dignity and respect of our armed forces is unmatched and so is the bravery courage and valour Jai Hind bharat mata ki jai ho vande Mataram
Lived in Turtok during early 1990s for 2 years. Was in-charge of artillery unit there, made many friends. My wife too spent about 20 days there.
It's so nice to see how developed it's now.
During my time, electricity was only few hours at night, one school and dispensary existed. Road from Partapur didn't exist, but was a rocky track.
happy to read your comment sir ....
Love from Arunachal Pradesh ❤❤❤🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳
