- When we think of the best carpets from India, we probably think of Cashemre carpets. Here is the surprise for you all. Bhadohi, located in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, is renowned for its intricate and high-quality carpets. Bhadohi carpets got its GI tag in 2009. That itself says about the uniqueness of the carpets made in this city of Uttar Pradesh. India is the biggest exporter of handmade carpets in the world. The town contributes to 90% of those handmade carpet exports from India. Bhadohi is also referred to as the "Carpet City" or "Carpet Capital of India" due to its prominent carpet weaving industry.
Historical Roots: The tradition of carpet weaving in Bhadohi dates back several centuries, with influences from Persian designs and techniques. This craft flourished under the Mughal Empire, which patronized artisans and introduced sophisticated weaving techniques.
Types and Designs - Bhadohi carpets are known for their diverse range of patterns, which include traditional floral motifs, geometric shapes, and contemporary abstract designs. Popular styles include Persian, Turkish, and modern patterns.
Materials Used - The carpets are typically made from high-quality wool, silk, or a blend of both. Wool is sourced from regions like Kashmir and Australia, ensuring a soft and durable product.
Knotting Technique: These carpets often employ the Persian knotting technique, known for its durability and precision, resulting in a high knot density that enhances the carpet’s detail and resilience.
Manufacturing Process
1. Handwoven Masterpieces: Each carpet is meticulously handwoven by skilled artisans, a process that can take several months to complete depending on the size and complexity of the design.
2. Dyeing: Natural dyes derived from plants, minerals, and insects are commonly used, ensuring vibrant and long-lasting colors.
3. Finishing Touches: After weaving, carpets undergo a finishing process which includes trimming, washing, and stretching to ensure they lay flat and retain their shape.
The carpet industry is a significant economic driver in Bhadohi, providing employment to thousands of artisans and contributing substantially to the region's economy. The craft of carpet weaving is a vital part of even Bhadohi’s cultural heritage, passed down through generations. Artisans take immense pride in their work, which is reflected in the quality and artistry of the carpets.
Global Recognition - Bhadohi carpets are highly sought after in international markets, especially in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. They are featured in luxury homes, hotels, and museums around the world.
Awards and Certifications - The carpets have received numerous accolades for their quality and craftsmanship, and many producers are certified by organizations that ensure fair trade practices and sustainability.
Modern Challenges - The industry faces challenges such as competition from machine-made carpets, rising raw material costs, and the need for modernization without losing traditional techniques.
Innovation and Adaptation - To remain competitive, some Bhadohi carpet producers are incorporating contemporary designs and using advanced technology for quality control while preserving the artisanal weaving techniques.
Bhadohi carpets stand as a testament to the region's rich artistic tradition and continue to be a symbol of luxury and craftsmanship in the global market. I hope you enjoy watching this documentary as much as I enjoyed making it.

Your vlogs just keep getting better and better. Am so happy to learn about India ❤
Love your videos I want to visit all the places you had visited in south India being a south Indian I have not seen most of them very inspiring 😊thank you for everything want u doing for us.
The video was lovely and very educative . But 2 things I would like to mention. Indians are rich enough to buy these carpets but the problem is lack of awareness from buyer and transparency from seller. In Delhi they sell carpets for any price. There should be authentic shops. Also you never mentioned the price. It would be nice to know the selling price in India. Can you buy them in Bhadoi
We recently came across your channel and really enjoyed watching your videos
Thanks to you for giving exposure to these hard working people, and creating a different content which will help many people
Keep the good work going

Thanks a ton :)
Very informative and interesting video. Good effort on reaching out this far. When we talk about Make In India and I would really like to buy things from this Brand. hopefully the government subsidies this to improve the buying capacity of people in India and curb the dependency on the Importing country.
An enlightening vlog. Thank you so much. Please try to cover Firozabad, the city of bangles in future.
Beautiful sharing 😊 thank you ❤
Nice vlog! It's great to see someone exploring and sharing information about carpet making. However, the saddest part is that the makers do not get fair compensation for their hard work.
I agree! but the final product goes through so many steps and at every step, there is so much work and resources used. So I guess, the price of final product is distributed among several units which make the compensation look low on the lower end. Probably!
Hello good to see you again lnever missed your videos ❤❤❤ you from Nagaland

Thanks for detailed video about Bhadohi carpets.
What is the price of these carpets ? Please let us know ?
Interesting vlog. Wool goes all the way from New Zealand and then the carpet is made in India and then goes back to New Zealand and other countries for sale at incredible prices. Wondering what these hardworking people might be getting for their unique and special art ❤.
As they mentioned, they are struggling.

Enjoyed watching the informative vlog, however how do we contact these manufacturers if we want to buy from them? The ultimate goal is to buy "locally" made products so contact details must be shared ...
Hello Desigirl. Im following you since a year and i like your artisan series, where you show how they produce. Can you tell me if there is a tour to see how they produce the carpet, the banarasi saree or chikankari embroidery. I want to experience the same as you show in your video. Im not indian but have indian roots and would so much love to see artisans working and learn about their work and story (i know hindi but cant read). Because of scaming im very cautious about booking anything from any site. If you have a recommendation or how i can experience with artisan...would be great to hear that 🙂
I never knew that carpets are made in UP, Bhadohi thanks but you should have mentioned the approximate price of a carpet since you want locals to buy too
Artisans don't know the actual selling price. My focus was on showing the art of making these beautiful carpets. But yes! feedback taken. Would try better next time :)
Bhadohi and mirzapur both are carpet city of India and both cities are just near banaras
