What I’ve found when using the traditional traps is the crab enter the trap a lot quicker, but they also escape easier. When I pull a conventional trap I don’t use a puller because they are too slow. And as you mentioned, once you touch the rope, you better pull quick. With the Promar style hoop net you need to let it soak a minimum of 60 minutes for best results, but no more than 120 minutes. The crabs have a hard time escaping from these so using a puller is no problem. Next time you go out, attach one of your underwater cameras. It’s really cool to watch how fast they move.
Thanks Chris for the simple and fun video about using hoop nets for catching crab. Didn't know much about what to use and didn't want to spend a lot of money, so you made it easy for me to get started and not break the bank.....
Hey Chris! Thanks for making the time to make this - super helpful as I get ready to buy my first hoop net. I appreciate the effort to inform and entertain!
My Bro and I were on a brothers fishing trip in Tomales Bay at the same time in our 13ft Zodiac style boat! We dropped two conventional and one conical with weighted line with new buoys near the entrance to Tomales. Didn't get any Dungeness keepers (but got two red crab keepers) and lost the conical till the next day. When we found the conical it proved too difficult to bring up for both of us. We tried two angles, then tied it to the boat and with half throttle it snapped at the ring below at the bottom. Then we lost the others a little later! We couldn't believe it, went back over the waypoint several times. Gave up finally. Went to Lawson's Landing to buy some more hoops. Talking to an employee there, found out that the entrance has a habit of taking gear out to sea and back again. Guess it also has a habit of burying gear too. He suggested a certain marker point. That was great advice, got 9 keepers before it got too dark! But we really wanted to leave the entrance that day and hit the Bodega Jetty area where we usually go and hit Elephant Rock for rockfish. We tried two times, breakers were too much for us. Was a great trip. Thanks for the informative video.
Chris, I grew up on Tomales Bay and I ran hoop nets deep like that with my family years before the regulation went into place. The conicals, we found, don't work as fast with dungies as rock crab because dungies don't like to climb. But - they retain crab better. Try zip-tying anchor chains to the bottom of the biggest ring to keep them from dragging. They create lots of weight and friction and if you get one stuck on the bottom the ties break free and you save the pot.
I learned from the lobster fishermen down south you use a 1 ounce weight on the tag end of your hoop net line so your hoop net line is always taught because they will since that and run
It have been my experience here in southeast Alaska that it doesn't matter which one you use.. other than the heavier they are . the less they move and this spooks the crab less...so more get in it. The other thing that affect these traps is... if you don't use the line puller and just hand pull you can start pulling quicker with out the crab noticing the movement..this makes it almost impossible for them to get out. another thing is the bigger net webbing help their legs fall thru easier and keeps them off balance on the retrivial up. Thanks for the video. Cheers from P.O.W. We are the 3rd largest island in the USA..population 5000 people...and tons of easy sea food at our door...visit us some time.
If I’m doing 15minute sets in between pulls I love the standard hoop nets, if I’m letting them soak for a half hour to an hour I like the conical. If I’m letting them soak for hours then I like standard crap traps.
In the same amount of time they are equal, but due to the nature of the conical traps which allow you to trap the crab, they would preform better over the long run
Are you guys north of bodega bay? Been trying to catch lincod all summer 😩 . Going out on Sunday so trying to figure out what direction to go. Love your show thanks for all the info 👍
Hey is it bad heading out from bodega bay? Does it calm down after exiting the rocks? I went one time and it was rough waters so I stayed back in closer to shore to crab. Idk if I went on a bad day but didn't wanna risk it but always wondered. I have came out the golden gate no worries and got better as I went but I wasnt sure about bodega.
nope the 8hp was working well. I had a good opportunity on the new 9.9 and the used market is strong. I use my kicker a lot so didnt mind spending a little for a brand new one. Thanks for watching
can you let me know what exactly is the winch pulling up the pots, i can see the other one is for a down rigger , however ive never seen a net puller ?
My bet is similar - before watching. Had about equal luck when I went last week. Had 2 conventional ones and 6 conicals.

I feel like as long as you you keep the line tight before pulling it it makes a difference. Awesome video you guys killed it 👌🏼🦀
Wow.. amazing catch Chris!
Nice video chris, Thank for shearing..
Good job buddy 👏 👍
Nice job Chris
A bonus of just how compact those nets are
Nice Chris
Interesting test! I would’ve put my money on the conical!

Nice work bro!
Good job pitbull conical hoop net is awesome taller than promar

YOU GUYS KILLED IT, AWESOME JOB! WHAT LAUNCH/MARINA DID YOU GUYS LAUNCH FROM?
In the same amount of time they are equal, but due to the nature of the conical traps which allow you to trap the crab, they would preform better over the long run
Nice 👍 Job Chris!! You gonna do any sturgeon fishing before the end of the year?
Conventional and conical being equal really surprised me. I would had thought conical would win out for sure.
I think it will out perform if it was left for longer. Seeming as it would be harder for the crab to leave.
Are you guys north of bodega bay? Been trying to catch lincod all summer 😩 . Going out on Sunday so trying to figure out what direction to go. Love your show thanks for all the info 👍
Epic awesome
Do they allowed hoop net for the whole California or only certain zones? Thanks
Great vid! Why do you guys put those green or orange harness ropes onto the black harness ropes that the nets come with though? lol
Never been to Bodega Bay, what’s a good launch ramp to use?

I see you have a new 9.9 kicker did the 8hp that came on your boat crap out?
