On old mortar you can use a sawzall with a pruning blade. On hard mortar we use grinders with thin diamond blades 4” or 4.5”. Use the grinder to slice the brick up inside of its space careful not to over cut and hit neighboring bricks then use a hammer and a chisel to pop the mortar. Sometimes this doesn’t work perfectly and you might have to “pistol” the replacement brick basically cut the back off of the brick as needed to put the face of the brick in. Mortar around it. Strike and brush it. Make sure ALL mortar build up is clean the day you do it or else. You should be left with a mortar film. Wash with straight vinegar or faster use muriatic acid and water. Use an acid brush with wood fiber bristles
Uh it would help if I knew what the mud consisted of so that I could recreate the process. Could you please give your recipe for mud? Or if you buy it at the store please explain what I need to look for unless it’s actually called mud. I just don’t want to spend a lot of money but I have two bricks that came off my patio steps. Any help is appreciated.
Definitely not something I could do for a living. Something about the sound of trowels scraping mud onto bricks makes all the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
I’ve seen a hundred videos about this and not a single guy has said how long it takes to set before you rake it. Not in seconds, minutes, or years... why can’t anyone even give a ballpark? Does it take between 5 and 50 ?
Knowledge cost money!!!!!! 😁 but I've heard stick your fingerprint and if it doesnt get moisture is good for raking, and another clue for jointing is if you finger prints on the joint without sinking it in is goog to go jointing, your welcome.
Sloppy as fuck, otherwise good. If you have the mud on your trowel about as thick as the mortar joint, and other side of your trowel is clean, you will make way less of a mess.
Excellent video I was looking for one brick to fix. Now I understand how to do it. Thank you for the video.
Wonderful video with instructions. Please post a video showing how to remove a broken brick. I have few broken bricks near window.
How do you clean up the excess mud on the front of the brick?
I would have soaked all surfaces first for a better bond
It would be very helpful if you show how to dig out a damaged brick without cause more damage, then do the repair.
Lol just beat it tf out

What happens if you don't replace brick?
@@MacMcleskey these type will fall apart. They weren’t great bricks to begin with and tend to lose their faces
Thank you for posting this helpful vid.

@Compliment Thief only because you say so? Seems legit, telling that to a 35yrs mason worker.
