That was the most pleasant surprise I've had all year. I always say there's no such thing as a perfect opera performance, but this is the closest I've come to seeing one. A pure joy from start to finish. Thank you!
I somehow believed that Opera North referred to a touring company from 30 years ago in the Northeastern US. Donald Westwood I believe organized it. So I was astonished by the quality of the voices - all major talents, and the extensive video editing. And the skill of the musicians and conductor. Bravi to all involved may this recording live for centuries.
Magnificent. And a big round of applause for Eric Crozier who wrote the libretto. The whole piece takes the mickey out of small town Englishness to perfection. It's not often you have an opera that's actually funny.
What a cool venue! At a tech level it seems to have caused some audio recording challenges but I'm sure in person it was wonderful. Thank you to all performers for this great show!
Your ears are spot on. (A historical note: Britten and Pears got through a whole bottle of whisky one evening with my mother when they toured Norway in the late 1940s. 'Albert Herring' and 'The Rape of Lucretia' were the musical offerings, I believe.)
Nice production. But I always say that English operas need super/subtitles. I rarely understand what's being said. Fortunately this has closed captions. Otherwise I wouldn't understand most of this.
The acoustic is also far too boomy and as a result the recording isn't very clear but generally you have a very good point. British singers are, generally speaking, quite bad at singing in english in a way that can be understood.

Delightful. Thank you
..., Amei este espetáculo!!!! ..., gosto demais quando cantores e personagens estão na mesma idade.
Bravi Tutti!
At 1:09 when Sid added the alcohol to Albert's cup, did Britten quote from Tristan and Isolde or are my ears deceving me?
He did, indeed! Well spotted!

@@franciswright Great story. The hangovers next morning must have been epic.
@@mamascarlatti I suspect that Acquavit played its part as well ...
Britten is a saver of english opera!

The music although interesting rarely matches the action or the emotions of the characters. Odd.
