We’ve rescued them for 10 years. We have one rescue left and acquired our first puppy just over three years ago. Absolutely love them.

What's an amazing, informative video. I rescued an abandoned Saluki, a year ago - he was tied up in a field and was exhausted and emaciated. He is the most handsome dog I've ever seen in my life and a real gentle and obedient young man. He is frightened of other dogs but lives quite happily with my Lurcher and Bull Whippet. My only regret is I don't have a field to exercise him, but he's happy and safe and I can't imagine life without him.

An absolutely charming portrait of my favorite breed which has owned my heart for over 32 years-the Saluki. Britons, John and Lisa Hudson, give an honest and candid account of this companion breed and hunting machine, both the easy as well as the challenging parts, that will assist a well-intentioned pet-seeker in determining if a Saluki is right or wrong for them.

I know I'm a few years behind, but thanks for the upload. You described my Saluki "Cactus Jack the Desert Dog" to a "T" (he was born on a cactus farm in Damascus and was a gift); I had him in Syria and Saudi Arabia. I trained him well (started the day he was weaned), he worked off hand/arm signals and he could see a gecko from a 100 meters away and run it down, but he never killed anything he tracked down; I once clocked him at 41 mph with my jeep in the Jordanian desert; we would run together around the "DQ" in Riyadh (about 10k) in 48C heat, I would exhaust a camelback hydration bladder and he would take a few laps from his water bowl, then go over and sit on the sofa, as if it was nothing...lol He was either going Mach4 or crashing out on the sofa, very affectionate, loved to touch you, intelligent. I love what you said about how they look back at you and then look off at the horizon and decide to "play" elsewhere - that was Cactus Jack, even with the training; extremely independent, but affectionate with me, I loved that about him; same with the eating, I would leave his food out, and he seldom touched it. I do miss that guy...it was honour having him as a buddy...

The ticking on the ears ,tail, and feet of your Salukis is remarkable. Also I favor the nose ,or bridge of it rather. It appears that you have taken great lengths to maintain this glorious creature. My respect to you.

You can see a saluki is perfect for where it comes from.
Loves running, loves his owner and is loyal. Is a hunter and a great personality to be with. Exactly things Arabs love.
    Truly a Nobel dog

You can't just have one, you could for a while if you go out biking often, but the reality is that this dog needs to hang out with its own breed to be the healthiest. Once you meet a Saluki that decided to love you then you know that you need to preserve this dog's nature, which includes running off-leash and hanging out with its own. When I grow up I hope me and my wife and are like this couple, haha, just spend our retirement admiring the most beautiful things in the world such as this hound.

Lovely video. Just adopted my 3rd rescue saluki. Could never be without one now. They are a breed apart from any other dog I’ve had! You have to alter your pre-conceived ideas of how a dog should be, how to train etc, to have a happy saluki. Knowledge & research is a must. They don’t fit in with the norm!
Also, you put their aloofness into such better words.. they just don’t care about strangers!

This video shows the difference between a show saluki which tend to be bigger, and the working/sporting saluki which is slender and adheres closer to the breed look and function. I am getting my first sporting saluki in 2024 and we will do some confirmation on the side but it will be harder because many judges aren't familiar with what working and sporting saluki's look like versus the confirmation lines they see all the time.

I 've never seen a saluki in person but I would love to. I am too old now to own a saluki but I wish I would have. They are so cool. Thanks for this video. I loved it. 😎

As a dog lover in my mid-50s, I live in a spacious apartment in South Korea in front of the park and enjoys riding a bicycle. Currently, I have been growing the Sighthonud “Italian Greyhound” for more than 10 years. Since I was born, I have always lived with dogs for more than 50 years, but when I was a child, except for “German Shepherd” and “Collie,” in a mansion with a large yard, I have only raised short breeds of small dogs.
I have a wish to raise a large dog shortly before my retirement, so I am going to adopt "Saluki" from Japan. I used to think of “Border Collie” and “Golden Retriever” as big dog candidates before, but I think it is more difficult than “Saluki” in my situation and environment. If you walk for an hour every day, “Saluki” asks if it is okay to welcome you as a dog due to the nature of the breed. It may vary depending on the case, but is it a dog breed that is difficult to raise with a bunch of accidents [training, personality, affection for the owner, maintaining a smooth relationship with other breeds, hair management, etc.] Or would it be better to abandon my greed and adopt the “Coton de Tulear”, a small dog with a completely different personality?
We would be very grateful if you could respond.

i have a saluki cross his dad was a 100% saluki his mum saluki greyhound. i imagined having tufts of hair to groom but sadly he is smooth coated like his mum. everything in the video is true. i do have another dog who is a bull lurcher. so he does have a running companion and they love dashing around my garden. he does have terrible seperation anxiety and when hes left at home he howls like a fog horn. but i have good neighbours and i try not to leave him alone too often. he loves playng with toys especially the squeaky ones but will find a toy in anything even pieces of paper and empty plastic bottles. he is very afraid of strangers, barking at them and backing away. i tell people who think he's a lovely dog and want to pet him to let him come to them rather than approach him. he does destroy things when left alone. so 3 sofas, 3 king size mattresses and a front room carpet let alone all the wooden items with teeth marks in them later ......he is a slow eater. and will only eat what he wants if you put extra in his bowl he leaves it. i do do obedience classes with him have done for 3 years. and he takes a long time to activate any orders you give him. i say you can see the cogs going round in his brain like hes thinking theres something here i have to do what was it... and then he does it. he doesnt like children too much. i dont have any little ones and the only time hes sees them is if we're walking and then they just run past hi making him scared. he invents new things to be scared of everyday. i do the same walk every day but a few weeks ago he decided the post box is scary now he wont walk past it . he hates prams, bikes, kids running, people who walk behind us, and those that do who then walk in front of us, mobility chairs, cars with engines running who are parked on the side of the road anything that is there today that wasnt there yesterday, ie plastic bags and bins on bin day. and changing the route we take. he will lie on the bed with you but only touching your legs.
so if that hasnt put you off. welcome to the best and worst dog you will ever have.

I adopted a beautiful Saluki from Kuwait. She is black with white markings on her muzzle, chest and feet. She doesn't have the markings over her eyes, which seems uncommon. She is gentle, funny and awkward, lol; she missed out on the graceful gene! Adopt a Saluki! They are old souls, free-spirited and peaceable!

Saluki are not up in your business like other breeds are . She compared intelligence to border collie. Border collies also need alot of space but their original purpose was very different than Salukis. I find that border collie, while trainable are way to hyper and distructive. Tricks are their specialty. They are beautiful dogs but they are a herder breed. This doc about Saluki is 99 percent accurate. They are beautiful. They are lovely.

They're great hunters percisely because of how independent they are. The whole point of sighthounds is to go after prey, get it on their own with no instructions, and wait for the hunter.

Lovely except for the advice to not spay or neuter. Dogs, unless bred on purpose, should ALWAYS be spayed/neutered. This is what prevents an overpopulation of unwanted, harmed dogs.
