      imo it's way too dangerous considering the consequence of breaking an unbreakable vow is death. It can be shockingly easy to accidentally get something minor wrong or inaccurate under the pressure. Especially if witnesses were forced to take the vow. It's still a lie, but one they were completely innocent in telling.
      Not to mention threats and coercion, that could turn an innocent person into a tragedy on the stand. It has the same moral and reliability issues.

      @@_maestro7168 they'd still be able to refuse to answer something, and they wouldn't trigger it if it was simply saying something they thought was true but wasn't. I think it'd be worth the risk to have testimony that isn't an outright lie. Another detail to consider is, Veritaserum compels one to speak what they _think_ is the truth. Too often Truth is skewed between what _is_ true and one _thinks_ is true.
    In the second book of Christopher Paolini's Inheritance Cycle, The Eldest, a character spoke to the main protagonist, telling him they were brothers, sharing the same mother and father. The protagonist initially disbelieved him until he repeated the same words in a mystical tongue known as The Ancient Language.
    In The Inheritance Cycle, the Ancient Language is the first and true language of the world, used not only as a means to wield magic but also to speak truly, becuz one cannot speak a lie in the Ancient Language itself.
    But in the third book, Brisingr, it turns out the hero and this other character are not full brothers after all, but half-brothers, born by the same mother. The reason the other character was able to tell the hero they shared the same father in the Ancient Language was becuz he _believed_ it to be true based on what evidence he'd been able to piece together.
    Since he spoke what he believed to be true in the Ancient Language he was able to.
    But the hero later learned from his mentors the identity of his real father and confirm his half-brother had been unknowingly wrong.
    In other words, Veritaserum can be dismissed based on the one who took it speaking what they believe is true even when it contrasts with actual facts... or else someone else (Fudge) thinks the one who took it (Crouch Jr) is deluded

    I always assumed using truth serum would be pointless. Sirius was tried in court for the murder of Peter Pettigrew, which at the time, he believed to be true. Even if they used truth serum, Sirius would have admitted to the murder of Peter (but not to the murder of the muggles and serving Voldemort) as he believed he was avenging for what happened to James and Lily.
    It wasn't until 12 years later, Sirius saw Peter (in rat form) with the Weasleys on the front page of the Daily Prophet that he realizes that he spent 12 years in Azkaban for nothing.

    • @LordTKII

      That is not entirely true. Sirius always knew that he didn't kill Pettigrew and those muggles. He would have used "Avada Kedavra" to kill him. That's how Sirius was able to stay relatively sane in Askaban. He wasn't guilty but he didn't feel innocent either.

      And in the case of Sirius, there were many eyewitnesses that saw him cornering Pettigrew and then an explosion, which killed a dozen muggles and Pettigrew was gone, all they could find of him was a finger. All while Sirius stood there in the middle of the street unscathed and laughing. Also Sirius gave his bike to Hagrid, saying he wouldn't need it anymore and he never disputed his guilt, because he felt responsible for the death of Lill and James.
      But there must have been at least a short hearing, because Dumbledore says to Harry that he had testified that Sirius was the Potter's secret keeper.

    The same time we're introduced to this potion we are introduced to the concept that they can look into a person's wand and find out what their last spells were cast to be. Even if you're not having the same one core you can still see who cast what. That's what they should have been looking at instead of the convict because the wand has no rights it's just an object.
    Which is completely ignored apparently.

    • @LordTKII
      @LordTKII 6 месяцев назад +1

      I agree with that, although I think the "Priori Incantatem" that they used at the World Cup could only show the very last spell cast, so you could mask your incriminating spell by quickly casting something else.
      Harry's twin core situation is unique in that sense as it would have shown every spell ever cast in reverse order had he been able to hold the connection longer.

    Using it in a court setting would also violate the right to not self-incriminate.
    There's also a significant different between empirical truth and personal truth. As an extreme example, if you were to give a flat-earther veritaserum and ask them if the world is flat, they would not be compelled to say that it's roughly spherical, they would speak what they believe to be true. If, for example, you gave it to someone who witnessed a murder that was actually a frame job, the witness would have no knowledge of the actual killer, only what they 'saw', and sight and personal experience are questionable and protean at the best of times.

And at this very point let’s consider that Voldemort (public enemy number 1) had JUST died so I’m sure they were handling that, many Death Eaters were attempting to now escape including dozens turning themselves in and claiming to have been under the Imperius charm. Frank and Alice Longbottom had just been tortured to insanity, Mad Eye was currently chasing (forget who but the guy who took a chunk of his nose). Most likely because of basic human rights. Forcing someone to imbibe a liquid should be considered a crime against humanity. If I'm not mistaken, Sirius was accepting the blame. Probably because he felt himself at fault for letting Peter be secret keeper. Then also failing in bringing him to justice or carrying out vengeance.
    But also, you can imagine that powerful potions like Felix Felicis and Veritaserum are very hard to keep in stock. And we know from Slughorn that Felix is very dangerous, potentially deadly to brew. So the same would likely hold true for a similarly powerful Veritaserum.
    Couple that with Sirius being delirious from grief then being denied redemption or vengeance by Peter's apparent suicide. It is quite obvious why they wouldn't waste valuable stock on a seemingly obvious case while they have much more high profile cases to weed through with Dark Wizards and their allies attempting to feign imperio control or some other type of coercion. With even Dumbledore, the Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot, providing testimony that Sirius acted as the Potter's secret keeper.
    Some Death Eaters might actually have used their final actions in Dark Service to specifically target potioneers capable of providing Veritaserum and destroying their entire stores. If that wasn't already a prime objective for Death Eaters already since they'd want the Ministry hard pressed to find spies and charge those who fall captive in some way. People sometimes understand that war is about supply lines but they might also forget that the enemy will try to disrupt those exact supply lines.
    "WELLL WAI DINT JK ROWLING JUs SED THA DEN?!?!?!?" Because that would be boring and an actually reasonable person would understand that that sort of thing happens regardless of whether or not it's shoved in their face by a boring narrative.

    Now ask any lawyer you want, the amount of clients that have told a lawyer "everything" is literally zero. If might help someone reveal their side, but a lawyer still has to build a case, and that is the hard work we are paying a lawyer for.

    To add on to what others have said in the comment section, another reason Veritaserum is unreliable is because memory is unreliable. People have this notion that memory is like a film reel where memory is this long continuous image but memory isn't that. It's very fragmented and subject to the environment. Age can effect memory. Trauma can effect memory. Even smell can effect memory. Scientist don't even know how memory works exactly. A person could be telling you what they think is the truth and it not be. This is one reason why in the Muggle world, there are statutes of limitations for certain crimes. Twenty, thirty, fifty years after a crime, the likelihood that someone's memory is accurate is low. Even if it is a horrible experience and think they remember the event clear as day, the truth is that they don't. There are gaps in our memory and the brain, in order to make sense of something, fills in those gaps. This is why it is dangerous to have someone testify under oath decades after something. The person may think they are telling the truth but it really isn't the truth. The way I look at it, in order for Veritaserum to work, it would have to be administered under almost perfect conditions and, unfortunately, those conditions rarely exist.

    My thoughts, besides what the suspect perceives as truth, is what I believe to be a commonly overlooked fact of the wizarding world: shelf life
    Many potions are very difficult to brew, often being produced at a time when they're needed, as opposed to having ready-made stocks available. What most forget is that consumable products can't be stored for long periods of time without deteriorating, and the world of Harry Potter doesn't mention vials or flasks being enchanted with any long-term storage protections.
    Thanks to the lack of refrigeration and storage, I'd say that it's a rather difficult task to maintain any long term stocks of many potions that would otherwise be useful to the magical community.

    I'd figure that was flat-out obvious with Sirius Black. There were witnesses to the attack. And using it on death eaters wouldn't do much, considering the death eaters were even hidden from each other. Voldemort was the only one who knew all the death eaters. Honestly, the fact that Sirius black didn't have the dark mark on his arm should've told the ministry something if he was supposedly a death eater. But actions speak louder than words. Plus he was an unregistered animagus, so that wouldn't have helped Sirius's case. Plus due to everything that happened with Pettigrew, if he had said Pettigrew could become a rat, most would think a rat couldn't have survived that attack, plus he cut his finger off as a safety measure. So kind of a catch 22 with Sirius black.

    Veritaserum would have also come in handy when Death Eaters like Lucius Malfoy faked being under the imperious curse to get out of Azkaban during the First War. If I remember correctly, it's not even mentioned until GOF, when it ends up being needed to find out Barty Crouch jr’s story, and Fudge doesn't even believe most of what he said, thinks he was just mad when speaking of working for Voldemort. It's like the time turner in POA, it's only ever used then. It's like JK invented things to solve stuff in a certain book, and only that book, and then later comes up with reasons of why it's never used again.

    "Mr. Potter, during this much more civilized time of peace we hereby sentence you for all-the-heck for showing your wand to your brother without pretty much any trial and definitely with no legal aid for your underaged ars... Oh, hi Dumbledore, funny to see you here."
    "The serum is useless if someone can prepare for it."
    "Yes, I, the undercover agent going against the only person my Dark Lord ever feared, prepared cuck all to the very likely scenario where I would be interrogated by people who totes respect my rights. So it's obvious a person casting fireball on his friend would be way more prepared. Also these never really proven counter-measures totes exist, but any method to draft or detect them do not! Not like Dumbledore could tell Sludge's memories were tampered with as we... Oh, right..."
    "But the serum is super-rare and Deatheaters totes would have all of it destroyed and the makers killed and many, many other counter-measures instead of utilizing it themselves!"
    "Ha! We caught the fake-Moody! Snape, turn the bottle upside down into his throat and see it spills everywhere! Don't even bother making sure he gets what... Three drops was it that was enough?! (Didn't read the books anymore to that point, but I doubt they "administered" the super difficult and crazy rare potion any better in the book either...)"
    "You would need an expert to create and admistrate it (despite administration probably never having been mentioned to be truly an issue...) and even though Hogwarts had two such people teaching it simultaniously even, Ministery of Magic doesn't have that sort of resources to spend! Especially on war criminals from the worst wizarding war Britain had ever faced by then who almost gave away whole wizarding world to muggles in a very public display of violence that mostly affected said muggles!! But threatening it on schoolkids is okay."
    "But your reason are stupid and I really like these books, so you're just stupid!"
    "You'd be surprised how often people say this 'truth' when faced with anything that's considered a flaw in their fandom..."
    "Have you seen how much money Rowling makes?! That's the truth!"
    "Yes, and Taco Bell sells as much food as colon cleanups and people still buy and like them despite the flaws. Don't mean the flaws aren't there."
    Lets just face it that it is a flaw and the more mundane or wondrous the reasons one could come up with why it wasn't such, the same can be done right back for why it is.
    For example, someone very skilled with occulmancy? Yeah. So the whole of Ministery couldn't hire anyone else skilled on it to anyway verify that was such methods being used to fight the serum? No potioneers skilled enough to know what could be done against it and what to do against counter-measures? And it's not like a person could really deceive the potion itself (or the magic really isn't what it's advertised to being), one can only deceive themselves.

      In the case of dumping the whole bottle into Crouch's mouth, it was a way to force him to swallow. You can avoid three drops, it's much harder to keep a mouthful of potion from going down when your head is tilted back and you're being held by the neck in a struggle.
      His choices were either to swallow or gag

    • @Velgar_Grim
      @Velgar_Grim 6 месяцев назад

      @@dreamcream3738 Very on point. But considerin how much number is made on how rare and hard to come by the potion is and how extremely measured Snape is with such...
      If he had thought it so valuable, he would have at least forced the bottle in his mouth, not to waste any, but more precisely he would have given it mixed (in heavy dose, but still) to something else.
      "But Crouch could have done something while he did that", I could see someone asking.
      To be specific again, if it was in his power to do something, he could have done it after the potion was given too. The potion made you speak true, nothing more. It didn't (to my knowledge) paralyze you or hinder you otherwise. And we had Dumbledore on him at wand-point.
      In short. If it was such near-prizeless elixir, Snape would not have wasted it. Even in (and more so precisely in) that situation. Dumbledore was always levelheaded, but Snape even more so.
      ×edit× Would be really interesting to know how it was in the book, Dumbledore calmly wondered...

    • @dreamcream3738
      @dreamcream3738 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@Velgar_Grim I don't think it's rarity is intrinsic due to limited supply, but rather the time it takes to make it. What we do know is that it is, by Snape's commentary, incredibly tedious to prepare; taking one lunar phase to actually brew.
      Then again, he was telling this detail to Umbridge, so we cannot say for certain that he was even being truthful here.
      If we take him at face value, all it truly means is that *making* the potion takes about a month. For the Potions Master, the Half Blood Prince, brewing the stuff may be relatively simple, it just takes a long time, so to have it reliably on hand means that he'd have to make it in advance.
      Nothing was ever said about the scarcity of the ingredients.
      Also to note, in the book, Dumbledore shook three drops. The film adaptation poured the bottle for the sake of emphasizing the action.

    • @Velgar_Grim
      @Velgar_Grim 6 месяцев назад

      @@dreamcream3738 Figured something of note might be the case.
      It's just these videos are always making the case for it being something rare or really hard to comeby.
      And especially for the Ministery of Magic of all things.
      I can understand that they wouldn't want to use it on pretty much everybody, but not to use it at all is wild.
      Sure when you just want a quick case like Potter's, then the system itself is just biased.
      But for even Dumbledore to accept the Sirius' case without any demands for further proof, nor testing? Really? I really think the theory of him wanting Sirius handely out of the way might have some merit...

    • @dreamcream3738
      @dreamcream3738 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@Velgar_Grim a major theme of the books is how inefficient, corrupt and inept the government can be. Dolores Umbridge, for example, was a pastiche of Margaret Thatcher.
      The ministry regulates the use of the truth serum due to the dangerous potential of it. Technically speaking, Dumbledore using it was illegal. Umbridge using it
      While I like a good theory as much as the next person; This channel's videos tend to neglect the context of the supposed rarity of Veritaserum.
      What we know for certain; Professor Snape said that the potion takes a lunar phase to *mature*. This wording is very interesting, as this indicates that the length of time is mostly just *waiting* for it to be truly ready, much like when you are making your own wine.
      That, and Professor Slughorn expects 7th year students to be able to produce it, as it's N.E.W.T level stuff.
      Dumbledore believing Sirius was guilty is something reasonable, because he was not privy to the fact that Wormtail was the real secret keeper, and the evidence did point against Sirius.
      It also highlights that Dumbledore is not infallible. Before then, Harry saw him as this almost omniscient, sage-like figure. So to show that Dumbledore can be wrong, and grossly so, would serve to show him as more human.
