  • Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we’re going to be discussing BOOKS vs FILMS - honing in on some of the darkest BOOK moments that, for varying reasons, simply never made their way onto the silver screen.
    While the film adaptations brought the magic of Hogwarts to life on the big screen, they were not without their limitations. In the process of adapting the complex and intricate world of the books into a more visually-driven medium, certain dark and unsettling moments were omitted or altered, leaving fans with a somewhat diluted version of Rowling's original vision.
    These were moments so dark that (in the case of some) they had to be removed in order to keep the film’s PG rating down.
    Today, we’ll delve into these dark moments left out of the films, exploring the reasons behind their omissions and the impact of these changes on the overall story.
    This is a compilation style video but I’ve also included an ADDITIONAL part 4.

    The twins did not intend to torture anyone. The cabinet had been broken by Peeves the year or two before. They did know it was broken, but not what it would do. Rita was only in the jar for a few days. Hermione made sure she was safe inside. Greyback’s true worst trait was his attacking children and eating humans. He is the one who attacked Remus Lupin at the age of 5.

      Still. Putting someone in a broken magical object not knowing what the consequence will be, to me, seems more problematic than putting someone into a working or broken magical object knowing exactly what the consequence will be. Also, "not intending to” gets you far but rarely absolves you complete from a crime.
      "I did not intend for him to die in a car crash when forcing him to drive a broken car" really wouldn't hold up.

    • @MythStarFire
      @MythStarFire 5 дней назад +1

      @@ruud9761 it wasn’t the nicest thing to do, but it was a bit of self defense, especially when you remember all the evil tortures Umbridge used on students. Fred and George had already been hit with her cruelty, so I can say I blame them all that much. Shove an evil bully into a broke object to prevent yourself for getting some unknown evil punishment. If someone attacks you, you have the right to defend yourself. Umbridge was looking for any excuse to attack Harry and his friends.

      @@MythStarFire Their reasoning was losing a points for the stupid house contest. That is the MOST stupid and pathetic reasons for wanting to see what random harm can be done to a person by trapping them in a magical object. Then again they tried to trap Percy in an allegedly de-cursed pyramid so it is RIGHT up their alley for wanting to harm if not kill a person for stupid reasons.

    Some facts about the films -
    - Helena Bonham Carter apologized profusely multiple times to Emma Watson during the torture scene, hugged her, and asked if she was okay multiple times.
    - The reason Daniel Radcliffe’s screams were muted during the scene where Sirius black dies is because Daniel Radcliffe lost a family member in real life and he was grieving over it. The screams were surreal to the point where both Emma Watson and Helena Bonham Carter cried

    • @James-zo1uy
      @James-zo1uy 6 дней назад

      She should have done that after order of the phoenix, because of Hermione threatening Rita Skeeter they brought out Harry's story about how Voldemort returned to the public through the quibbler. Because it was Rita Skeeter that interviewed him (basically a very well known writer for the daily prophet) more people started to believe harry's side of the story which was essential for both parents and students to prepare against voldemort.

    When Harry used the cruciatus curse, it was when the Carrows' went to attack McGonagall. I think that really made an affect on Harry - it's not a darker trait per se, but more from protecting a maternal figure who has protected Harry for many years. The enjoyment of doing it, like with Bellatrix, is what makes it dark. There is an element of human Psyche that they do things that are perceived dark out of love or protection of a person or thing. I mean, who hasn't thought 'I'd kill anyone who'd hurt my mum/child/beloved pet'?

      I think it still clearly qualifies as a dark moment, though. He’s quite literally using an unforgivable curse which is dark magic by definition. If somebody spat on you in the real world and you tortured them you would go to “Azkaban.”

      @@samcotten2485 That's why I compared it to killing someone in the real world. Like most people generally don't go round wanting to kill or torture someone, but everyone can have that out of character moment. When thinking of Winky and Dobby, if we keep to true lore, it's the House Elf (Brownie or Hob) that selects the family they'll serve, not the wizard selecting the elf. I imagine that in both cases, it was a huge shock that they were both treated the way they were, especially in Dobby's case, after the fact.

    the even darkest parts is that Greyback was gaycoded, so he being a predator, specially for children, is even more disturbing and hurtfull. also the fact that the werewolf virus was based on HIV, something that JKR has comfirmed herself.
    the fact that the Deadthly Hollows`s simbol was the wizarding world`s zwastika; that was the reason Krumb lashed out on Mr Lovegood at BIll and Fleur`s wedding. and then complitly brushed off when Dumbledore made Harry choose between becomin a thyrant worse than Voldemort or keep the status quo.
    the fact that nothing changed after Voldemort`s defeat. everything went to normal, just with out the potential treath of an evil uprising. there still exist class divide, house elves`s slavery and goverment corruption.
    the crimes of the elite deatheaters were unpunished. there were little to no consequences for the Malfoy family, at all.

    • @Aufsammelkabbler
      @Aufsammelkabbler 5 дней назад +2

      Yeah, that in the end not much changed is one of the darkest and more realistic parts of the story. I like happy endings as much as anyone else but oftentimes it seems contrived that every injustice is resolved and from now on there is no more discrimination, hatred and corruption in the world. That is not how societies work. If for example the house elves were a big player in voldemorts defeat and tried to leverage this earned respect and goodwill to better their position it could be possible that for example their situation would have changed. Is that in line with what we know what the house elves would most likely do in such an scenario? Definitely not. It is also quite likely that Voldemorts second rise to power even worsened the racism against Werewolves and giants for example since again, some of them fought for the dark lord.
      It wouldn‘t be realistic that suddenly all the racism vanished and would in my opinion even disregard the actual hard fights activists and human rights movements endured in our world, which makes it shallow at best.
      As a side note: the werewolf curse in Harry potter is really not different in what it does to what you would expect from 99% of fantasy novels. I do not think that it is wise to throw all forms of infectious curses or infectious evil entities under the „This is an HIV allegory and therefore problematic“ bus. This lashing out just provokes simple fans of the genre to see themselves or things they love as under attack.

    Although, I don't think that Harry realising how to use an unforgivable curse meant that he had turned dark, because even the best and nicest people in the world have some tendancy towards destructiveness. The trick is in mastery of it, which Harry was beginning to learn.

His father literally mentally abused him he was so evil. He got the ending he deserved. It made sense to cut Bertha Jorkins out. The only thing they needed to do is to say what happened to her in details and that's it. Overall cutting most of these moments was a severe crime against the books. Barty deserved every year of the curse!! Are you crazy ?!? He KNEW his son couldn’t be cured and without that curse would kill him anyway! 🙄 Naw…NO SYMPATHY !! He Father’s only mistake was letting his wife manipulate him into the PLAN and not turning him over! 😖

    Charity's death was meaningless in the movie, we'd never seen her before, don't recall even hearing her name in any movie.

      It is not meaningless, though. It paints a realistic picture of corruption and what happens to whistle blowers who seek to expose it.
