doing my weekly “eat lunch in my car outside the trader joe’s while watching a youtube video” and this video uploaded at the perfect time for that. slaying
That sounds so cozy! I wish we had a Trader's Joe in Hawaii! I make a point to visit every time we go to Socal for Disneyland, ha. I love all the pumpkin goodies 🎃
can i just say i am soooo glad you put timestamps in your videos like it's such a little thing but i feel like it makes videos so much more accessible?? very first world problems i know especially because i rarely skip around in your vids because i could listen to you yap about just about anything but i appreciate that you take the time to do it nonetheless ❤
for two weeks i’ve been rewatching all your videos on a loop like a madman because of stress and desperate need for something comforting and familiar so like thank you lexi this video is exactly as perfect as your other ones
I am a house of leaves koolaid drinker and I am so so excited for you to read it. It is quite possibly the book i think about the most and it gets significantly less intimidating after like 60 or so pages
jade city is just an absolute masterclass in worldbuilding that is so intricate and well-thought-out you completely forget it's all made up. i was more invested in fantasy jade politics than i am in real life politics
The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches was my first and only five star read this year. Immediately after finishing it I wanted to reread it again but I couldn’t because I had to return it to the library. This book was the equivalent of a warm cup of tea, wrapped in a blanket sitting on a rocking chair in front of the fire. Highly recommend
It's so good. It was a five-star read for me as well. I am not sure I'd classify it as a rom-com though. It's more cozy magical romance with a delightful found family. But a perfect fall read - because the whole book is like a warm hug while wearing a cozy sweater and drinking a cup of tea.
BUNNY is so good it’s a horror, it’s weird but it’s also a great reflection on the process of writing and how powerful you are as a writer when you create characters; I loved how you can just take it as it is - a weird horror that fits into this new trend of uncanny, or you can take it as a creative writing project
Oh my god. I have to have a hot compress on my eye and was thinking ‘wow wouldn’t it be great if Lexi had a new video to listen to while I sit here?’ and by god SHE DID
house of leaves is so good. you'll never find anything else like it. one of the spookiest love stories ive ever read. (also the hol scripts are really good too! they werent what i expected but slapped)
strange the dreamer WRECKED ME i loved it but also be aware there are some very serious/dark plotlines and concepts. i read it based on a booktuber rec and they did not mention that at all so it was a little shocking but it was well done imo
Jade City is SO good. I tore through it and the first sequel and can confirm that only get better as they go on. Excited to get to the third book once I clear out my current queue of books
AAA LIBRARY AT MOUNT CHAR IS SO GOOD!! it’s one of my favorite books ever, i literally could not put it down and it had me so engaged the entire time. i adore you for talking about it at all
The thing i love the most about your videos is that the reccomendations and books covered are a wide range of genres styles, but i always know that the ones you reccomend will be good
Sorcery of Thorns is so great! Also if you like it and fall you might like the author’s debut “Enchantment of Ravens” the love interest is literally the fae prince of Autumn
So so so happy to hear In the Dream House recommended. It’s one of my favorite books and absolutely unforgettable. And I will be adding these other recs to my TBR 👀
Fully resonating with your rant on “leaves” and then you end it with “does this even make sense? I don’t know” GIRL. YES. ITS SO PROFOUND IM GOBSTOPPED.
Can I just say, fall word associations for book recs is such a cool idea 🤎 and I love how you tied all the thoughts together in with the books.🍁 📚 One of my comfort YTs. AN ARTICULATE QWEEN!!
Fun fact, I actually DNFed Fifth Season my first go. I couldn't get past the second person narration chapters... but people wouldn't shut up about the damn series so I tried again and when I say my world was CHANGED... I devoured all three back to back. It immediately made it into my top 3 series of all time. Now I'm one of the people who won't shut up about it hahaha
I've been frothing at the mouth for fall weather so i can drink hot tea/coffee and read while watching your videos, Lexi!! Every video is a banger! Also, PLEASE do another deepdive on a (terrible) book! ❤❤
The Fifth Season hype!!! What a pick and also perfectly themed. The precipice of fall and winter is EXACTLY where I would situate the Broken Earth Trilogy on the calendar
time to blindly add all these titles to my tbr even before watching the video because my faith and trust in lexi's taste is absolute. how exciting! (on another note, i am so incredibly jealous that the weather where you are is already chilled enough for you to break out the word fall.... it is still hell where i live. we have long since crossed the line of desperation like i needed it to be autumn Yesterday, and yet. sigh)
I cannot wait to hear your review about bunny!!! One of the fun things about reading this was reading about it's various interpretations online after reading the book! (Truly hoping for a video for this book with a white board)
STRANG THE DREAMER MENTION OMG!! That duology got me back into reading as an adult and gave me a whole new perspective on what kind of an experience books could be!! 🫶
Great recs! (as always) I wanted to add that I love how you start the video by saying “I hope you’re taking care of yourself” today that was the nudge I needed to finally get up and start my day so thanks
Okay, but from a big chunky earring lover to another, why are your earrings always awesome and unprecedented? Like honestly, mad respect. Also, I’ve just been binging your videos these past 24 hours and my para social relationship is well and truly established 😌
I just got back into reading (insert typical formerly gifted bookworm backstory here) and this is PERFECT to get me thru till the next Emily Wilde releases--I actually have both of Muchado's books because I LOVED her edited edition of Carmilla (also highly recommend as a fall read, her queer perspective gives it so much more depth and things to pick your brain on), so those absolutely became the next two on the list!!!
I absolutely loved the way you formed your recommendations in the beginning btw, I’d love to see more like them in the future! So much more interesting than just recommending books that explicitly take place in fall (though ofc I vibe with that to)
The genuine fist pump that I did when you said Strange the Dreamer 🙏🏽🙌🏽absolutely one of my favorite fantasies that I feel like gets so often overlooked!! And as someone that also is not usually a big fan of romantasy I found The Serpent and the Wings of Night to be a very fun time!
Really appreciate your takes and the way you explain the logic behind your choices. As one of your non-"girlie" followers, I can say you definitely drew my attention to some great female authors I wouldn't have otherwise known about. Keep up the great work!
I really enjoy your videos and especially your voice. Keeping me company while I attempt to get things done that I can’t otherwise find the motivation to do. So, thanks for being there. Thanks for the videos ❤
Jade City is genuinely one of the greatest fantasy trilogies of all time to me. the way Fonda Lee builds her world in this serious is incredible, because every niche question you may have gets answered with more detail than you could ever imagine
I am OVERJOYED that you’re reading house of leaves. I fucking love that book because despite its horror and over all unsettling vibe, it’s a whole ass experience that has a theme and tones of perseverance and family hope amidst a darkness that threatens to overtake you (both figuratively and literally) The poetry at the end also slaps!!
I love this sort of recommendation because fall is so much more to me than just the autmnal vibes. I got the biggest smile at the Sorcery of Thorns rec. I feel like I never hear anyone talk about it but me and my best friend both love it. To the point she made a dnd game in that world for our group. Just happy to see it get praised.
Make sure you listen to the Poe album Haunted when you read house of leaves. Poe is the author’s, younger sister and the album touches on themes/characters from the book!!!!
Normally I go for just dark academia during the fall, but all of these recommendations have been on my TBR for so long, they might just have to get bumped up... Love that its not just the usual fall reading recs though. Thanks Lexi :)
bunny is everything to me. mona awad is a goddess & her newest novel rouge fucked me up - I met her at a book signing for it and her skin was gLOWING, mama did her research for rouge (skin care cult + snow white fairytale? yes pls) - she's also apparently working on a sequel to bunny rn!! ahhh!!
This video crossed my path at the right moment. I loved the mystery, "May the Wolf Die," by Elizabeth Heider. Fast-paced, intriguing characters, and gorgeous setting.
Ooohh I'm so excited to hear what you think of HoL! I also read it for school and one girl in my tutorial got so invested it was like watching her descend deeper into madness every week
"Stiff" was the first Mary Roach book I read and I loved it . I have since read some of her others including "Gulp" and she has the ability to make a boring topic interesting.
Bunny had me sitting and pondering life afterwards.... it was so good. The theories around this books is so interesting, I'm so excited to see what you think!
For 'House of Leaves,' my biggest piece of advice if you're at risk of being burnt out from reading it: pick and choose which foot notes to read. Sometimes people think every single one is important, but it's not the case. You can skim them briefly to make your decision but they can get overwhelming. You'll know which ones are vital to which story so trust your instincts!
i can’t wait to hear your review of house of leaves! i’ve had it in my list for YEARS and remember being so fascinated by the concept, i’m so excited to hear your thoughts on it!
loooove this interpretation of a fall recommendation video its so unique! Honestly it allows for a much larger variety of books than the general dark academia + horror books list that you usually see
I used to be into reading as a kid and after going insane and watching all your videos i wanna get into it again. Its so hard getting into anything with my mental health, and seeing someone that has extremely similsr tastes to me going thriugh so many rlly helps me make a top tier list of books id love to read. Cant wait for your next vid, i will be reading babel peomptly because as a japanese american thats had a hyperfixation on linguistics since i was a kid this will destroy me
you should read the illuminae files trilogy! i haven’t read house of leaves but i get the vibe that it’s a similarly bonkers type of storytelling where the format is just off the wall crazy. though the plot is NOTHING alike, don’t get me wrong. the illuminae files is also a lot less confusing; it’s not meant to be a mystery or a difficult/high brow/intellectual read, just a fun story with some crazy cool formatting and some great humor. heavily recommend
I am so excited to hear your review of Strange the Dreamer. It was such a fantastic book and you'll notice some easter eggs from the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy as well. I absolutely loved it.
stiff was great! I'm excited to see what you have to think about bunny. I really think you'd like the thirty names of night! it's about family history and grief and finding a name for yourself and gender and art. it also uses some loosely epistolary sections. really really lovely
I think 7 out of my last 10 reads have been Newlynova book recs and I haven't regretted a single one.❤ This is my new favourite place for refreshing my TBR list. Add a couple of these now. 👍🏻
I don't think I've commented on one of your videos before, but I had to come back and tell you THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BRINGING Serpent and the Wings of Night to my attention! I hadn't heard of it before and was so invested and blew through the sequel as well. I read a lot of popular dystopian & fantasy books in high school (Hunger Games, Divergent, Harry Potter, Maze Runner etc.) and this series felt nostalgic in the best way. It gave me the best sense of a natural progression of my interests. It's by no means YA, but if you grew up reading those series, it hits the same sweet spot those did. At least for me. So thank you! ❤
AHHH so glad you’re reading stiff, I listened to it on audio and it was so good! Very fun but also has very real/serious moments that make you think! I loved it!
i over-romanticize fall so heavily that i barely see it as a season but a re-emergence of my pure soul.
You mean you give fall the love it deserves
