Ever since reading Interview With the Vampire on your recommendation, I've been on the Vampire Chronicles series reading spree. Now, six books deep, I can wholeheartedly say that The Vampire Lestat is the best in the series. And I have a sneaking suspicion that no other book will make me feel so invested in these vampires or question my own sense of temporality, morality, and purpose as deeply.
The prose is at its peak, and the way this book explodes with its exploration of purpose, religion, and the nature of good and evil is haunting, mesmerizing, and life-altering. While I agree that the series declines, it doesn’t happen until The Vampire Lestat goes out with a bang.
Thank you, Emma, for introducing me to the series that has changed me forever. I’m so excited for you to experience this one; it’s truly a gem!

i second you watching Over the Garden Wall, but you might also like Sleepy Hollow and for sure Pan's Labyrinth. If you'd like to venture into some movies that arent cozy but also aren't really that scary and are more artistic I'd say The Witch, Susperia (the original and the remake, bonus points for the setting being a ballet academy), The Lighthouse, El Ophanato, Midsommar, May, and Let the Right One In.

As far as films go, I would recommend The Innocents(1961) directed by Jack Clayton and based on the Henry James novel The Turning Of The Screw. Subtle creepy vibes, leaves a lot to the imagination, the black and white cinematography is stunning and the performances are incredible(one of the best child performances IMO as well).

So excited to hear how you like The Vampire Lestat! I’m a huge Vampire Chronicles fan but it is true that the quality varies across the series. In terms of style, Interview with the Vampire is very different from the rest too. Personally, the books I enjoyed the most were The Vampire Lestat, The Queen of the Damned (3rd book), The Vampire Armand (6th book), Merrick (7th book) & Blood and Gold (8th book). Marius might be my favourite out of all the vampires… ancient but so kind, so benevolent.

  • @eloiseortega
    @eloiseortega Месяц назад +4

I just finished book 6 in the Vampire Chronicles but I can give you a bit of an idea of how they go up until book 10. Books 4 and 5 follow Lestat in the "present day" and depart from the style of the previous two books. In 4 Lestat gets a "new body" and in 5 Lestat gets recruited by Satan. I didn't love 4 but I quite enjoyed 5. Books 6 and 8 are backstories of two other vampires, Armand and Marius (who you will meet in book 2). Books 7, 9, and 10 are tied into the Mayfair Witches series. There is some information imparted in The Vampire Lestat and more so in Queen of the Damn that also ties into the Mayfair Witches series but It isn't necessary to have read those books to understand what's going on, I don't know if that's the case of books 7,9,10.
So far I've loved three books, really liked two, and found one to be mid. Her writing style does become slower and much more descriptive but I actually liked that. There's also a lot more religion being discussed but as someone who isn't religious i didn't find it egregious and it doesn't feel out of place, you can just tell that religion and faith were forefront on her mind as she was writing certain books.
So in general, yes after book three there is a clear shift, but that by no means indicates that the other books are bad. Particularly if you're in it for the exploration of certain ideas and like the parts where the vampires have long and deep conversations discussing immortality, humanity, morality, time, loneliness, otherness, etc.

"The Night Circus" by Erin Morgenstern is something I'm REALLY enjoying -- Victorian era, young magicians in training. Also "The Best Ghost Stories of Algernon Blackwood" is a really odd and creepy collection. Love your channel!

I also loved interview with a vampire. Lestat is also good, get ready for some ancient vampires. It’s a good origin story, paints him in a whole new light. Just not sunlight… lol.
Just finished the exorcist for October. One of the creepiest books I’ve ever read.
❤ listening to you talk. I find your voice to be incredibly soothing. Also love your content. Keep up the good work. 😊

Question for you. Is it necessary to read the first book before The Vampire Lestat, or does it stand on its own?

@@gwenellison5386 if you watch the "Interview with the Vampire" movie from the 90s (it stays pretty close to the book), I think you could

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on 'The Vampire Lestat.' I read 'Interview' only after you talked so highly of it a couple years ago, so I might just have to follow suit with this next one. I also want to recommend 'The Gilda Stories' if are looking for more novels that dissect vampire lore and discuss the toll that immortality would take on a character. It begins in 1850 and follows a character initially called 'the girl' as she lives (or, you know, doesn't live) through the 20th century. I read it last year and it has stuck with me since then. Love the TBR! 🦇🎃

18:15 Ernest Scared Stupid (1991, free on RUclips) - Ernest's ancestor was the town's priest when it was founded in the 1890s. On Halloween, he and the townsfolk captured a troll that had been terrorizing children and buried the troll alive, sealed in the roots of a blessed tree - but not before the troll placed a curse on the priest's bloodline that each generation will become more and more foolish until being dumb enough to free it again. 100 years later in the 1990s, that's exactly what happens and where the movie begins with Ernest as the town's goofy idiot. Cozy Halloween movie that's half spooky and half silly.
For animated, any of the late 90s/early 2000s Scooby-Doo movies like Zombie Island, Witch's Ghost, Cyber Chase, or Alien Invaders. They're all great and cozy.

I just read Starling House last month - and The Once and Future Witches before that - because I adored The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow. She is definitely one of my favourite authors, and an auto-buy author for me, too. ❤❤
Starling House made me feel an angst that I only usually feel when reading some really good fanfiction. 😂👍🏻

I am so interested to see how you get on with Ryu Murakami! I do adore his books although his characters are often hyper violent but also complete outcasts.
I believe he is the second best selling Japanese author in Japan after the other Murakami
