Is Silent Hill 2 ACTUALLY that good?

  • I'll be fully honest, I am writing this description while blazed out of gourd, I made the mistake of smoking a J after I finished up a pretty epic day of editing, and here we are. I just re read that like 3 times and still can't even remember what I wanted to say. So yeh, this video took a lot of work, it gets a little preachy and full of itself towards the end, at some point I lost the light heartedness that came at the start. I am absolutely knockered right. Enjoy the video.
    Silent Hill 2 is a 2001 survival horror game developed by Team Silent, a group in Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo, and published by Konami. The game was released from September to November, originally for the PlayStation 2. The second installment in the Silent Hill series, Silent Hill 2 centers on James Sunderland, a widower who journeys to the town of Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his dead wife informing him that she is waiting there for him. An extended version containing an extra bonus scenario, Born from a Wish, and other additions was published for Xbox in December of the same year. In 2002, it was ported to Microsoft Windows and re-released on PlayStation 2 as a Greatest Hits version, which includes all bonus content from the Xbox port. A remastered high-definition version was released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2012 as part of the Silent Hill HD Collection.

    Thank you for pointing out the obvious glaring issues Silent hill fanboys/fangirls seem to heavily ignore or overlook about the game just because it influenced the horror gaming genre, sure it has a good plot twist for the time and some good scores as well really good atmosphere and design asthetics. Great video sir,
    I absolutely love silent hill 2, so much so that I have tattoos dedicated to it. However even though I do consider it to be the greatest horror game ever made I do also understand that it's massively flawed and gaming has progressed. The games plays terribly and the voice acting even in the og version is terrifying but like Tommy Wiseaus "the room" terrifying. I haven't played it in years as I don't want to as I don't want to ruin the fond memories I have of it.

    Actually, the canned juice is a representation of James killing Mary. He throws out the six-pack of expired juice down the garbave shoot and it's a metaphor for Mary's inability to have physical intimacy with him when she was dying if her ilness, basically her worth as a partner was "expired". Also, it's a six-pack because the number 6 in English sounds like the word "sex".
    Nahz but seriously I just made that shit up, and it makes absolutely no sense. Just like most SH2 fans in a nutshell.

    Almost seemed like you were trying too hard at first but the video ended up making me laugh a lot and you mention a lot of things me and my friend noticed and made jokes about (And hes a hardcore SH fan). The weird voice acting and odd character decisions dont bug me but I think its fair to critique this stuff. Some of those puzzles actually really felt half baked thinking about it. Overall I think SH1 was the best SH. Older on a previous gen system but it felt much better to play, and I can say this as I played 1,2, and 3 back to back in reverse order! Also liked 3 more than 2 as well!
    Also I think the biggest issue with SH2 fanboyism is some people seem to care more about how deep the game is than anything else, or at least how smart it makes them feel. Not all of them mind you. It is funny though how some feel embarrassed by the fact theres a cult in the series because thats too cliche lol.

    • @TheRealGMat
      @TheRealGMat  Год назад +1

      Silent Hill 2 tells its story almost exclusively through cinematics. I don’t know if that’s you’re point, but yeh, wrong.

    • @seboyo6766
      @seboyo6766 Год назад +4

      @@TheRealGMat No, the cinematics until the last part of the game serve to contextualize what is happening, the story is hidden in the symbolism, the puzzles, the scenarios and small events that occur during the gameplay, such as the puzzle of the three sins or what happens in room S3 in the hospital when you get to it in the otherworld.
      Silent Hill 2 is a very subtle game that asks the player to fully engage with the story, that's why the endings don't depend on arbitrary decisions, but on how the game is being played. If the player is very into James's story and strives to play well without taking too much damage, solving puzzles easily and interacting with objects related to him, it is very likely that he will get the Leave ending, however, if he cares more for other characters, plays poorly or pays little or no attention to the game's story is more likely to get the In Water ending.
      That's why Silent Hill 2 is a masterpiece, it understand perfectly the virtues and limitations of its medium and uses them to tell a story, one that is deep and is capable of moving people. I'm not exagerating when i say that this game has saved lifes, it is a very human experience but that has been clouded by how old the game is, wich made it age a lot in terms of gameplay, that's why a remake is pretty much needed.

    • @blunderless
      @blunderless Год назад +3

      @@TheRealGMat well for starters, james’ character is developed through seemingly mundane player choices that the player doesn’t even think of (how often you heal/how recklessly you play, and how you well you protect maria) these choices will determine the grey area of the ending.
      if this video was unbiased, it would be a “retrospective”(which there are already tons of). i like your humor and personality but this is anything but unbiased and objective.
      although you can validly attribute a lot of the game’s love to nostalgia, are you comparing it to games released in 2001 or games released in the era you are more familiar with?
      also you need to catch up on your lore in general. many of your criticisms of james were deliberately put in the game to hint at is dissociation and cognitive dissonance.

    I will say, the part where James is in the mirror at the start. He’s psyching himself up to enter the town and him touching his face is to make sure to himself that he’s not dreaming since the game takes this weird, dream like state. Which also explains the weird voice acting lol. But all around good vid!
    Edit: as a fan that can honestly say to me this game is a masterpiece, I really enjoyed the fresh look you gave and the humor was on point. I still find myself coming back to this video just for the memes and the humor you give. Im perfectly fine with a game i adore to be criticized, and i will not judge anybody for having a different opinion than me. I don’t like to come off as rude or like im judging anybody because “you no like game i like! Me angry!” Cuz that’s just not how i roll. I just wanted to give my interpretation on what James is doing at the start of the game because that’s how I percieved it.

They take every little detail, whether it's awkward or dumb, and come up with some lame excuse, as if it was intentional from the devs (even if it was, still stupid), and some type of master stroke of genius. Gimme a break...
      And the bad awkward voice acting isn't intentional, and doesn't enhance the creepiness of the game, it's down to bad voice casting, and awkward Japanese writing, translation, localization in English.

    I'm only part of the way through this video, but in a half-assed and probably unnecessary defense for some of the voice acting, I believe certain actors here were not experienced voice actors at the time. And while some performances seem wierd and kinda dumb sometimes (sorry Guy, lookin at you) there are other times where the performances either make sense or are actually really good. The voice actress for Mary/Maria goes HARD, especially in the letter reading in the end. It is chef's kiss. Also, Angela sounds really odd, but thats cuz she's been abused and is kind of stuck in a scared, childlike state, so it makes sense for her. Also, fun fact. The child voice actress for Laura is actually the child of the voice actor for James. Its kinda cute if u think about it. It must have been really fun to work on something like this with her dad.

I can see her idea but I think she misses the mark by a significant margin. I hear what you're saying, but by no means is it perfect. I don't think the perfect game exists tbh, every game has flaws. My little monologue at the end was meant to infer that I really do actually love Silent Hill 2 with all my heart, or at the very least my memories of Silent Hill 2

    • @JamieZero7
      @JamieZero7 Год назад +2

      Flawless? how exactly? Not even the best in its own franchise. 1 is better. "Best horror experience" is not even close to being in the top 10 horror experiences in games. I've seen better movies, books, manga, and anime in the genre. This game's themes aren't even well put in the game. That's just what people on the wiki say and youtubers say and people seem to take that as gospel. But I don't think it conveys the themes of depression very well. And even if it did a good theme doesn't make a good story let alone game. It becomes a theme over substance. If it weren't for RUclipsrs and others online repeating the same stuff I doubt anyone would care about the game. 3rd game did everything better, and the father-daughter relationship was far better in 1&3. Even on the good outcome of 1. Cheryl is dead and a new being Heather is created. If you want depressing that really tops it. And if you want depressing games then Final Fantasy 9 does it best with the story actually being good.
      This game begins with the mystery of his wife. But you don't really care because you know she's dead. And you know she should appear because of the 1st game's silent hill setting. Even if he did kill his wife. She seems like she asked him to do it. I never got the impression that James was upset with her or sick of her. Far from it. It seems like he loved his wife a lot. But she was dying. I never once came from this game going ah James was unfaithful. Or anything. That actually seems more like her fears, not James. And this game does that a lot.
      Also the stereotype of the orphaned sick kid in the hospital. I mean that's really original. The kid's story makes no sense at all. It just came across as forced in. Extremely clunky in execution. Yea she was hoping to adopt this girl. Honestly, the game really drops her fast. And she comes across as a brat. I really don't get it. Why is she even in Silent hill? why was she sick? ,etc. The game really just drops her in and out of the story. That it never really feels like a real person.
      And if you want me to think of James as some monster. Maybe should have played as a kid. Rather than James. Because now it just comes across as a psycho kid that you don't care for. She feels so unreal that even I hate the kid. And a manipulative wife. It seems like James is the abused one.
      The artwork is good, and the sounds are good, it sets the atmosphere. But again you can't make a game on that alone, and we had that in the 1st game anyway. It's got weak writing. The gameplay is terrible, bosses are weak from a story point. Bosses should covey a good story. It's what makes Dark souls bosses so great. They are more than just polygons. Again the 1st game did better bosses.

    Watch a few minutes, then see you complain about how "boring" the characters in SH2 were comparing to, I don't know, (maybe some edgy cool looking badass characters in today gaming), is enough for me to know you don't know jack shit bout this game.
    Imagine asking those characters WHO ARE SUFFERING FROM TRAUMA, PTSD, AND GUILT, to act like a normal person.
    Oh I get it, you wanna see them bust out in tears, crying, screaming like a bunch of idiots we always see in some B-horror movies. Ok let me tell you this: Since I was also a guy who grew up with trauma and PTSD, all the shitty over-the-top PTSD drama acting you see in game or movie nowaday are just a bunch of crap. I actually felt relatable seeing how the characters in Sh2 struggle to FORGET AND LET GO OF ALL THE TRAUMA AND THEIR SIN THEIR GUILT WHICH THEY WILL NEVER FORGIVE THEMSELVES FOR. Then I see you, a total d^mb@ss, laughing at them, calling them "suck, boring", and want them to act and behave like some shitty stupid nonsensical fictional characters in nowaday movies or games. Your stupid review is actually a great insult both to my emotion and my intelligence.
    Oh, btw, James also had to fight against his suicidal thought too, just like Angela. And u were like "hey boring ppl, pls act more dramatic! Show me how much u suffer by screaming crying out loud like the weirdo superheroes in the MCU pls!"
    If you ever go into a mental hospital how do you expect the patients to act or talk?? The ppl u see from SH2 were facing their own guilt in the mirror and on the edge of suicide FFS. And u want them to act more dramatic???
    What happened to you? been brainwashed by some fakeass over-the-top drama games or movies from this generation?
    Then proceed to spend 40+ mins to "criticize" this game and laugh like an idiot. Oh and pls, I'm not that d^mb not to realize most of your "laugh" is just your act. Fake laughs, bad acting. yes, you with your terrible bad acting trying to make urself look cool and edgy and entertaining to draw more fans into this review... YOu, with that kind of BS bad acting, have the gall to criticize the voice acting of this game????? TF????
    let's be honest here. When you have not a single clue about what you're saying, do you think ppl would care if you look "cool, entertaining" or not???

      @@TheRealGMat I think the fact that you expect them to stick around does speak something about your lack of experience of dealing with trauma. They clearly acted in affect, so no, there's no reason for them to stick around. Your lack of emotional maturity shines through here, and it shows in your other responses too people criticizing your video as well.
      And from that vantage point, I think it's unfair to say that James's voice acting is bad, when the very intention behind the VA is to convey the emotional numbness and apathy a person struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts may feel. He sounds very much like how a real person would sound in that situation, and I actually think he nails it once you understand that's the emotion he's trying to express. It's just not done through convention and honestly I am not even sure how it could be done through conventional voice acting, because the entire point is that he is supposed to sound flat and as if he doesn't fit in, because that's exactly how James feels. That's also true for the bathroom scene. And of course, there's the Lynchian aspect to consider as well, in addition to how much inspiration they also took from Jacob's Ladder.
      The problem with the game is that it fails to establish James' emotional state to the player beforehand, which it also cannot because if it did, it would completely ruin the big reveal and the emotional height towards the end of the game. So I think these scenes game more value upon a second playthrough when the player already understands James' situation.
      While I'm at it, your criticism of the apartment block area also makes no sense given it's a horror game. It's supposed to make you feel confused and get lost, because it heightens the fear and anxiety you feel. If it directed you in a very clear way where to go, it would completely take away that fear of being stuck in these tight corridors. It's very intentionally made to make you feel claustrophobic, and from that vantage point the area nails it. Also to be fair, how else do you expect apartment blocks like that to look like? They look just the same in real life.
      And if I'm really honest, if you really listen to the difference between your attempt of delivering the same lines and the original, the original *is* more emotional than yours. I think the difference here is that even though you state that it should be delivered with some emotion, you don't *feel* the emotion you're trying to deliver, but he does.
      I do think think there are legitimate criticisms of Silent Hill 2, but a lot of your takes just come across as whiney and superficial attempts to find faults just because that's what you set out to do in the same way Cinema Sins does it, ruining your own actual enjoyment and immersion in the process. Of course you don't understand why people enjoy the game because you didn't even finish it. People love it for the story while they can overlook flaws in game design and gameplay.
      Unfortunately I came here for actual thoughtful analysis, but looks like your channel and content isn't it. All the burps and farts were just super off-putting as well.
