Germany Could Acquire 35 Additional Leopard 2A8 Tanks While Waiting for MGCS

In a bid to bolster its military capabilities amidst a transitional phase, Germany's Bundeswehr is set to acquire approximately 35 additional Leopard 2A8 battle tanks, as reported by the German newspaper Hartpunkt on April 30, 2024. These tanks, slated to be acquired under the existing contract with KNDS Deutschland, are earmarked as a short-term support pillar until the full implementation of the transitional solution, expected in the medium term. The acquisition is estimated to cost around one billion euros, with operational readiness anticipated by 2026, as stated by Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and KNDS CEO Ralf Ketzel.
