- Let me rock you in my arms
I'll hold you safe and small
A refugee from the seraphim
In your rich-girl rags and all
Did your dreams die young, were they too hard won
Did you reach too high and fall
And there is no rest for the ones God blessed
And he blessed you best of all
Your eyes seem from a different face
They've seen that much that soon
Your cheek too cold, too pale to shine
Like an old and waning moon
And there is no peace, no true release
No secret place to crawl
And there is no rest for the ones God blessed
And he blessed you best of all
If tears unshed could heal your heart
If words unsaid could sway
Then watch you melt into the night
Adieu, and rue the day
Did your dreams die young, were they too hard won
Did you reach too high and fall
And there is no rest for the ones God blessed
And he blessed you best of all
One of the most beautiful songs of the 20th century. And Richard Thompson’s masterpiece.
This is my favorite RT song and one of my favorite songs as well. Richard Thompson is one of the greatest underrated and underappreciated musicians of all time.
Thank you for posting this..thank you Richard for writing this ..Truly a parent's lament of watching your grown children go through great difficulties in their lives.
I believe I read somewhere that Richard wrote this for his daughter when she was going through a hard time in her life. Once your a parent the worst pain you can feel is when your children are hurt..no matter how old they are. This song could be for anyone you care about going through hard times..
RT is, quite, simply, one of the great musical geniuses of our era: poetic, melodic, soulful. I don't have words capable of describing his talent and contribution to our times.
I feel the same way. I'd say one of the great musical geniuses of the recorded era or even all time.
@laoban1954 - those were pretty good words ;-)
This song is how I learned of Mr. Thompson's music. There is a cover of this song on "Adieu False Heart," a Linda Ronstadt/Ann Savoy Album. I heard that and had to search for the author. Never before have I discovered such a gold mine of great music. Well, maybe once before when I learned about Chris Smither from a cover of "Visions of Johanna." Anyhow, I'm happy to finally see a video of Richard Thompson doing this song - Thanks!
I was named after this guy, he is beyond anything else I've ever heard. Truly one of a kind. This is the soundtrack to my childhood
You have beautiful parents! 😍
This is 1 of RT's gems, like Beeswing, the more you hear it the better it gets.
Beautiful!
I caught his solo live show in Austin two nights ago. It was one of those rare and special musical events I will always remember. This song was one of the show's highlights for me.
such an amazing guy. That voice, that guitar, those songs!
what a gorgeous song, jeez...
I first heard this excellent song on the album Adieu False Heart by Linda Ronstadt and Ann Savoy. Their version (with Linda singing lead) impressed me, so I came looking for it on RUclips. Thanks for posting it.
Righteous.
Ah you know what this is and why...
my heartx
Beautiful
first use of blue orange lighting in recorded history
Which video/tv program is this from? It's obviously professionally shot etc.
When and where, please?
Never seen him use that Lowden.
Man I hate how tramps are supposed to represent things in films.
A million film school shorts = at least 750,000 tramps.
