  • The Esplanade Shopping Center is a power center in Oxnard, California. It replaced the Esplanade Mall which was Ventura County's first fully enclosed shopping center and was anchored by May Company California and Sears. Anchor stores include Home Depot, Nordstrom Rack, Staples, Dick's Sporting Goods, Party City and Food 4 Less.

    We always pronounced it "ES-plu-nod".
Many a Friday night was spent there as a pre teen with my folks...sometimes dinner and shopping...and a treat at Bob's Ice Cream where you chose the flavor of your bar and the coating they dipped it is...my dad and I loved that!
If I was lucky, I got a plastic model to build or something for my model railroad at Toy World!
Saw at least one movie at the theaters with them (Herbie Rides Again, I think).....and many with a friend or two through the seventies and into the eighties when it was often $1!
Later I would get my first piercing there...go to Pet World for rats, fish, etc......and then for clearance tools at Sears when it closed.
I saw it all happen with the downfall of the Esplanade and the growth of the Ventura center!

Millers Outpost was the best store.
And I learned how to drive a stick shift in a Ford Escort in this parking lot ☺️
