The Northridge Earthquake in 1994 didn't just "heavily damage" Bullock's (10:06). The store was destroyed and then demolished months later. It was totally rebuilt. I remember looking at it back then. The walls separated and the second floor partially collapsed onto the first floor, along with much of the roof. It was still Bullock's when it reopened, so it wasn't too late for Bullock's as a name brand. It was later renamed Macy's, but I don't remember the year, but some Googling tells me 1996.
Thanks for posting an interesting history. Bullock’s had a presence in San Francisco in the late 1970s until the ‘80s. There was a store at Stonestown Mall and at San Francisco Center downtown SF on Market Street. There was even a Bullock’s at the short-lived Fashion Island mall in Foster City along the Peninsula of SF near San Mateo, CA. It is interesting to see how much retail has changed over the past few decades. Thanks again for posting.
I loved Bullock's! It seemed more upscale than Macy's. I remember as a young kid trying to run up the slanted outside walls at the Northridge Mall location. Thanks for your short history.
One of the best logos of any retailer, a very slick-type cursive. The culture & economy of LA (& other US cities too) in the early 1900s makes the idea of creating & growing a strictly local department-type store unthinkable in the 2020s. Even before online became so huge too. Although I guess today's Erewhon is a food-type version of such a business.
Del Amo Fashion Square represent!!!! I loved their Esprit section - it was not far from the Food Court, too! Sad it closed (I didn't know when it happened, I was overseas!) Ty for the Friday Flashback.
Bullock’s South Coast Plaza became Macy’s (one of three Macy’s stores at the upscale Costa Mesa shopping destination). The original Bullock’s SCP was the ultimate flagship for many years and a real “experience” in shopping. Lol
I always like shopping at bullocks more than broadway, Robinsons, etc. I'm sorry they closed. Thanks for the video Eric! Have you already done a video on Sambo’s restaurant?

I had the pleasure of shopping at the Art Deco style Bullocks on Wilshire blvd back in the day.
Love this. Now please to a part two on which of these buildings are still left

When the Beverly Center opened in the early 80’s there was a Bullocks at one end and a Broadway department store at the other side.
You couldn't beat Bullocks customer service!! I will never darken the door of a Macy's!!!
