Harry Pfeffer I remember when I was about to go abroad alone for the first time long term and everybody kept telling me down. I was listening to this song, Think for your self by The Beatles, Can I play with madness by Iron Maiden, and If you want to sing out sing out by Cat Stevens.
The lyrics are particularly clever in this aren't they? The way they roll together; despise, analyse, criticise, scandalise, apologise, be wise and investigate, insinuate, complicate, intimidate. He was a true wordsmith. A real anti- authority song that leaves you smiling every time. They just don't make music like this anymore. I always think they look as if they were having fun when they made this video, the smiles look genuine. The man had a smile that was addictive. I often wish he'd never gotten into the H and drink, just couldn't give it up at the end. 😖
The entire Black Rose album is so fucking good. It has fighting spirit, virtuose licks, and brilliant melodies all the way thru. For me its in top 3 along with Fighting and Bad Reputation. What a band!
totally agree. i've discovered thin lizzy somewhere about 1.5 years ago, while i was kinda depressed, but the music of this guys helped me in some way to keep my guitar playing. black rose album is a masterpiece!
What a fantastic song full of attitude, great lyrics and rhythmic drive. What a huge presence Phil Lynott was and what great guitar players he had - miss you Gary. Love the kettle drums or whatever they are. I don't think that Thin Lizzy ever get the credit that they deserve.
This randomly came on the radio today while I was at work and the lyrics really hit me. I've been in a rut for so long, feeling worthless, full of guilt and shame, a coward, untapped potential. Just being a dreamer who drifts through this life with not much to show for it. But for these three minutes today Phil helped me to feel pretty damn good. It felt like he sang only for me.
Love the Tipani opening. But then it's soon overtaken by the superb harmony guitars, lyrics, vocals, melody and overall greatness. Phil truly was awesome. RIP legend
I can remember owning Black Rose as a kid and playing it in my room, I had forgotten about it until recently when I rediscovered Thin Lizzy and I’ve never been more in love with rock n roll 🖤🇮🇪
16, AND I LOVE THIS BAND!!! It might even have to top Queen for me ffs 😭 thanks to my dad for first showing me their performance of ‘whiskey in the jar.’ I’ve literally just been hooked onto their songs and history +looking at each individual past members history… AWESOMENESS!!
My dad also loved Queen and Thin Lizzy. He introduced me to good music. I remember my dad pinching my Stiff Little Fingers and The Stranglers vinyl records out of my bedroom and putting them with his LPs. My mam would pinch them back off my dad and put them back with my reocords until the next time my dad decided to 'borrow' my records ❤😂 Great memories. I just lost my dad on December 14th 2023 but I'll always have these great bands to remember him by. RIP dad and Phil Linnet and Bon Scott another great talented musician, artist and singer sadly lost too soon.
This is a really cool video, with Brian Downey "Playing" guitar in some scenes, whit Phil and Gary full of life and passion, this is Gold, Cheers from a big fan in Mexico!
What a great fun video! Gary nicking beats from Scott and Brian; Phil dragging out Brian in front of the class (Brian's laughing his bollocks off); Scott wearing shades and looking cool on the phone; Brian playing guitar! Scott planting a head butt on Phil, haha; Phil the most bad ass convict ever! All to a killer track!
Phil and the boys from Thin Lizzy lead my brothers and me astray, over the hills and far away, they keep us out late in the summer and cold winter nights, they made us travel all over the lands in a beat-up old Ford van, traveling to gigs and to watch the very greatest rocking band that ever stood on stage and rip the place apart with their brilliant music, When we did not have enough money to get every one of in to those gigs, wee would tell lies and say were were delivering very special guitar strings to the band, it all ways works and now I ask God for forgiveness from the sins I told but I refuse to take any apologise from the Lizzy boys for leading us astray, we enjoyed every single moment and we would not have wanted it any other way, Thanks a Billion Phil and all the Lizzy boys, you did a great job
It is from the album Black Rose: A Rock Legend, released in 1979. The album is not called Do anything you wanna do, that is the title of the song. And man, what a great song it is
Had a wonderful Alan Partridge moment listening to Radio Devon a few years back, DJ went 'that was Thin Lizzy with Do Anything You Want To. Do you agree with that? email in or call us on...'
The most legendary Rock band who are responsible for bringing revolution into the world of Heavy metal and Hard Rock And it's sad that they are so underrated even today they are criminally underrated inspite of being talented and iconic Rock & Roll Hall of Fame have not inducted them yet it's a total shame to the world dog rock & roll
Nice to see a video for this very catchy track, I had never seen Thin Lizzy clips in the late 70's/early 80's, I think. But this can't date back to 1977... the album Black Rose was released in 1979.... Black Rose is probably my favourite Lizzy album, after Renegade (yes, the one that didn't fare too well).
Do Anything You Want To Thin Lizzy There are people that will investigate you They'll insinuate, intimidate and complicate you Don't ever wait or hesitate to state the fate that awaits those who Try to shake or take you Don't let them break you You can do anything you want to do It's not wrong what I sing it's true You can do anything you want to do Do what you want to People that despise you will analyze then criticize you They'll scandalize and tell lies until they realize You are someone they should have apologized to Don't let these people compromise you Be wise too You can do anything you want to do It's not wrong what I sing it's true You can do anything you want to do Do what you want to Hey you you're not their puppet on a string You can do everything…
This is the song for freedom of spirit, speech and life. The one and only Phil Lynott. He will never be forgotten. Never!!!

I love this video. Phil’s lyrics are just phenomenal. I wish he was still with us.

These lyrics should be the anthem of todays youth.
Freedom of speech and expression. Don't lose it!
Philip's Anarchist statement.
The entire Black Rose album is so fucking good. It has fighting spirit, virtuose licks, and brilliant melodies all the way thru. For me its in top 3 along with Fighting and Bad Reputation. What a band!
I totally agree Sir !!!!!!

It's a shame we lost Phil, A fantastic musician and singer. Thin Lizzy were a great band.
Rip dad my late dad's favourite band, rocking in heaven now.
May he rest in peace 🙏
Rip your late father, He had some taste in music then 😉
What a brilliant larger than life figure Phil Lynott was.
This is where Phil's love of classic Irish verse comes into play, not many '70s hard rock bands come up with a set of lyrics like those!
For me Phil was always a poet.
Phil Lynnott and Bon Scott are The street poets of the 70s and really there's been nobody to take over since their early sad passing in the 80s.
Those rhymes are forced, it's silly. Not that it matters for this great song, it's meant to be.

This is such an uplifting and motivating song, I like to hear ir whenever I'm feeling sad❤️
Scott and Gary together, the best twin lead guitar couple. We will never forget Thin Lizzy and Phil. Greetings from Southern Italy!!!🇮🇹

Everyone praises the other guitarists of TL, but Scott is too overlooked and underrated!

Do Anything You Want To
Thin Lizzy
There are people that will investigate you
They'll insinuate, intimidate and complicate you
Don't ever wait or hesitate to state the fate that awaits those who
Try to shake or take you
Don't let them break you
You can do anything you want to do
It's not wrong what I sing it's true
You can do anything you want to do
Do what you want to
People that despise you will analyze then criticize you
They'll scandalize and tell lies until they realize
You are someone they should have apologized to
Don't let these people compromise you
Be wise too
You can do anything you want to do
It's not wrong what I sing it's true
You can do anything you want to do
Do what you want to
Hey you you're not their puppet on a string
You can do everything…
