It was a performance that made us want to play Beethoven like the Germans. Mr. Christoph Eschenbach first came to Japan as a pianist over 50 years ago and also conducted, and we have always been reminded of this. The bowing of the strings was well synchronized, and each section of the orchestra resonated well, from the high notes to the low notes, giving a good performance in a traditional German style.
Very strange comment. Other orchestras are not synchronized? I think it is a great performance like other great performances also from other countries you can listen to. Listen to Bernstein performance at New York, or Barenboim as well.
Einfach wunderbar!
In lock-down I am so distressed by not being able to go to the Concert hall to hear my beloved music... very distressing. But I have my dear friends in this wonderful orchestra to thank for their wonderful concerts - I want to express my profound thanks to them, to the conductor, and moreover to the sound engineers... the sound-stage of left, middle and right sounds is totally on point here.. wonderful performance, thank you. So many good wishes from the UK.
Ich habe sehr selten den ersten symphonie Beethoven's gehört aber dieses ist ausgezichnet I am not a native German speaker so forgive dem fehlern da droben
I. Adagio molto. Allegro con brio II. Andante cantabile con moto 10:27 III. Menuetto Allegro molto Vivace 19:27 IV. Finale. Adagio. Allegro molto Vivace 23:01
It is really awesom !! This symphony lead me to fall in love with composition classical music and L.V.Beethoven. You know, I was fall in love this 4th movement when i listen this music via radio and i was looking for this music for 4years when i was teenager!
The first time I heard this it was simulcast on tv 📺 and radio with Leonard Bernstein and the Vienna philharmonic, I thoroughly enjoyed maestro Bernstein explaining the facts surrounding this symphony and I hit record on the cassette player to record the performance that I listened to over and over again..and my parents had a vinyl disc with Beethovens violin concerto.. 🎻 this performance is fresh and full of vim and vigor...love it!..
Absolutely wonderful. The first movement was slower than usual but Eschenbach is a great conductor and knows how to build a symphony. Perfect size orchestra, not ridiculously small which takes the necessary weight out of the work. This is after all Beethoven not a Baroque period composition.
In my advancing age (I hate using that word!) I'm gradually becoming more acquainted with more Beethoven symphonies than "just" the 3rd, 5th through 7th and the 9th. This 1st is growing to more of a delight the more I tune in to it on this medium. Most opinions expressed here are quite positive; I join them here. Thank you, HR, for uploading this very fine performance!, and while it's a shame that pandemic conditions dictated that no audience could be present, the music itself and the effort that went into making it is its own reward for us listeners after-the-fact. JAT
As with his piano concertos I actually prefer his 1st and 2nd to the more usually played. Ok a really good performance of the 5th symphony can be an exciting event even though it suffers from over exposure.
I do recommend reading Donald Tovey's analysis of this symphony (as of all the symphonies) where he describes the excellence of the 1st Symphony and how it baffled many critics at the time. It is both in debt to Mozart - eg the prominence of the wind instruments- but also something wholly new and radical.
I found this performance invigorating and enlightening, could see and hear for the first time the extraordinary amount of give and take and interplay between all the various sections of the orchestra, the passing around of the themes and motives all with split second timing, wonderful, great performance of great piece.
Very beautiful, clear sounds. I would have liked more suspense in the intro of the finale. The duo could have been a bit more believable, but instead it felt like we were brushing past it, "You guys have heard this before. You already know the punch line." Also I found some of the climactic parts were too dynamic in my opinion and had too much definition, rather than a fuller, more consistently loud thing. It felt like instead of getting a mountain range, someone filed down the valleys and we got individual mountains one after the other, so a bit anticlimactic. But I'm not a musician and know very little, except what I know instinctually and with conviction about at least what I would prefer to hear myself.
@@urbangrouse Thank-you How is great Canada ? The season of blooming cherry blossoms has come again in Japan . Beethoven was fully musically mature at this point, this is not a training symphony. Had he stopped composing after the First, he would be considered a great Composer.
Nowadays I'm also used to let's say Gardiner or Järvi. But this is played in a very good old fashioned way. Less light-heartedly maybe, but more details and maybe a bit more beautiful, too. Pretty enjoyable. And the Adagio molto is literally... Adagio molto. 😀

I love this orchestra, excellent rich clear sound
I've never heard the 1st movement played like that before. What a nice change from the usual pace.

Such a delicate and lively symphony - it always stays fresh.

Sehr schön. Ich liebe es!
Thank you
Very nice slow tempo.
I lived in Madrid for a while - a wonderful city. Glad to hear your love of Beethoven, he really is the greatest musical genius.
Thanks again dear friends. Kind regards from Comox Valley.

Beethoven's use of Woodwinds impresses me more and more as time goes on.
And to think this was his first symphony
Well that was awesome. 👏
Thanks to Covid, we don't have any disturbing or distracting audience noises.

Good sound, but too slow and pedestrian. Beethoven 1 should be played brisk and light-heartedly.
Opinion only. Classical music is always open to interpretation by the performer.

Oh why oh why no French style bass bows in your orchestra?
I do better in English. He had not yet achieved his Sturm und Drang macht.
This is a top notch classical symphony. His third symphony is considered to be the first work of the romantic era.
