I'm glad you decided to do this video, Simon! Always fun to watch you with your mum. A few new-to-me books in your selections. No worries about jinxing these authors -- 'twould be an honor for them to be mentioned by you, I think.
I love Ann Patchett, but alas must agree with your patron who said Tom Lake isn't one of Patchett's better books.
And agree with your mum -- books about grief are right up my alley, too.

Ooh, lots of goodies here. 😍There are some very strong contenders this year that I'd be thrilled to see longlisted so I'll have excuse to buy and read them.
Simon, I couldn't agree more with you about reading novels written by poets. I think Safiya Sinclair's background in poetry is why I'm enjoying her non-fiction longlisted memoir How to Say Babylon so much.
I'll be really surprised if Clear gets nominated when West by Carys Davies did not. I feel like West is her strongest book (much loved by me), though I know many readers have found Clear deeply moving.

Ooh what an interesting list. I’ve not heard of The Weeds will look that up. Nice to see we had some similarities. You may need to swap Chain Gang All Stars as the authors is very much a man. Haha.
Update. The Weeds sounds great. It’s sadly not got a UK publisher but if it does will be eligible for next year.

Wow - Perfect writing - that is a wonderful thing to say and for an author to hear. Weird how just one small piece can take your breath away. what a lot of great books and even some sex for Louise!!

No sex for Louise please, of any kind. She just won’t take to it. Hahaha. I may have to do a ‘how sexy is this book out of ten’ when I review each of the longlisted books as a bonk barometer for mum 🤣🤣🤣🤣
