Yay, love this annual staple of Women's Prize season. Anna and I have 7 predictions in common, and it wasn't just the obvious ones! 🥳 Solder Sailor is both a book-long panic attack *and* funny. Just an excellent exercise in voice. A must-read and really deserves to be on the longlist. It would be a very worthy winner.
Thanks, Ben! Glad you're of a similar mindset and it bodes well for those books. You've made me very eager to get to Soldier Sailor. I've been waiting to watch your predictions so I wouldn't be swayed but now that we've made ours I'll go to that now. 🙂
Yaaaay you made my day! I've been waiting for it! ❤ I'm 36 weeks pregnant today, and I've been in bed for some time now because there is a risk of baby being born too soon so seeing this video in the app now truly made me happy this afternoon! ❤ Okay, I'll go and watch it now! 😊
I feel like the women’s prize has officially begun now that the Eric-Anna predictions are here! Loved hearing both of your thoughts and a few books here that I hadn’t heard of! 🧡
Shadows at Noon is a door stopper and it wasn’t something I thought I would get into… but I am loving it right now and I’m about 700 pages in. I’m fully absorbed!
This was so fun to watch. Many of these are on my TBR pile & I’ve added more. …I recently finished Mrs S by K Patrick and was absolutely enthralled by this book-I’ve never felt so immersed into a character’s head. A five star read! I was hoping it would’ve been mentioned, but I’m also new to following this prize & unsure if the author identifies as a woman, so maybe it’s not eligible? If it is eligible, I’ll be rooting for it. Hoping to read more of these titles, and looking forward to see what makes it to the long list. Thank you both for a great video. ♥️ 📚
Ah! I’ve been waiting for this! So many thoughts. I would love Clear to be on the list but I don’t know if it’s long enough. Headshot is getting a lot of buzz but I’m with Anna that it’s not really my kind of thing. I will be shocked if The Wren, The Wren isn’t there. Loot has been out here for a while and I did not love it, I confess. Vaster Wilds was terrific. Would love to see it on the list. Very excited for Dominoes. I also agree that Julia has a good shot. I loved Tom Lake but I don’t expect to see it on the list (although I would be delighted to be wrong). Hooray for The Fraud! I did not love Let Us Descend but Ward is so talented. Would love to see Charlotte Wood on the list as well. I wonder whether Land of Milk and Honey is more of a Booker-book? And Yellowface may well be there but I was quite let down by it. I would add one wild card, which is Alice McDermott’s Atonement, a stunning book that has flown under the radar. Thanks so much for this video! Can’t wait for the 5th.
Thanks so much for your thoughts! 📚 I'd love for Atonement to be included as I'd really like to read it. Fingers crossed for some of our top choices. Not long to wait now till the official longlist is out.
I have actually read four from your lists, Tom Lake, The Fraud, Let us Descend, and Vaster Wilds! I am so looking forward to see the list! Loved your video!
Brilliant!! So lovely to see your predictions. There are several authors whose books I've previously enjoyed on your lists. Carys Davies - love her writing, would read the new book whatever!! I'd forgotten some of these were eligible too, like Tom Lake. Eric I think we're on the plod along live together so look forward to chatting more then!
I look forward to this every year and enjoyed it so much as always!!! I was so interested to hear your thoughts, and it's made me esp keen to read Stone Yard Devotional. For the first year ever I've been on top of it enough over the year to make a stab at some predictions. I'd expect to see The Fraud, Tom Lake (which I LOVED), Julia, The Wren the Wren. I think there may be some more commercial picks - I did like Yellowface even though it was extremely on the nose (got so sucked in!), Good Material by Dolly Alderton is her best yet and has received positive reviews, perhaps Green Dot or Sunburn or Piglet may also make the list? My other guesses include Emma Cline's The Guest, Lady Tan's Circle of Guests, The Rachel Incident (loved), Study for Obedience, Penance, Ordinary Human Failings (not for me but seem popular), A House for Alice, Bellies, Come and Get It, I am Homeless if this is not my home, Hangman, Greta and Valdin, Interesting facts about Space (haven't read yet). This is already too many! tom lake to win x
I'm with you on Julia. Hoping to see that book get nominated so I'll have an excuse to read it (it's almost universally mentioned in every predictions video). Still haven't read Yellowface, but it strikes me as too commercial for the Women's Prize. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
Glad to see that you have Clear on this list. I am hopeful that this appears on many lists this year as it is excellent. DNF Anne Enright, Catherine Lacey, Lauren Groff book, but fully expect them to be there. Have copies of Sandra Newman, C Pam Zhang and Zadie Smith's book - just not got round to reading them. I would assume they too would be there ❤
Loved watching this as usual! You've introduced me to a few I hadn't heard of. I would love for The Middle Daughter by China Unigwe to make it on the longlist.
Have read several of these (Vaster Wilds..a big YES for me) and thanks for a few more added to my TBR! I do hope The Women by Kristin Hannah makes the list. She deserves it for this book. Also Lorrie Moore's Homeless if This is Not my Home!
Yes to The Vaster Wilds. Yay! I love that book so much (it even prompted me to go back and explore all of Groff's work. Matrix is now the only book of hers that I haven't picked up). I struggled with Moore's new book but wouldn't be surprised to see it get nominated (in which I case I would willingly revisit it).
Thanks to you both for this lovely video! I'm not sure why, but I've found it really hard to get interested in new releases recently. But thanks to you, The Wren, the Wren, The List of Suspicious Things and Loot went straight into my TBR list!
I love this annual tradition video with Ms. Anna. I always look forward to this one and in the end, I invariably end up ordering more books. Best time of the year, honestly.😊
Yes! I find so many new books to be excited about from the predictions videos. Part of me hopes the books I'm keen on will get nominated so I'll have an excuse to buy them, but the other part of me wants the longlist to be 16 unmentioned books so I'll have even more new titles to explore. Hah!
Such a great time of the year! Love to see everyone's predictions and making my own! Also SO pleased to see Biography of X on your list, Eric! It's on my list too and I wondered if I'd gone a bit too off the track haha
As always, this was a delight! I'd love to see The Vaster Wilds and Orbital nominated, as those were among my favorite reads of 2023. I'd be shocked if Davies' Clear gets nominated when West did not (I feel West is a far more arresting read). I've seen so many enticing books mentioned in prediction videos in the last week that I wouldn't dare list all the ones I hope will get nominated so I'll have an excuse to buy and read them, but I will say that The Extinctions of Irena Rey has been on my TBR since October of 2023. I'll most likely buy that book even if it doesn't get nominated.
Thrilled you both chose Charlotte Wood's 'Stone Yard Devotional'. Wood is an extraordinary author. Her previous novels like 'The Weekend' and 'The Natural Way of Things' are brilliant! Also hoping Enright's 'The Wren The Wren' and Sandra Newman's 'Julia' make the cut. Fingers crossed!
Loved the lucky dip non-fiction longlist idea! I’m also hoping to read Thunderclap soon and I’ve just started Wifedom and I’m already fascinated. I nearly selected The List of Suspicious Things on my predictions as I got a proof copy of it in my goody bag from the Women’s Prize Live last year! I hope it gets listed so that I can read it asap. 😊 You both have excellent lists. 📚
Western Lane was a really good audiobook, because I wasn't sure if I wanted to read it from the page. Linda Grant's book was great too. Stoneyard Devotional, another I've read, it is nuanced and quite gritty. It's set in the region where I live. Not really sure if it's Women's Prize material. I do love her work though. Kate Grenville is another Aus writer who's novel might be eligible this year. I'm keen to read a number of these. Great lists guys.
Thank you for mentioning the audiobook for Western Lane. It doesn't sound like a book I'd gravitate to, but if the audiobook is good, I'd give it a chance.
Hooray I've been waiting for this. I have read quite a number of your picks. I did not get on with The Vaster Wilds and thought Let Us Descend was okay. Pleased to see an Aussie novel on your list. Erik you must read some Charlotte Wood, each of her books is quite different. I think you would enjoy The Weekend. I would like to see Soldier Sailor by Claire Kilroy and Ordinary Human Failings by Meagan Nolan on the list.
I'm really pleased to hear your Lublin love. I got a subscription to the publisher for my birthday which they use to print the books and this was the second one I received. It's sitting on my TBR pile but I will move it up now. Great video, thanks!
IIRC the last time I watched this feature you two touched on Demon Copperhead, and David Copperfield and whether or not it makes sense to read them in conjunction, which I did for the most part. I seem to recall there were others wrestling with the choice. For me, I think that reading Copperhead immediately after Copperfield was a mistake because it was too easy to anticipate the plot. I'm wondering if there is any input on this topic? Otherwise, I enjoyed the show but I feel deprived now it's hard for me to be up-to-date on current fiction, but believe it or not I do try. : )
