The logistics around British woodworking is no joke. Most of the projects I’ve done have involved me kneeling on the floor of my kitchen, lounge and driveway. My back hurts just thinking about the bedside cabinets I still need to build. Good on you Jason for taking the time to see a patron in the UK 🇬🇧
I remember building my workbench on the ground outdoors, in high British winds, spending the whole time thinking: "It would really help the build go more smoothly, if I had a freakin' workbench!"
Brilliant. This is real woodworking. More people have workshops like this than huge “shops” full of monster equipment and every Festool going. But the outcome was the same. Bravo!
I remember my dad saying this was his problem with the show “This Old House”. The host, Norman, started with tools that any person might have, but by the end, he was only using multi-thousand dollar tools that most people wouldn’t have.
People like Jason uses a number of Festool products, but he doesn't flaunt them. I'm always on the hunt for new RUclipsrs to subscribe to, and in some videos I watch, in the first minute, all you see is a wall of 30+ Festool boxes. I just turn them off and look elsewhere.

Sam won the contest....and our hearts. What a trooper for being able to tell Jason 'no you come to my shop'. The result is perhaps my favorite Bourbon Moth episode ever. 😁
Getting the full British DIY experience. Most tools in the shed, check. Not enough room so gazebo set up, check. Rain rain and more rain, check. Putting it together in the kitchen while everything sits in the living room, check. Cat (sorry British dog) in the way at all times, yup. Grandad showing up to show how it's supposed to be done, double check. 🤣
So glad I found this episode. Firstly, huge respect for honouring the contest to the fullest extent and doing this project with such meagre resources. Secondly, in all fairness to Sam, by our standards in the UK, that's a pretty well appointed shed. He should be very proud. Thirdly, so cool how Sam took you into his home/family life, and how you integrated. Says a lot about you both and made for a really special video. If I wasn't already subscribed, I definitely would be after watching this. Absolutely fantastic.
This is so English - the parents and grandparents hanging out on your sofa, watching you and offering bits of advice - some useful, some very much not so.
Isn't it. I feel Americans in general would handle this well though. People watching me and commenting makes me feel inadequate, especially a "knowing better" granddad but my Floridian cousin doesn't even flinch 😂
This is spectacular. And a perfect 1st for your collaboration contest. Not everyone has a 1000+ Sq ft shop. Sam's little shed is probably more akin to most shops than he may think and you guys showed that Sq footage isn't as important as the desire to do.
Totally outstanding video. As someone (also in England) whose first ‘shop’ was a disused 8x6 plastic greenhouse, I am truly impressed by Sam’s shed. I also have to take my table saw outside to use it but I have two blades! No domino joiner though… More of this kind of thing please! Sam, when are you starting ‘Sam’s Shed’ as a channel?
Not everyone in America has a shop. My shop is basically a much smaller pop-up tent on my drive way. I even have to use the chop saw outside. But Sam is killing me with one blade swapping back and forth. The table saw and sliding saw should each have their own blade because they should have different hook angles for optimum performance. Also there's lots of time wasted keep switching back and forth.
I live in an apartment and have a ground floor patio that doubles as a shop. It too has an 'outdoor table saw', as well as an outdoor router, drill press, chop saw, and sander. Instead of a shed, I have a very manly-appearing dining room with a bunch of tools in the corner!
This video is a balm for our troubled souls at a time when so many conflicts test us. Jason and Sam gave us a nicely focused education in woodworking while demonstrating hospitality, charity, humility, and humor. What a wonderful world is woodworking!
I think this is my favorite of your videos thus far. Sam has definitely made the most of his tiny shed-shop and it makes me appreciate my space a bit more - although not much larger, I can use my table saw inside. Great work all around - and I love the bed! 😊
I just loved this video. I moved to the UK about 5 years ago from Canada. If you want lumber over here, you have to track it down and buy it from someone who mills it. My wife and I renovated an old house remotely. I sent the architect drawings for my shop. The builder decided that no one needed a shop that big and shrunk it by 1 meter. I ended up with a glorified hallway. Most of the local trades people work out of the back of their van so what would they know? I have tried to squeeze in my proper table saw, drill press, jointer, planer, chop saw and dust extractor. The builders asked what my 10 inch General saw was. They had never seen something like it before. It is like the shell game. The best solution I could come up with is to put all of the big tools on castors and move things around like a valet parking lot. I work outside as much as I can but the weather here can be quite bad. A 3/4 inch sheet of ply that I had on sawhorses in the back yard got blow up in the air by a gust of wind, broke a wall mounted light fixture and they landed about 20 feet from where it started from. Luckily I was in the house on a lunch break. It was really nice to see you come and adapt to local conditions. You have a lot of patience. If you are ever at Disneyland in California, it is like 'Small World After All'. That is what it is like here. I have two acres and it is mind boggling to most people here. Kids ask 'Why is your garden so big?'. Sorry about our food.
Smart man that Sam. Engineering quite the shop out of a shed and a tent, multi-purposing his living space, and hot swapping blades and putting the money into the domino joiner was genius. This was an incredible video. That bed is beautiful and will last a lifetime. I enjoyed this so much
I'm British and live in Canada, clearly, something from our common wealth rubbed off once upon a time cause as soon as Winter starts "warming up" and we get to about 7 degrees the Canadians are out in their shorts and sandals lol
I'm from the UK and lucky enough to have a workshop about 70ft long and 20ft wide. It doesn't have a roof and the floor is made of grass, but one mustn't grumble
I for one admire the English and their small back yard wood working sheds. They have figured out over many centuries how to accomplish so much in such a small space. It's as the Britts would say 'just brilliant'.
Positively BRILLIANT mate! Highly entertaining and Sam is hilarious, fitting in perfectly with your uhm ... twisted sense of humor. And to top it all off, that bed looked fantastic - no one would ever guess it was built in what amounts to a closet with a single small blade. lol Easily one of your best videos!
You poor bugger, I live in Lewes and bonfire weekend was horrible weather this year… I guess it’s a bit late to say that I have a proper shop too…. Good to see you about in town.
I love Sam's house and how to have to cross the street to get to the garden. his shop is also very well organized and I would love to see him again in the future!
Great episode, being English (and now living in Canada) I am somewhat biased but it brought back memories. And yes, the closest thing to a truck is the indestructible Toyota hi ace so everyone makes do with a car. Awesome job on the bed

Oh man, this is your best video by far. I laughed so much with your comment about "never swept the floor".....brilliant, they had it coming. I hope you enjoyed England, Sam seemed like a great host and the bed looked awesome. We'll done guys really enjoyed the work.
Welcome to England. One of the things that I’m always amazed by, as a UK woodworker, is how massive US workshops are. I’m lucky enough to have a shop that is 26.2 x 10.8 feet. I still moan about that, but I’m very grateful for it. The first thought that went through my head when Jason said he was coming to the UK was “This should be interesting” knowing that he was bound to be working in a restricted space. I must admit, I wasn’t prepared for how restricted. Good job at making such a small space work though.
This video was AMAZING. What a special experience!! Loved Sam, loved the shed, laughed my face off the whole way through (esp w/ the shared chop and table saw blade) and of course loved the bed!!! Well done, laddies.
I think this is the craziest wood working project I have seen here so far but I love it! Great idea, great story, great everything! Respect for your decision to take the challenge!
Absolutely loved this. Welcome to woodworking inside you're house in the UK. Nice shed Sam mate done us proud, treat yourself to some ice-cream. Good work Jason proper good sport. Great vid.
What a great build, I’ve only just started watching your videos (which are great by the way) and then you come to England to a village about 5minutes from me
A beautiful end result, a fantastic, humorous video, and wonderfully relatable to the many, many people without huge workshops. It looks like Sam and his girlfriend did a great job as hosts too, but he definitely needs to splash out on a second blade! Never underestimate what can be achieved in a blokes shed at the end of the garden.
I think this is a perfect example of why I like your videos. Its not just wood working or furniture building, they are entertaining and funny. Always appreciated and enjoyed.
Hands down my favourite video of yours! So many relatable things in this video with Sam, and he has such a great video persona. Would love to see him make a channel :)
I’ll never complain about my single garage shop again! Just proves what can be done with a single saw blade and a gazebo. I think we forget that contractors often work under similar conditions for a living.
loved absolutely loved it. coming from a background working in woodworking shops and coming to england i can see myself doing what Sam does Storing the wood in the "living room" well done guys
This was an awesome video to watch. I've seen a lot of woodworking with "normal" tools. First time I've watched a video with a woodworker going to a "normal" shop.
This was brilliant to watch. After seeing so many (mainly USA based) videos with folk making stuff in huge warehouses (to us...) this is quite refreshing! I am lucky to have a double garage as my workshop but I still built my mitre saw bench to align with the window to cut longer boards! 1) Open window, 2) Put a saw horse or stand outside, 3) cut the wood! Well done Sam - great project.
Watched you for a couple of years...leaping and crashing around in your shop! Love what you do but this was on another level, bloody brilliant in fact! I am british and can one hundred per cent relate to the shed life; tinkering and getting away from the missus. Well done mate.
This has to be one of my favourite videos that you've done 🤣🤣🤣 I can totally relate to Sam. My workshop is 100% outdoors. I have space in the garage for all my tools but to do anything it all has to come outside. It's a headache but I'm used to it. Keep up the good work. Can't wait to see the next comp winner.
I smiled SO HARD watching this, it's SO similar to my situation. In my case my tool storage is in my living room, my shed is full of bikes and garden tools, so can just about fit lumber storage, and to work on anything I have to erect a pop up workbench, and I have a pop up tent handy if the weather gets rough! (Upgrated from a tarp propped up with 2x4s)
Fun video. Watching you sip tea reminded me that green tea is supposed to improve your memory. It works, because whenever I drink it, I remember it tastes like crap !!
hehehe, now you know the despair I feel when i look at your workshop, which that is bigger than my house, let alone your extension or even the house! :D Cracking video though, shows that even with limited space and less tools what is possible. Love that the whole family turned out :D
Brilliant! I really enjoyed this diversion from your usual content Jason - the humour was still there and you found lots of opportunities to express it whilst getting the job done. Thanks also to Sam, of course . . . and his girlfriend's breakfasts alone look like they were worth the trip you made. An excellent video, more for its entertainment than for any woodworking info, but the half hour of watching flew past and had me laughing out loud a few times. Thanks again to everyone involved . . . the only thing missing was a group photo in the shop . . . but I don't suppose you could all fit in there at the same time anyway.
This is so cool the fact you have taken so much time out of your week to go and help someone in another country is so awesome. Iv been a subscriber for a couple of years now and I'm so glad I did your videos are just the best.
As a UK (England) viewer and long time subscriber to your channel just simply brilliant. Loved the commentary as usual. Sam's shop is huge in comparison I have a fold down worktop in a corridor that might be fun to build a bed in especially as it is only a 4 ft wide corridor.
It's nice to have experienced help on a big project in a small space, it's easy to get bogged down in the logistics, start cutting corners and lose sight of quality control.
What a great video! My Dad was a carpenter, his workshop was "the shed" which was actually the old toilet at the back of the house. He made some incredible stuff, I saw furniture, window frames, all sorts come out of there. Love the fact that you embraced the challenge!
Inspiring to see you work in a shop about the same size as mine and still come out with something awesome! On behalf of Brits everywhere, may I say how refreshing it was to hear how Jason's accent has improved after his experience over here!
Hey Jason, you will REALLY appreciate your shop when you get back! Lots of us in the uk can only work in sheds or single garages… but we do have great roast dinners 😁😁
HA HA HA HA!!! This was glorious! Love the work you did. The shed was actually pretty nice. Very compact but you both did a great job of working together to build the bed.
Oh mate, that was soooo funny, absolutely loved it. I have the same little job site table saw as Sam in my small workshop/ shed. I feel like it wants to kill me every time i switch it on lol. And I'm a 30year time served kitchen fitter from a sleepy little fishing village called Wolverhampton 😆

Great vid.
The British dog was truly the star of the show!
What a great build, I’ve only just started watching your videos (which are great by the way) and then you come to England to a village about 5minutes from me
What an awesome contest and thanks to you in helping Sam fulfill what I'm sure was a dream project.
What a nice environment Sam is living in. Love the landscape and his woodshop. He may be proud if it. Nice.
I think this is a perfect example of why I like your videos. Its not just wood working or furniture building, they are entertaining and funny. Always appreciated and enjoyed.
Imagine how efficient everyone would be if we had the same tenacity as he does to use such a small area
Pretty good accent at the end!
it's amazing that you would do this for someone especially in a different country. As always, love your videos 👍
By far the best video you have uploaded so far. Very humbling and real life. More please.
Hands down my favourite video of yours! So many relatable things in this video with Sam, and he has such a great video persona. Would love to see him make a channel :)
That was awesome! This has to be my favorite woodworking channel on RUclips! I really enjoy the entertainment. Thanks for another good watch
Quite possibly your funniest and most entertaining video ever. I full on belly laughed at the blade swapping between tools. Thanks!
This was an awesome video to watch. I've seen a lot of woodworking with "normal" tools. First time I've watched a video with a woodworker going to a "normal" shop.
This is such a good video. I live in England and I know the struggles of having no space and bad weather 🙃
I'm only a quarter way thru video and love it already. Sam is damned funny, great shed and classic scenario to pick a winner in another country.
Watched you for a couple of years...leaping and crashing around in your shop! Love what you do but this was on another level, bloody brilliant in fact! I am british and can one hundred per cent relate to the shed life; tinkering and getting away from the missus. Well done mate.
Great video, it’s fun to see how other woodworkers deal with their tool or space limitations. The bed turned out amazing
Sam used his knowledge and imagination for that shop. But yeah, we have a lot of tea in our home but it doesn't compare to coffee...
This has to be one of my favourite videos that you've done 🤣🤣🤣
I can totally relate to Sam. My workshop is 100% outdoors. I have space in the garage for all my tools but to do anything it all has to come outside. It's a headache but I'm used to it.
Keep up the good work. Can't wait to see the next comp winner.
Amazing how even a tiny shop can produce such a wonderful king-size bed. Well done.
Cracking video though, shows that even with limited space and less tools what is possible. Love that the whole family turned out :D
Yes he would even dream of the despair. 😂😂😂 girl from London here!!
Welcome to England. I have the same shed but all my work is done outside. I am a weather permitting wood worker 🏴🇬🇧
That was awesome and really shows that anything is possible with a little American and British ingenuity.
Fishing village? Wolverhampton couldn’t be further from the sea! 😂
I actually fitted a soft start to the table saw because I got so frightened of the super aggressive startup every time!
