One curiosity tho... technically counter didn't exist in fire emblem during the time melee came. The counter move in smash was inspired by how combat works in FE, with your character attacking then, if the enemy has more speed than your character, the enemy with attack you before you follow up. This means counter appeared first in smash and then in fire emblem.
I think counter in smash was meant to emulate the gameplay of Fire Emblem, since you fight most enemies in enemy phase. So it's like if the enemy attacks you, misses his attack, and then you attack back.

That's not how combat works in fe. In fe, no matter what, an enemy will attack you after you attack an enemy and vice versa. Where speed (or more specifically in most games attack speed) comes into play is that if you have higher speed than your opponent to a certain degree (at least 1 more in some games, 3 more in some, 4 morein some, and 5 more in some) you will attack twice in the same combat.
I'll be honest counter genuinely doesn't work as a reference to that since the character countering doesn't take any damage before following up. Also it doesn't work as a reference to the actual skill counter either since you have to take damage for counter to activate in fire emblem. The best I could guess as to the smash counter's equivalent in fe would be having an enemy attack your unit, then your unit dodges their attack, then hits their follow up attack.
@@ninjabunny9526 Yeah that makes sense. Counter is smash has not a true counterpart in the fe games. The only one I can think of, and I am basically stretching this one a bit, is vantage, because the enemy initiates combat but before the enemy's first attack, you attack first
The most unintentional thing about Marth and Roy's counters in Melee is that they sometimes can perform the invisible ceiling glitch when their counters land
Pretty funny that counter, a reaction/prediction based attack, comes from the franchise where characters routinely take the most telegraphed attacks ever to the face.
Just give everyone a counter at this point. Have it be whenever you press ZR.
Attacking out of shield/spotdodge is essentially a universal counter
you know what, you could totally make a platform fighter where counter is a universal mechanic. that sounds interesting.

Smash 4 just gave anyone counters
The best version of Peach's Toad counter is in Smash 4 with the Sleepy Toad custom variation. That version at the very least gave the threat of a strong punish if it connected and, in a way, is a predecessor to Witch Time just not nearly as strong.
The problem with that one is it only works on grounded opponents, and has even worse frame data.
I honestly wish that Melee Roy wasn't so shit, it would be cool to have a duo of swordie clones who play similarly yet differently, similar to Fox + Falco

At port priority 8, Umeki caught Skyjay’s recovery with Daisy’s neutral b counter. Since Skyjay plays Incineroar, and he didn’t have a jump, it won Umeki the game, and the set.

Honestly, even at their best, counters were a pretty niche tool.
i think the smash 4 section was a bit exaggerated with bayo countering final smashes because from what i recall, marth could do so it as well but bayo being DLC and top tier kinda made it hard to notice

I wanna see how duck hunt changed in HDR, because I see a lot of tier lists saying that duck hunt is the best character in HDR, while in the actual game he's ranked as at the bottom of the C- tier, and he's the 18th worst character in the game, so i wanna se how he got from being kinda bad in ultimate to being fantastic in HDR
I know a peach player that camps ledge and manages to spam the same options every time and cannot get punished because of her counter.

Funnily, Melee Roy has the most broken counter in the series since as they forgot to put a damage cap on counter, the game will crash if he counters a move that will deal a ludicrous amount of damage or knockback.
Umeki won a set against muteace using daisy counter at port priority 8
sora, joker, and Sephiroth have the most unbalanced counters in ultimate. Sintillica is so egregious, I’ve died at 40 from using moves that kill at 115. The other ones are just as crazy in different ways.
As a Joker main myself, I love making online zoner mains brains break as they just power me up. Samus mains especially just do their normal “send two projectiles to deal with at once” plan and then they stare in horror as Arsene comes out and they have a monster on their hands

Peach’s counter does 25% and kills around 100 or so
16:02 peach’s counter isn’t that hard to kill with. It’s just weaker and doesn’t work properly a lot of the time.
Counters pretty much are the lamest moves to come up with in Smash since that move has been mostly used to easily edgeguard characters

i wish counters would have the risk of taking damage but no knockback when the counter hits, instead of well being completely invincible when it activates.
closest thing to my ideal counter is joker's rebel guard but it doesn't counter.
semi related but, sora should have had reflect instead of the guard. the guard being able to reflect things on it's own makes very little sense and was a wasted opportunity.
When you grab Banjo out of WonderWing, you take 0.25% of the damage but have grab armor anyways, functioning much like rebellion gauge actually.
the rebel guard does counter, but only if it's a direct melee hit, which i think makes perfect sense

Sir, you desperately need to have a script and edit it. You repeated yourself over and over in this video, to the point that it probably could have been half the length.
You also missed the chance to talk about so many fun things with counters, like how melee roy interacts with Invisible Ceiling, or Vision being unblockable.
